Paul Krugman: Reform Turns Real (New York Times)
So Obamacare is off to a good start, with even the bad news being really good news for the program's future. We're not quite there yet, but more and more, it looks as if health reform is here to stay.
Paul Krugman: Hapless and Hopeless (New York Times)
During the Bush years, I would often run into people mocking W for being stupid. I never thought he was - incurious, anti-intellectual, but not stupid. And the people around him certainly weren't stupid - cynical, dishonest, but not stupid, especially regarding matters political. The current situation is different. These guys are cynical and dishonest - but they're also very, very stupid.

Little Iodine was a popular Sunday comic strip, created by Jimmy Hatlo, which was syndicated by King Features and had a long run from 1943 until 1985. The strip was a spin-off from They'll Do It Every Time, an earlier Hatlo creation.
First seen during the 1930s in a supporting role in Hatlo's popular gag panel, They'll Do It Every Time, Little Iodine was the daughter of Henry Tremblechin and his wife, Cora. Her purpose was to serve as a pesky nuisance to the strip's star, Henry, and her behavior caused endless misery for her mild-mannered, easily unsettled father.
However, Iodine proved to be popular in her own right, stealing the strip from her parents, so Hatlo promoted the character into her own strip in 1943. Iodine's antics gave the Sunday comics page a female precursor to Hank Ketcham's Dennis the Menace. From 1943 to 1963, Little Iodine was written and drawn by Hatlo, who said, "I tried to make her the embodiment of all the brats I knew... I tried to make her naughty as hell-and still likable."

If I had an, 'Agent', as does another of your devotees, I would just say: "My Agent won't allow me to identify this character because she is also his client," (or other BS), but I don't.
I could just take the day off to save face, but my integrity won't allow for such a charade. (Do I get ANY points here at all?)
So, I'll merely bow my head in shame, for I truly don't know...

Bruce Link Comment - I never really wondered about what the "Horse With No Name" by "America" meant. But, I sure as heck did with this tune off their "Hat Trick" album. ? America - Submarine Ladies ( + lyrics 1973) - YouTube The title has absolutely nuthin' to do, that I can decipher, with the lyrics. I liked it, though. Still do. Kinda sappy, yeah, but it has a catchy repetitive banjo throughout and good harmonies. It's probably my fa-vo-rite tune of theirs.

My agent just called me and asked if I knew the trivia question. I told him no, as above. He laughed (yowled, actually) and said it was "Mad Martha". I said, "Really? Mad as in angry?". He said no, mad as in the British meaning of mad. You know, like, "You're mad, I tell you! Mad!". I told him I thought he was hittin' the catnip a little too early in the day and hung up. But, then I took another look at the close-up and thought, "Hmmm". Those hooded eyelids, arched eyebrows and nonsensical smile appear rather... um... maniacal. Maybe Ol' Bill was right. But, I wonder about the name...

Happy Birthday this day to:

Have you ever run into someone you haven't seen in, say 30 or 49 years? And you know exactly who it is and why the person is so familiar to you but you can't, for the life of you, remember the persons name? And they see you and say, "Joe, how are you? I haven't seen you in ages." And you say, "Wow, yeah, how ya doin'?" Has it ever happened to you? Has it? of course it has and that's exactly what happened when I saw today's quiz person. Was it Lil' Eva? Yeah, that's it Little Eva. No, wait, Little Eva sang the Locomotion. Damn, who is it?
Then it came to me. Finally. Little Iodine, not Little Eva.

Graffiti by the secretive British artist Banksy is turning up on the streets of New York City - and all over social media.
Banksy announced on his website that he is undertaking "an artists residency on the streets of New York" this month.
He's posting pictures of his work on the website and fans are plastering the images all over Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Though he's not providing exact locations, those who happen to come across the works are trying to spread the word.
The Daily Telegraph, a British outlet, has created an online map to try to keep track of the images. The Museum of Modern Art posted links on its Twitter feed with a "Banksy watch" tag.

A quilter inspired by aLake Michigan lakeshore near her home was declared the winner Friday of the $200,000 ArtPrize competition inMichigan.
Ann Loveless of Frankfort, Mich., won the public voting at the annual 19-day event in Grand Rapids, Mich., which ends Sunday. Her quilt is titled "Sleeping Bear Dune Lakeshore," named for a national lakeshore in northern Michigan.
It was displayed on a wall at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, one of 168 venues showing ArtPrize entries, but then was moved to an outdoor tent after the federal government shutdown closed the museum. Loveless said she has made art quilts for 10 years, but at 20 feet long, this was the biggest so far. She and her husband own State of the Art Framing & Gallery in Beulah, Mich.
She said she would use some of her winnings to buy fabric and a new sewing machine and to expand her gallery.
When the cotton mill closed, the rural Georgia town of Grantville began a slow transformation into a ghost town.
Over the decades, time turned the remains of the town into something almost post-apocalyptic, the perfect modern-day set for humans and "walkers" to attack one another. That's how the hugely popular TV show "The Walking Dead" ended up coming to town and bringing new life to Grantville.
Several key scenes in one episode from the AMC series were filmed on and near a one-block stretch of antique buildings on Grantville's Main Street.
The series' fourth season premieres on Oct. 13. Crews have been filming the new episodes in Georgia, but they keep locations of future episodes closely guarded secrets until the shows air.
In Grantville, the town's ruins were featured prominently last season. Bodies of walkers slain on the show were buried in a vacant lot beneath the brick archway remaining from a cotton mill building. Gunshots were fired from a nearby rooftop.

A 92-year-old Northern California woman who is the nation's oldest full-time national park ranger said Friday she's surprised that she has joined the ranks of those currently out of work due to the ongoing U.S. government shutdown.
Even after four days, Betty Reid Soskin, who works at the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, Calif., said she's still devastated after being furloughed earlier this week.
"At 92, I am very sensitive to the passage of time. We learned about the furlough gradually," Soskin said. "When it came at midnight (on) October 1, it seemed like a major interruption in my life because I don't have time and these young folks were wasting my time, precious time."
After a life in public service, Soskin became a park ranger seven years ago where she leads tours at the historical California park and museum that honors the women who worked in factories during wartime. But that all changed this week.
The United States could push past Russia and Saudi Arabia as the world's largest single producer of oil and of natural gas this year, a US government agency said Friday.
While the US was roughly even with Russia as the top producer in 2012 of the petroleum and gas fuels combined, it still lagged the longtime leader Saudi Arabia as an oil producer.
But helped by the boom in hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, production from shale deposits, the US will surpass the Saudis in petroleum output in 2013, making it the world leader in each fuel, the US Energy Information Administration said.
The EIA said that US oil production had increased dramatically over the past five years due to production in Texas and North Dakota, where the exploitation of shale-based reserves by controversial fracking techniques has rocketed.
Meanwhile, natural gas production has shot up thanks to fracking-based production in the eastern part of the country, particularly in Pennsylvania.

Nicaragua is pulling out the stops to try to aid threatened tapirs, an endangered mammal sometimes mistaken for anteaters or tiny hippos.
Experts in Nicaragua say the tapir's long gestation period, poaching and loss of habitat caused by logging have led to dwindling numbers of the distinct-looking animal.
"The tapir is the most endangered animal right now in Nicaragua, and in the world, because its gestation period is so long -- they are pregnant for 400 days -- so they are dying out," Eduardo Sacasa, a veterinarian in charge of Nicaragua's National Zoo tapir project, told AFP.
Aside from their long pregnancies, they usually have just one offspring per birth. They can grow as large as 300 kilos (660 pounds), live up to 18 years and have hooves similar to horses or rhinos.
The steady gaze and beatific smile are reminiscent of the world's best known painting, the Mona Lisa.
Those clues, along with carbon dating and other scientific tests, have led Italian experts to claim that they have found the holy of holies of the art world: a previously unknown Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece.
Experts believe that the newly discovered painting is the full-blown, oil version of a pencil sketch drawn by Leonardo of a Renaissance noblewoman, Isabella d'Este, which now hangs in the Louvre Museum in Paris.
The oil painting was discovered recently in a Swiss bank vault, part of a collection of 400 works owned by an Italian family who have asked not to be identified.
Measuring 24 inches by 18 inches, it bears a striking resemblance to the Leonardo sketch held by the Louvre - the woman's posture, her hairstyle, her striped dress, and the way she holds her hands are almost identical.
