Mark Morford: Five Companies to Fear, Fondly (SF Gate)
What, you were expecting Viacom? You were expecting Time Warner, AT&T, Disney, maybe even Walmart or the twitchy knuckle-draggers of the Tea Party or Fox News? You were thinking the CIA? Wall Street? How cute you are. And how very 2003.
Paul Krugman: "On Fighting the Last War (on Poverty)" (NY Times)
… society did not collapse. What collapsed instead is economic opportunity. If progress against poverty has been disappointing over the past half century, the reason is not the decline of the family but the rise of extreme inequality. We're a much richer nation than we were in 1964, but little if any of that increased wealth has trickled down to workers in the bottom half of the income distribution.

Pushed for both time and money, many of us have come to rely on processed convenience food. But, with a little effort, you can make cheaper, tastier and healthier versions of the same dishes in your own kitchen.

I haven't eaten a hot dog at all for several decades, and I don't know how anyone with any knowledge of what they contain or might contain can put one in their mouth.
Wikipedia cites Howard Zinn:
During the Spanish-American War (1898) Armour sold 500,000 pounds of beef to the US Army. An army inspector tested the meat two months later and found that 751 cases contained rotten meat. This resulted in the food poisoning of thousands of soldiers.

I love hot dogs, once in a while...
PS: My morning care kids have strange breakfast tastes. The little girl always has soup, and the boy loves Mac 'n cheese. If I have had hot dogs for supper, I save one for him the next morning, and he scoffs it down! Ditto cold pork chops, and other left-overs. My own kids wanted sugary cereals, but not these kiddies - they rock!
PPS: B2BB, loved the picture of the icy light house on Lake Michigan. I'm wondering if all that ice will do much damage to the structure come spring?? Thx for sharing.

DJ Useo answered:
Hmm. That phrase sounds familiar. I'm pretty sure it's not related to any rock act. Wait...now it comes back to me. It's ARMOUR hot dogs! I remember now all my friends in grade school would sing that jingle.
(Apparently in the pointless hope that someone would give us a hot dog right there on the spot, lol )
The jingle I liked, but the Armour hot dogs not very much. They tasted like filler to me, and left a bad after-taste in my mouth. I liked the freshly ground hot dogs the butcher/bakery just a block from my house sold.
The owner ground them himself, and was so proud of them, he'd give free samples of cold wieners to the uninitiated, a trick that always worked to inspire purchases of more.
I'd rather eat one of his cold hot dogs rather that an Armour dog heated on bun.
Still, that's a clever jingle/slogan.
Dale of Diamundy Sprungs, Norfallcali, replied:
Amour Hot Dogs! Jingles. All boys looked like this at one time! Ummmmm - pig brains. Lady stuffed with dogs! Look Ma, no wiener jokes!
And Lois: Those turds on a cruise ship---Yuck
And, Joe S responded:
No! Wait! Not that dog.
Hot dogs, Armour hot dogs, the dogs kids love to bite!
I love hot dogs, or I did at one time. I can't eat them now, no healthy and I'm allergic to wheat so normal hot dog buns are out of the question. I haven't found a gluten-free but that's worthy of a hot dog either. I was buying a no-fat all beef hot dog for awhile but I can't find them in local stores anymore. They were really good, but pricey. I was probably the only one buying them.
When we were kids we built monumental hot dogs, fully loaded. Mustard, catsup, onions, pickles, peppers, cheese, chili, sometimes even sauerkraut. I was at one of my Aunties and cousin Billy and I were in the kitchen building hot dogs and he had a monster going. He took a big bite and said, "Dammit, I forgot the hot dog." True story.

Meryl Streep, in her signature bad-ass fashion, delivered a killer speech at the National Board of Review awards gala on Tuesday, calling out Walt Disney for being sexist and anti-Semitic.
The outspoken August: Osage County actress also took some time to give props to fellow fierce female actress, Emma Thompson, describing her as a "rabid, man-eating feminist, like I am," according to Vanity Fair, which published the entire transcript of Streep's speech.
At the event in New York, Streep won the crowd over when she came out in a baseball cap that had "Prize Winner" emblazoned across it-a nod to a similar hat in Nebraska. Streep's job was to introduce her buddy Emma Thompson in the the best-actress category for her role as P.L. Travers in Saving Mr. Banks. (The film has been criticized for giving a distorted reality of what really took place between Disney and Travers.) And boy, did she deliver!
She dug her nails into Disney, citing some evidence on his sexism. Streep read a letter Disney's company sent to a young woman in 1938 that denied her a spot in their cartoonist training program, because well, she was a woman. "Some of his associates reported that Walt Disney didn't really like women," she said.
Streep added: "Disney, who brought joy, arguably, to billions of people, was perhaps, or had some…racist proclivities. He formed and supported an anti-Semitic industry lobby. And he was certainly, on the evidence of his company's policies, a gender bigot."

The original, handwritten manuscript of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and the flag that inspired the song's lyrics will be displayed together at the Smithsonian in Washington, the first time the historic pieces are believed to have been shown side by side.
The manuscript is normally on display at the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore and the flag has been at the Smithsonian since the early 1900s. They'll be displayed together from Flag Day, June 14, through July 6. The three-week display is the start of celebrations marking 200 years since the song was written on Sept. 14, 1814.
Francis Scott Key was a 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet when he wrote the song's words during the War of 1812. Key watched as the British bombarded Baltimore's Fort McHenry for more than 24 hours. When he saw the fort's flag flying on the morning after the bombardment, a signal that U.S. troops had withstood the enemy, he was inspired to write a poem originally called "Defense of Fort McHenry." The poem, set to music and later renamed, became the country's national anthem in 1931.
Key's original manuscript, written with quill and ink, has two surprises for viewers who know the song. First, Key's poem is actually four stanzas, though the first stanza is the only one that's traditionally sung. And, second, Key wrote, "Oh say can you see through the dawn's early light," but crossed out "through" and wrote "by."
Television and radio personality Wink Martindale remembers the day nearly 60 years ago when Elvis Presley's first single, "That's All Right," played for the first time on the radio.
It was July 8, 1954, and a fresh-faced Martindale was working as a disc jockey at WHBQ in Memphis. He was at the studio when legendary producer Sam Phillips brought by an acetate copy of the song Presley cut at Phillips' Sun Records.
DJ Dewey Phillips - no relation to Sam - played the song on his influential "Red, Hot and Blue" radio show, and rock n' roll history was made.
"It was almost like an out-of-body experience," Martindale told Presley fans who came to Graceland on Wednesday to celebrate the late icon's 79th birthday. "That was the beginning of Presley-mania."
At least eight researchers or policy experts have withdrawn from an Internet security conference after the sponsor reportedly used flawed encryption technology deliberately in commercial software to allow the National Security Agency to spy more easily on computer users.
RSA Security, owned by data storage giant EMC Corp., has disputed claims it intentionally introduced the flawed encryption algorithm, but otherwise has declined to discuss what a published report last month described as a $10 million government contract.
The pullouts from the highly regarded RSA Conference represent early blowback by technology researchers and policy experts who have complained that the government's surveillance efforts have, in some cases, weakened Internet security even for innocent users.
Some U.S. companies that have agreed or been compelled to turn over customer records to the government have complained that their business relationships with customers in Europe, Asia and elsewhere are increasingly becoming arduous.
The researchers and experts include Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer of Finland-based antivirus provider F-Secure, and Adam Langley and Chris Palmer, who work on security practices at Google.

Lawyers for singer Chris Brown told a judge Wednesday that he has rejected a plea deal on a charge that he hit a man outside a Washington hotel.
Prosecutors had offered a deal in which Brown would plead guilty to the misdemeanour assault charge he faces. One of Brown's lawyers, Danny Onorato, said outside of court that attorneys rejected the deal because Brown is not guilty.
Brown's lawyers said in court that they expect a trial date to be set at another hearing, scheduled for Feb. 20. Brown did not speak during the hearing, which lasted less than 10 minutes. He wore a charcoal three-piece suit and had dark hair, not the bleached blond hair he had sported when he was arrested in October along with his bodyguard, Christopher Hollosy, who also faces an assault charge.
Brown has to return to court in California Feb. 10 for an update on his progress in rehab.
Mark Geragos, the lawyer who is representing Brown in the California case, took part in the hearing in Washington. Geragos said that Brown's lawyers plan to ask that he not have to appear at the Feb. 20 hearing in Washington because he loses three days of treatment by making the trip.

Lee Baca, who's presided as Los Angeles County Sheriff during the new Golden Age of Celebrity Misconduct, announced Tuesday that he will retire at the end of the month.
Baca, who has been Los Angeles County Sheriff since 1998, made the announcement during a press conference. His current term was due to expire in December 2014.
Baca cited the "negative perception" of his upcoming sheriff's campaign as the main reason for his retirement.
The Sheriff's Department has recently been rocked by allegations of inmate abuse, with a number of deputies being charged with crimes and accusations that an attempt to obstruct an FBI investigation into the department.
Baca's tenure has seen the arrests of numerous celebrities gone wild, often to some controversy to the department. Following the 2006 drunk-driving arrest of Mel Gibson, the department stated that he had been arrested without incident, though the arrest report revealed that the "Braveheart" star had made several inflammatory statements. The following year, celebutante Paris Hilton received a 45-day jail sentence - and was released by the department after serving only 79 hours.

The Insane Clown Posse sued the U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday over a 2011 FBI report that describes the rap-metal duo's devoted fans, the Juggalos, as a dangerous gang, saying the designation has tarnished reputations and hurt business.
The American Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit in Detroit federal court on behalf of the group's two members, Joseph Bruce, or Violent J, and Joseph Utsler, or Shaggy 2 Dope. It also names four fans as plaintiffs.
The FBI report on criminal gangs labeled the Juggalos as a "loosely organized hybrid gang." It said those who identify as Juggalos have committed assaults and vandalism, and a "small number" of them have engaged in more serious crimes.
Juggalos have lost custody of children, lost jobs and been denied housing because they're fans, Bruce said.

The Obama administration is urging schools to abandon overly zealous discipline policies that civil rights advocates have long said lead to a school-to-prison pipeline that discriminates against minority students.
The wide-ranging series of guidelines issued Wednesday in essence tells schools that they must adhere to the principle of fairness and equity in student discipline or face strong action if they don't. The American Civil Liberties Union called the recommendations "ground-breaking."
"A routine school disciplinary infraction should land a student in the principal's office, not in a police precinct," Attorney General Eric Holder said.
Holder said the problem often stems from well intentioned "zero-tolerance" policies that too often inject the criminal justice system into the resolution of problems. Zero-tolerance policies, a tool that became popular in the 1990s, often spell out uniform and swift punishment for offenses such as truancy, smoking or carrying a weapon. Violators can lose classroom time or become saddled with a criminal record.
Police have become a more common presence in American schools since the shootings at Columbine High School in 1999.

Koray Vitrin Mankenleri also produces mannequins with headscarves, but there is a limited demand for them, Gundogdu said. There are 80 different mannequin models, priced between $200 to $500, according to the company.

The avalanche near Salt Lake City last year that carried enough rock, dirt and debris to bury New York's Central Park under 66 feet of rubble was North America's largest such disaster in modern history, according to University of Utah scientists.
The April 2013 rockslide sent 165 million tons of debris into a nearly mile-deep pit where it cracked bedrock and triggered unprecedented earthquakes, the researchers said in a newly published study.
"We don't know of any case until now where landslides have been shown to trigger earthquakes," said Jeff Moore, assistant professor of geology and geophysics.
There were no injuries or deaths as the slide temporarily shut down a copper mine, burying 14 giant haul trucks and leading to a series of layoffs and buyouts at Kennecott Utah Copper Corp.
The debris slides falling as fast as 100 mph crashed to earth with such force that they registered as magnitude-5 earthquakes and then triggered 16 smaller quakes where the bedrock cracked, Moore said.
A former Canadian defence minister is urging humanity to abandon its warmongering ways and turn its back on atomic weaponry, with the promise that advanced aliens will reward a more peaceful Earth with technological marvels and advancements in agriculture and medicine.
In a widely-shared interview with Russian Today, former defence minister Paul Hellyer said that he believed aliens were real, that they are present on Earth and that they would be more willing to help humanity if we stopped warring and polluting.
"We have a long history of UFOs and of course there has been a lot more activity in the last few decades since we invented the atomic bomb," Hellyer said.
"They are very concerned about that and that we might use it again, because the whole cosmos as a unity, and it affects not just us but other people in the cosmos, they are very much afraid that we might be stupid enough to start using atomic weapons again."
Hellyer, now 90, was a Canadian defence minister in the Lester B. Pearson government during the 1960s. He is described by Russia Today host Sophie Shevardnadze as the "first cabinet-level politician from a G8 country to publicly state there is extraterrestrial life present on Earth."
