Paul Krugman: SNAP Notes (New York Times)
… yes, there has been some expansion of eligibility - much of it with bipartisan support - so that more people are on food stamps now than during the early 1990s, even though incomes are similar. But the story of the past decade is overwhelmingly about a program doing exactly what it's supposed to do, aiding people facing real hardship.
Andrew Tobias: Happy and Healthy
Just a tiny bit of sarcasm before we get to the happy part: … I don't want higher income folks paying an extra $38,000 on each $1 million in dividends and capital gains they receive - I'd rather see millions of poor people uninsured and the elderly choosing between food and heat and medicine. I'd rather shut down the entire Federal government than fund this thing. That's just the way I roll. I'm a Republican, and I've voted 42 times to kill it.
Kate Bratskeir: The Habits Of Supremely Happy People (Huffington Post)
They surround themselves with other happy people. Joy is contagious. Researchers of the Framingham Heart Study who investigated the spread of happiness over 20 years found that those who are surrounded by happy people "are more likely to become happy in the future." This is reason enough to dump the Debbie Downers and spend more time with uplifting people.

The Apgar score was devised in 1952 by the eponymous Dr. Virginia Apgar as a simple and repeatable method to quickly and summarily assess the health of newborn children immediately after birth. Apgar was an anesthesiologist who developed the score in order to ascertain the effects of obstetric anesthesia on babies.
The Apgar score is determined by evaluating the newborn baby on five simple criteria on a scale from zero to two, then summing up the five values thus obtained. The resulting Apgar score ranges from zero to 10. The five criteria are summarized using words chosen to form a backronym (Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiration).

Lois in Oregon was first, and correct, with:
The APGAR test with the 1- minute score is administered to
determine how well the new-born baby tolerated the birthing
process. I knowed about it from watching Ghost Busters 2
when Egon and Ray subjected the way older than new-born
Oscar to their testing. Wonder what THAT guy's score was...
Leo in Hamburg, Germany iPadded:
The Apgar score evaluates newborn infants.

I remember that my son's score was low. I always thought it was because he was born from a C-section - and was just lazy! Hahaha.

Hoo-boy... this is a toughie... Okay, just guessin' now, I'm gonna go with a score that evaluates smartphone apps from out-frickin' standing to damn'd worthless and/or don't work as advertised... Ap (Application) + gar (garbage) = Apgar. The higher the score, the better they are... There's a bazillion of 'em out there, I'm tellin' ya, and I've had more than my fair share of duds, dagnabbit! They are a frickin' pain in the azz, particularly if'n ya pay fer them cuz there ain't no returnin' the sumbitches like ya could a piss-poor power tool, or some such thing. It borders on criminal, an' that's a fact! All ya can do is write a scathing review which the designers laugh at cuz they salt the reviews with fake glowing reports, the villains. Those scumbag low-lifes should, if'n there were any justice in the world (which, of course, there-is-not), be given a "squidgie" every day fer a year... Jus' like people who talk like pirates, dontcha know...

Alright, I made all that up and shame on me ('cept fer the worthless apps and the scoundrels that make them... oh, and the fake pirates, too) ... It's a quick method to determine the status of new born babies immediately post-birth. I learned that as an army medic at BAMC when I asked for a short stint (a week) in delivery just for the experience. We could do that. All the women delivering were wives of soldiers. Back then, very few female soldiers were allowed to remain as such if they became pregnant and those that were allowed to stay were always married, usually to soldiers. I then spent a week in the nursery unit lookin' after the little creatures which I enjoyed immensely. It actually helped me later on when I had my own little creatures... I like babies and children in general.

A University of Kansas journalism professor was placed on indefinite administrative leave Friday for a tweet he wrote about the Navy Yard shootings which said, "blood is on the hands of the #NRA. Next time, let it be YOUR sons and daughters."
David W. Guth, an associate professor of journalism, made the comment on Twitter after Monday's shootings in Washington, D.C., in which 13 people died, including the gunman. The tweet didn't attract much attention until Campus Reform.org posted a story Thursday, sparking a social media backlash that's spilled over into some state lawmakers calling for his dismissal.
The university also responded, as Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little issued a statement Friday saying that "in order to prevent disruptions to the learning environment," Guth was placed on indefinite administrative leave pending a review. His classes will be taught by other faculty members.
Guth said Thursday that gun rights advocates had orchestrated a social media campaign against him.
"I respect their First Amendment rights and it would be nice if they would respect mine," Guth said. "And, by the way, I even respect their Second Amendment rights.

Single-minded revellers gathered for the world-famous Oktoberfest beer festival Saturday, hoping the heady atmosphere of ale, lederhosen and oompah music will not be flattened by Germany's election fever.
The first keg was opened for the 180th edition of Munich's Oktoberfest to the traditional cry of "O'zapft is" ("The keg is tapped") by Social Democrat mayor Christian Ude, flanked by Bavaria's conservative state premier Horst Seehofer.
But on the eve of close national elections, the two leaders from rival parties kept politics off the agenda as party-goers, many sporting traditional Bavarian costumes, kicked off the 16-day celebration of the amber nectar.
Inside a huge beer tent, the economic crisis which has divided politicians in the race for the chancellery is little in evidence -- waitresses in Bavaria's low-cut dirndl dresses and waiters in lederhosen leather shorts ferry litre-sized glasses, known as a Mass, of frothy beer up and down the aisles.
The rising price of beer always touches off a debate, and this year was setting festival-goers back between 9.40 and 9.85 euros ($13-13.3) for a Mass.

Some of the richest ecosystems on Earth are estuaries, where freshwater and saltwater collide with the tides. For the first time, scientists have discovered an estuary beneath Antarctica's massive ice sheet.
A strange and singular ecosystem could exist in the estuary, hidden at the head of the thick Ross Ice Shelf in West Antarctica. (Ice shelves are floating platforms that form where glaciers or ice sheets flow onto the ocean.)
"We know in the subaerial environment that estuaries are fascinating," said Richard Alley, a glaciologist at Penn State University and co-author of a study reporting the find. "[Here] you've got a mixture of two very strange environments, so whether you're going to find anything that shakes up the world, I don't know, but it's a fascinating target."
The tidal mixing zone sits beneath the end of the Whillans Ice Stream, one of the fast-moving "ice rivers" in West Antarctica. Ice streams are features that flow quickly compared to the surrounding ice. If the name Whillans rings a bell, it might be because of Lake Whillans: Earlier this year, researchers announced the buried glacial lake contained microbial life.
M.I.A. said she's been subjected to a year and a half of legal harassment by the NFL since she extended a middle finger while performing alongside Madonna at the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show in 2012.
About a month after the Super Bowl, the NFL took action with the American Arbitration Association, demanding US$1.5 million from M.I.A. for breaching her performance contract and tarnishing the league's reputation, according to documents obtained by the Hollywood Reporter and detailed in a story Friday.
Last week the league pushed for a resolution, asking she be deemed liable on summary judgment before going to trial.
M.I.A. had been quiet about the legal wrangling that followed, but her attorney Howard King told the Hollywood Reporter she now plans to speak out against the league and its "ridiculous" actions.
"Of course, the NFL's claimed reputation for wholesomeness is hilarious," King said, "in light of the weekly felonies committed by its stars, the bounties placed by coaches on opposing players, the homophobic and racist comments uttered by its players, the complete disregard for the health of players and the premature deaths that have resulted from same, and the raping of public entities ready to sacrifice public funds to attract teams."
Marijuana legalization activists hope Alaska and Oregon will become the next two states to put recreational use of the drug before the voters, perhaps as early as next year.
A more robust state-by-state legalization effort is planned for 2016, when the presidential election is expected to boost turnout among younger voters who are seen as more pro pot, said Mason Tvert, spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project.
His group also plans to lobby lawmakers in five states, including Rhode Island and Hawaii, to legalize recreational pot by 2017, even as the drug remains classed as an illegal narcotic under federal law.
Washington and Colorado became the first states to legalize marijuana for recreational adult use after approving separate ballot measures last year. Some 20 states and the District of Columbia allow pot to be used for medical purposes.

Senior European Union officials told Israel to explain why its soldiers seized a truckload of humanitarian aid intended for Palestinians, saying they deplored the confiscation.
Israeli soldiers manhandled European diplomats on Friday and seized tents and emergency aid they had been trying to deliver to Palestinians whose homes were demolished this week.
A Reuters reporter saw soldiers throw sound grenades at a group of diplomats, aid workers and locals in the occupied West Bank, and yank a French diplomat out of the truck before driving it away.
Relations between Israel and the EU have been strained over the EU's decision, announced in July, to bar financial assistance to Israeli organizations operating in the occupied territories from next year.

Thousands of people marched through the Scottish capital Edinburgh on Saturday calling for independence, a year ahead of Scotland's historic referendum on whether to break away from the United Kingdom.
The pro-independence campaign "Yes Scotland" estimated that 20,000 supporters joined the march, turning the city centre into a sea of blue and white as they waved thousands of Scottish flags, though police said numbers were closer to 8,300.
Some of the men were clad in traditional Scottish kilts as they marched up Calton Hill, overlooking the city, to the sound of bagpipes.
Opinion polls suggest only around a third of the 5.3 million Scots currently intend to vote to break away, but Salmond insists he can convince a majority that independence would bring economic and political benefits.

A group of archaeologists has discovered a life-sized marble head of Aphrodite while uncovering an ancient pool-side mosaic in southern Turkey.
Archaeologists found the sculpture while working at a site called Antiochia ad Cragum (Antioch on the cliffs), on the Mediterranean coast. The researchers believe the region, which is dotted with hidden inlets and coves, would have been a haven for Cilician pirates - the same group who kidnapped Julius Caesar and held him for ransom around 75 B.C.
The excavators had been looking for more parts of the largest Roman mosaic ever found in Turkey: a 1,600-square-foot (150 square meters) marble floor elaborately decorated with geometric designs, adorning a plaza outside a Roman bath. During fresh excavations this past summer, they found the statue head lying face-down. The researchers think the marble head was likely long separated from its body; traces of lime kilns have been found near the site, suggesting many statues and hunks of stone would have been burned to be reused in concrete.
Past scholars have argued that southern Turkey's culture was too insular to be greatly impacted by Rome's reach and that it was a peripheral part of the empire. But the presence of an Aphrodite sculpture suggests Greek and Roman influence had become mainstream in far-flung cities like Antiochia ad Cragum in the first and second centuries A.D., the excavation's director Michael Hoff, an art historian at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, said in a statement.
