Marc Dion: Nelson Mandela Is Dead? Who Cares? (Creators Syndicate)
The apartheid fence is going up in America, rich on one side, poor on the other. Welcome to shantytown. And we have no hero, no voice bidding us resist, just a hundred thousand voices oozing fake outrage over the political gaffe of the moment. It's why I couldn't grieve for Nelson Mandela. I'm bitter because no one will do for me what he did for his people.

The comedian talks about the effect of her father's depressive illness on her childhood and how he burned all her clothes, her strong feminist mother and having her own daughters later in life.
C. Coville: "5 Beliefs About Surviving a Disaster (That Can Kill You)" (Cracked)
If you read the news, you'll know that humans are constantly running into things that put their lives in danger: crime, natural disasters, ill-advised riding-mower volleyball games. Despite this, most of us remain in blissful denial about how we'll react during terrible, life-threatening events. For example ...
Zamenhof Day (Zamenhofa Tago in Esperanto), also called Esperanto Day, is celebrated on 15 December, the birthday of Esperanto creator L. L. Zamenhof. It is the most widely celebrated day in Esperanto culture.

Whoa! I didn't even know there was an Esperanto culture. Ya learn somthin new every day. I know about the made-up language, Esperanto, that a few people speak (but probably not as many as those who speak Klingon), but who knew there was a culture. Anyway the date is December 15th to commemorate the birthday of the creator of Esperanto, L.L. Zamenhof, who was born on December 17th.
During my "research" of this question I came across the web site of an "Esperanto Circle," a "club" with meeting notices, news and announcements all written in English. Just sayin.
If anyone is interested, attached is a picture of the gold and jade Mao statue. The gold is pretty impressive, but that hunk of white jade it's sitting on is fairly mind blowing. Such an appropriate tribute for a man who caused so many of his countrymen to starve to death while imposing a political philosophy based on spreading the wealth around and getting it out of the hands of some elite ruling class!

This winter, tens of thousands of birdwatchers across North America will bundle up and brave the elements, all in the name of science.
The National Audubon Society's 114th annual Christmas Bird Count begins Saturday (Dec. 14). Volunteer citizen scientists in all 50 U.S. states, all Canadian provinces, and parts of Mexico, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Pacific Islands are set to take part in the yearly tradition, armed with bird guides, binoculars and checklists.
The annual count is the longest-running census of bird populations, and is used to help scientists assess the health of different species, said Geoff LeBaron, director of the Christmas Bird Count (CBC).
Participation in the count, which runs from Dec. 14 through Jan. 5, 2014, has been steadily growing, he added.
A massive cross that serves as part of a war memorial on a San Diego hilltop must be dismantled because it has been found to violate a constitutional ban on government endorsement of religion, a federal judge grudgingly ruled on Thursday.
The decision by U.S. District Judge Larry Burns marks the latest development in a long-running legal battle over the 43-foot-tall cross, a local landmark that has stood on top of Mount Soledad since 1954 and is visible for miles.
Burns stayed his order to give the Obama administration and the association that erected the cross, which have fought its removal all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, a chance to file another appeal. Otherwise, he said, the monument must be taken down within 90 days.
The case hinged on whether it is legal for a religious symbol to be prominently displayed on public land and whether the cross violated the U.S. Constitution's requirement on separation of church and state.
The Mount Soledad cross has been the subject of litigation since 1989, when two veterans sued San Diego to get it off city land. In 2006, Congress intervened in the dispute, resulting in the federal government taking ownership of the property.
Pennsylvania State Police say they found 20 pounds of marijuana in boxes wrapped as Christmas presents inside a minivan after a traffic stop.
The Centre Daily Times reports that 38-year-old Randy Jesus Valdivia, of Surfside, Fla., faces felony drug charges after the stop on Interstate 80 near State College.
Police say they became suspicious after Valdivia was stopped Thursday afternoon, and got him to agree to a search.
They say they found 20 pounds of weed vacuum-sealed inside large boxes wrapped as Christmas gifts.
US casino operator Las Vegas Sands said Friday it has dropped plans to invest over $30 billion in a mega-resort scheme that promised 260,000 direct and indirect jobs for Spain, where one in four people are unemployed.
The company, owned by US billionaire Sheldon Adelson, said it would "continue aggressive pursuit of opportunities in Asia" where it already operates properties in Singapore and Macao.
In a statement, Adelson said the company "did not see a path in which the criteria needed to move forward with this large-scale development can be reached. As a result we will no longer be pursuing this opportunity."
Las Vegas Sands, the world's biggest casino company by market value, said in February it had chosen Alcorcon, a suburb of Madrid, as the site for what would have been Europe's largest resort.
The "Eurovegas" project called for the construction of four casino complexes with 12 hotels providing 36,000 rooms, nine theatres, three golf courses, and convention centres over a period of 10-15 years.
Companies in New Mexico and Missouri could begin slaughtering horses within a few weeks after a federal appeals court removed a temporary ban that was preventing domestic horse slaughter from resuming for the first time since 2007.
The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver lifted an emergency injunction Friday that it had issued in November after animal protection groups appealed the ruling of a federal judge in Albuquerque. The judge said the U.S. Department of Agriculture followed proper procedure in issuing permits to Valley Meat Co. in Roswell, N.M., Rains Natural Meats of Gallatin, Mo., and Responsible Transportation in Sigourney, Iowa.
The appeals court's order Friday said the groups "failed to meet their burden for an injunction pending appeal."
Blair Dunn, an attorney for Valley Meat and Rains Natural Meats, said the order lifts the emergency status of the case, meaning it will likely be months before a final decision is issued.
The plants would become the first horse slaughterhouses to operate in the U.S. since Congress effectively banned horse slaughter by eliminating funding for inspections at the plants. Congress restored that funding in 2011, but the USDA did not approve the first permits for horse slaughterhouses until this summer.
Initiates walk in a field in Qunu, in the Eastern Cape December 14, 2013. Every year, thousands of youths leave their parents to spend weeks in the care of traditional leaders at an initiation school where they are circumcised, a rite of passage commonly referred to as "Ukwaluka" or "going to the mountain". Former South African President Mandela, who died on December 5 aged 95, will be buried in his family homestead in Qunu on Sunday after a state funeral.

A federal judge has ruled in favour of a polygamist family that stars in the TV reality show "Sister Wives," saying that key parts of Utah's polygamy laws are unconstitutional.
U.S. District Court Judge Clark Waddoups says in the Friday night ruling that the phrase in Utah law that references cohabitating with another person is a violation of the First Amendment.
Kody Brown and his four wives filed their lawsuit in July 2011. Washington D.C.-based attorney Jonathan Turley argued the case before Waddoups in January.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports Waddoups also took a narrow interpretation of the words "marry" and "purports to marry" in his ruling. That means that bigamy remains illegal in Utah only in the literal sense, such as when someone fraudulently acquires multiple marriage licenses.
Financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald, which saw 658 of its 1,000 employees killed in the Sept. 11 attacks, has nearly completed a settlement with American Airlines and insurance carriers, according to documents filed in federal court.
A final signed agreement may be ready by Tuesday, Cantor Fitzgerald attorney John Stoviak told Judge Alvin Hellerstein in a Thursday proceeding.
Stoviak told the judge the amount of the agreement will be made public after court approval, expected next year. Cantor originally sued for more than $1 billion in damages after the 2001 attacks, in which hijacked airliners crashed into the World Trade Center's twin towers.
Cantor Fitzgerald's headquarters were on the top floors of the north tower, which was struck by American Airlines Flight 11. The firm accused American of negligence in allowing hijackers to board the plane and crash it into the tower. American responded that it couldn't have predicted such an attack and that it followed federal security regulations.
American spokesman Sean Collins said Friday that the airline's insurers had agreed to settle the claims but the airline didn't admit liability.

A public art project in Detroit that was built in the shell of a decaying neighbourhood is burning down, bit by bit.
Authorities are investigating at least eight fires at the installation known as the Heidelberg Project, but authorities haven't named any suspects.
But they believe someone is targeting the quirky art project, and they don't know why.
The project is an interactive, outdoor sculpture park and includes quirky objects such as shoes, clocks, vinyl records, stuffed animals and other found and discarded objects. Heidelberg Project founder Tyree Guyton isn't talking to the media, but has vowed to carry on and restore the exhibit.
