Not long ago, a guy with a knife tried to rob the place. He showed the clerk the knife and demanded cartons of cigarettes. The clerk, who does not own the store, wouldn't give up the cigarettes.

Ted Rall: Trump Gets Away With Stuff Because He Does (Creators Syndicate)
Nothing has ever been less deniable than the president's imperviousness to, well, everything. Trump's haters hate it; his fans love it; everyone accepts it. A month ago, Trump's lawyers for real argued in open court that if their client actually were to go on a shooting spree in midtown Manhattan, he couldn't be charged with a crime until he was no longer president.

Lenore Skenazy: White-Hot White Van Hysteria (Creators Syndicate)
White van hysteria has hit a new high with the mayor of Baltimore warning his citizens to not even park near a white van. People in at least one of these vehicles, he said, are coming to sex-traffic young women and sell their body parts. Neither of these things is true …. There were about half a million commercial vans sold in 2017 alone. The average vehicle lasts 10 years. There are highways full of guys in white vans all across America because that's what a whole lot of them drive for work. In the back are … tools. Being freaked out by a van is like being freaked out by a pigeon.

Susan Estrich: In the Meantime, the Real Deal (Creators Syndicate)
The Senate will fight about the trial. How soon? How long? How long will it take to agree on how soon it will be? There are no new facts. The witnesses have spoken. There is no defense, which is why the Republicans will fight about everything else. Barring a rebirth of the Republican Party of Abraham Lincoln, the Senate will eventually vote along partisan lines to acquit President Donald Trump of the House's "high Crimes and Misdemeanors" charge. … Republicans used to claim ownership of values in politics. Trump cost them that. Their vote to save him will be their ultimate surrender. They will save him, and then he will let them drown.

Susan Estrich: Lock Him Up (Creators Syndicate)
His staff used to brag that he was Donald Trump before there was Donald Trump. That was before he pled guilty but after he took to blaming his wife for the misuse of official campaign funds that allegedly financed his extramarital affairs. Trump before, during and after Trump is more like it. Liar, liar, pants on fire. Rep. Duncan Hunter inherited his seat in Congress, a charter member of the lucky sperm club who utterly lacked political experience when he ran for his father's seat.

Froma Harrop: Not Much Romance in Santa's Toy Warehouse (Creators Syndicate)
A fixture of family Christmas movies is worldly-wise children recovering some of their innocence. "Miracle on 34th Street" (1947) provides an early example.

Froma Harrop: Warren's Problems Go Beyond Health Care (Creators Syndicate)
I asked one of Warren's ardent admirers about the political risks in her health plan. Well, Warren has changed it, the friend said. Rather than immediately put America on single-payer, Warren now wants to first offer a public option - a government-run health plan that would compete with private insurers. BUT come her third year in office, she'd move everyone into a single-payer system.

Dogs. This phobia is usually caused by an frightening experience with a dog during childhood. While the fear of dogs isn't irrational, because some dogs are dangerous, but It can adversely affect the life of the fearful person if he can't stand to be around other people's non threatening dogs. Of course dogs don't do themselves any favors by instinctively barking and snarling at strangers.

Anecdotes

Mishaps

• Christa Miller co-starred as the character Kate in The Drew Carey Show. One day, she complained about an odor in her trailer. She had checked the refrigerator, but the odor was not coming from there. Another co-star of the show, Ryan Stiles, asked whether she had checked the microwave. She had not, and when she did check the microwave, she found roast beef that had been sitting there - and rotting - for over a week.

• Homero Blancas once hit a bad shot that bounced off a palm tree and ended up in the bra of a spectator. He asked Chi Chi Rodriguez what he should do. Chi Chi replied, "I think you should play it."

Money

• Lesbian comic Rebecca Drysdale went to Sarah Lawrence College, but fell in love with comedy and show business. Also attending Sarah Lawrence was Jordan Peele, now of MADtv fame. The two ignored classes, choosing instead to spend time improvising together. Eventually, Ms. Drysdale said to Ms. Peele, "I'm going to Chicago [to Second City]. Do you want to come?" Ms. Peele was willing: "Yeah. All right. Let me just go get my hat." Ms. Drysdale does well, but occasionally - the result of pursuing a career that lacks a steady paycheck - she needs to borrow money from her parents. Of course, she has promised to pay them back - and to buy them a house in the south of France. Now, whenever she needs to borrow money, the house in the south of France gets a little bigger. When her father hands over the money, he says, "Well, that's the fountain. That's the art studio, the music room." Ms. Drysdale says, "It's turning into an extremely nice house in the south of France. But I will make good on it."

• Comedian Fred Allen was generous with handouts to moochers, and whenever he went out, he stuffed dollar bills into his pockets to give away. Of course, his reputation for generosity became well known, and moochers used to wait for him so they could cadge a dollar handout. Being human, Mr. Allen sometimes grew tired of always being hit up for cash, so when he left his NBC studio, he tried to outwit the moochers by leaving through a different door, choosing one of eight widely separated exits. But whatever way he exited the building, the moochers were waiting. Eventually, he figured out that the moochers had placed a spotter inside NBC. Mr. Allen would head toward an exit, and the spotter would rush outside and tell the moochers which exit Mr. Allen was using.

• Comedian Jackie Gleason spent lots of money even when he didn't have lots of money. He had a tab at the Villa Capri in Hollywood, where he ran up the bill until he owed the Villa Capri owner, Patsy D'Amore, $5,000 - a huge amount of money in 1950. He then left Hollywood - and his unpaid bill - for three years. When he returned, he invited some friends at dinner at the Villa Capri, where they ran up a bill of $75. Mr. Gleason then wrote a check for $6,000 and gave it to Mr. D'Amore, saying, "I'm a big tipper." In addition, Mr. Gleason once ran up so big a tab at the bar of his friend Toots Shor that he told Toots that he felt like he couldn't use his signing privilege anymore. Toots, a true friend, told him that if he didn't want to sign his own name, then he should sign Toots' name. Mr. Gleason borrowed $20 from Toots, used it to tip some servers (a big tip), then joked, "Hey, I personally am always good for a C-note [$100], but you guys all know how cheap Toots is."

'We've Seen Enough'

LA Times

One of the largest newspapers in the US has come out in favour of the impeachment of Donald Trump (R-Unfit) for his "flagrant abuse of power".

The LA Times said that the inquiry hearings had produced "overwhelming" evidence that the president had "perverted US foreign policy for his own political gain".

Mr Trump's attempt to pressure Ukraine to investigate his rival Joe Biden was "outrageous and corrosive of democracy", it added.

The editorial also argued that the president should face articles of impeachment over his obstruction of both the ongoing House inquiry and the Trump-Russia investigation by FBI special counsel Robert Mueller.

"We've seen enough," the paper's editorial board announced on Saturday. "Trump should be impeached".

Christens Father's Namesake Carrier

Caroline Kennedy

John F. Kennedy's daughter Caroline has christened a new aircraft carrier that is named after the 35th U.S. president.

Caroline Kennedy smashed a bottle across the USS John Kennedy carrier's hull Saturday at the shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. She is the sponsor of her father's namesake ship.

The ship is the second of the U.S. Navy's new Ford-Class of aircraft carriers. The first was the USS Gerald R. Ford, which was commissioned last year.

The new carriers are designed to carry and fly more planes with fewer sailors.

The Kennedy's keel was laid in 2015. The dry dock was flooded in late October.

Retains High-Profile Hollywood Lawyer

Simon Cowell

Simon Cowell is beefing up his legal team amid NBC's investigation into Gabrielle Union's complaints of a "toxic" workplace culture at America's Got Talent.

Cowell - who created the series and serves as an executive producer - retained Los Angeles-based litigator Larry Stein late last week, a source close to the matter confirmed to Deadline Saturday.

As the drama surrounding AGT continued to make headlines this week, former judges Sharon Osbourne and Howard Stern chimed in.

Stern posed a question on his SiriusXM radio show Monday about Union's firing, asking: "How is it that that freak Simon Cowell has orchestrated this?" He then charged the show and Cowell with sexist double-standards.

"He has set it up that the men stay," Stern added, "no matter how old they are, no matter how fat they are, no matter how ugly they are, no matter how talentless they are. But what he manages to do on all his shows is he constantly replaces the hot chicks with hotter chicks and younger chicks. Which is so obvious."

Ryan Reynolds Recruits

'Peloton Wife'

Ryan Reynolds unveiled a new advertisement for his brand Aviation American Gin starring "Peloton wife," whose ad for the pricy stationary bike went viral for being "sexist."

On Friday, the Deadpool actor shared his new video on Instagram featuring actress Monica Ruiz, who appeared in the controversial Peloton ad. In the one for gin, Ruiz appears in a daze with friends over cocktails. "This gin is really smooth," she says, gazing into space.

"We can get you another one, if you'd like," her friend chimes in. "You're safe here," the other friend adds.

"To new beginnings," Ruiz says, swallowing the drink, then polishing off her friend's beverage.

"You look great, by the way!" says one friend. The comment is in reference to the fictional hours Ruiz spent pedaling away on her Peloton bike in the brand's ad.

Official Documents Shed Light

'Comfort Women'

The Imperial Japanese Army asked the government to provide one "comfort woman" for every 70 soldiers, Japan's Kyodo news agency said, citing wartime government documents it had reviewed, shedding a fresh light on Tokyo's involvement in the practice.

"Comfort women" is a euphemism for the girls and women - many of them Korean - forced into prostitution at Japanese military brothels. The issue has plagued Japan's ties with South Korea for decades.

One dispatch from the consul general of Qingdao in China's Shandong province to the foreign ministry in Tokyo, says that the Imperial Army asked for one woman to accommodate every 70 soldiers, Kyodo reported late on Friday.

Another dispatch, from the consul general of Jinan, also in Shandong province, notes "at least 500 comfort women must be concentrated here" as the Japanese forces made further advances, Kyodo said.

The 1993 "Kono Statement", named after then-Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono in whose name it was issued, acknowledged Japanese authorities' involvement in coercing the women to work in the brothels.

Fossil Fuel Groups

Climate Talks

Oil and gas groups were accused Saturday of seeking to influence climate talks in Madrid by paying millions in sponsorship and sending dozens of lobbyists to delay what scientists say is a necessary and rapid cut in fossil fuel use.

A day after tens of thousands marched in the Spanish capital demanding climate action, seven environmental groups raised concerns to AFP over the role of fossil fuel representatives at the COP25 summit.

Under the 2015 Paris Agreement, nations agreed to limit global warming to "well below" two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) and as close to 1.5C as possible.

Delegates are gathered in Madrid negotiating how to implement the Paris pledges. The summit was moved at short notice after domestic unrest forced original host Chile to cancel.

Spanish energy giants Endesa and Iberdrola stepped in to sponsor the conference, which brings together more than 20,000 negotiators, scientists, NGOs and journalists from around the world.

Losing Oxygen

World's Oceans

The world's oceans are struggling to breathe, rapidly running out of oxygen at an unprecedented rate. Climate change is dangerously exacerbating the issue, scientists warned in a new study.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) released the largest report of its kind - combining the efforts of 67 scientists from 17 countries - at the global climate summit in Madrid on Saturday. It found that the oxygen level of the ocean has declined by about 2% since the 1950s, and the volume of water completely depleted of oxygen has quadrupled since the 1960s.

Sixty years ago, only 45 ocean sites suffered from low oxygen levels. That number skyrocketed to 700 in 2011. According to the study, about 50% of oxygen loss in the upper part of the ocean is a result of temperature increase.

"With this report, the scale of damage climate change is wreaking upon the ocean comes into stark focus," Dr. Grethel Aguilar, IUCN acting director general, said in a statement. "As the warming ocean loses oxygen, the delicate balance of marine life is thrown into disarray."

A combination of climate change and increased nutrient discharge will cause a 3%-4% decrease in ocean oxygen levels on average by 2100 if business continues as usual, scientists predict.

Lottery Group To Pay $1.5M More

Iowa

A national lottery group agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle a lawsuit filed by an Iowa man who claimed that a $9 million jackpot he won in 2011 would have been bigger if the previous one hadn't been fixed by an insider.

An email released Friday shows that the Multi-State Lottery Association informed its directors on Oct. 9 that it had agreed to pay Larry Dawson $1.5 million as a "full and final settlement"of his claims.

The email from the association's executive director J. Bret Toyne said that the group admitted no wrongdoing in the settlement, which was negotiated by its mediators and insurance carrier with Dawson's lawyers. It contained a confidentiality provision.

The settlement cancelled a trial that was scheduled for this month in Des Moines.

Way More Accurate

Climate Models

It's a common refrain from those who question mainstream climate science findings: The computer models scientists use to project future global warming are inaccurate and shouldn't be trusted to help policymakers decide whether to take potentially expensive steps to rein in greenhouse gas emissions.

A new study effectively snuffs out that argument by looking at how climate models published between 1970 - before such models were the supercomputer-dependent behemoths of physical equations covering glaciers, ocean pH and vegetation, as they are today - and 2007.

The study, published Wednesday in Geophysical Research Letters, finds that most of the models examined were uncannily accurate in projecting how much the world would warm in response to increasing amounts of planet-warming greenhouse gases. Such gases, chiefly the main long-lived greenhouse gas pollutant, carbon dioxide, hit record highs this year, according to a new UN report out Tuesday.

The study does fault some of the models, including one of the most famous calculations by former NASA researcher James Hansen, for overestimating warming because they assumed there would be even greater amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere than what actually occurred. These assumptions mostly involved non-CO2 greenhouse gases, such as methane.

Hansen's projection, says study lead author Zeke Hausfather, a researcher at the University of California at Berkeley, erred by about 50 percent because it did not foresee a significant drop in emissions of substances that deplete the stratospheric ozone layer.
