Experience: a stranger snatched my daughter (Guardian)
'I'd explained to the girls that if someone did try to hurt them, they should shout, "I don't know you. What are you doing?" as loud as they could. But he had his hand over her mouth.'
Emma Brock: "Alec Baldwin: 'I was staring off a cliff'" (Guardian)
He had a hit with 30 Rock, then Tina Fey called time on it. His first box office smash was followed by 'eight bombs in a row'. He's fallen out with his family, his ex-wife, his colleagues, the press and Twitter (three times). Is it any wonder Alec Baldwin's new film is a dig at the movie business?

The government wants a piece of your retirement savings - at least it wants the taxes on your annual minimum required distribution. You didn't think that they would let you get away with simply passing on all your IRA money to your designated beneficiary, did you?
Petoskey Stone Lithophone (YouTube)
The only instrument of its kind in the world.... this is a lithophone made from Michigan's State Stone, the Petoskey Stone. The Petoskey stone is a fossilized colony coral from the Devonian Age... 350 million years ago it was a living organism, a hexagonaria percarinata. This single octave diatonic instrument was made by musician and edutainer, Tom Kaufmann.
The name "Ivory" refers to a series of products created by the Procter & Gamble Company (P&G), including varieties of a white and mildly scented bar soap, that became famous for its pure content and for floating in water.
Ivory's first slogan "It Floats!" was introduced in 1891. The product's other well-known slogan, "99 44/100% Pure", was based on the results of an analysis by an independent laboratory the founder's son, Harley Procter, hired to demonstrate that Ivory was purer than the castile soap then available.
Pornographic actress Marilyn Chambers once appeared on Ivory Snow packaging. The producers of the hardcore Behind the Green Door used the Ivory Snow "99 and 44/100 percent pure" slogan to advertise Chambers' presence. The controversy helped to boost tickets sales for the film.

Ivory Soap, which will definitely float, but doesn't taste

That applied to a line of products
The claim was for Ivory soap and it's derivatives Ivory Snow (powdered soap) and Ivory Flakes (do they even exist any more). A children's show I watched as a child had a recipe for making a modelling medium out of the flakey version.

Oh, that's "Ivory Soap", which, in my youth, I found to be a detestable noxious substance. Better said, I hated it. I am now, as I write this, remembering its awful smell... That, and the desiccated feel of my skin, particularly my hands. That crap sucked the moisture right out of your skin, dagnabbit!

Former US president Jimmy Carter said Saturday he was confident Nepal's long-awaited elections next week would proceed peacefully, even as an attack by anti-poll protestors the same day injured nine, including three children.
Carter, 89, is in Kathmandu to lead a 50-person team from the Atlanta-based Carter Center, who will monitor Tuesday's crucial vote, only the second such polls since a 10-year civil war launched by Maoist rebels ended in 2006.
"We have been very pleased at the preparations for the election," he told reporters in the capital.
Carter, a 2002 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, met with the hardliners during a visit to Nepal last April and asked them to renounce violence in the run-up to the polls.
The Carter Center monitored Nepal's landmark 2008 constituent assembly polls, which ended royal rule and transformed the country into a secular republic.

Journey is donating $350,000 to help relief efforts in the Philippines, and its lead singer has a message for his homeland: "Don't Stop Believin'."
Arnel Pineda and the rest of the band announced the donation on Friday. It will go to the United Nations World Food Programme, which is providing Filipinos with food assistance. The donation should provide 1.4 million meals.
In a statement, Pineda referenced the group's famous "Believin'" song and said "help is on the way."
Journey made the donation along with Live Nation Entertainment, Creative Artists Agency and their manager, John Baruck.
Pop legend Madonna has joined a chorus of international stars in urging the release of 30 Greenpeace crewmembers jailed after a protest against energy prospecting in the Arctic.
"These 30 people are in prison in Russia for staging a peaceful protest in the Arctic! Let your voice be heard. Let's bring these people home!" Madonna wrote in a message posted by Greenpeace on Twitter late Friday.
She spoke out after former Beatle Paul McCartney on Thursday published a letter to President Vladimir Putin saying he hoped the activists could be home for Christmas.
The following day, Oscar-winning French actress Marion Cotillard climbed into a cage outside the Louvre in Paris to call for the activists' release, calling their detention "absolutely absurd and crazy."

Bosses everywhere, take note: this is how to build company morale.
Yesterday, Oklahoma-based Griffin Communications, owner of Tulsa CBS and CW affiliates KOTV and KQCW as well as Oklahoma City CBS affiliate KWTV, thanked its employees for their hard work with cash.
"Today our company, Griffin Communications, decided to give every employee $500. Why? Because they own two of the top rated CBS stations in the country and business is very good. So this afternoon I am giving out $37,000 in cash to deserving employees. A day at the office doesn't get any better than that!" KOTV content director Ed Trauschke wrote on his Facebook page with an accompanying photo of five $100 bills.
"David, Kirsten and John Griffin presented each Griffin Communications employee with $500 cash (net) yesterday as a thank you for their hard work, dedication and passion over the last five years and to celebrate where the company is at this moment - doing very, very well."
Alec Baldwin's new weekly MSNBC talk show was suspended for two episodes after the actor was videotaped using an anti-gay epithet against a photographer during a New York street encounter.
The cable channel didn't specify the reason it yanked Friday night's "Up Late with Alec Baldwin" from its schedule this week and next, but the decision came the day after the Thursday run-in.
In a statement on MSNBC website, Baldwin wrote that he "did not intend to hurt or offend anyone with my choice of words, but clearly I have - and for that I am deeply sorry."
MSNBC declined further comment. Baldwin's representative said in an email Friday night that the actor would decline to comment.

A Chicago computer hacker tied to the group known as Anonymous was sentenced on Friday to 10 years in prison for cyber attacks on various government agencies and businesses, including a global intelligence company.
Jeremy Hammond, 28, was handed the maximum term for the December 2011 hacking of Strategic Forecasting Inc, an attack his lawyers contend was driven by concern about the role of private firms in gathering intelligence domestically and abroad.
Prosecutors say the hack of Strategic Forecasting, or Stratfor, resulted in the theft of 60,000 credit card numbers and records for 860,000 clients, which were then uploaded online. Hammond admitted being behind it in May.
He also admitted to hacking several law enforcement agencies and organizations, including the Arizona Department of Public Safety, releasing personal details of officers as part of an attack by the Anonymous-affiliated group LulzSec.
Hammond's lawyers argued their client should be sentenced to only time he had already served since his March 2012 arrest, portraying him as a political activist and whistleblower.
The Dutch equivalent of Santa Claus arrived in the Netherlands on Saturday to the delight of thousands of children. But some adults protested vigorously against one element of the beloved tradition they find racist: his servant in blackface makeup, Black Pete.
In the annual Dutch Sinterklaas festival, St. Nicholas arrives by steamboat in mid-November and spends a month in the country with dozens of the Petes, clown-like figures who leave cookies, chocolate and other treats for children. The affair ends in a night of gift-giving on Dec. 5.
Protesters say the Petes - servants who wear blackface makeup, red lipstick and frizzy "Afro" wigs - are blatant racist caricatures and should be banned. But in a country where 90 percent of the people have European ancestry, a large majority feels there is no racial insult intended by Black Pete. They say he's a positive figure of fun and that the dissent is a sign of political correctness gone overboard.
"The world is watching, and the Netherlands has been found wanting," anti-Pete protester Quinsy Gario told a group of about 300 supporters in Amsterdam, most of whom were black.
Gario, a black artist who has emerged as the public face of the anti-Pete movement, has been subjected to unprintable insults and death threats for speaking out against the tradition. But at Saturday's protest he had trouble at times being heard over supporters chanting his name.

An Alabama man lost his fight on Friday to keep his wife buried in the front yard of the home they shared for decades.
The remains of Patsy Davis, who died in 2009, were removed from the unusual grave in Stevenson, Alabama on Friday morning.
The grave was filled in and only the headstone remained after widower Jim Davis complied with a court ruling earlier this week and agreed to cremate his wife's remains at a local funeral home.
Davis, a 74-year-old former Marine, had vowed he would never remove his wife's body from the property. He also said the burial place was on his "piece of America" and in keeping with his wife's last wishes.
The Alabama Supreme Court had already ruled 5-3 last month that the remains of Mrs. Davis be removed from the grave. A court order issued on Wednesday, reinforcing that ruling, was just a formality.
Marijuana is legal in Denver. It's pungent odor, however, is not.
More accurately, cloying scents of all sorts are prohibited by an old odor pollution ordinance in the Mile-High City. And now that Colorado has legalized the recreational use of marijuana, Denver's Department of Environmental Health has sen an influx of complaints from residents concerned about the drug's unmistakable smell.
Enter the Nasal Ranger, a "field olfactometer" that essentially works - and looks - just like a portable version of Futurama's fictional Smell-o-Scope. Except the Nasal Ranger is a real tool used for "measuring ambient odor dilution-to-threshhold," according to the Nasal Ranger's manufacturer, St. Croix Sensory.
(Fun fact: It also goes by the slang term "scentometer.")

Gone are its glory days, when Chopin composed concertos on its pianos. France's Pleyel piano maker is shutting its doors, unable to keep up with cheaper and more agile competition.
Down to just 14 employees after a 206-year history that produced more than 250,000 pianos, the Pleyel piano factory in Saint Denis, north of Paris, announced this week that it's closing "because of recurrent losses and a very low level of activity."
Like so many industries that Europe once dominated, today the piano market has moved east, grown more democratic, and gone digital. A study by ResearchMoz says China is the world's biggest producer and consumer of pianos, many of them budget or electronic models.
The company was founded in 1807 by Ignaz Pleyel, a composer and music publisher who studied with Franz Joseph Haydn. The factory became a leader in acoustic innovation in its heyday, coming out with new models as technology advanced. Its factory made instruments for music greats Chopin, Lizst, Ravel and Stravinsky.
The skeleton of an ancient aristocratic woman whose head was warped into a deformed, pointy shape has been unearthed in a necropolis in France.
The necropolis, found in the Alsace region of France, contains 38 tombs that span more than 4,000 years, from the Stone Age to the Dark Ages.
They found that the tombs were well preserved by the limestone rock in which they were buried. One of the burials contained 20 tombs of men, women and children.
"The corpses are lying on their backs, with outstretched legs and heads turned westwards," Lefranc said.
