You're sitting in your apartment in a midsized Syrian city, or maybe you're relaxing in your farmhouse just outside of Mosul, in Iraq.
And a plane, high up, but down low enough so you can hear the noise, drops a bomb on you. The bomb hits the corner of your apartment building or the edge of your farmhouse roof.
Christina H: 5 Reasons You Should Be in a Mixed Race Relationship (Cracked)
Society is facing more problems than ever, and I have a solution that can fix at least three of them. We all need to find a partner of a different race and make babies with them. If you are gay or unable to have biological children, just make sure that any children you do raise were produced by this method.
In the backstory of 'Gilligan's Island', The Professor had taken the three-hour tour to relax before he began writing a book. What was the title of that book?
221B Baker Street is the London address of the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, created by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In the United Kingdom, postal addresses with a number followed by a letter may indicate a separate address within a larger, often residential building. Baker Street in Holmes' time was a high-class residential district, and Holmes' apartment was probably part of a Georgian terrace.
At the time the Holmes stories were published, addresses in Baker Street did not go as high as 221. Baker Street was later extended, and in 1932 the Abbey National Building Society moved into premises at 219-229 Baker Street. For many years, Abbey National employed a full-time secretary to answer mail addressed to Sherlock Holmes. In 1990, a blue plaque signifying 221B Baker Street was installed at the Sherlock Holmes Museum, situated elsewhere on the same block, and there followed a 15-year dispute between Abbey National and the Holmes Museum for the right to receive mail addressed to 221B Baker Street. Since the closure of Abbey House in 2005, ownership of the address by the Holmes Museum has not been challenged, despite its location between 237 and 241 Baker Street.

Easy - Sherlock Holmes.
I read all those stories when I was 18 or so, but I haven't been absorbed in Holmes/Watson minutiae as many are.
I am reminded though, of this review, which starts out with a quote:
"But the Solar System!" I protested.
"What the deuce is it to me?" he interrupted impatiently: "you say that we go round the sun. If we went round the moon it would not make a pennyworth of difference to me or my work."
-Colloquy between Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes in A Study in Scarlet
And down a bit, to put a correct view of the universe into people's heads we must first get an incorrect view out. People believe a lot of nonsense about the world of phenomena, nonsense that is a consequence of a wrong way of thinking. The primary problem is not to provide the public with the knowledge of how far it is to the nearest star and what genes are made of, for that vast project is, in its entirety, hopeless. Rather, the problem is to get them to reject irrational and supernatural explanations of the world, the demons that exist only in their imaginations, and to accept a social and intellectual apparatus, Science, as the only begetter of truth. The reason that people do not have a correct view of nature is not that they are ignorant of this or that fact about the material world, but that they look to the wrong sources in their attempt to understand. It is not simply, as Sherlock Holmes thought, that the brain is like an empty attic with limited storage capacity, so that the accumulated clutter of false or useless bits of knowledge must be cleared out in a grand intellectual tag sale to make space for more useful objects. It is that most people's mental houses have been furnished according to an appallingly bad model of taste and they need to start consulting the home furnishing supplement of the Sunday New York Times in place of the stage set of The Honeymooners. The message of The Demon-Haunted World is in its subtitle, Science as a Candle in the Dark.

At least fictionally.
I've read a lot of books about him. Quite the enduring character.

I like ALL the Sherlock Holmes movies and TV programs, and I especially liked the Basil Rathbone series. I like the new, modern Sherlock on CBS and that particular Dr. Watson is my favorite.

Actress and comedian Carol Burnett was honored by a Pennsylvania museum dedicated to actor Jimmy Stewart, a Hollywood star she was smitten with as a toddler during a trip to the movies with her grandmother in San Antonio, Texas.
Burnett received the museum's Harvey Award at a Friday night fundraiser for the James M. Stewart Museum Foundation, based in the actor's Pennsylvania hometown of Indiana, about 45 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The banquet was a few miles away in Blairsville.
Burnett, 81, has fewer professional connections with Stewart than most past winners, nearly all of whom have worked with him professionally, but perhaps no past winner has a deeper emotional connection.
Burnett has called Stewart her idol. "I have talked about him, I have worshipped him," Burnett told the audience at the final episode of "The Carol Burnett Show" on March 29, 1978, ending an 11-year run on CBS, on which Stewart made a surprise appearance.

Critics are welcoming what the Emmys website televisionacademy.com is calling "one of the most diverse on-screen slates in over a decade."
Thirty years after the groundbreaking "The Cosby Show," ABC has launched "Black-ish," a family sitcom that takes a humorous look at African-American identity.
One much-anticipated series, "Jane the Virgin," on The CW, brings together a majority Hispanic cast for the story of a religious young teacher who is accidentally inseminated during a visit to the doctor.
And a rare actor of Asian origin, John Cho, stars in "Selfie," a comedy series, on ABC.
TNT announced on Friday that the primetime soap opera, a reboot of the 1980s classic, will not be returning for a fourth season.
"TNT has decided not to renew Dallas. We are extremely proud of the series, which defied expectations by standing as a worthy continuation of the Ewing saga. We want to thank everyone involved with the show, from the extraordinary cast to the impeccable production team, led by the show's creative forces, [executive producers] Cynthia Cidre and Mike Robin," a TNT spokesperson said in a statement. "We especially want to thank the people of Dallas for their warm and generous hospitality during the production of the series."
While the reboot kicked off with impressive ratings in 2012, its viewership shrank after the death of Larry Hagman, who had reprised his pivotal role of J.R. Ewing, in November 2012. The 81-year-old was filming the second season of the show at the time. In addition to Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray were also among the cast members from the original series. New to the series for the reboot were Juan Pablo Di Pace, Julie Gonzalo, Brenda Strong, Josh Henderson, Jordana Brewster, and Jesse Metcalfe.

Two rare sculptures inspired by goddesses are among the prized pieces to be sold at Sotheby's impressionist and modern art auction in New York.
The works by Alberto Giacometti and Amedeo Modigliani come from private collections. The sale is Nov. 4.
Giacometti's "Chariot" is a 1951 bronze sculpture of an elongated figure atop a wheeled chariot. It's estimated to sell for over $100 million. The 1951 painted cast piece has been in the same collection for over 40 years. Giacometti made several copies of "Chariot," and two of them were painted.
Modigliani's "Tete" (teht) was carved in 1911 and 1912 from a block of limestone scavenged from a Paris construction site. Its presale estimate is $45 million. It has never appeared at auction.
As November's election draws closer, Democrats across the country are working polls predicting that Republicans may edge them out to gain a Senate majority. If Republicans take control of the Senate and hold the House majority, even more gridlock along party lines is expected.
But there are places where Democrats are making inroads, even in traditionally red states that require uphill battles to get elected. Here are a few places with robust liberal campaigns that are fighting against the odds.
South Dakota hasn't elected a Democratic president since 1964 (hey, LBJ!), and its political reputation since then has been awfully red. When Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson announced he would not seek reelection, the GOP backed former governor Mike Rounds in hopes of swiping the seat. But the state's Democrats have put up a good fight with candidate Rick Weiland. Just this week the gap between the two grew even closer, according to Public Policy Polling, with Rounds' approval rating dipping to 35 percent, and "Weiland continues to be better liked and within single digits of Rounds."
Georgia Democrats made headlines recently for their massively effective efforts to register minority voters, inciting GOP panic and an investigation into alleged "voter fraud" by Republican Secretary of State Brian Kemp's office in a thinly veiled attempt to stall the successful registration campaign.
In a red state that just may turn purple, Democratic Senate candidate Michelle Nunn needs all the left-leaning new voters she can get. Late September polls prove the GOP may be right to panic: Nunn's opponent, Republican David Perdue, is leading by just 46 percent over her 45 percent. Nunn's campaign fund-raising efforts have been successful, contributing to pro-Democrat ads in Georgia outpacing those that are pro-Republican.
Sweden's decision to recognise a Palestinian state is "courageous," senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat said Friday, calling on other EU states to follow suit.
"We salute the announcement by the Swedish prime minister," said Saeb Erakat in the West Bank administrative capital of Ramallah.
Earlier, Sweden's new prime minister said in his inaugural address to parliament that "a two-state solution requires mutual recognition and the will to co-exist peacefully."
This should take place with respect for the "legitimate demands of the Palestinians and the Israelis as regards their right to self-determination and security," Stefan Loefven added.

Being unable to smell bacon frying may be far more dire than simply missing out on one of life's pleasures. In older adults, it could be a predictor of increased risk of death within five years.
In a study of more than 3,000 people aged 57 to 85, 39 percent of subjects who failed a simple smelling test died within five years, according to results published on Wednesday in the science journal PLOS ONE.
That compared with a 19 percent death rate within five years for those with moderate smell loss and 10 percent for those deemed to have a healthy sense of smell.
"Compared to a person with a normal sense of smell, a person with an absent sense of smell has three times greater risk of dying within a five-year span," Dr. Jayant Pinto, the study's lead author, said in a telephone interview.

North of the U.S.-Mexico border, a relatively barren stretch of an Arizona highway is lined with road signs that tell drivers how many kilometers they are from their destination - not how many miles.
The markers from Nogales to Tucson are a relic of a failed Carter administration pilot program that aimed to convince Americans to adopt the system of measure in use across much of the rest of the world.
The roughly 60-mile stretch (or about 100 kilometers) is the only continuous highway in the U.S. with metric signs, and it's the subject of a long-simmering spat over whether they should be changed back to the standard system.
"When I'm driving, I definitely can't do that math," said Nick Rodriguez, a 24-year-old who lives in Rio Rico.
Some who agree with Rodriguez took a shot at changing the signs four years ago when the state, which oversees them, received $1.5 million in federal stimulus funding.

A network of caves in rural Oregon may be the oldest site of human habitation in the Americas, suggesting an ancient human population reached what is now the United States at the end of the last Ice Age, Oregon officials said on Friday.
That realization prompted the U.S. National Park service to add the Paisley Five Mile Point Caves to its list of nationally important archaeological and historical sites, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department said in a statement.
Only recently have researchers become convinced that humans lived at the Paisley caves a thousand years before the human settlement documented in the so-called "Clovis" sites in New Mexico, Dennis Jenkins, director of the University of Oregon Archaeology Field School, said in the statement.
The "Clovis First" hypothesis holds that distinctive projectile-point artifacts found at multiple sites across the United States are signs of the first human settlements in North America, the statement said.
But Jenkins' team used radiocarbon dating to determine that more than 200 samples of human feces collected from the Paisley caves were deposited in the area 14,300 years ago, nearly 1,000 years before the human settlement evidenced in the Clovis era.
Jean-Claude Duvalier, who presided over what was widely acknowledged as a corrupt and brutal regime as the self-proclaimed "president for life" of Haiti until a popular uprising sent him into a 25-year exile, has died. He was 63.
Duvalier died Saturday from a heart attack at the home of a friend in Port-au-Prince where he had been staying, said his lawyer, Reynold Georges, and several officials in the impoverished nation.
The former leader, known as "Baby Doc," made a surprise return to Haiti in 2011, allowing victims of his regime to pursue legal claims against him in Haitian courts and prompting some old allies to rally around him. Neither side gained much traction, however, and a frail Duvalier spent his final years quietly in the leafy hills above the Haitian capital.
Haitian President Michel Martelly expressed his condolences to the former dictator's family, making no mention of the widespread human rights abuses that occurred under Duvalier and his more notorious predecessor and father, Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier.
The elder Duvalier was a medical doctor-turned-dictator who promoted "Noirisme," a movement that sought to highlight Haiti's African roots over its European ones while uniting the black majority against the mulatto elite in a country divided by class and colour.
"Papa Doc" tortured and killed political opponents, relying on a dreaded civilian militia known as the Tonton Macoutes.
In 1971, Francois Duvalier suddenly died of an illness after naming his son to succeed him. At 19, Jean-Claude Duvalier became the world's youngest president.
Jean-Claude Duvalier ruled for 15 years, retaining the Tonton Macoutes and the brutality of his father's regime, though to a lesser extent. The son's administration was seen as less violent and repressive than that of the father, though it perhaps was more corrupt.
As president, Duvalier married the daughter of a wealthy coffee merchant, Michele Bennett, in 1980. The relationship caused a scandal among old Duvalierists because she was a mulatto. The lavish wedding, which reportedly cost $5 million, also caused an uproar given Haiti's deep poverty.
The couple divorced in 1993. Duvalier later became involved with Veronique Roy, who accompanied him on his 2011 return to Haiti.
While in exile in France, Duvalier occasionally made public statements about his eagerness to return to Haiti. Supporters periodically marched on his behalf in the Haitian capital.
On Jan. 16, 2011, Duvalier made his surprise return. He said he wanted to help in the reconstruction of Haiti, whose capital and outlying cities were heavily damaged by a magnitude-7.0 earthquake the year before. Many suspected he came back in an effort to reclaim money he had allegedly stashed. Others said he merely wanted to die in his homeland.
Despite the occasional stay in the hospital, Duvalier seemed to enjoy his new life back home and was free to roam the capital. He was spotted attending government ceremonies and dining with friends in several high-end restaurants. In 2013 he began renovating an old house that Roy said had been destroyed in the wake of his 1986 ouster.
Duvalier and his wife, Michele, had two children, son Francois Nicolas "Nico" and daughter Anya.
A baby Ethiopian mountain viper coils up at the San Diego Zoo's Reptile House, Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, in San Diego. The venomous viper is one of seven born at the Zoo just over a week ago. There are only four zoos in North America to have this species and the San Diego Zoo is the first to have bred them. Ethiopian mountain vipers live in the southwest region of Ethiopia. Very little is known about their natural history since they are believed to have a very small range and are found only in high altitudes (6,500 to 9,800 feet) of the Rift Valley in Ethiopia.
