Anecdotes

Education

• Before her death in 2003, mystery writer Joan Lowery Nixon was constantly plotting and writing books. During a meal at a restaurant, she and her daughter discussed the best way to kill someone without causing bleeding. They considered the merits and demerits of poison and strangulation, and a man got up from a table near them and started talking to a waitress. The man did not return to finish his meal, and the waitress thereafter kept a close watch on Ms. Nixon and her daughter.

• As a reporter, H. Allen Smith met many of the rich and famous. Once he went to a dinner with the writer H.G. Wells, and he sat very close to him so he could hear the great man’s every word. However, the only thing Mr. Wells talked about during dinner was that he didn’t like green peas, and he couldn’t ever remember having liked green peas, and when he died he would still not like green peas.

Games

• When they were children, young people’s author William Sleator and Vicky, his sister, sometimes amused themselves during car trips by pretending that they were BMs (bowel movements). Vicky imagined that she was an Oreo cookie that had been eaten by Queen Elizabeth and she described the process of being transformed from an Oreo cookie into a BM and finally being flushed down a toilet in the queen’s marble bathroom. William described two items being eaten at the same time — blueberries and carrots — resulting in a purple-and-orange-striped BM. Vicky used to point out that striped BMs do not exist, but William replied that just because she had never seen one that did not mean that they didn’t exist.

• A game that Alistair Cooke and his friends played was trying to tell a person’s occupation by looking at their photograph. One friend would cut photographs of people who were not famous from newspapers and magazines. Each photograph was pasted on a piece of paper, and the game players were also given a sheet of paper that listed the occupations of the people in the photographs. As it happened, no one was very good at matching face and occupation — high scores were 20 or 25 percent accuracy. Most of the players felt certain that a person in one photograph was a murderer — he turned out to be a judge.

Gays and Lesbians

• Michael Musto is a gay gossip columnist with the Village Voice, and he has many straight fans. Unfortunately, when his straight fans write him an email, they feel compelled to write things like “I love your column, but I’m straight!” This amuses Mr. Musto. He says, “I can’t believe people are so insecure that they feel they have to spell out their supposed sexuality just so I know they’re not ‘one of them’ just for liking me. Relax, people. After all, I enjoyed The Color Purple, but I don’t have to tell people, ‘But I’m white!’”

• Among the dumb beliefs many people have held about gays and lesbians (about as dumb as the belief in the secret handshake) is that gays and lesbians wear green on Thursdays, aka Fairy Day. In the 1960s, this belief amused Nancy Garden, the future author of the lesbian love story Annie on My Mind (it has a happy ending!). She wore green every day she attended school because her school uniform was green.

• The gaydar that gays and lesbians use to find other gays and lesbians sometimes doesn’t work. When gay poet Allen Ginsburg met punk poet Patti Smith, he thought she was a very cute boy, he was attracted to her, and he wanted to sleep with her. However, Patti was aware of Allen’s sexual preferences, so she told him, “Look at the tits, Allen! Look at the tits!”

Trivia Question from Yesterday

Which US state accounts for 99% of the nation's production of hazelnuts?

       Oregon                                                      Source

The hazelnut is the nut of the hazel and therefore includes any of the nuts deriving from species of the genus Corylus, especially the nuts of the species Corylus avellana. It also is known as cobnut or filbert nut according to species. A cob is roughly spherical to oval, about 15–25 mm (5/8–1 in) long and 10–15 mm (3/8–5/8 in) in diameter, with an outer fibrous husk surrounding a smooth shell and a filbert is more elongated, being about twice as long as its diameter. The nut falls out of the husk when ripe, about seven to eight months after pollination. The kernel of the seed is edible and used raw or roasted, or ground into a paste. The seed has a thin, dark brown skin, which is sometimes removed before cooking.

In the United States, Oregon accounted for 99% of the nation's production in 2014, having a crop value of $129 million that is purchased mainly by the snack food industry. Expansion of hazelnut production in Ontario, Canada, occurred in 2017.        Source

O.B.E.

Jeff Lynne

Electric Light Orchestra’s Jeff Lynne, grime rapper Dizzee Rascal, documentarian Sir David Attenborough and singer Joan Armatrading were among the British artists to receive appointments on the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Lynne received an O.B.E. (Order of the British Empire) for his “services to music”; in addition to his tenures with ELO and the Traveling Wilburys, Lynne produced albums and co-wrote music with artists like Tom Petty, George Harrison, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison.

Dizzee Rascal — real name Dylan Kwabena Mills — received an M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire, the BBC reports.

The Queen’s Birthday Honours are customarily announced in June, but were postponed until October 10th due to the coronavirus pandemic. In 2019, Elvis Costello and M.I.A. were among the artists to receive Birthday Honours, while Elton John, Queen drummer Roger Taylor and Olivia Newton-John were recognized by Queen Elizabeth’s New Year’s Honours List in late-December.

No Time For Sex

Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda has no time for crazy sex but that’s okay — she’s had plenty of it. On Friday, the 82-year-old icon appeared remotely on The Ellen DeGeneres Show hosted by Girls Trip star Tiffany Haddish, who filled in for DeGeneres.

"I gotta say, you look amazing,” Haddish, 40, told Fonda. “...I need to know because you look so good, are you still having sex? Are you having, like, crazy sex?"

“No,” answered the actress, giving a thumbs-down. “No, zero...I don’t have time. I’m so old and I’ve had so much of it, I don’t need it right now because I’m too busy.”

Fonda said her ex-husband and CNN founder Ted Turner, whom she married in 1991 and divorced a decade later once told her, “‘If you wait too long, it grows over.’ I think he’s right.” She added, “I couldn’t have sex again, even if I wanted to.”

The Oscar-winning actress has made no secret of her love life, including one big regret: She never slept with singer Marvin Gaye. “He wanted to and I didn’t. I was married to Tom,” Fonda told the New York Times last month, referencing her second ex-husband Tom Hayden, the late activist. After Gaye’s 1984 death, Fonda learned that the Sexual Healing rocker kept her photo on his refrigerator.

Joins Twitter

Borat

Ahead of his return to the screen nearly 14 years, Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat has joined Twitter, taking hits and trolling everyone in his path, primarily President Donald Trump (R-Inadequate).

Since joining the social media platform on Friday, Cohen’s comedic alter-ego has since used it to criticize the sitting president about his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. From making jokes about how more than 200,000 have died from the coronavirus under Trump to the president’s “sarcastic” endorsement of bleach as COVID-19 treatment, Borat Sagdiyev’s going all in for his comedic criticism.

“Trump would have leave hospital sooner, but he nice and did not want to hurt covid’s feelings,” the Twitter account posted.

Over the first 24 hours, the verified Borat account tweeted more than a dozen digs at both Trump and those in his inner circle. Along with quips about Trump, he the Twitter feed has also shared a mask-wearing PSA.

In the short video Cohen’s Borat talks about the “new plague” that originated in “Wuhan in Israel.” He encourages fans and viewers to wear recommended face coverings, but isn’t seen wearing one himself – correctly, that is. Upon zooming out, it becomes clear that Borat has fashioned his mask to fit like his trademark neon yellow swimsuit.

Surprises TikTok "Dreams" Star

Mick Fleetwood

All of Nathan Apodaca's "dreams" are coming true this week. Mick Fleetwood, co-founder of the legendary band Fleetwood Mac, surprised the TikTok star on air Friday to thank him for his viral video.

Apodaca's TikTok, which featured him skateboarding while drinking cranberry juice and singing along to Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams," has garnered over 38 million views on the platform. Fleetwood has already recreated the video himself, and Ocean Spray gifted Apodaca a truck.

The video helped the iconic 1977 hit song have its biggest-ever week on streaming services. BBC News brought the two men together during a surprise interview on Friday.

"One, we owe you," Fleetwood told a shocked Apodaca during the remote interview. "It's such a celebration of everything. I've heard you talking about it, and it's so joyous and fun."

"I just wanna say, outside of Fleetwood Mac, we owe you. It's such a great story, and so needed," he told the Idaho native. "In days that are really challenging…it makes people smile, and I'm so happy to be part of it. Congratulations on a wild, wild skateboard journey that has led us to talking today."

"Rescues" Woman

Border Patrol

"Border Patrol Agents Rescue Woman in Labor," the release from Customs and Border Protection read on Friday.

What border officials didn't mention was that, just hours after their purported rescue, they separated the Honduran immigrant from her newborn and detained her pending possible removal, according to lawyers and advocates.

Border agents responding to a 911 call Wednesday night found the woman shortly after she'd delivered her baby alone in a field in Eagle Pass, Texas. The officials first transported mother and child to a nearby hospital, then the child was airlifted to a neonatal intensive care unit in San Antonio, hours from where they held her mother in custody.

(The Customs and Border Protection release incorrectly said the call came Thursday, as appeared in earlier reporting, and agents apparently provided the hospital with the wrong date of birth.)

"They told her she was going to be sent back to Mexico without her baby," said Amy Maldonado, who is legally representing the mother. The woman's cousin is in Sacramento and spoke with her by phone from detention. The newborn is a U.S. citizen.

Loses Fight

State Department

A federal appeals court has ruled against the Trump administration’s attempt to deny citizenship to one of two twins born overseas to a gay married couple.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco concluded on Friday that an earlier decision by a Los Angeles trial judge should stand and that four-year-old Ethan Dvash-Banks is an American citizen.

Ethan was conceived with the sperm of his Israeli biological father and born in Canada through surrogacy.

His other father is a US citizen, and a district court ruled in May 2019 that legally a child does not have to prove a biological relationship if their parents were married at the time of their birth and that Ethan should be issued a passport.

The unusual case began not long after the twins were born. The American consulate in Toronto denied Ethan’s citizenship after DNA tests that showed he was the biological son of Elad Dvash-Banks, an Israeli citizen.

Ancient Books Held In Vatican Library

Mexico

The Mexican government has formally asked Pope Francis for the temporary return of several ancient indigenous manuscripts held in the Vatican library ahead of next year's 500-year anniversary of the Spanish conquest of Mexico.

The request to allow the texts to be exhibited in Mexico was made in a two-page letter addressed to Pope Francis and posted on President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's Twitter page on Saturday but dated Oct. 2.

It was delivered to the pope by Lopez Obrador's wife, Beatriz Gutierrez Muller, who met with him at the Vatican following a meeting she had on Friday with Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

One of the three codicies, or books, requested is the Codex Borgia, an especially colorful screen-fold book spread across dozens of pages that depicts gods and rituals from ancient central Mexico.

It is one of the best-preserved examples of pre-conquest Aztec-style writing that exists, after Catholic authorities in colonial-era Mexico dismissed such codicies as the work of the devil and ordered hundreds or even thousands of them burned in the decades following the 1521 conquest.

“Patron Saint Of The Internet,”

Teenager Beatified

A 15-year-old Italian computer whiz who died of leukemia in 2006 moved a step closer to possible sainthood Saturday with his beatification in the town of Assisi, where he is buried.

Carlo Acutis is the youngest contemporary person to be beatified, a path taken by two Portuguese shepherd children living in the early 1900s who were proclaimed Catholic saints in 2017.

At the beatification ceremony in Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, a portrait of Acutis was slowly unveiled, revealing a smiling teen in a red polo shirt, his curly dark hair illuminated by a halo of light. Cardinal Agostino Vallini, the papal legate for the Assisi basilicas, kissed each of the boy’s mask-wearing parents, Andrea Acutis and Antonia Salzano, after reading the proclamation decreed by Pope Francis.

Already touted as the “patron saint of the internet,” Acutis created a website to catalog miracles and took care of websites for some local Catholic organizations. While still in elementary school, Acutis taught himself to code using a university computer science textbook, and then learned how to edit videos and create animation.

Goes Unsold At Auction

1794 Silver Dollar

A 1794 silver dollar believed to be among the first ever minted in the U.S., and the most valuable, went unsold during a public auction in Las Vegas.

Legend Auctions chief executive Matthew Bell said offers for the coin dubbed the Flowing Hair Silver Dollar didn’t reach a minimum bid and Las Vegas resident Bruce Morelan retained ownership.

Morelan sold 12 rare coins during the Thursday event at the Bellagio resort, reaping almost $4 million.

Coin collecting experts had thought the Flowing Hair coin could sell for more than the $10 million Morelan spent to buy it in 2013.

Welcome!

You have reached the Home page of BartCop Entertainment.

Do you have something to say?
Anything that increased your blood pressure, or, even better, amused or entertained?

Do you have a great album no one's heard?
How about a favorite TV show, movie, book, play, cartoon, or legal amusement?
A popular artist that just plain pisses you off?
A box set the whole world should own?
Vile, filthy rumors about Republican hypocrites?

Just plain vile, filthy rumors?

In other words, submissions are welcome.
