Emily Yoffe: Cheap Tricks
'Slate' readers share extremely clever, occasionally grim, and surprisingly inspirational tips for getting by when money runs low.

I remember marveling at the list of valedictorians when my daughter graduated four years ago from a high school where most of the students are white but about a third hail from families with roots in Asia and the Middle East. Of the 75 top scholars, probably 60 had family ties to Korea, India or Armenia. ... They were disciplined, hard-working students, whose parents supported what teachers wanted.

Marty don't quit.
PS I had a friend take a roll on pictures of me in uniform, one of which I sent and Marty published on Veterans day. (Thanks Marty) of all the photos only two remain the rest were lost over many years and many moves. The hat I was wearing appeared in only three of the pictures and the hat was purchased for the pictures. Of course the only two pictures I have feature the hat. I never wore it again except for goofing around in the barracks. It was totally impractical in my line of work.
Very early Friday morning, my computer received one of those annoying updates from Mr. Gates.
When the computer re-booted, something happened, and I was left with a black monitor and a tower that didn't sound quite right.
The monitor has been losing it's resolution for a while, but, turned out that wasn't the problem.
Spent the afternoon with the tech, and, well, it's dead. Another fried motherboard.
I'm currently using the back-up - Bill Clinton was in his first term when it was new. It's horribly slow, has a very small memory, and saves all artwork as bitmaps.
Of course, all the trivia and TV files are in the dead computer, so I'll try to cobble something together until I see what happens next.
The new motherboard will set me back $547, but I should have my old computer back by Tuesday.
OTOH, I'm starting to think maybe it's a sign to pack it in.
Sigh.

Think of them as the senior class of the "usual gang of idiots." Or the original MAD men perhaps.
There's Al Jaffee, who at 90 still draws the optical illusion fold-in gags for MAD magazine's back page. And Sergio Aragones, still whipping out eye-straining and gut-busting miniature cartoons in the magazine's margins after 48 years. And Jack Davis, who was there at the beginning, drawing the horror spoof "Hoohah!" that appeared in MAD's debut issue in 1952.
They're among the cartoonists who put MAD on the map in the 1950s. Over the next six decades, they blended celebrity caricature, pop-culture parody and political satire in a way that would influence American comedy from Saturday Night Live to The Onion and more. And some of them are still churning out gags for MAD, in defiance of the ever-expanding generation gap with the magazine's young audience.
Aragones, Jaffee and Davis were among eight veteran MAD contributors gathering Saturday for a rare reunion on the Georgia coast. With their homes and studios spread across the U.S., the artists who put their work side by side in hundreds of MAD issues don't often meet face to face.
This weekend, the cartoonists are being honored and humored by their hosts, the Savannah College of Art and Design and the National Cartoonists Society. Their art is hanging in a gallery, while their schedule includes workshops with the college's art students and a panel discussion on MAD's history and their work.

Grammy-winning jazz crooner Tony Bennett is championing a rebuilding effort to help New Orleans residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
At the site of the 101st and final house built by Project Home Again, the 85-year-old singer said Friday that bringing people home is important to protecting the culture and traditions of New Orleans.
He looked on as a gospel choir clapped and swayed while singing "Oh Happy Day" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" to commemorate the project founded by his friends, New York couple Leonard and Louise Riggio.
After seeing Katrina's devastation on their TV sets following the 2004 storm, the Riggios pledged to build homes for low- and middle-income families who were forced from their homes with little hope of returning.
CBS is bringing in some big guns for a revamp of its low-rated morning program "The Early Show" -- talk show hosts Charlie Rose and Gayle King, according to a report in Friday's New York Times.
Citing CBS staff members who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Times said Rose and King were among several new hires joining co-hosts Erica Hill and Jeff Glor in a makeover of the show, which has long trailed competing programs on NBC and ABC.
CBS, which the Times said plans to make a formal announcement on Tuesday, declined to comment on the changes which will take place early in 2012. Rose and King also both declined comment.
According to the report, the new two-hour news show will depart from the conventions of the traditional lightweight format that has prevailed in the 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. timeslot.

Sasha Grey, a 23-year-old ex-porn actress who has appeared in mainstream shows like HBO's "Entourage," was a guest earlier this month at Compton's Emerson Elementary School for Read Across America Day.
Grey tweeted Nov. 2 that she spent the day reading to students in the first and third grades.
Grey has not appeared in porn films in over two years. She has been a regular on "Entourage" and appeared in the 2009 film "The Girlfriend Experience."

Nazi-occupied Paris was a terrible place to be in the waning days of World War II, with Jews, Resistance fighters and ordinary citizens all hoping to escape. Disappearances became so common they often weren't followed up.
And one man used the lawlessness for his own terrible purposes, killing perhaps as many as 150 people.
Yet it wasn't until thick black smoke seeped into buildings in a fashionable part of the city that firefighters and police were called to an elegant townhouse where they found body parts scattered around -- setting off a manhunt that led them, eventually, to Marcel Petiot.
The crime was very much of its time, said David King, who chronicled the hunt for Petiot in "Death in the City of Light."
Petiot, as it turned out, was a respected physician who turned serial killer by night, preying largely on Jews desperate to leave Paris by luring them in with promises of escape. He was accused of murdering "only" some 27, but authorities suspected his real toll was far higher.

Five murals by Mexican artist Diego Rivera will go on display on Sunday in a new exhibit that reunites works that struck a chord across a broad social spectrum when they were unveiled during the Great Depression.
The works, which were first shown in 1931 and 1932, are the highlight of "Diego Rivera, Murals for The Museum of Modern Art," which runs through May 14.
The murals were painted at MOMA, which sold all but one. Museum director Glenn Lowry said the works, particularly "Frozen Assets," still find resonance today.
Weighing nearly 700 kg (1540 pounds), "Frozen Assets" was flown to New York after being removed from its home at the Dolores Olmedo Museum in Mexico City.
The show's other murals, "Electric Power" and "The Uprising" were also brought for the show from Rivera's native Mexico and are rejoining the U.S.-held "Agrarian Leader Zapata" and "Indian Warrior."
