I don't know if you have heard the term "Nice Guy." Ironically, it does not actually refer to any nice guy. It refers to a sort of Internet phenomenon of a guy who complains about how girls won't date him and prefer jerks, and therefore all women are bad and shallow and are too dumb to know who's good for them. Such guys existed before the internet, but their inescapable public complaining is the part made possible by the miracle of technology.

BartCop
Hello Bartcop fans,
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to
active@bartcop.com.
Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is
overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received.
Anyone wanting to make a donation can click on this the yellow donate
button on bartcop.com
But - I need you all to help keep this going. This note
isn't going to directly reach all of Bart's fans. So if you can repost
it on blogs and discussion boards so people can sign up then when we
figure out what's next we can let more people know. This list is just
over 600 but like to get it up to at least 10,000 pretty quick. So
here's the signup link for this email list.

L.A. Film Critics to Honor
Gena Rowlands
The Los Angeles Film Critics Assn. will present Gena Rowlands with its career achievement award, the group announced on Saturday.
An 84-year-old veteran of film, TV and theater, Rowlands is particularly celebrated for helping to usher in a bold new commitment to realism in American screen acting in the 1960s and '70s, never more so than in her grittily layered, emotionally fearless performances for the writer-director John Cassavetes. Their 10-picture collaboration, which included such films as "Shadows" (1959) and "Faces" (1968), earned Rowlands two Oscar nominations for best actress, in "A Woman Under the Influence" (1975) and "Gloria" (1981).
Cassavetes received the L.A. critics' career achievement award in 1986, making him and Rowlands the first husband-and-wife duo to be so honored in the group's nearly 40-year history.
The group also voted to honor longtime member and past president Leonard Maltin with a special citation in recognition of his 40-year career as a film critic and historian. It's not the first time LAFCA has celebrated one of its own; past honorees include Charles Champlin and Kevin Thomas.

Kids' Libraries
China
When she got off school last Thursday, Huang Qiufeng, the high spirited 12-year old daughter of migrant workers, dropped by the local library in this scruffy village on the outskirts of Beijing, as she does from time to time.
She found it closed, replaced by a convenience store. The brightly painted letters on the wall spelling out "BOOK" were obscured by shelves full of instant noodles.
"The people here were very nice and I really liked the library," Qiufeng said. "But now it's gone."
And so had ten other children's libraries across China run by Li Ren, an educational charity. The libraries are among the victims of a sweeping orthodoxy laid down by President Xi Jinping, who continues to consolidate his power. While crackdowns on budding expression here come and go, the new variant is spreading its net more widely, ensnaring even prominent moderate voices.
In recent weeks and months, scholars have seen their books banned after they voiced sympathy for pro-democracy demonstrators in Hong Kong; artists with independent ideas have been silenced; lawyers representing political prisoners have been locked up; and human rights campaigners and civil society activists have been detained by the hundreds.

The Lego Version
'The Hobbit'
Even if, like me, you have a love for all things Middle-earth, it's easy to say that Peter Jackson has probably gone overboard with his trilogy of films based on The Hobbit. (My point of view? Two films would have been plenty, and they don't need to be as long as they are, but I'm still happy to overindulge and spend more time in his gorgeous version of Middle-earth).
However, if you just don't have the attention span for more than eight hours of Hobbit movies, the YouTube stop-motion artists Brotherhood Workshop have condensed the story of The Hobbit down into 72 tight seconds (it is a kid's book, after all) and animated it using Lego's Hobbit-themed minifigs and sets. The results are simultaneously hilarious but also quite fun for Middle-earth fans - the whole thing feels like it could easily have been produced by Lego itself. It's also quite reminiscent of the surprisingly charming world of the Lego: The Hobbit video game. But if you're new to the story of The Hobbit and plan on reading the books and / or watching the films, we'd recommend not watching this clip - as tongue-in-cheek as it is, it does give away one of the main climactic points of the book.
As for the many extra stories that Jackson embellished or created to pad out his trilogy, Hobbit purists will be satisfied with this presentation - it sticks right to the plot of the book, with no details on what Gandalf is up to when he keeps splitting off from Bilbo and his company of dwarves. If you need the full, over-the-top, Peter Jackson treatment, the final film in his Hobbit trilogy opens on December 17th.

Giant Trout
A Halifax scientist is back from the Arctic with groundbreaking research - giant trout with giant implications for conservation in the north.
Steve Campana and his team from the Bedford Institute of Oceanography spent part of the summer in Victoria Island mapping northern lakes and trying to figure out what is in them.
"The biggest lake trout we caught was 1.2 metres and weighed about 35 pounds [16 kilograms]," said Campana. "It was a nice trout."
The scientific team was only able to sample a small number of the 500,000 lakes in the region.

Copyright Infringement Lawsuit Dismissed
'New Girl'
The copy infringement lawsuit claiming that Fox comedy "New Girl" was ripped off from two unknown writers was dismissed by a judge, but the plaintiffs can refile and amend their complaint.
According to legal documents filed in the U.S. District Court of Central California obtained by TheWrap on Friday, Judge Stephen Wilson described writers Stephanie Counts and Shari Gould's complaint against Fox, William Morris Endeavor, show runner Elizabeth Meriwether and executive producer Peter Chernin as "ambiguous."
In the initial lawsuit filed in January, Counts and Gold said their script, at the time a feature screenplay called "Square One," was passed to Meriwether and former Fox chief Peter Chernin's Chernin Entertainment, both of whom were represented by William Morris Endeavor. The writers allegedly worked with WME and an independent producer from 2006 to 2010 before the relationships broke down.
Then, in February 2011, the lawsuit says the plaintiffs heard about the pilot for the Zooey Deschanel sitcom, which, like their script, featured a quirky girl who had just gone through a bad breakup and moved in with three men. The lawsuit details dozens of other specific similarities between the "Square One" script and the pilot for "New Girl."

Wants Wider Wiretap Powers
FBI
FBI chief James Comey renewed a call Thursday for broader authority to tap into emerging technologies, saying the Edward Snowden revelations have led to unwarranted mistrust of law enforcement.
Comey said revelations about widespread surveillance have led to a climate which could hinder the ability to catch criminals and terrorists, underscored by new efforts to encrypt smartphones to make them inaccessible to investigators, even with a warrant.
Comey's comments sought to renew the debate about the FBI "going dark," or being unable to access encrypted calls and messages from new apps and services which fall outside the traditional realm of "wiretaps."
The FBI had been calling for changes to the US law covering wiretapping in 2013, but that debate was shelved after the revelations from former NSA contractor Snowden in June last year about vast surveillance of telephone and online communications.

Decayed Buildings
Indian Schools
Federally owned schools for Native Americans on reservations are marked by remoteness, extreme poverty and a lack of construction dollars. They also are among the nation's lowest performing.
The Obama administration is pushing ahead with an improvement plan that gives tribes more control. But the effort is complicated by the disrepair of so many buildings, not to mention the federal legacy of forcing American Indian children from their homes to attend boarding schools.
Consider Little Singer Community School, with 81 students on a remote desert outpost. The vision for the school came in the 1970s from a medicine man who wanted area children to attend school locally. Here's the reality today: a cluster of rundown classroom buildings containing asbestos, radon, mice and mold.
Students often come from families struggling with domestic violence, alcoholism and a lack of running water at home, so nurturing is emphasized. The school provides showers, along with shampoo and washing machines
Teachers have no housing, so they commute together about 90 minutes each morning on barely passable dirt roads.

Search For Suspected Submarine Intensifies
Sweden
The Swedish armed forces stepped up a military operation off the coast of Stockholm on Saturday where they were investigating a report of "foreign underwater activity".
More than 200 men, Swedish stealth ships, minesweepers and helicopters have been searching an area of the Baltic Sea about 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of the Swedish capital since Friday evening, following a tip-off from what the military called a "credible source".
"I have decided to increase the number of units in the area -- units with specialised sensors," Commander Jonas Wikstroem told reporters at a press conference in Stockholm.
"We still judge that the information we received yesterday was very trustworthy," he added, but declined to comment on what the military had discovered after more than 24 hours sweeping the sea around islands in Stockholm's archipelago.
Swedish defence analysts cited by local media speculated that a foreign submarine may have been in the area to replace old spy equipment or to monitor a Swedish naval exercise.

In Memory
Paul Craft
Nashville songwriter and Hall of Famer Paul Craft has died in Tennessee at the age of 76.
The Tennessean reported that Craft died Saturday at a Nashville hospital "after years of deteriorating health."
Craft penned the words to songs made famous by the likes of Ray Stevens, Mark Chestnutt, Alison Krauss, the Eagles and Linda Rondstadt.
He was inducted earlier this month into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame after being nominated numerous times over the years.
The newspaper said Craft was also a member of American Mensa, a group for people whose IQ is in the top 2 per cent of the population.
Among his most well-known songs were "Hank Williams, You Wrote My Life," ''Dropkick Me, Jesus (Through the Goalposts of Life)," ''Brother Jukebox," and "It's Me Again, Margaret," one of Stevens' signature songs.
