Susan Estrich: Happy Hanukkah (creators.com)
I like Hanukkah. It's a very nice holiday, as Jewish holidays go; one of the few where the Jews actually won, as opposed to having the Temple destroyed, or fleeing the divided sea, or being spared from the evil Haman. Usually, it's enough if we survive. Often, we don't even do that.
Froma Harrop: America's Clean-Energy Defeatists (creators.com)
The United States used to be the can-do country. A respect for science married to the entrepreneurial spirit propelled America to the forefront of global progress and made it rich. But a late-20th century malaise had crept in, fueled by a conservative hostility to modern science and public investment.
Dr. David Lipschitz: Prolong Your Life with the True Message of Christmas (creators.com)
More than anything, love is the essence of spirituality and the key to longevity. Love assures a better and longer life. Men who are in longstanding, loving, intimate and monogamous relationships live 10 years longer than those who are not. While women in relationships do not get quite such a large benefit, they live an average of three years longer.
Greg Kot: Arctic Monkeys take new path (Chicago Tribune)
Sometimes you have to slow up or take a detour to get to your next destination - as Alex Turner learned on the way to the Arctic Monkeys' third album, "Humbug" (Domino), released a few months ago.
Xan Brooks: "Daniel Day-Lewis: 'I'm not unapproachable'" (guardian.co.uk)
Daniel Day-Lewis will live rough, break bones and work through pneumonia to get inside his characters. It may be absurd, he tells Xan Brooks, but then, he's in an absurd business. He talks about his latest film, 'Nine.'

The craft of bookbinding originated in India, where religious sutra were copied on to palm leaves (cut into two, lengthwise) with a metal stylus. The leaf was then dried and rubbed with ink, which would form a stain in the wound. The finished leaves were given numbers, and two long twines were threaded through each end through wooden boards. When closed, the excess twine would be wrapped around the boards to protect the leaves of the book. Buddhist monks took the idea through Persia, Afghanistan, and Iran, to China in the first century BC.

This is a great site, and you can read everything you ever wanted to know about the origin of books and their bindings - Bookbinding
I took some classes about making paper, and bookbinding, several years back, and remember them fondly. 'Making' paper takes time, but it is very rewarding I must say.
PS: JoeS, your granddaughters are GORGEOUS, almost as beautiful as mine! "Thank Heaven's for Little Girls," but my grandson, however, is a jewel! :)

If asked to list bird families, where would the Trogonidae be on your list? Chances are, way down or not at all. However, these exquisite birds are well worth a look. Here are ten of the thirty nine species.

Saturday afternoon's red carpet event at the theater on the city's North Side will be followed by special performances, panel discussions and screenings. Others in attendance included talk-show host Bonnie Hunt.

Pop legend Elton John is to sell off thousands articles of his clothing, including outrageous outfits from his concerts, in a London shop beginning on Saturday as part of a charity fundraiser.
John, and his partner David Furnish, officially inaugurated the shop at Covent Garden in the heart of the capital at a ceremony Friday evening, in an event they are calling "Out of the Closet".
Proceeds of the sale, the fifth he has organised, will go towards the singer's AIDS charity.
Shoppers will be able to buy some of the costumes he has used in the course of his musical career, such as pairs of the singer's sky-high platform shoes and the out-sized spectacles.
French rock legend Johnny Hallyday had a botched operation in France and is now in a medically induced coma in a Los Angeles hospital as he recovers from surgery to fix the damage, his producer said.
Hallyday is France's biggest rock star, though little known outside of Europe. Beyond his music, Belgian-born Hallyday - whose real name is Jean-Philippe Smet - is best known for his glitz, amorous affairs, Harley-Davidson motorcycles and a Frenchness as absolute as Elvis Presley's Americanness.
Police in Paris were investigating an alleged attack on Dr. Stephane Delajoux - the French surgeon who first operated on Hallyday - as he left a friend's home overnight, judicial officials said.
Hallyday had an operation overnight Wednesday to Thursday at L.A.'s Cedars Sinai hospital to fix lingering back trouble from a Nov. 26 operation in Paris, led by Delajoux, for a herniated disc.
A Canadian science fiction writer has been arrested after authorities allege he refused to comply with U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers during an inspection at the Blue Water Bridge.
Customs spokesman Ron Smith told The Associated Press that Peter Watts of Toronto was detained Tuesday in Port Huron.
Smith said Watts was travelling into Canada when his vehicle was selected for inspection.
The Times Herald reports Watts was charged with assaulting, obstructing and resisting a police officer, was released and is due back in court Dec. 22.

The porn family feud that played out in federal court this week ended in a draw Friday when a jury ruled that Larry Flynt's estranged nephews infringed on their famous uncle's trademark when they launched their own smut business, but did not invade his privacy and were not liable for the substantial attorney fees both sides rang up.
The jury of four men and four women rendered its verdict after a four-day trial, during which they sat next to a big-screen TV that was used to repeatedly display blown-up photos of porn DVD boxes featuring naked women on the front and people engaged in all sorts of contortions on the back.
As both sides debated what constitutes an elegant sex film as opposed to a trashy one, jurors sat stone-faced, observing posters for films with titles like "Hot Showers" and "Sex at Your Service."
After about three hours of deliberations Friday, they concluded that Flynt's nephews, Jimmy Flynt Jr. and his brother, Dustin Flynt, did indeed infringe on their uncle's trademark when they produced films with just the word "FLYNT" in large capital letters above the titles.
Detroit police have twice mistaken film crews shooting scenes involving weapons with criminals in recent months.
The Detroit News reports Saturday that in both cases the moviemakers hadn't obtained the proper permits from the city.
Four crew members from Detroit-based B.U.P. Films were in court Thursday after receiving tickets for possession and brandishing facsimile weapons during filming Nov. 5. A hearing was set for Feb. 18.
B.U.P. Films production assistant DeAndre King says the crew didn't think it needed a permit to film at a private home.

Sarah Palin made a surprise appearance on "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" on Friday - and turned the tables on actor William Shatner.
In recent appearances on the late-night television show, Shatner has adopted a serious pose and recited some of Palin's less serious observations.
He was brought out again Friday to read passages from Palin's blockbuster "Going Rogue." The carefully selected passages included ones about rapper Kid Rock and stalking sheep.
Afterward, it was Palin's turn to read from Shatner's autobiography, "Up Till Now." The former Alaska governor's selections included one in which Shatner talks about visiting an African elephant "in my underwear."
A man who said he spent two decades collecting Ecstasy pills of all colors and shapes as a hobby has turned to police for help after they were stolen - because he said some of them are poisonous.
Police say the 46-year-old man, who was not identified, decided to report the theft despite the illegal nature of the collection because he was worried about the possible consequences if anybody were to swallow one of the poisoned pills.
It was not immediately clear why about 40 red-and-white pills out of the 2,400-pill-strong collection would be poisoned, but the police said they fear the drugs could be lethal if swallowed.
According to a police statement, the man gathered the pills over a 20 year period and carefully stored them in coin collecting folders.
The pills' street value is estimated at euro11,000 ($16,200).
