'Sniper Caps' & The NHL
The sale of NHL team hats known as "sniper caps" soon will be stopped because of the deadly shootings in the Washington, D.C., area, the league said.
In hockey lingo, a "sniper" refers to a team's top scorer. But with a real-life killer sniper on the loose around Washington, one item in the NHL's official
online store was causing some people to gasp Thursday.
The Web site listed for sale a Washington Capitals "Navy Sniper Fitted Cap." There was one sniper cap or another for each of the 30 teams in the league.

Last Night
Another cool, mostly overcast day. Now that there's a damn new roof on the damn house, I wish it would rain!
Toeser, the 6-toed black cat, had her liberty restricted today - as it will be til after Halloween. Something about this season that brings out the worst in some people, so far as cats are concerned. Boo. Hiss.
Still getting a few tomatoes from the garden! The lettuce is a fond memory, while the horseradish is spreading.
Getting ready for the kid's 10th birthday on Saturday. He's been dropping 'small' hints about the 'Simpsons - Year 2' DVD. He's most specific that it be 'Year 2'. Seems that 'Year 1' didn't have a
Halloween special...little does he know that the DVD of his dreams is under a stack of towels in the linen closet. He wants to go out to a 'real
restaurant', too. That's my boy!
Go Giants!
Tonight, Sunday, as is tradition, CBS starts the night with '60 Minutes', then follows with a fresh 'Becker', a fresh 'Bram & Alice', and caps it off with the fresh tv-movie 'Dancing At The Harvest Moon'.
NBC starts with 'Dateline', then a fresh 'American Dreams', a fresh 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent', and a fresh 'Boomtown'.
ABC opens with the movie 'Liar Liar', then a fresh 'Alias', and a fresh 'The Practice'.
The WB the weekly rerun of 'Gilmore Girls', then a fresh 'Charmed' and a fresh 'Angel'.
Faux has game 2 of the World Series, and will probably fill prime time with reruns of 'X-Files', 'King Of The Hill' and the 'Simpsons'.
UPN begins with 'Buffy', then the weekly rerun of 'Enterprise' followed by an episode of 'Stargate SG-1'.
Weekly rerun of 'The Osbournes' on MTV at 10:30 pm (edt/pdt)
TCM has Theatre of Blood (1973), which stars
Vincent Price as Edward Lionheart, and
Diana Rigg as his daughter, Edwina Lionheart.

'COUNTING ON DEMOCRACY'
from tim h
In the face of the controversial decision by the PBS network to refuse to
transmit the investigative report, the nation's top PBS stations will independently
broadcast COUNTING ON DEMOCRACY.
Directed by Emmy-award winner Danny Schechter, the 57-minute
documentary follows BBC television reporter Greg Palast as he discovers how Katherine
Harris removed up to 57,000 legal voters from registries - mostly black - five months before
the 2000 election. While the public broadcast network chiefs refused to schedule
this important report, dozens of local stations are insisting on showing the expose
before the mid-term elections.

Another California World Series Quake?
Quirks Predict
The prognosticators are at war over whether a full moon on Monday will produce California's next big earthquake.
Among the signs that it will: the San Francisco Giants are in another all-California World Series. Among the signs that it won't: not enough cats have run away.
Thirteen years after a 6.9 magnitude tremor shook San Francisco, causing much damage and the postponement of the third game of the 1989 World Series -- the last to feature two California
teams -- some earthquake predictors say conditions are ripe for another Fall Classic shaker.
In "Predicting the Next Great Quake," written in 1996, author David Nabhan published an earthquake almanac for Southern California that pinpointed Monday as a likely earthquake day because
of a lining up of the moon, sun and Earth, known as "syzygy" (SISS-a-gee).
Although seismologists at the U.S. Geological Survey said predicting large and destructive earthquakes is impossible, Nabhan and others subscribe to the theory that most large earthquakes
happen during full moon or new moon syzygies.

Tiger Woods' Agent
Tiger Woods' agent says the six billboards across Michigan featuring the golfer's likeness and calling for the passage of a state ballot proposal are out of bounds.
Mark Steinberg of the IMG agency said that neither he nor Woods gave permission to use the golfer's likeness.
"The most disappointing thing is that a political position is stated and that's just wrong, so outrageously wrong," Steinberg is quoted as saying in a Detroit Free Press story published Saturday.
The billboards — located in Lansing, Grand Rapids, Battle Creek, Flint, Kalamazoo and Detroit — feature a drawing of a golf-club-toting Woods with the words "water hazard" in red. They show Woods
spitting out murky, brown Michigan water and saying he doesn't feel "up to par."

About 500 fans cheered when the star was unveiled in front of Ivar Nightclub. Band members Brian May and Roger Taylor attended the ceremony.
American fans of the 1970s British group had mounted a campaign to get the star for May, Taylor, John Deacon and lead vocalist Freddie Mercury, who died of AIDS in 1991.

Visited Natchitoches, La
Oprah
Oprah Winfrey took a fan up on her offer and made a surprise visit to Louisiana's oldest town.
Peggy Plunkett was in the audience at a taping of The Oprah Winfrey Show two weeks ago when she stood up and said: "Oprah, everybody in Natchitoches loves you. You should
come and visit," according to Winfrey.
Winfrey arrived unannounced Friday afternoon. She had lunch at a local restaurant, joined Northwestern State University's homecoming parade and spoke at a pep rally for the school's sports program.
A segment on her visit will air soon on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

New Accountant to Review
Disney-Pooh Royalty Case
A Los Angeles judge has called in an accountant to review a court battle over a honey pot of royalties from the whimsical children's story, Winnie the Pooh, that Walt Disney Co says could cost it $200 million.
In a case which stretches back more than a decade, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ernest Hiroshige on Friday put on hold a ruling requiring Disney to pay royalties to a company that owns some rights to Winnie the Pooh, the honey-loving bear created by British writer A.A. Milne in the 1920s.
Hiroshige said he would ask an independent accountant to consider the matter and to review an earlier report which found Disney owed only a few thousand dollars, as well as the judge's own tentative ruling in June that Disney has said could cost it $200 million.
The case is one of two in which privately held Stephen Slesinger Inc charges that Disney has hidden royalties owed under a deal the two sides struck years ago.
Slesinger, which bought rights to Winnie the Pooh from the late author, A.A. Milne, said the entertainment giant was not off the hook.

Ten Greatest Britons
Winston Churchill, Princess Diana and John Lennon made it -- but Tony Blair, Queen Elizabeth II, and Paul McCartney failed to register in the list of top 10 Britons
of all time, the BBC said Saturday.
The 10, selected from a BBC phone and Internet poll involving more than 30,000 Britons, hail from the 16th century to the modern day and include scientists, royals and military figures.
The top ten were:
Queen Elizabeth I, whose reign had a significant impact on economic, social, religious and political life in England;
Winston Churchill, Britain's prime minister during World War II.
Naturalist Charles Darwin, famous for his theory on evolution put forward in his book "The Origin of Species."
Naval hero Horatio Nelson, who led the British fleet to victory over the larger joint fleets of Spain and France at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. This decisive victory led to the erection of Nelson's column and the creation of Trafalgar Square in central London.
Oliver Cromwell, a prime mover in the execution of King Charles I and later Lord Protector during the short British republic in the seventeenth century.
Isaac Newton, whose work in mathematics and physics laid the foundation for modern science.
Dramatist and poet William Shakespeare.
Engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who designed the Clifton Bridge in Bristol, western England.
Princess Diana, hailed for her charity work but best known for her failed marriage to heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles.
John Lennon, singer and songwriter for the legendary pop band, the Beatles.

Rises Again After 1,600 Years
Bibliotheca Alexandrina
Egypt officially reopened one of the first and most celebrated centers of learning in human history this week -- the library of Alexandria whose ancient roots stretch back more than 2,000 years.
Officially called the "Bibliotheca Alexandrina," the resurrected library reflects all the ambition of a bold 20-year project costing $200 million with backing from the U.N. cultural body UNESCO and numerous countries.
The 11-story edifice -- on the spot where scholars believe the ancient library stood before it was destroyed -- emerges from the ground as a giant disc tilting 20 degrees north toward the Mediterranean and forming a striking
image when directly aligned with the sun.
Its southern-facing, windowless wall of granite carries engraved letters of most of the world's alphabets, a silent pledge to promote diversity, culture and unfettered learning.

Reported Prowler to Police
Calista Flockhart
"Ally McBeal" star Calista Flockhart called police last week to report a prowler calling her name outside Harrison Ford's home, authorities said.
Los Angeles police responded to the home in the Brentwood area west of downtown but were unable to find anyone, Officer Jason Lee, a police spokesman, said Friday.
A spokesman for Flockhart didn't return a call Friday, but Ford's manager, Pat McQueeney, said the report turned out to be "nothing." Flockhart and Ford have been dating.

Disney Parks
Facing skittish tourists, a weak economy and investors calling for deep changes at Walt Disney Co., the new head of the company's hard-hit theme parks division is placing his faith
in the tried and trusted Disney magic.
Drafted from Paris, where he headed Euro Disney since 2000, Jay Rasulo, 46, was appointed parks chief of Walt Disney Co. on September 29 after the former head unexpectedly left Disney
to become chief executive of retailer Gap Inc.
Weak financial performance in recent quarters has led some Disney investors to press for change. The company's board has responded by adopting stronger corporate governance measures and
backing a plan to revive growth.
Rasulo said Disney should focus on the long run for its 10 theme parks in the United States, France and Japan. Together the parks employ some 90,000 "cast members," as Disney calls its employees.

Charged with Sexual Assault
Kirby Puckett
Former Minnesota Twins star and Baseball Hall of Fame member Kirby Puckett was charged on Friday with forcing a woman into a men's restroom and then fondling her.
Puckett, 42, is accused of grabbing the unidentified woman in the hallway at a restaurant in Eden Prairie near Minneapolis on the evening of Sept. 6. She called
police at the time but the charges were not filed until Friday following an investigation.
Puckett was charged with one felony, false imprisonment, and with one misdemeanor, fifth degree criminal sexual conduct, the Hennepin County Attorney's office said.
The former is punishable by up to three years in prison while the latter can result in up to a year in prison, as well as fines in both cases, it said.
