In a speech delivered at the conference "A Soul for Europe," German filmmaker Wim Wenders says Europeans must believe in the power of their own imagery.

THIS IS BLUEGRASS CENTRAL IN NASHVILLE. I HAD COME DOWN TO SEE Alecia Nugent, A BEAUTIFUL LADY WITH HIGH CHEEKBONES AND A GORGEOUS VOICE, PERFORM. IN HER FIRST SET SHE PERFORMED MOST OF HER NEW ALBUM BACKED BY SOME OF THE BEST PICKING AND HARMONY I'VE HEARD LIVE IN A LONG TIME.
AT THE END OF THE SET I WAS IN A MIND TO LEAVE WHEN ALECIA ANNOUNCED THAT HER SECOND SET WOULD INCLUDE SOME SURPRISE GUESTS. SO, KNOWING THIS TOWN, I STUCK AROUND. ALECIA OPENED THE SECOND SET WITH A COUPLE OF HER OWN SONGS AND THEN INVITED Bradley Walker UP TO PERFORM A DUET WITH HER.
THEIR VERSION OF WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO US (IT'S ALL UP TO YOU) IS STUNNING. BRAD DID A COUPLE OF HIS SONGS WITH ALICIA DOING HARMONY AND THEN CARL JACKSON CAME UP TO ADD HIS VOICE TO WHAT TURNED OUT TO BE AN EXTRAORDINARY AND BEAUTIFUL NIGHT OF MUSIC.
THANK YOU ALECIA! THANKYOU BRAD! THANKYOU CARL! A SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL THE GREAT MUSICIANS IN THE BAND! AND THAT'S WHY I LOVE NASHVILLE!
Even if you're not from the Chicago Area, you and your kids will love this!

Fortunately Bassett and Fishburne are actually secondary characters in this film…..the real star is Keke Palmer who plays Akeelah Anderson…an eleven year old girl living in south LA and going to Crenshaw Junior High. She is just another black pre-teen with all the pressures of growing up with a single working mom, a gangbanger wanna be brother and a poor ghetto school with no resources. Akeelah is blessed (or cursed) with a love of words that she inherited from he deceased Dad (Wolfgang Bodison - he played a cop in the movie "Freeway" (1996) and she just loves to spell and play scrabble.
Her principal forces her to participate in a local spelling Bee because he knows she's good at it. She doesn't want to do it because her friends will call her a Nerd and a Brainiac. Compete she does...and win she does...but she needs help so the principle arranges for the reclusive Dr. Larabee to coach her...but they need the consent of Akeelah's mom to go on to the state finals and her mom is just too busy to care.
What ensues is Akeelah going to the national spelling Bee finals and saving her family, Dr. Larabee and her whole neighborhood...by being so darn smart and inspiring..she even wins over the local thug rapper Derrick-T (Eddie Steeples - "Darnell" on "My Name is Earl") with her wonderful way with words.
This movie was produced by "Starbucks" (the Coffee People) and bordered on being a bit Disneyesque, but I must admit that I was chewing my nails and cheering for Akeelah all the way to the end when she had to spell "Pulchritude"!
Purple Gene gives "Akeelah and the Bee" 7 jump rope skipping hard to spell Greek and Latin based spelling words out of 10 for being so semi-sweet, inspiring and not one person saying "you go girl"!

Irish rocker and humanitarian Bono will become a knight of the British empire - but the U2 frontman won't be called "Sir."
Britain confirmed Saturday Bono will receive his honorary knighthood from the British ambassador to Ireland, David Reddaway, in a Dublin ceremony shortly after New Year's Day.
The Dubliner, whose real name is Paul Hewson, won't be entitled to use the title "Sir" because he is not a national of Britain or the Commonwealth of former British colonies.

Perry Como has grabbed the top two spots on Billboard's ringtones chart with "Jingle Bells" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," 61 years after the crooner first enjoyed a Billboard chart-topper.
Como collected his first No. 1 single on a Billboard chart when "Till the End of Time" moved into pole position in September 1945. The song ruled the chart for 10 weeks.
His version of "Jingle Bells" first appeared on his 1946 album, "Merry Christmas Music," which was his first No. 1 LP.
CBS has announced that the latest season of The King of Queens will also be its last.
Now in its ninth year, the blue-collar family comedy is currently the longest-running sitcom on television, taking over the title this year when Will & Grace and That '70s Show left the airwaves.
The King of Queens flirted with cancellation earlier in the year, finally receiving a 13-episode renewal for 2006-07. The show is slated to head back to Monday nights at 9:30 p.m. on Apr. 9, where it will ride out the rest of its existence on the tails of Two and a Half Men, which is still frequently the only sitcom to break into the Nielsen ratings' top 25 each week.
A woman hopped aboard buses, greeted passengers with "Merry Christmas" and handed each an envelope containing a card and a $50 bill before stepping off and repeating the process on another bus.
She did it so quickly that descriptions of the woman varied among surprised Spokane Transit Authority passengers on several routes Thursday, The Spokesman-Review newspaper reported Friday.
The woman gave envelopes to about 20 passengers. Each was sealed with a sticker that said: "To a friend from a friend."
The woman, accompanied by one or two young boys, pulled the envelopes out of a cloth satchel. The buses were pulling away from stops before riders even knew what happened.

Anna Nicole Smith was ordered Thursday to bring her infant daughter to California for paternity tests sought by a former boyfriend who claims he is the father of the child, the man's publicist said in a statement.
Smith's ex-boyfriend, Larry Birkhead, a Los Angeles photographer, filed a lawsuit in October claiming he is the father of Dannielynn Hope Marshall Stern, who was born in September in the Bahamas. If Birkhead is confirmed to be the father, he could receive visitation or custody rights and possibly a large amount of child support.
The birth certificate lists Dannielynn's father as attorney Howard K. Stern, Smith's current companion.
A producer's lawsuit claiming actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire blocked the release of a movie made before they became stars has been dismissed.
"Don's Plum" was shot over six days in 1995 and 1996, before DiCaprio made "Titanic" or Maguire became "Spider-Man." The low-budget, black-and-white film was about a group of Los Angeles teens who met every day at a diner to discuss their lives.
The lawsuit claimed the actors "put the word out that they were opposed to any distribution" of the film and that offers from distributors "disappeared overnight."
Superior Court Judge Mary Ann Murphy heard arguments in the case Sept. 27 and issued her ruling Wednesday, according to court records released Thursday. Murphy said no further changes could be made to the already revised lawsuit filed by producer John Schindler in December 2004.
The Federal Communications Commission late on Friday defended its decision to fine 20 CBS Corp. television stations $550,000 for airing a brief breast flash by pop singer Janet Jackson.
The agency rejected CBS's argument that her performance during the live 2004 Super Bowl football halftime show did not violate decency standards that restrict nudity on broadcast television.
"The FCC reasonably concluded that, although brief, this display of nudity violated longstanding federal prohibitions on the broadcast of indecent material," it said in a brief filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
A man used flammable liquid to light himself on fire, apparently to protest a San Joaquin Valley school district's decision to change the names of winter and spring breaks to Christmas and Easter vacation.
The man, who was not immediately identified, on Friday also set fire to a Christmas tree, an American flag and a revolutionary flag replica, said Fire Captain Garth Milam.
Kern County Sheriff's Deputy John Leyendecker said the man had a sign that read: "(expletive) the religious establishment and KHSD."
On Thursday, the Kern High School Board of Trustees voted to use the names Christmas and Easter instead of winter and spring breaks.
A 19th century hand-carved wooden angels are on display on the altar of Holy Family Catholic Church Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006 in Chicago after two years of restoration and gilding with 23-carat gold leaf. The orchestra of angels created by Charles Olivier-Dauphin in Montreal in 1870, includes flute, clarinet, violin, French horn and drum players that sat in disrepair for decades in the church's organ loft. They are on display for close up viewing during services around Christmas and New Years Day then the collection will be retired to the church's second balcony.

Within weeks of Hitler's 1933 rise to power, the iron gates slammed shut on inmates of the first Nazi concentration camps. It was the start of an unparalleled experiment in persecution and genocide that expanded over the next 12 years into a pyramid of ghettos, Gestapo prisons, slave labor camps and, ultimately, extermination factories.
Collecting and analyzing fragmented reports, researchers at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum say they have pinpointed some 20,000 places of detention and persecution - three times more than they estimated just six years ago.
And soon they will know much more.
They are about to have their first access to millions of documents locked away for a half century in the sprawling archive of the International Tracing Service, an arm of the International Committee of the Red Cross, in the central German resort town of Bad Arolsen.
Songwriter Dennis Linde, who wrote Elvis Presley's last major hit, "Burning Love," has died. He was 63.
"Burning Love" was a hit for Presley in 1972. He also wrote "Goodbye Earl," a hit by the Dixie Chicks in 1999 and "Callin' Baton Rouge," a Garth Brooks hit in 1993.
Linde was born in Abilene, Texas, and became hooked after his grandmother gave him a $14 guitar.
Friends remember him as a man with a quick wit who blended quirky lyrics with up-tempo melodies.
He was also a reclusive homebody who would rather spend time with family than appear at music industry functions, including those honoring him with awards.
His other songs included "It Sure Is Monday" recorded by Mark Chesnutt, "Janie Baker's Love Slave" by Shenandoah, "John Deere Green" by Joe Diffie and "Queen of My Double Wide Trailer" by Sammy Kershaw.
He was elected to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2001 and selected as BMI's Songwriter of the Year in 1994.
