Mark Morford: Awesomely Easy Resolutions for 2014 (SF Gate)
You want to exercise more, eat better, read more books? Wonderful. Have at it. Me, I'm going a little esoteric, a little vibrational this fine year of our imminent apocalypse. It just seems appropriate. Starting with:…
Welcome to the Console Living Room (Internet Archive)
The Internet Archive Console Living Room harkens back to the revolution of the change in the hearth of the home, when the fireplace and later television were transformed by gaming consoles into a center of videogame entertainment.
Regis Francis Xavier Philbin (born August 25, 1931) is an American media personality, actor and singer, known for hosting talk and game shows since the 1960s. Sometimes called (alternatively attributed to James Brown) "the hardest working man in show business", he holds the Guinness World Record for the most time spent in front of a television camera. His trademarks include his excited manner, his New York Bronx accent, his wit, and irreverent ad-libs. He is most widely known for Live! with Regis and Kelly (previously Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee), Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Million Dollar Password, and for hosting the first season of America's Got Talent.

Hungover Lois Of Oregon was first, and correct, with:
Regis Philbin has logged more hours in front of TV cameras
(but thankfully not ON my TV) than any other human beast in
television history. But did you know he was also in front of
a MOVIE camera too, appearing in Woody Allen's
"Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex*" as a panelist on the
show "What's My Perversion"? Also, here is a picture of
Regis explaining THE MEANING OF LIFE to all the kiddies at
home!

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2014, READER'S!!
I am nominating myself for "Grand person of the year!"
Finally, the 12 &14 yo grand kids opted out of our, annual building of, "Lego Time's Square," and wanted to watch the two DVD's they received for -Hanukkah: "Grownup's" and "Grownup's II," (with Adam Sandler and various SNL cast members) all the while with the smart phones gripped in their hands, instead!
While I do like Sandler, I cannot, in good conscience, recommend the movies to any adult with half a brain! By the time the ball fell at midnight, in the REAL Times Square, I was praying for someone to shoot me and put me out of my misery - but the kid's loved them!
This being confessed to you, dear readers, I must also admit, that I cherish being able to spend my New Year's Eve with those children, no matter what...
So, brain-dead but content, I return to BCE, and will tell you who holds the Guinness World Record for the most time spent in front of a television camera. It's non-other than Regis Philbin!
I really like Regis, and he was a LOT better on the morning show with Kelly Rippa than the sports jock who replaced him!!
PS: @Lois from Oregon: Regards to Richard, I too did 12 years in Catholic School and lived to tell the tales. Were those nuns to operate the way they did when I went there, they would be doing serious jail time for child abuse! But, that was then, and this is now - and they are GONE, PTL!!
Love, love your Resolution, Lois, to, "Be a bigger Jerk" in the upcoming year - you Rock!!
Dale of Diamond Springs, Norprecipitationcali, took the day off.

Hmmm... Startin' the year out with a 'hard-azz' toughie of a question, eh, Boss?It's like that now, is it? Apparently so... Well, I'll be-a tellin' ya that my agent said that I should employ my best 'sneer' and 'push the envelope' on this one. But, I said "no"... that in the 'one-day' afterglow of 'The Season', I said that the whole 'peace/love/dove' thing should prevail (for the moment - it never lasts) and I should - at least this day - cooperate like a civilized person (whatever that is)...
~~~~~
The answer is Regis Philbin. Now, I'll be-a tellin' ya (again) that his name did not occur to me as I was cogitating the possible correct answer. No, it did not.
Why, might you ask (or not, but I'm-a tellin' ya anyway) would that be? Well, if I wasn't being civilized I would say cuz Regis Philbin weirds me out. Yes, it's true. He does. But, that's okay! I guess somebody's got to be 'Regis Philbin'. The only thing, though, is that he does 'Regis Philbin' so well it's damn'd scary, ya know what I mean? (Frankly, I suspect that 'Regis Philbin' is actually an ET sentient android that crash landed here and is sending his video image out into the void in an effort to be rescued. If he disappears, you'll know why.)
Memo to Lois of Oregon: Naked "Monkees" pictures? Um... No... Wait! Not just "No", but "Hell, No!" (I gotta know, though, which one you'd particularly prefer - I suspect yer a "Mickey" gal - or if'n it is a 'group' thing? - Har!)
Happy Birthday this day to:
Who else but Jack (66) gets a birthday kiss from an elephant?
(44) I wouldn't mind a private modeling session from her... Not-at-all...
Born this day:
(1920-1992) A member of my personal sci-fi pantheon...
(1936-1992) I loved this guy's ditties when I was a kid... I'd actually sing them... Yes, that does explain a lot, doesn't it?
The green "S" prevailed this year in the Rose Bowl, not the red one ...
And, Joe S answered:
Mary Pickford. No wait, that's yesterday's answer. I'm so mixed up, this happens to me every end of the year. Let's see, let's fire up old Fred, the magic wand and see what he says is today's answer. Yes it's Regis Philbin. Lord knows why, but it's like David Letterman said, There's still a few dollars out there that Regis hasn't got his hands on yet. I never could stand the guy and he thinks Notre Dame has the only football team worth existing. Loser. Every once in a while I would watch Regis and Kelly, because I really liked Kelly. I NEVER watched Regis and Kathy Lee because I detest Kathy Lee. I don't detest Regis, I just don't like him. I don't watch Kelly Ripa any more because Carla doesn't like Kelly. We both like Michael Strahan though but mostly on Sunday afternoons during football season.
So anyway Carla and I welcomed in the New Year with Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper and a bottle of St Julian sparkling grape juice. It's a tradition with us, although we used to hang out with Dick Clark, but you know, he's dead now. We never, ever, never venture away from the house on New Year's Eve. It's very dangerous out there. The last time we went out on New Year's Eve was in Rapid City SD in 1966. We went to a night club, I'm pretty sure it was called the Embers. Anyone remember that? Well we were nearly killed that night, first we were accosted by a man with a gun, then we were run off the road by a drunk driver.
Actually Kelly is a bit too thin for my taste but she has that outie. I find that fascinating. I've never known a woman with an outie, except for Kelly of course.
Oh, and Lois, Sally and I were talking about you today.
Oh, and one other thing, Michigan State won the Rose Bowl! Beat the crap out of favored Stanford 24-20. It wasn't that close.
The GED test, for decades the brand name for the high school equivalency exam, is about to undergo some changes.
On Thursday, an upgraded GED exam and two new competing equivalency tests offered in several states will usher in a new era in adult education testing.
The revamped test is intended to be more rigorous and better aligned with the skills needed for college and today's workplaces. The new test will only be offered on a computer, and it will cost more. What consumers pay for the test varies widely and depends on state assistance and other factors.
The GED test has been owned by the nonprofit American Council on Education since its inception.
Molly Corbett Broad, president of ACE, said that when it became clear a new test was needed she wanted it to include materials that would help test takers better prepare for the exam and get linked to resources that would help them plan. To do that ACE enlisted a partner, the for-profit company Pearson Vue Testing. The new test can make results available quickly and collect data that will help teachers better understand how their students did on the exam, so teaching can be adjusted.
Kaley Cuoco is starting 2014 as a married woman! The Big Bang Theory star tied the knot with Ryan Sweeting on Tuesday, Dec. 31, in a romantic New Year's Eve wedding in Southern California, her rep confirms to Us Weekly.
The actress, 27, and her tennis pro beau, 26, said "I do" at the Hummingbird Nest Ranch. Guests trickled in at 7 p.m., as Cuoco greeted them in a red dress, an insider tells Us. Before the nuptials began around 10 p.m., Cuoco changed into a petal pink Vera Wang gown.
"Yep :) #thesweetings @ryansweething," Cuoco wrote in the early hours via Instagram. Alongside the caption, the Big Bang star shared a sweet picture of the newlyweds kissing. Cuoco wore her strapless tulle Wang ball gown, which had a sweetheart neckline and detailed bodice with hand appliqué Chantilly lace accents.
Famous pals to attend the ceremony included her Big Bang costar and ex-boyfriend Johnny Galecki and Bachelorette alum Ali Fedotowsky, a source tells Us. (Cuoco and Galecki secretly dated for two years, and it was only after their split that Cuoco revealed about their past romance in September 2010.)
Archaeologists dig through the faint traces of the past to learn more about human history. And 2013 was a big year for new archaeology finds.
From royal tombs to the mysterious vanished inhabitants of Europe, here are some of the strangest and most exciting archaeology finds of the year.
In February, researchers announced a grave suspected of harboring the bones of King Richard III did indeed hold the royal's remains. The tomb was found under a parking lot in Leicester, England. Since then, a host of studies have revealed more about the once-reviled, crippled king's life and death. It turns out Richard III may have been a control freak who spoke with a lilt and was subjected to painful scoliosis treatment. And after several bruising head injuries, the king was buried in a hasty grave without any ceremony, analysis of the skeleton revealed.
In a dried-up lake in the Nevada desert, archaeologists unearthed signs of ancient rock art that dates to between 10,500 and 14,800 years ago. The rock art is the oldest in North America by several thousand years. But much remains unknown about the enigmatic lines and grooves carved into the limestone near Winnemucca Lake. Scientists aren't sure about the meaning of the rock art, though the images do seem quite similar to the second-oldest rock art in North America, which was found in Oregon.
A dying former civil rights lawyer convicted in a terrorism case and sentenced to 10 years in prison was released from prison on Tuesday after prosecutors and the Federal Bureau of Prisons made the recommendation to a judge.
"It's just really wonderful," 74-year-old Lynne Stewart said in a telephone interview after being freed from the Federal Medical Center Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas. "I'm very grateful to be free. We've been waiting months and months and months."
U.S. District Judge John G. Koeltl signed the release order after government lawyers filed a letter in Manhattan federal court earlier Tuesday saying Stewart qualified for early release because she's suffering from breast cancer that has metastasized to her lungs and bones and has less than 18 months to live.
He said Stewart, who had been undergoing treatment at the Fort Worth medical center, would be released when travel arrangements could be made.
Stewart left hours later with her husband, Ralph Poynter. They were headed home to New York.
Egypt has accused detained journalists from the Qatari-based Al-Jazeera television network of belonging to a "terrorist" group, saying they had ties with the blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood, the prosecution said Tuesday.
It was not immediately clear if all three journalists face the same accusation, the first prosecutors have brought against journalists since the government designated the Brotherhood a "terrorist" group last week.
Prosecutors had earlier ordered the detention of three journalists with Al-Jazeera's English channel, including Australian Peter Greste, after their arrest on Sunday in a Cairo hotel.
Other Al-Jazeera reporters remain in detention, including Abdullah Elshamy of the Arabic language station arrested on August 14 when police dispersed an Islamist protest camp in Cairo, killing hundreds in clashes.
A small Missouri brewery has responded to a cease and desist letter from Starbucks by sending the coffee chain a check to cover what it calls the profit from use of the word "Frappicino" - a check for $6.
Exit 6 Pub and Brewery in the St. Louis suburb of Cottleville named one of its brews the Frappicino, with one c instead of the two that Starbucks uses for its blended beverages. That prompted an attorney for Starbucks Coffee Co. to send Exit 6 a letter on Dec. 9.
The letter from attorney Anessa Owen Kramer noted that the Seattle-based company "is the owner of a number of world-famous trademarks, including the well-known FRAPPUCCINO trademark." It said that the words are "phonetically identical" and that Exit 6's use of Frappicino "is likely to cause confusion, mistake."
In his sarcastic response letter, Exit 6 owner Jeff Britton also wrote that the brewery "never thought that our beer drinking customers would have thought that the alcoholic beverage coming out of the tap would have actually been coffee from one of the many, many, many stores located a few blocks away."
Exit 6 posted the letter on its Facebook site and responded with a letter to "Mr. Bucks." The letter said Exit 6 would no longer use the term "Frappicino" and would instead refer to its beer as the "F Word."
Japan's population fell by a record 244,000 in 2013, according to health ministry estimates released on Wednesday, highlighting concerns over an ever-dwindling workforce supporting a growing number of pensioners.
An estimated 1,031,000 babies were born in 2013, down about 6,000 from a year earlier, the ministry said.
On the other hand, around 1,275,000 people died -- up about 19,000 from the previous year, the highest annual rise since World War II.
Japan is rapidly greying, with more than 20 percent of the population aged 65 or over -- one of the highest proportions of elderly people in the world. The country has very little immigration and any suggestion of opening its borders to young workers who could help plug the population gap provokes strong reactions among the public.
Adventurous eaters may get a rush out of flirting with death by eating a piece of puffer fish, but dolphins may experience something completely different.
Filmmakers at John Downer Productions recorded the dolphins snacking on the puffer fish for the documentary "Dolphins: Spy in the Pod." After eating the puffer fish, the dolphins seemed to enter a trance-like state.
"[They were] hanging around with their noses at the surface as if fascinated by their own reflection," John Downer, executive producer of the documentary, told International Business Times. "It reminded us of that craze a few years ago when people started licking toads to get a buzz."
Christie Wilcox, author of Discover's Science Sushi blog and a graduate student at the University of Hawaii, said that while dolphins were curious animals, she found it hard to believe that they were chasing the fish for a high.
In addition, she said that if the dolphins really wanted to get high, there were other sea critters that would fit the bill. "In many areas of the world, sea bream are known to produce vivid visual and auditory hallucinations, much like tripping on acid," she said. "And of course, people have used them recreationally."
Juanita Moore, a groundbreaking actress and an Academy Award nominee for her role as Lana Turner's black friend in the classic weeper "Imitation of Life," has died.
Actor Kirk Kelleykahn, her grandson, said that Moore collapsed and died Wednesday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 99, according to Kelleykahn. Accounts of her age have differed over the years.
Moore was only the fifth black performer to be nominated for an Oscar, receiving the nod for the glossy Douglas Sirk film that became a big hit and later gained a cult following. The 1959 tearjerker, based on a Fannie Hurst novel and a remake of a 1934 film, tells the story of a struggling white actress' rise to stardom, her friendship with a black woman and how they team up to raise their daughters as single mothers.
It brought supporting actress nominations for both Moore and Susan Kohner, who played Moore's daughter as a young adult attempting to pass as a white woman. Kohner's own background is Czech and Mexican. By the end, Turner's character is a star and her friend is essentially a servant. The death of Moore's character sets up the sentimental ending.
Moore also had an active career in the theater, starting at Los Angeles' Ebony Showcase Theatre in the early 1950s, a leading black-run theater. She also was a member of the celebrated Cambridge Players, with other performers including Esther Rolle and Helen Martin.
Her first film appearance was as a nurse in the 1949 film "Pinky." As with other black actresses, many of Moore's early roles were as maids. She told the Times that "real parts, not just in-and-out jobs," were opening up for black performers.
James Avery, the bulky character actor who laid down the law at home and on the job as the Honorable Philip Banks in "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," has died.
Avery's publicist, Cynthia Snyder, told The Associated Press that Avery died Tuesday in Glendale, California, following complications from open heart surgery. He was 68, Snyder said.
Avery, who stood more than 6 feet (2 metres) tall, played the family patriarch and a wealthy attorney and judge on the popular TV comedy that launched the acting career of Will Smith as Banks' troublemaking nephew.
Avery grew up in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and served in the Navy in Vietnam in the late 1960s. After returning to the states, he settled in California and studied drama and literature at the University of California at San Diego.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and stepson, Kevin Waters.
