'COUNTING ON DEMOCRACY'
from tim h
In the face of the controversial decision by the PBS network to refuse to
transmit the investigative report, the nation's top PBS stations will independently
broadcast COUNTING ON DEMOCRACY.
Directed by Emmy-award winner Danny Schechter, the 57-minute
documentary follows BBC television reporter Greg Palast as he discovers how Katherine
Harris removed up to 57,000 legal voters from registries - mostly black - five months before
the 2000 election. While the public broadcast network chiefs refused to schedule
this important report, dozens of local stations are insisting on showing the expose
before the mid-term elections.

Last Night
Penn State lost, and so did the Giants. Woke up with the kid's cold, too.
The kid was delighted with the bike, and the rest of the birthday festivities. Only disappointment was none of his grandparents bothered to call.
Usually, the night the clocks get set back is one of my favorites - love that extra nighttime hour! But, this year, my throat hurts & my eyes feel pickled. My nose is stuffed up and I'm cranky as hell, too.
Tonight, Sunday, as is tradition, CBS opens the night with '60 Minutes', and then follows with a fresh 'Becker', then a fresh 'Bram & Alice', and caps the night with a RERUN of the movie 'Double Jeopardy'.
NBC starts the night with a RERUN 'American Dreams' and follow it was a fresh 'American Dreams'. Next, a fresh 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent' and a fresh 'Boomtown'.
ABC begins the night with a RERUN of the movie 'A Bug's Life' then offers a fresh 'Alias' and a fresh 'The Practice'.
The WB has its weekly RERUN of the 'Gilmore Girls', then a RERUN of 'Charmed' followed by a fresh 'Angel'.
Faux has the final game of the World Series then a RERUN of last year's 'Simpsons Treehouse Of Horror XII', followed by the RERUN of the movie 'Die Hard'.
UPN starts the night with 'Buffy', then the weekly RERUN of 'Enterprise' and caps the night with 'Stargate SG-1'.
Weekly rerun of 'The Osbournes' on MTV.

Sequel For 'The Candidate'?
Robert Redford
Robert Redford may reprise his role as idealistic California politician Bill McKay in a sequel to 1972's "The Candidate."
Redford, 65, and screenwriter Larry Gelbart, best known for his work on the TV series "M.A.S.H.," are developing a script, the trade newspaper Variety said Thursday.
The report said Redford would also likely produce and direct the sequel.

by renewing their vows - has been forced to sign a confidentiality agreement. New York magazine reports the two-plus-page document forbids talking about the family in any
way that "may harm, disparage, demean, or reflect negatively or poorly upon or cause injury to the reputation, character or career of any of the Osbourne parties."

Love Letters to Be Auctioned
Frida Kahlo
The love letters of Frida Kahlo, the controversial Mexican artist whose tormented life is the subject of a new movie, will be sold by Sotheby's in December, the auction house said on Friday.
Kahlo, a celebrated surrealist painter and political activist, was married to famed Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, to whom most of the 36 intimate letters, documents and notes included in the archive were written.
Kahlo, who died in 1954 at the age of 47, is the subject of a new film, "Frida," that was released on Friday and delves into the complicated love life of the artist, who had affairs with her husband's
mistresses and others, including Soviet political exile Leon Trotsky.
The archive, dating from 1938-1953 and detailing her love for Rivera, need for her art and political activism, is being offered as one lot on Dec. 13 and is expected to sell for $200,000 to $300,000, Sotheby's said.

Ex-Sony Head On Ryder's Jury
Peter Guber
A jury made up of several members of the entertainment industry, including former Sony Entertainment Pictures Chairman Peter Guber, was sworn in Friday to judge actress Winona Ryder
on shoplifting charges.
Lawyers on both sides accepted the eight-woman, four-man panel after questioning whether their occupations might prevent them from being fair.
Defense attorney Mark Geragos asked the them whether the fact Ryder is "pretty and rich" would prejudice her in their eyes. No one answered affirmatively.
Addressing the former Sony executive, he said: "Mr. Guber, you're not afraid of working in this town again if you get on this case, are you?"
There was laughter in the courtroom as Guber answered, "No."
Other jurors included a legal secretary who works at Sony Studios, a man who is involved in program development for television and a doctor the judge said he knew from the local Rotary Club.

Promotes Measure 27 In OR
Paul McCartney
Paul McCartney has endorsed a ballot measure in Oregon that would require labeling of genetically modified foods.
McCartney's 30-second radio ad in support of Measure 27, which would require all foods made with or derived from genetically modified ingredients to be labeled as such, began airing Thursday.
McCartney, who's a vegetarian, heard about the ballot measure when he was in Portland for a recent concert.
He contacted Mel Bankoff, founder of organic food maker Emerald Valley Kitchens, who said McCartney's endorsement would help the campaign.

Name Changed
'Swept Away'
Lina Wertmuller was said to be appalled when she found out that the lead character of her 1970s movie classic, "Swept Away," had her name changed in the disastrous Guy Ritchie/Madonna version.
The rich bitch played by Madonna - Raffaella Pavone Lanzetti in the original - is named Amber Leighton in the remake.
MSNBC's Jeannette Walls muses: "Why, you may ask, is it so weird that the shrewish Amber Leighton gets smacked and humiliated and nearly raped in Guy Ritchie's little vanity project? Well, it
just so happens that Guy Ritchie's mother is named Amber Leighton." That's a little too creepy for us.

Prince of Asturias Prizes
Arthur Miller Honored
American film director Woody Allen and playwright Arthur Miller on Friday received two of the eight Prince of Asturias Prizes — the Spanish-speaking world's version of the Nobel prize.
Miller was recognized as one of the great dramatists of the 20th century. In his speech he remembered with tears in his eyes his late wife, Inge Morath, an Austrian-born photographer
with whom he said he discovered Spain in the 1930s.
The jury praised him for his independence of spirit and remarkable critical sense honoring a body of work that has spanned more than half a century and
includes "Death of a Salesman" and "The Crucible."
All the winners received the prize from the heir to the Spanish throne, Prince Felipe, in the Campoamor Theater of Oviedo, in northern Spain. Asturian
bagpipes added a touch of local atmosphere.
The annual prizes include a cash award of $47,080 and a sculpture by Spanish artist Joan Miro.
Palestinian writer Edward Said and Israeli-Argentinian pianist Daniel Baremboim shared the Concord award for their efforts in favor of peace.

Focuses on Words
Art Garfunkel
Art Garfunkel freely admits that Paul Simon was the one with the words during their long musical partnership.
Now, the 60-year-old performer is trying to break out of that image as he makes his songwriting debut on his new album, "Everything Waits to Be Noticed."
"We have an image of ourselves, and we carry ourselves all through life with some rough sense of ourselves," Garfunkel told the Daily News of Los Angeles.
"I've shifted my way to respecting words, respecting what comes out of my mouth, having a little more sobriety in my expression of things."

Gets His IPO - At A Price
Steve Wynn
With his latest mega-project on the line, casino mogul Steve Wynn pulled out all the stops on Friday to complete the $450 million IPO of casino company Wynn Resorts Ltd.
Wynn and his business partner, Kazuo Okada, made an eleventh-hour reduction to the offer price before the market opened Friday, selling shares at a 40 percent discount to what
was originally planned. More remarkably, the two partners personally ponied up $176 million, acquiring more than a third of the deal themselves.
In a tumultuous week, the company delayed the sale by two days and cut the offer price three times. Its debut on the Nasdaq stock market was less dramatic, with the shares closing
at $13.01, a penny over the offer price.
Wynn's commitment to getting the deal done reflects the importance of the IPO in plans to finance the $2.4 billion casino, to be called Le Reve. By investing their own money,
Wynn and Okada were able to keep the proceeds at $250 million despite the lower share price.
Le Reve, to be developed on the site of the old Desert Inn casino, is French for "The Dream." It will include 5 million square feet of space, making it larger than The Mirage
but smaller than Bellagio, two resorts Wynn's company Mirage Resorts created before being sold to MGM -- now MGM Mirage -- for $6.4 billion in 2000.
Le Reve will have a 45-story hotel tower, a three-acre lake, a Ferrari dealership, and an 18-hole golf course.

Now To Debut In January
'Life With Liza and David'
VH1 hasn't canceled "Life With Liza and David" yet, but it's close. Taping was delayed by a month due to Liza Minnelli and her svengali hubby, David Gest, "rehearsing" their
parts, and Gest has driven producers crazy with his micromanaging of every detail and his exorbitant demands. "VH1 has issued a third warning to David Gest to back off and let
others do their jobs," said one insider. The show, originally set to debut Dec. 8, will now bow in early January, if Gest can toe the line and producers resolve the "budget
issues." "Liza and David are doing all these dinners and have demanded the best of everything - china, silver, whatever. They are spending too much." Liza is spending on stylist
Tina Knowles, the mother of Destiny's Child diva Beyonce Knowles. "They really hit it off over lunch a while back, and discovered they shared the same taste in clothes," says a
pal of Tina. Knowles just co-authored a book with Zoe Alexander, "Destiny's Style: Bootylicious Fashion, Beauty and Lifestyle Secrets of Destiny's Style".

Holds Auditions In Detroit
'American Idol'
All of the ingredients that made "American Idol" this summer's television sensation appear to be in place for next year's second installment.
Acid-tongued British record producer Simon Cowell is back as a judge, as are singer-dancer Paula Abdul and industry veteran Randy Jackson. Los Angeles-based radio disc
jockey Ryan Seacrest will return as host.
However, a few tweaks became known Friday as the three judges and Seacrest took time out from judging talent in Detroit. Auditions started Monday. Detroit was the first of seven
cities where auditions are being held.
Original co-host Brian Dunkleman won't be back, Seacrest said. And the show's producers have added a fourth judge, rapper and radio personality Angie Martinez.
Cowell didn't mince words when asked about the auditions he'd seen in Detroit.
Jackson also wasn't very kind about Detroit's offerings.

Claims 'Bush Junta' Complicit In 9/11
Gore Vidal
America's most controversial writer Gore Vidal has launched the most scathing attack to date on George W Bush's Presidency, calling for an investigation into the events of 9/11 to discover whether the Bush
administration deliberately chose not to act on warnings of Al-Qaeda's plans.
Vidal's highly controversial 7000 word polemic titled 'The Enemy Within' - published in the print edition of The Observer today - argues that what he calls a 'Bush junta' used the terrorist attacks as a pretext
to enact a pre-existing agenda to invade Afghanistan and crack down on civil liberties at home.
Vidal writes: 'We still don't know by whom we were struck that infamous Tuesday, or for what true purpose. But it is fairly plain to many civil libertarians that 9/11 put paid not only to much of our fragile
Bill of Rights but also to our once-envied system of government which had taken a mortal blow the previous year when the Supreme Court did a little dance in 5/4 time and replaced a popularly elected President
with the oil and gas Bush-Cheney junta.'
Vidal argues that the real motive for the Afghanistan war was to control the gateway to Eurasia and Central Asia's energy riches. He quotes extensively from a 1997 analysis of the region by Zgibniew Brzezinski,
formerly national security adviser to President Carter, in support of this theory. But, Vidal argues, US administrations, both Democrat and Republican, were aware that the American public would resist any war in
Afghanistan without a truly massive and widely perceived external threat.
