A recent documentary even shows how fat prejudice is keeping some doctors from understanding obesity.

"Resistance: A Woman's Journal of Struggle and Defiance in Occupied France" by Agnes Humbert: A review by Tobias Grey
A middle-aged divorcee with two grown-up children and a respectable job as an art historian, Agnes Humbert hardly fit the profile of a typical French resistance hero. Or did she?

Connie Ogle: Celebs, punks & greyhounds star in coffee-table gift books (McClatchy Newspapers)
Some books are almost like works of art. Unlike the shop-worn copies of last year's best-sellers that you sometimes borrow from the library, these are the books you want with you always, not just in your house but as near at hand as possible, in the bookcase in the hallway or stacked by your bed.

Grand Theft Auto, Twitter and Beowulf all demonstrate that stories will never die (telegraph.co.uk)
Storytelling is under assault in schools, universities and from the internet, but the power of narrative shows no sign of waning, says Sam Leith.

Betraying the student body? (guardian.co.uk)
Beauty pageants are often derided as sexist, outdated and belittling - yet top female students are flocking to take part. Emine Saner finds out why.

DREW FORTUNE: "A Mile Upstream: An Interview With Dean Ween" (popmatters.com)
The Ween guitarist uses his love of fishing to launch a new show, and he explains that being out in his boat isn't all that different from playing a show.

It has been 30 years since San Francisco Board of Supervisors member Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to hold such a high office, was shot to death by a former supervisor, Dan White. Sean Penn wants to make sure we don't forget Milk's work as an activist and his sacrifices to help open doors for gays.

The Weekly Poll

New Question

The Holiday Movie Season Edition

Are you planning to go to the cinema and see one of the new 'Holiday Season' movies?

    A. Yes! I avidly want to go see___________ with___________ (unless I go alone, that is, cuz I need some space or my partner hates what I want to see)...

    B. No! I'd rather stay home and watch holiday classic movies and/or college football bowl games on TV. Besides, I'd rather wait until the movies come out on DVD than sit in a jammed packed theater listening to people's stupid cell phone ring tones and their inane conversations (or something like that, haha)...

    C. Maybe... It depends on whether the whole 'holiday season' thing starts driving me crazy and I need to escape for a few hours, dagnabbit!... I might go see__________...(but, then again, I might just go to the bar)

'Fess up now, Poll-fans! The truth shall set you free!

Trivia Question Of The Day

There are approximately how many species of butterflies worldwide?

   A    between 1,000 and 5,000
   B    between 6,000 and 10,000
   C    between 11,000 and 14,000
   D    between 15,000 and 20,000
   E    between 21,000 and 25,000

Send your answer to Marty

Trivia Question from Yesterday

What is the sole food source of Monarch Butterfly larva?

   A    Buttercups
   B    Daisies
   C    Dandelions
  D    Milkweed
   E    Paintbrush                   Source

mj was first, and correct, with:
   Picky eaters
They dine exclusively on D, milkweed, from which their little bodies extract an alkaloid poison that makes them unpalatable to most predators. While individual monarchs may perish in the gullet of a bird, the resulting tummy upset for their assasin leaves a bad taste in its mouth and it is unlikely to ever dine on another black and orage butterfly. The similarly marked viceroy butterfly benefits from its look-a-like status and is not subject to excessive predation.

BadtotheboneBob responded:
I know! I know! It's D: milkweed... My 4th grade teacher brought a monarch caterpillar (which are beautiful in their own right) to class and we fed it milkweed until it went into chrysalis and later emerged as a Monarch. We were enthralled by the whole process and we had a little party the day we took it outside to set it free. We cheered and yelled as only a bunch of 9 year olds can, "Fly away! Fly away!", as it promptly did into the farm field next to the school... Ah, what a marvelous memory!

Alan J answered:
   D Milkweed

Jim from CA replied:
   Milkweed...

Sandra in Bangor said:
   D. milkweed they love it, and we have lots on our property here in maine.

Charlie responded:
To store up poison to fend off predators, the monarch butterfly caterpillar feeds on
  Kingdom Plantae - Plants
  Subkingdom Tracheobionta - Vascular plants
  Superdivision Spermatophyta - Seed plants
  Division Magnoliophyta - Flowering plants
  Class Magnoliopsida - Dicotyledons
  Subclass Asteridae
  Order Gentianales
  Family Asclepiadaceae - Milkweed family
  Genus Asclepias L. - milkweed
  So it's:
  D Milkweed
A science site I like to check now and then is that of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory , where the interest in promoting science to the public goes beyond physics. Indeed, they have a fine article on today's subject. Anyone suspicious of their politics because of their government funding should note that in their archives one can find things like Noam Chomsky (whose 80th birthday is Sunday), discussing "The Aftermath of September 11 ."
Funny how these questions can carry one off topic, so I'll furnish a relevant picture.

Marian the Teacher answered:
   Milkweed

Adam in NoHo said:
A quick search reveals it is D- Milkweed. I did not know that was all the larvae ate. Apparently it makes them poisonous to predators.

Chuck B replied:
Hi, sorry for not answering in a long time. I have been watching BE and it usually is the first thing I read in the morning. keep up great work.... Trivia Answer: D. Milkweed

Sally said:
I believe that the leaves of the (D) Milkweed are the sole food source of Monarch Butterfly larvae.
PS: "ducks" reminded me of the actual thorny blackberry bushes of my childhood - which I had forgotten over the years - because my berry-picking days had faded into happy memories... Thanks, ducks... (Still luv you though...) Sigh...

socdan answered:
Milkweed (are you warming us up for a Milk related contest next week???)

MAM     wrote:
The Milkweed is visited by many insects, but it has a special relationship to the Monarch butterfly. The Milkweed leaves are the sole food of the Monarch caterpillar. The very special sap of the Milkweed contains cardiac glycosides, similar to Foxglove, which make the Monarch unpalatable if not downright poisonous to predators. Birds will vomit if they ingest Monarchs full of milk.

  D Milkweed

Joe S replied:
As long as we're on the subject of food, and we have been for the past several days, I feel it is my duty to relay some vital information. I may have mentioned, in passing, my deep regard for roast turkey. Consequently I must pass on the proper way to make a left-over turkey sandwich, really, the only way to make a turkey sandwich.
Pay no attention to those cooking shows, the "famous" chefs on morning news shows, with their foreign and exotic ingredients, and spices, and "special" sauces. PAH! They are just ruining perfectly good turkey rendering it practically inedible. Let's face it, if you wanted that stuff in your turkey you would have added it when you roasted the turkey to begin with. Right? AM I RIGHT?! I mean these guys are all over the place, why do they hate turkey so much? Or do they hate America?
The secret is to keep it simple. All you need is a good quality white bread, Miracle Whip (not mayonnaise) and plenty of left over turkey. Slather the Miracle Whip on two slices of white bread, pile as much turkey on one slice of bread as it will hold and then put the other slice on top. Serve with a couple of slices of jellied cranberry sauce and cold left-over stuffing on the side (you know, if you have it. It's not required).
Oh, and the answer is D: Milkweed.

And, Paul responded:
   Milwweed of course.

Thanks to Charlie, Marianne, Chuck B, and Joe S for the pictures.
