'' M oney . . .

Liabilities now total $1.6 billion in the Adelphia restatement.

WorldCom is thought to owe its banks approximately $4.5 billion....

That's the text of the latest attack ad rolled out by the party of Terry McAuliffe. The Democratic National Committee chairman plans to air them in selected battleground states and congressional districts throughout the country.

The obvious aim is to somehow tie the Bush administration to the recent rash of corporate scandals.....

Joseph Perkins

WTF? There has been a '?' floating at the bottom of this page for awhile (and if you've clicked on it), you've seen what the incredibly lazy, nationally syndicated hack Joseph Perkins, who failed to check his facts, felt worthy of comment. Hell, he thought it was worth a whole column.

The clip in question was most definitely NOT produced, or paid for by the Democratic party, or any representative of the Democratic party (yes, this is a fact). One would have thought that the San Diego Union-Tribune, being a 'real' newspaper and national syndicator, would have corrected, or at least acknowledged the errors in Joseph Perkins' column in a timely fashion. After all, Mr. Perkins is on their payroll.

To keep up to speed on how quickly the media responds when caught in a lie, follow the writings of 'Editor' at Blah3.com: Free Speech for the New Century, who is quite on top of the entire situation. : )

2 Star Fleet Captains, An Ensign & A Chief

Tim Hagan

Tim Hagan, a Democrat running for governor against a Republican incumbent with the Taft family political lineage and 20 times as much money, isn't shy about using his Hollywood connection.

Hagan's wife is actress Kate Mulgrew, who commands a loyal following from her days as Capt. Kathryn Janeway on "Star Trek: Voyager."

And on Saturday, a fund raiser for Hagan's campaign featured Mulgrew along with several of her fellow cast members, including Tim Russ (Vulcan security chief Tuvok) and Garrett Wang (Ensign Harry Kim).

The crew of Voyager was joined by William Shatner, Capt. James T. Kirk of the Enterprise on the original "Star Trek."

At the end of June, Hagan's campaign had $375,000 cash on hand, trailing Republican Gov. Bob Taft's $8.2 million.

Taft, the great-grandson of a president and the grandson and son of senators, had built his campaign bank to $6 million before Hagan even filed to run. In May, Taft raised $2 million in about two hours when resident Bush visited.

Hagan doesn't have such politically powerful connections — although former President Clinton is scheduled to appear Sept. 13.

Mulgrew and Shatner said they raise money for charities and issues close to them but generally shun politics.

"I've never been involved with any candidate," said Shatner, a Canadian citizen. "It became my opinion that she (Mulgrew) could only be involved with people and issues that I respect."

Salmonella Outbreak Probed

Walt Disney World

A salmonella outbreak at Walt Disney World sickened as many as 141 people, including visitors attending an athletic competition for organ-transplant recipients, health officials said Friday.

Eighteen cases were confirmed by laboratory tests. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta estimates 141 people who attended the U.S. Transplant Games in late June may have gotten sick.

Salmonella can cause diarrhea and fever. More serious infections can occur in children, the elderly and people with weak immune systems, such as organ transplant recipients.

After two people who attended the U.S. Transplant Games became sick, the CDC traced the source by asking people about their eating habits during the competition, Toth said. Of the 369 who responded, 82 reported being sick.

Because transplant recipients are more susceptible to infections than the general population, the CDC suggested that doctors place transplant patients who may have salmonella on antibiotics.

He's Not A Liberal, He Only Plays One On TV

OR - What Do They Have In Common?

Kelsey Grammer

Actor Kelsey Grammer, a rare Republican supporter among Hollywood's liberal elite, was in the audience Saturday as President Bush raised money for would-be GOP governor Bill Simon.

In an interview, the "Frasier" star called himself a "big fan" of the president, saying, "I think he makes a lot of sense and he's had some clarity when it was very important."

"The thing I most respond to in the political arena is people that actually don't play politics, and I think President Bush comes from a place that is sincere," Grammer said.

The actor was one of about 200 guests who paid $2,500 each to breakfast at the ritzy Regency Club in Westwood, the final of three fund-raising stops Bush was making in California to promote Simon.

While supporting the president, Grammer was less sure about Simon. "I don't know Bill Simon very well," he said.

Politically, Grammer called himself "kind of a liberal," a description he agreed could apply to the snooty Seattle shrink he plays on NBC.

"But I've always had a very conservative respect for the individual," Grammer added.

Actor and comedian Chris Rock threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Camden Yards on Saturday night — sort of.

Filming a scene from his upcoming movie, "Head of State," Rock walked onto the field wearing a Baltimore Orioles jersey with the No. 8 on the back — the number once worn by former Oriole star Cal Ripken.

This shirt, however, had the name "GILLIAM" on the back.

Rock plays a character who throws out the ceremonial first pitch before an Orioles game. The scoreboard in the background read, "Vote for Mays Gilliam!"

The actor, who also is directing the movie, walked to the mound to the cheer of the "crowd" — a few thousand fans arriving early for the game between the Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays.

New Collection Features Earliest Recordings

T. Rex

The inclusion of early recordings by Tyrannosaurus Rex is one of the highlights of the newly released Marc Bolan & T. Rex: 20th Century Boy--The Ultimate Collection. For many people, it's the first time they'll get to hear what Marc Bolan was doing before hits like "Bang A Gong (Get It On)" and "Jeepster" hit the radio.

Bolan's son Rolan said that having those tracks on 20th Century Boy allows listeners to learn more about his father as an artist. "What's really cool is that they're putting all the Tyrannosaurus Rex they did early with Tony Visconti in," he said. "That was just such basic and limited recording, in the sounds there and the songs. It was just such an interesting combination. It really captured the time when he was more involved in the hippie movement, and how the whole British scene adapted from that into the more electric sound."

Returning to Club

Vince Neil

Motley Crue lead singer Vince Neil will return to a Steamboat Springs nightclub after walking off stage last week, his manager said Friday.

Neil left the Levelz nightclub in this resort town Aug. 14 after someone threw something on stage, manager Burt Stein said. Stein said Neil felt threatened and left after performing about three songs.

"I've informed every artist I work with that if something starts flying on stage, get off the stage," Stein said. "It could turn into a real ugly scene."

Stein said no date had been set for the repeat performance.

World Air Guitar Winner

Zac Monro

Zac Monro played a mean guitar as he jumped on an outdoor stage in northern Finland, but he didn't even strike a chord.

As the red sun set behind the dark fir trees, he changed tactics and rolled on his back while thrashing madly with his hands — enough to give him the Air Guitar World Champion title for a second straight year.

Monro, a 32-year-old architect from Brixton, London — also known by his stage name "Mr. Magnet" — was one of 12 finalists in the three-day contest with competitors from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Norway and Austria.

Some 3,500 spectators cheered, clapped and whistled in the balmy summer night on the outskirts of this Baltic port city, 600 kilometers (370 miles) north of the capital, Helsinki, egging on the long-haired artists in masks, headbands and bright, skintight pants.

The contestants each mimed a minute-long excerpt from a rock piece of their choosing, followed by a mandatory performance of part of "Last Night," by The Strokes, a New York rock group.

The seventh Air Guitar World Championship is one of several zany events the Finns arrange in the summer, which include a cell phone throwing contest, boot throwing, wife carrying and mosquito swatting.

Releasing First Live Album

Prince

Prince will release his first-ever compilation of live material in the upcoming boxed set titled One Night Alone. The singer made the announcement via his NPG Music Club website, where members can download exclusive musical content from the "Purple One" to their computers.

This new collection features songs all recorded during the artist's critically acclaimed One Night Alone tour, which visited several cities in the U.S. and Canada earlier this year. For the outing, Prince and the New Power Generation hit the stage each night with no pre-determined set list, and without the fanfare of large stage production elements. The results of this approach gave fans simply the man and his music, which is captured on the One Night Alone set.

The concerts will be held Nov. 25. and Nov. 27 at the 18,000-seat Palacio de los Deportes, a sports arena in central Mexico City, organizers said this week.

"Mexico City audiences are very participative, and that's my kind of crowd," McCartney said in a statement.

What Corporate Responsibility?

bill simon

Bush took a political gamble coming to California to stump for Bill Simon Jr., whose campaign for governor has been reeling since his family firm was fined almost $80 million for fraudulent business dealings.

But except for three invitation-only fund-raisers -- which raised $2.6 million for Simon and $750,000 for other California Republicans -- the resident kept the embattled candidate at a distance, literally ignoring him at his two main public events.

Underscoring White House concerns about being associated with a candidate tainted by corporate scandal, Bush aides considered canceling the visit, and there was speculation Bush would choose not to appear side-by-side with Simon.

But the visit created several awkward moments.

When Simon was by his side, Bush embraced him as a candidate whose experience in business would help California balance its budget. "Bill Simon is a proven businessman who can get that done," he said.

But Bush did not mention corporate accountability and his crackdown on business fraud during either of the Simon fund-raisers on Friday.

Simon kept out of sight at public events. He was seen waiting in a parked van as Bush wrapped up a visit with Hispanic leaders in Santa Ana.

In Memory

Dean Riesner

Dean Riesner, the screenwriter behind several of Clint Eastwood's early films, including "Dirty Harry and "The Enforcer," has died. He was 83.

Riesner died Aug. 18 of natural causes at his Encino home.

"He was able to bring an economy of language and make scenes come alive," said director and longtime friend Sean Cunningham. "He left room for the actors and the director to function, but he always drove the story forward."

Riesner's first film starring Eastwood was the 1968 detective feature "Coogan's Bluff." He also wrote "Play Misty for Me" (1971), the "Dirty Harry" (1971) screenplay and "The Enforcer" (1976), a sequel to the Dirty Harry saga about a San Francisco police officer.

In the 1970s, Riesner adapted Irwin Shaw's popular novel "Rich Man, Poor Man" for television, and Arthur Hailey's "The Moneychangers."

Riesner, born in New York, was the son of silent film director Charles Riesner. His film career started at age 5 when he played roles in his father's films. He appeared in the Charlie Chaplin film "The Pilgrim" (1923), under the name Dinky Riesner.

Riesner's first screen credit came in 1939 under the name Dean Franklin for "Code of the Secret Service, which starred a young Ronald Reagan.

Riesner served in the Coast Guard during World War II and later wrote and directed "Bill and Coo," a live-action film that told the story of two birds terrorized by a black crow. The film won a special citation from the motion picture academy in 1948.

He also wrote screenplays for the biopic of 1920s and '30s torch singer Helen Morgan, "The Helen Morgan Story" (1957), and for "Paris Holiday" (1958), a Bob Hope film.

In television, Riesner wrote for several popular series including "Lawman," "Ben Casey," "The Outer Limits" and "Rawhide," which was where he first encountered Eastwood.

Riesner is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A two-year old meerkat sits in its cage at the Buenos Aires' Zoo, July 30, 2002. Meerkats are mammals with dark eyes that are lined by dark fur, making them appear to be wearing built-in sunglasses. They can live in the wild for up to ten years and in captivity for 15, reaching a height of 12 inches (30 centimeters) and weighing two pounds (900 grams). Considered intelligent and communicative animals, they flourish in their environment and are not endangered. Five of the mammals arrived on an exchange from a Johannesburg zoo.
