Paul Krugman: European Crass Warfare (nytimes.com)
So here's the situation: the economy is facing its worst slump in decades. The usual response to an economic downturn, cutting interest rates, isn't working. Large-scale government aid looks like the only way to end the economic nosedive.
Roger Ebert: I've got the sweetest set of wheels in town
It is thinkable that within a year, there will be no more new Fords, no more Dodges, no more Chevys to drive to the levee. It is less than a year since the manufacture of Postum was discontinued. Meccano sets are made of plastic. Piece by piece, the American prospect is being dismantled. Will the pulse of teenage boys quicken at the sight of the new Kia or Hyundai? Will they envy their pal because his dad drives a Camaro? I think that's all over with. There will be a void in our national imagination. Let me tell you about how it used to be.
Steven Rea: From stage to screen, Nixon's the one for Frank Langella (The Philadelphia Inquirer)
"I really did think it was going to be seven weeks, in and out," says Frank Langella, recalling his decision, in early 2006, to star as Richard M. Nixon in Peter Morgan's play, "Frost/Nixon." Set for a short run at the Donmar Warehouse Theatre in London, the play - about the series of interviews conducted by talk show host David Frost in 1977 with the only U.S. president ever to resign from office - won hugely favorable reviews.
Will Harris: Pauley Perrette, Co-star of "NCIS" (bullz-eye.com)
On the still-growing fanbase of "NCIS": It's not so weird to us because we knew very early on. This is fun, and this is great. And it's such a different kind of show that once you start watching it, you're hooked.
Roger Ebert: The year's best foreign films (I hope they play in your state)
It was not a great year for foreign films. In America, that is. Or, more exactly in that America between New York and Los Angeles. Distributors, even those specializing in indie films, have grown shy of movies that look like tricky sales, and with the economic downturn, the situation has grown more depressing. I saw subtitled films that would be great in any year, however, and they are on this list.
Caroline Kennedy has expressed interest in replacing Hillary Clinton as the junior senator from New York. Is she qualified and is she the best person for the position?
Charlie answered:
The main question Marty, I'm sorry, is poorly formulated. Looking around, I'm going with
E 15
Since van Sant had apparently started with the project around 1992.
You will notice though, that if 15 is a correct answer, so would be any choice between 0 and 14, since negative numbers can be ruled out here.
I haven't seen the film yet, but you do have me psyched. Everything I've looked at suggests it must be a very powerful piece of work.
Other talk around San Francisco suggests we are going to hell in a hand basket, but that's a different matter. I'm just now feeling compelled to call attention to this for some reason, though it's 2.5 hours long.
Enough for now.

Sally, in snowy Northern NJ, said:
Hanukkah is right around my corner and I have a pile of gifts sitting on a table behind me, waiting to be wrapped, but what is gamma doing? She is obsessing over answers for BCE:
"Trivia Question Of The Day!"
And, my only consolation is that I'll just bet that the Professor is doing the same thing! "G'afternoon Professor," said while tipping my hat and with a sly, "bring it on" smile on my face...
Now, down to the business dejour:
Answer 1: This question is very ambiguous. By, "involved with the making of "Milk," do you mean from idea concept or the actual filming from the readings to the shooting end? I will assume that you mean from the first period of time when Van Sant thought about the "Milk" project. In that case, the answer would be (E) of 15 years.
"For the 56-year-old Van Sant, Milk was a project nearly two decades in the making-one that went through multiple scripts and iterations." This is stated by ARMISTEAD MAUPIN ("Tales of the City" novels) in a recent interview with Van Sant. . Who am I to argue with Maupin - who's stories I love?
Kappy, in Philly replied:
Since involved was the key word in this question, I am going with E, 15 years.
MAM responded:
Answer . . . E 15

A novel of over ___?___ words, none of which contained
___(3 words)___, was written by ___?___.
Ernest Vincent Wright wrote a novel with over 50,000 words, none of which containing the letter e.
Source
And, Charlie was first, and correct, with:
I thought I might win yesterday, but Sally is hanging tough. Today, the tie-breaker is easier then the main question, the answer there is
A novel of over 50,000 words, none of which contained the letter "e", (or "E"), was written by Ernest Vincent Wright,
who had three of them in his name.
Probably interesting, but not high on my reading list these days...
Sally said:
TIE BREAKER GUESS (cough, choke, mutter, grumble):

Here is tie-breaker question #7: (Anybody may answer, but only Charlie & Sally are in contention for the prize that was scheduled to have been awarded this past Monday.)
Fill in the blanks:

Milk - In Limited Theaters Now - WIDE Release on December 12th
After moving to San Francisco, the middle-aged New Yorker, Harvey Milk, became a Gay Rights activist and city politician. On his third attempt, he was elected to San Francisco's Board of Supervisors in 1977, making him the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the USA. The following year, both he and the city's mayor, George Moscone, were shot to death by former city supervisor, Dan White, who blamed his former colleagues for denying White's attempt to rescind his resignation from the board.
Mr. Milk had been the subject of several books and the Academy Award-winning documentary feature, The Times of Harvey Milk (1984); but Milk (2008) is the first fictional feature to explore private aspects of the man's personal life and career.

The sponsors of Proposition 8 asked the California Supreme Court on Friday to nullify the marriages of the estimated 18,000 same-sex couples who exchanged vows before voters approved the ballot initiative that outlawed gay unions.
The Yes on 8 campaign filed a brief arguing that because the new law holds that only marriages between a man and a woman are recognized or valid in California, the state can no longer recognize the existing same-sex unions. The document reveals for the first time that opponents of same-sex marriage will fight in court to undo those unions that already exist.
"Proposition 8's brevity is matched by its clarity. There are no conditional clauses, exceptions, exemptions or exclusions," reads the brief co-written by Kenneth Starr, republican porn fan and dean of Pepperdine University's law school and the former independent counsel who investigated President Bill Clinton.
Both Attorney General Jerry Brown, whose office is scheduled to submit its own brief to the court Friday, and gay rights groups maintain that the gay marriage ban may not be applied retroactively.

French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy on Friday donated the 238,000 euros (330,000 dollars) she has made so far from her latest music album to Haitian children's charities.
"I'm pleased that music can be used for this," said the supermodel-turned- singer wife of President Nicolas Sarkozy as she signed over three cheques at a Paris ceremony.
"Comme si de rien n'etait" (Simply), Bruni-Sarkozy's third release, came out in France in July and has since sold 190,000 copies here and 220,000 abroad.
GSN is moving forward with its revival of "The Newlywed Game," targeting a spring premiere for the classic show.
The cable channel -- formerly known as Game Show Network -- has ordered 40 half-hour episodes from executive producer Michael Davies, the man behind "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." Shooting will begin next February in New York, and the show will air weekdays.
Davies said the show will be updated in an organic way.
"Marriage has changed over the years -- what couples talk about, what they fight about," said Davies. "So there will be a lot of updating just by the fact of our casting. In doing presentations, it's become clear to us that wives today are far more vocal than in the previous episodes. There's just a lot of guys looking concerned that they're about to get in trouble -- and usually they do. It's thoroughly entertaining."

Oscar-winning British director and actor Richard Attenborough was in a stable condition after an accident at his home, a hospital spokesman said Saturday.
The 85-year-old director of "Gandhi" was forced to pull out of a plaque-unveiling ceremony on Thursday after suffering a fall.
Attenborough had been due to honour "Brief Encounter" star Celia Johnson on the centenary of her birth, but a spokeswoman for the event said: "He had a fall and he wasn't able to do it."
China, widely criticized for its censorship of the media, this week blocked access to The New York Times, the newspaper said on Saturday.
When computer users in cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou tried to connect on Friday to nytimes.com, they received a message that the site was not available, the newspaper said.
There was no access to the site from Beijing late on Saturday without the protection of a virtual private network (VPN).
The Foreign Ministry said this week that China, which eased its rein on the Internet before and during the Beijing Olympics in August, was within its rights to block websites with content illegal under Chinese law.
Warner Music Group ordered YouTube on Saturday to remove all music videos by its artists from the popular online video-sharing site after contract negotiations broke down.
The order could affect hundreds of thousands of videos clips, as it covers Warner Music's recorded artists as well as the rights for songs published by its Warner/Chappell unit, which includes many artists not signed to Warner Music record labels.
The talks fell apart early on Saturday because Warner wants a bigger share of the huge revenue potential of YouTube's massive visitor traffic. There were no reports on what Warner was seeking.

Proving that no good deed goes unpunished, the state's high court on Thursday said a would-be Good Samaritan accused of rendering her friend paraplegic by pulling her from a wrecked car "like a rag doll" can be sued.
California's Supreme Court ruled that the state's Good Samaritan law only protects people from liability if the are administering emergency medical care, and that Lisa Torti's attempted rescue of her friend didn't qualify.
Alexandra Van Horn was in the front passenger seat of a car that slammed into a light pole at 45 mph on Nov. 1, 2004, according to her negligence lawsuit.
Torti was a passenger in a car that was following behind the vehicle and stopped after the crash. Torti said when she came across the wreck she feared the car was going to explode and pulled Van Horn out. Van Horn testified that Torti pulled her out of the wreckage "like a rag doll." Van Horn blamed her friend for her paralysis.
Cinema has made a low-key return to Saudi Arabia after a three decade absence but a sharp reaction by the religious police chief shows efforts to relax Saudi's strict Islamic laws face tough opposition.
A locally produced comedy, "Menahi," premiered in two cultural centers in Jeddah and Taif this month before mixed-gender audiences, a taboo in Saudi Arabia whose strict Islamic rules ban unrelated men and women from mixing.
Turnout for the movie, produced by billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal's media company Rotana, was so big the film had to be played eight times a day over a 10-day period, the organizers said.
Showing the film was the latest attempt to introduce reforms by King Abdullah, who has said the world's largest oil exporter cannot stand still while the world changes around it.
