Jim Hightower: SPREADING WEAPONS IN THE NAME OF PEACE
Hey, Bucko - stop whining about this sour economy, and start thinking about the plight of others. For example: arms dealers. You've probably paid no attention to the hard fact that the global recession caused worldwide arms sales to plummet by 8.5 percent last year, pinching the profits of U.S. weapons pushers
Paulina Porizkova: The Responsibility Of Beauty (huffingtonpost.com)
If you are given something of great value, the least of your responsibility is to make use of it. Which is why I became a model. But here's the twist: since you don't actually have to do anything to pursue a career based on the way you look, it is seen as a shallow calling.
"How to Become a Scandal: Adventures in Bad Behavior" by Laura Kipnis: A review by Nancy Rommelmann
Ah, here's our cast now: A lovelorn astronaut driving cross-country wearing a diaper, thus avoiding pit-stops on her way to pepper-spray her former lover's girlfriend. Here's lisping literary fabulist James Frey, who basked in the commercial sunshine that is Oprah and was later pinned under her magnifying glass in what might be the greatest episode of Schadenfreude TV ever. And what pantheon of humiliation is complete without Linda Tripp, Monica Lewinsky's double-crossing, wire-wearing, dry-clean-averse gal pal, whose atrocious behavior was, as Laura Kipnis points out in her highly entertaining and wickedly smart 'How to Become a Scandal: Adventures in Bad Behavior,' matched by her remarkable physical ugliness.
President Obama has appointed Harvard Law Professor Elizabeth Warren to help organize the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The question now is whether Warren, a consumer champion, will wield the full power afforded that agency to crack down on Wall Street swindlers and speculators... Right now, the jury is still out...
There Will Be "Hell to Pay" If Elizabeth Warren Does Not Have Real Power | CommonDreams.org
Do you think Ms Warren and the CFPB will effectively protect consumers?

2.) Not a chance... She's merely 'window dressing'... The Bankers rule...

Lon Chaney (April 1, 1883 - August 26, 1930), nicknamed "The Man of a Thousand Faces," was an American actor during the age of silent films. He was one of the most versatile and powerful actors of early cinema. He is best remembered for his characterizations of tortured, often grotesque and afflicted characters, and his groundbreaking artistry with film makeup.
In the final five years of his film career (1925-1930), Chaney worked exclusively under contract to MGM, giving some of his most memorable performances. His portrayal of a tough-as-nails marine drill instructor in Tell It to the Marines (1926), one of his favorite films, earned him the affection of the US Marine Corps, who made him their first honorary member from the motion picture industry.

Atchafalaya - the name itself is something of a mystery. When exactly
the swamp got its name is unknown, though it means long river in one of
the local languages. What is known about this place of splendor and
inscrutability is that it is the largest swamp in the United States and
is the spiritual home of Cajun culture.

Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio will put his fame to work to raise global awareness about India's dwindling number of tigers, an official said Saturday.
DiCaprio and India's Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh met at a reception Friday in New York organised by the Coalition of Rainforest Nations, an inter-governmental organisation.
India's endangered tiger population has plummeted to 1,350 -- just over a third of the 3,700 estimated to be alive in 2002.
Earlier this year, Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan joined a campaign to protect the tiger.

Peter Jackson's Wingnut Films has issued a call for diminutive New Zealanders to audition for his troubled "Hobbit" movies, although the two-film project is yet to receive a studio green light.
Wingnut invited short people to attend a weekend casting call in Wellington for the films, a prequel to the Oscar-winning "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
The casting department was looking for men who were 123cm (four foot) to 158cm (five foot two inches) tall and women measuring 123cm to 153cm, an advertisement in the Dominion Post newspaper on Wednesday said.
A Wingnut spokesman said all applicants must be aged 16 or over and anyone not meeting the height requirements would be turned away from Sunday's casting call.
Full moons are often associated with tides, insanity and creatures like werewolves, but it turns out they're also good for brewing beer.
In Peruwelz, a small, sleepy town in southern Belgium, a family-owned brewery has produced its first batch of specialist beer brewed by the light of a full autumnal moon.
"We made several tests and noticed that the fermentation was more vigorous, more active," explained Roger Caulier, the owner of Brewery Caulier, which began in the 1930s when his grandfather started selling homemade beer from a handcart.
The finely balanced, gold-colored beer is 10 percent alcohol by volume, extremely strong by most European or U.S. standards but not uncommon in Belgium, where traditional monk-brewed beers frequently hit 10 or 12 percent.

An auction of fine art from the Lehman Brothers collection took in $12.3 million on Saturday, beating expectations but barely denting the billions owed from the financial group's 2008 bankruptcy, the biggest in U.S. history.
One work, an untitled 2001 piece by Julie Mehretu, who also created a well-received commissioned mural in the Manhattan headquarters of Goldman Sachs, sold for $1,022,500. The price set a record for the artist. Sixteen other artists also set records.
The sale took in a total of $12.28 million, with 83 percent of the 142 lots on offer finding buyers. Sotheby's had estimated the auction would take in $10 million to $12 million.
Many of the pieces in Saturday's sale were acquired by asset manager Neuberger Berman, which Lehman bought in 2003. Neuberger re-emerged in 2009 as an independent asset manager.
Actress Lindsay Lohan was freed from jail late on Friday night after spending around 15 hours behind bars for evidence of another failed drug test, a Los Angeles-based celebrity website reported.
The once-promising star was led handcuffed from a Beverly Hills courtroom early in the morning for a third time in three years when a judge found evidence of substance abuse, which would make her a criminal. He ordered Lohan, 24, jailed until an October 22 hearing, but was later reversed by a supervisor.
She was released from the Century Regional Detention Facility in the south-central Los Angeles suburb of Lynwood just before midnight, celebrity website TMZ reported.
In 2007, Lohan's original conviction landed her in jail for less than two hours, and the same charges were at the root of her current troubles when last Friday she admitted on Twitter that a court-ordered drug sample turned up bad.

NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker, who rose from a youthful producer at the "Today" show to run the multifaceted media business, said he would step down after cable provider Comcast takes control of the company later this year.
Zucker, the company's CEO, told employees of his planned departure in an e-mail he sent Friday, a day after he set terms of his exit deal.
The possible change-in-command had been looming since last December when Comcast Corp. agreed to buy a 51 percent stake in NBC Universal from General Electric Co. That deal still hasn't cleared regulatory hurdles, but that is expected around the end of the year.
Zucker said it was becoming clear over the past few months that an exit is looming, and that he understood companies like to put in their own management teams in such takeovers. Two weeks ago, Comcast's chief operating officer, Steve Burke, told Zucker that a change would be made when the deal was complete.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge had signaled earlier on Friday that after several false starts the IOC was finally prepared begin negotiating a deal for the 2014 Sochi Winter Games and the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The IOC president told Reuters in July that bidding could be put off until after the 2012 Olympics in London because of the uncertainty of the American economy. But with the U.S. economic picture improving the IOC said negotiations could start before the end of the year.
Competition for the U.S. television rights is expected to be fierce with NBC, CBS, ESPN-ABC and Fox all expressing interest.
Broadcasting rights are the IOC's biggest source of revenue for the IOC. NBC paid $2.2 billion for the exclusive rights to the Vancouver and London Olympics.

It's a life regimented in excruciating detail, down to the way they eat an orange. Silence is the norm, information is limited, e-mail is screened, close friendships are discouraged and family members are kept at bay - all in the name of God's will.
Known as consecrated women, they are lay Catholics affiliated with a conservative religious order who dedicate their lives to the church, making promises of chastity, poverty and obedience similar to the vows taken by nuns.
But the cult-like conditions they endure so alarmed Pope Benedict XVI that in May he ordered an extremely rare full Vatican investigation of the obscure group, which operates in the U.S., Mexico, Spain, the Philippines and a dozen other countries. The inquiry is expected to begin in the coming weeks.
The alleged abuses came to light during an eight-month Vatican investigation into the Legionaries of Christ, a secretive religious order beloved by Pope John Paul II but now discredited because of revelations that its charismatic founder sexually abused seminarians and fathered at least three children.
The women belong to the order's lay wing, Regnum Christi, a global community of some 70,000 Catholics in more than 30 countries who have families and regular jobs yet participate in the mission of bringing people closer to Christ.

Lady Liberty has been jilted at an auction of iconic items in New York City.
A copper cast of the tip of the Statue of Liberty's nose that was up for sale on Friday went unsold. The nose, which was expected to fetch between $150,000 and $200,000, was one of four made during a restoration effort in the 1980s.
Among the items that did sell was the falcon statuette in the 1941 film-noir classic "The Maltese Falcon." A spokeswoman for Guernsey's auction house says it was sold for $325,000 to a group of buyers that included actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
Two prop tablets from the movie "The Ten Commandments" carried by actor Charlton Heston during his portrayal of Moses sold for $18,000. The buyer's identity wasn't immediately known.
Longtime friend Jane Mak told the Los Angeles Times that Boyd died Tuesday on her birthday at her home in Dana Point.
As Grace Bradley, Boyd appeared in some three dozen movies in the 1930s and '40s but gave up her career when she married Hopalong, whose real name was William Boyd.
Hopalong died in 1972 but his wife continued to promote the Hopalong character, appearing at many tributes.
