roger ebert's journal: I'm safe on board. Pull up the life rope
Having read through some 600 comments about universal health care, I now realize I took the wrong approach in my previous blog entry. ... My mistake was writing from the pragmatic side. I should have followed my heart and gone with a more emotional approach. I believe universal health care is, quite simply, right.
Rogert Ebert: INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (R; 4 stars)
Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" is a big, bold, audacious war movie that will annoy some, startle others and demonstrate once again that he's the real thing, a director of quixotic delights.
Alice is an American sitcom television series which ran from August 31, 1976 to July 2, 1985 on CBS. The series was based on the 1974 film Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.
Alice works alongside Mel Sharples (Vic Tayback), the grouchy, stingy owner and cook of the greasy spoon, and fellow waitresses and friends, sassy, man-hungry Florence Jean "Flo" Castleberry (Polly Holliday), and neurotic, scatterbrained Vera Louise Gorman (Beth Howland).
Flo's catch phrase, "Kiss my grits!" was popular at the time her character appeared on Alice. According to Polly Holliday, the line was originally written as "Kiss my honeydew!", but did not get any laughs. (In the original film, Flo, as played by Diane Ladd, tells Mel in one scene to "kiss me where the sun don't shine.") Another of Flo's catchphrases was "When donkeys fly!"

I never could get into that show. When it aired, by children were very young, and I knew no one who's lives even resembled the lives of Alice (has-been singer and single Mom), Flo (the bimbo), Vera (dumber than dirt), or Mel (a real Chauvinist jerk). But EVERYONE in the country was parroting the, "Kiss my Grits" line, as I recall...
Of course nowadays, their characters have mimicked many a friend's lives - guess the show was before it's time....
PS: While we did have some rain last night, the heat persists. Hotter than Hades, but now our beaches on the coast are CLOSED due to the combination of higher than normal waves, and no money to pay extra lifeguards! I wonder if California (and we KNOW that state is broke) closes their beaches for high waves and lifeguard funds?? People here are not happy, and you KNOW the surfers will be here to try out the waves. Hummmmm, wonder if we have funds for beach police?

I used to watch Alice with my grandma. Flo said "Kiss my grits!" at least once per episode.

I love grits, that was not always the case. Until I got acquainted with Carla, my one and only wife, I wasn't really sure exactly what grits were. Although my mother's family were from the South, I wasn't raised in that culture. Carla, My Little Georgia Rose ,was and I was soon introduced to the grits cuisine. My favorite breakfast is a plate of cheese grits with two fried eggs on top, maybe a little bacon and served with a side of toast, "cuz grits is good on toast."
But don't you think, "Kiss my grits" is a foolish thing to say? Why would any real person ever say something like that? They wouldn't.
PS I've been absent from the quiz for a few days. We went to the Big City (Traverse City) for a series of doctor's appointments and medical tests for Carla. We still don't know what it is that's causing her problems, but we do know it's not her heart or lungs, so for that we're grateful.

A world famous legend recalling how German Luz Long crossed racial barriers to help American rival Jesse Owens qualify for the long jump final at the 1936 Olympics has been downplayed by Long's son Kai.
Kai Long said his father, whose actions helped Owens win the gold, prompting a furious Adolf Hitler to leave the stadium early, had simply acted within the old tradition of amateur sportsmanship.
The 1936 Games, which the United States came close to boycotting because of concerns over anti-semitism, were marked by the performances of Owens. The son of an American slave, the "Black Pearl" won four gold medals from the 100m and 200m, the men's relay and the long jump.
Long was one of several athletes held up as a symbol of Hitler's supposedly superior Aryan race but his actions appeared to demonstrate his dismissal of that notion, giving Owens advice which, ultimately, led to the American's victory and the German settling for silver.
If proof were needed that flame is still alive, the grandaughters of both Long and Owens, respectively Julie Long and Marlene Dortch, will present the medals for the long jump later on Saturday.

Personalized Internet radio stations got a boost Friday when a federal appeals court ruled that Yahoo's LAUNCHcast music service was not interactive enough to be forced to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in licensing fees.
The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan said LAUNCHcast did not offer its users so much control over selecting songs for personalized Internet radio stations that the users would choose those webcasts over buying music.
LAUNCHcast enabled users to create stations that played songs based on how the user rated songs, artists and albums. The appeals court cited the random nature of personalized playlists when it said LAUNCHcast was not required to pay individual licensing fees to copyright holders of each song it plays for its users.
Instead, LAUNCHcast is only required to pay a statutory licensing fee set by the Copyright Royalty Board, one that tends to be cheaper and doesn't require negotiations with individual recording companies. Those fees go into a pool that are then split among copyright holders.
Paris' Picasso Museum is closing its doors for renovations, spiriting away its masterpieces under high security to government warehouses for more than two years while seeking to expand the much-visited but cramped site.
It will stop lending out Picasso artworks during the overhaul, which will begin with experts updating, computerizing and restoring the inventory, museum director Anne Baldassari said Saturday.
The museum, in a baroque mansion in Paris' Marais district, opened in 1985, and it traces the Spanish-born artist's prolific career. Picasso died in 1973.
Renovation of the 3,000-square-meter (32,000-square-foot) space will begin early next year. It is expected to last two years and cost C20 million, the museum said in a statement.

Guitarist James Burton, who is known for working with the Elvis Presley and Ricky Nelson bands, led the ensemble of guitar players in a celebration of his 70th birthday, but failed in his attempt to make the Guinness Book of World Records.

Andrea Corr's wedding to stockbroker Brett Desmond has transformed an Irish village into a celebrity-watchers' paradise.
And at risk of breaking wedding etiquette, U2 frontman Bono almost stole the show as he pulled up with wife Ali in a sleek Italian Maserati sports car.
Singing sensation Andrea, a chart-topper with her family in the late 1990s, waved to hundreds of cheering fans as she calmly strolled into St Joseph's Church in Miltown Malbay, Co Clare.
Andrea shot to stardom in the 1990s with her sisters Caroline, Sharon and brother Jim with the group The Corrs, releasing several hit singles.
Reality shows have good reason to vet contestants through background checks, and most do: There are issues of liability, employability and, of course, marketability to consider.
51 Minds, the production company behind VH1's "Megan Wants a Millionaire," said Thursday that it had commissioned a check on the 17 wealthy bachelors vying for the love of former "Rock of Love" contestant Megan Hauserman - but it didn't turn up the troubled past of Ryan Alexander Jenkins. According to the Alberta, Canada, Ministry of Justice, Jenkins was sentenced to 15 months of probation in 2007 on an unspecified assault charge in his hometown of Calgary.
U.S. and Canadian authorities were on the hunt Friday for Jenkins, who was charged with the murder of his ex-wife, a 28-year-old former swimsuit model whose strangled and mutilated body was found Saturday stuffed in a suitcase in a trash bin in Southern California.
Veteran reality TV producer Scott Sternberg, who is not associated with "Megan Wants a Millionaire," said the producers - not the networks - are responsible for vetting contestants, and that Fiore's murder is a wake-up call that should put more emphasis on the process.

A $3 million painting by U.S. artist Brice Marden was destroyed during a move from Moscow to New York because of negligence by Lufthansa Cargo and others involved in the move, according to a federal lawsuit.
Marden's "Au Center" came loose in its travel frame while being transported last year, resulting in "a significant amount of paint loss" and the destruction of the painting, said Eliot Greenberg, a lawyer for Gagosian Gallery in New York.
The gallery, which owned the painting, initially sued Lufthansa, Art Crating Inc. and others in New York state court in June, but the case was moved to federal court Friday.
Grammy-winning country music star LeAnn Rimes was involved in a traffic collision in West Los Angeles, authorities said Friday. No injuries were reported.
The 26-year-old singer was questioned by officers as part of an investigation into the Thursday evening incident, police Officer Norma Eisenman said.
No one was injured and Rimes was not arrested, she said.
No further details were provided. The investigation was continuing.
Actor-turned-teacher Tony Danza has been forced to relocate his educational reality TV show from New York to Philadelphia - after school board officials vetoed future episodes of the upcoming series.
The former Taxi star, 58, earned a degree in history education from Iowa's University of Dubuque before launching his acting career.
He recently signed with America's A&E network to spend a year teaching 10th grade English at a Yonkers, New York school - where he shot the pilot for his new show Teach.
However, the city's school board vetoed future episodes, forcing production to move to Philadelphia's Northeast High School, reports People.com.
Traffic noise could be ruining the sex lives of urban frogs by drowning out the seductive croaks of amorous males, an Australian researcher said Friday.
A well-projected and energetic croak is the male frog's most important asset in the quest to attract mates to his pond, Melbourne University ecologist Kirsten Parris said.
But competition from traffic noise in Melbourne could be a reason why frog numbers have declined in Australia's second-largest city since her survey of more than 100 ponds began in 2000, she said.
"If there are a number of different males calling, the one that sounds the best often gets the girl," Parris told The Associated Press. "You have to be pretty clear about your assets if you're a male frog."
John E. Carter, the R&B lead tenor and two-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, died Friday. He was 75.
Carter, who was known for his falsetto, was the last surviving founding member of the Flamingos. The classic doo-wop group gained fame with such hits as "Golden Teardrops" and their reworking of the pop classic "I Only Have Eyes for You."
Carter left the Flamingos for the first time in 1957 to do military service, and left permanently in 1960 to join the Dells, which had been formed in the early 1950s by some of his high school friends from Harvey.
The Dells' 1954 breakout hit, "Oh What A Night," sold more than a million records when it was reissued in 1969 with Carter on falsetto lead. The Dells were also famous for "Stay in My Corner," one of the first R&B hits to run more than six minutes.
The group toured extensively with Dinah Washington, and later with Ray Charles. The Dells also came to the attention of Quincy Jones, who coached them into a more eclectic vocal style, incorporating jazz, soul and Broadway sounds.
The Dells, consisting of Carter, baritone lead Marvin Junior, and backup singers Charles Barksdale, Michael McGill and Verne Allison, served as technical advisers on Robert Townsend's 1991 movie, "The Five Heartbeats," which was loosely based on their careers.
The Dells performed publicly for one of the last times in 2004, when they did an outdoor concert in downtown Chicago to celebrate their induction into the hall of fame.
This picture made available by the National Trust, Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, shows a Duke of Burgundy butterfly at an undisclosed location. the Duke of Burgundy butterfly that is endangered in Britain has made some unexpected gains this summer, conservationists said Wednesday. The wet and cold British weather means the rare Duke of Burgundy butterfly normally reproduces once a year and is confined to the country's southern coast. But conservationists have found evidence that the brown-and-orange butterfly has reproduced twice this year. Matthew Oates, a conservation adviser with the National Trust, said a second brood of the declining species has only been recorded three times since 1893.
