Paul Krugman: Raising The Medicare Age, Revisited (New York Times)
So here's my question: will people stop talking about raising the Medicare age? My prediction is that they won't - because it wasn't really about saving money in the first place. Degrading the safety net and pushing people into more expensive private insurance weren't bugs, they were features. The usual suspects, I predict, will just keep pushing for the same thing, and dismiss the evidence.

"Stephen King has been remarkably candid in the past few years about his long foray into hard drugs and the destruction that they wreaked on his life. He'd like to have those years back. In 2010, he contributed to Joseph Galliano's Dear Me project, which invited 75 celebrities to write letters to their 16-year old selves." - John Farrier

Robert T. Gonzalez: Seriously, though - does sex count as exercise? (io9)
Somewhere near the top of every single one of the the roughly forty-kajillion internet listicles dedicated to the "surprising," "hidden," and "unexpected" health benefits of sex is the not-all-that-surprising-sounding factoid that bumping fuzzies basically doubles as exercise. In reality, however, there has been very little research done to support this claim.
Margaret Dumont (October 20, 1882 - March 6, 1965) was an American comedic actress. She is remembered mostly for being the comic foil to Groucho Marx in seven of the Marx Brothers films. Groucho called her "practically the fifth Marx brother."
She was born Daisy Juliette Baker in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of William and Harriet Anna (née Harong) Baker. As a child, she lived in the South, where she was mainly raised by her godfather, writer Joel Chandler Harris.

Elementary, my dear... One takes the middle name, Juliette (as the first name, Daisy, is so - well, abominable), shortens it and combines it with the last name of her benefactor, the good writer Harris, and one can only deduce that it could be none other than - Julie Harris! QED

Saudi women took up car keys in protest on Saturday in Riyadh, stepping behind the wheel to say they wouldn't be held down by laws that prevent women from obtaining a license.
The New York Times reported a few dozen women participated, one of whom said she drove 15 minutes to the store to pick up milk - a small chore that represents an immense act of defiance in her country. Some women who protested on Saturday posted videos of their drives.
A Saudi social activist, Hisham Fageeh, shared his support for the protest using a satirical a cappella song based on Bob Marley's hit, No Woman, No Cry, that's quickly going viral. Fageeh whistles, snaps and scratches his beard to build the melody behind his tune, No Woman, No Drive.
The song, produced with a media collective called Telfaz11, uses a mocking tone to list reasons why women shouldn't be allowed to drive.
"Say I remember when you used to sit in the family car, but backseat. Ova-ovaries all safe and well, so you can make lots and lots of babies," he sings, smiling broadly.

We all know to back up our files and photos, but what about our castles and churches?
A nonprofit named CyArk has created digital copies of more than 100 of the world's best-known monuments, mapping Roman ruins, ancient statues, and even an entire island. Now it plans 400 more, with the goal of preserving the world's most important sites against war, wear, and the impact of climate change.
Oakland, California-based CyArk works by using 3D laser scanners, radar, and a host of other technologies to create detailed maps of famous monuments - from Mt. Rushmore to the Leaning Tower of Pisa - measuring nooks and nicks with millimeter precision.
Not only do the lasers capture minute damage invisible to most cameras, the 3D data can be used to create hyper-realistic models and flyover programs used by tourists and educators.
Who would paint over a Leonardo da Vinci mural in whitewash? Let alone pile on 17 layers?
That's what happened in Italy's Sforzesco Castle. Now the work by one of history's most revered and ingenious artists is being uncovered in the Sala delle Asse (Room of Planks), as restorers peel away the paint using classic methods like scraping, and high-tech techniques and products such as ultrasound scaling, chemicals and lasers, according to the Italian wire service ANSA (Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata).
The discovered portion, which is said to depict a massive tree root in a rock, is likely at least 500 years old and part of the grand tree-filled decoration da Vinci created in the room in 1498, when he was the court artist for the Duke of Milan, Ludovico il Moro.
It's possible that the mural was left incomplete because the French conquered Milan during that time, and the castle was repurposed to house soldiers.

Condemned apartments covered in spray paint have probably never been in such demand.
An entire apartment tower in eastern Paris has been turned over to 105 street artists from around the world, giving them a chance to turn each home into its own art installation during the building's final days.
The artists had seven months to tag "Tour Paris 13" - named for the district where it's located - coating apartments sometimes still filled with debris, trash and furniture. All their work will vanish by the end of the year, as the tower, which has nine stories and a basement, is demolished piece by piece after next week.
"I really wanted the artist to intervene on a whole space," said Mehdi Ben Cheikh, the gallery owner who initiated the project. "I didn't want the spectators to come and look at art. I wanted the spectators to come and enter an art work ... which means there are things everywhere - we enter a room, and have to turn around in every direction to understand the surroundings."
Would-be visitors have lined up for up to eight hours for a one-hour visit, with signs at various points around the block estimating their wait time. Only 49 people are allowed in at one time in the apartment block, which overlooks the Seine.
An international court will hold a hearing next month on the Netherlands' bid to force Russia to release a Greenpeace protest ship and the activists who were on board.
The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, based in the German city of Hamburg, said Friday that a public hearing on the "Arctic Sunrise" case will be held on Nov. 6. A ruling is expected a few weeks later.
The 28 Greenpeace activists, a Russian photographer and a British videographer have been held since their ship, the "Arctic Sunrise," was seized by the Russian coast guard after a protest near a Gazprom-owned oil rig on Sept. 18.
The tribunal handles disputes arising from interpretation and application of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

It seemed like a dream come true -- a free holiday to Canada complete with new luggage -- until the Australian couple involved realised they had unwittingly become drug mules.
Australian Federal Police on Friday said the pair, a 72-year-old man and 64-year-old woman, told Customs officials they had some concerns about their bags when they returned to Perth International Airport on October 13.
On examination, some 3.5 kilograms (7.7 pounds) of methamphetamine was found stashed within the lining of each bag, which police reportedly believe were swapped while in Canada.
Authorities said the scam by a bogus Canada-based tour company calling itself "AusCan Tours" apparently targeted older people, offering two tickets to Canada, seven nights' accommodation and new luggage as a prize.

McDonald's Corp on Friday said it plans to end its 40-year relationship with ketchup maker H.J. Heinz Co, since that company is now led by Bernardo Hees, the former chief executive of hamburger rival Burger King Worldwide Inc.
"As a result of recent management changes at Heinz, we have decided to transition our business to other suppliers over time," McDonald's said in a statement.
The switch will be more apparent overseas than in the United States, as McDonald's only serves Heinz ketchup in two domestic markets - Pittsburgh and Minneapolis, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported on Friday.
The move from McDonald's could benefit Heinz ketchup rivals Hunt's, owned by ConAgra Foods Inc , and Del Monte.

A massive landslide in Denali National Park in Alaska rained tons of rock and soil on parts of a road that attracts scores of tourists each summer, park officials said Friday.
Crews began clearing the 200-foot stretch of Denali Park Road on Friday. It was not immediately clear if road damage or instability of the terrain would affect visitors next summer, park officials said. If it turns out that there is road damage, repairs would have to be made.
"Whether or not it would delay things would depend on the extent. It's just pretty hypothetical," park spokeswoman Kris Fister said. "We don't want to scare people at this point because we just really don't know."
For now, crews will take advantage of unseasonably mild weather conditions. They will work seven days a week for as long as possible, picking up again next spring as needed, park officials said.
The slide debris is piled in depths of up to 35 feet. Officials estimate about 30,000 yards of rock and soil fell from a point 500 feet above the road.

A watch worn by a British prisoner of war involved in "The Great Escape", the audacious World War II breakout immortalised by Hollywood, is being auctioned in England next month.
The stainless steel Rolex has a guide price of between £15,000 and £25,000, (17,500-30,000 euros, $24,000-$40,000) at the November 6 sale at Bourne End Auction Rooms, west of London.
It belonged to Royal Air Force (RAF) pilot Gerald Imeson, who was imprisoned at the Stalag Luft III camp on the German-Polish border after his plane was shot down returning from a bombing raid on Cologne in 1941.
He was involved in a now legendary plan to dig tunnels out of the camp, which was portrayed in the 1963 blockbuster film "The Great Escape" starring Steve McQueen.
Imeson was one of the "penguins", men who dispersed the soil by carrying it in their trouser pockets and scattering it around the compound as they exercised. They walked a little oddly, hence the name.
The widow of former Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito was buried in Belgrade Saturday with full state honours as the last symbol of the communist federation that broke up in the 1990s.
Once described as the most elegant first lady of the Eastern bloc, Jovanka Broz, who died of heart failure at the age of 88 on Sunday, was buried in the mausoleum House of Flowers in Belgrade, where the communist strongman was laid to rest in 1980.
Broz's last public appearance was at Tito's state funeral in May 1980, which was attended by more than 200 world leaders, including Margaret Thatcher, Saddam Hussein and Leonid Brezhnev.
After Tito's death, she was forced to leave the former Serbian royal palace where the couple lived in splendour, and spent the following years in isolation and poverty.
Her identity papers were confiscated and only returned by Serbian authorities in 2009, when she was given a pension.
Tito was 31 years her senior and the couple had no children.
Marcia Wallace, the voice of scoffing schoolteacher Edna Krabappel on "The Simpsons," whose wise-cracking characters on "The Bob Newhart Show" and other prime-time hits endeared her to generations of TV viewers, has died.
"Simpsons" executive producer Al Jean called said in a statement Saturday that her "irreplaceable character," the fourth-grade teacher who contended with Bart Simpson's constant antics, would be retired from the show. Wallace was 70.
On "The Simpsons," Wallace provided the voice for world-weary Edna Krabappel, who smoked cigarettes, made sarcastic comments and finally found love in the arms of Simpson's neighbor Ned Flanders after fans voted online at the end of season 22 to keep the unlikely couple together.
Wallace's trademark "Ha!" punctuated Krabappel's frequent wisecracks, and her character was also known for the catchphrase, "Do what I mean, not what I say."
Harry Shearer, the voice of Ned Flanders on the show, said Wallace "brought this huge, positive energy" to her work on "The Simpsons."
The BBC, citing Bird's agent, said Saturday the director had been suffering from anaplastic thyroid cancer and had died in her sleep.
Bird worked for several years at the Royal Court Theater before switching to TV in the mid-1980s. She racked up a string of credits on shows such as "Casuality" and "EastEnders."
"Priest," Bird's 1994 debut feature about a traditional Catholic who begins questioning the church's values, won awards at the Toronto, Berlin and Edinburgh film festivals.
