Froma Harrop: Doing Well by Doing Good -- but Better by Doing Bad (Creators Syndicate)
Since 2011, JPMorgan Chase has made an estimated $185 million helping American companies renounce their U.S. citizenship to avoid paying taxes in this country - all the while staying put. We speak of the "inversion" loophole, whereby a company merges with a smaller one in a lower-tax country and then claims to be based there.

The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers are a trio of underground comic strip characters created by the U.S. artist Gilbert Shelton. The Freak Brothers first appeared in The Rag, an underground newspaper published in Austin, Texas, beginning in May 1968; and were regularly reprinted in underground papers around the United States and in other parts of the world. Later their adventures were published in a series of comic books.
The lives of the Freak Brothers revolve around the procurement and enjoyment of recreational drugs, particularly marijuana. None of them has the slightest concern about gainful employment and the only use for money is to procure food and drugs without getting "burned" by unscrupulous dealers or busted by the police. Other storylines involve Fat Freddy's Cat and occasionally a military empire of cockroaches in the kitchen. The stories often satirize the establishment and right-wing politics, and are highly topical with respect to the counterculture era.
The Freak Brothers are not siblings. They are a threesome of freaks (similar to but distinct from the more well-known hippies) from San Francisco. Their names are Phineas Freakears, Fat Freddy Freekowtski and Freewheelin' Franklin (whose surname has not been revealed so far). The trio are anti-heroes, ingesting or smoking large quantities of drugs and consistently defying authority. They are lazy (several storylines revolve around the "horror" of one of the protagonists having to find work) and unreliable-particularly in the case of Fat Freddy.

Having been an innocent child for most of the '70s, this
question forced me to consult hubby Richard, who, no doubt
due to YEARS of drug abuse during his misspent youth,
answered: "Phineas, Fat Freddy and Freewheelin' Franklin?
Weren't they the kids from the 'Fat Albert' gang?". The
Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers may indeed have been an
inspiration for Cosby's artists, because Mushmouth
DEFINITELY looked stoned (and what the fuck is the deal with
Dumb Donald and that hat?), and they undoubtedly were the
impetus which launched Nixon's WAR ON DRUGS in 1971 in a
vain effort to stop the scourge of drug addiction from
corrupting and destroying this great nation's community of
cartoon citizens!
P.S. @ Dale: Is that group grope photo from "Chlamydia: The Musical"?
DJ Useo replied:
The answer is the Fabulous Freak Brothers.
I've been waiting YEARS for a movie version, but it's never been finished.
When I was very small, we'd visit relatives down South.
I came from a large family, & it was my misfortune to be one of those
assigned to stay with my Great Grand-Mother.
She had no idea how to care for kids of our age, & left us alone, bored, & miserable.
One of the few times she tried to care for us, she went down the street & asked a friend if
she could have some of the neighbor kids' comic books to entertain us.
A nice thought, to be sure, but she didn't even take a peak at the comics before she gave them to me.
So, I ended up with a giant stack of hippie-style comics like Zap Comics, Bijou Funnies,
& the Fabulous Freak Brothers! Lol!
I had no idea what sex, drugs, & rock 'n' roll were about, so I didn't like them much, & gave them away.
The next day, a teenage hippie showed up asking for his comics back, but they were long gone by then.
As an adult, living in Austin, I met Gilbert Shelton, the creator of the Freak Brothers.
He came into the business where I worked. ( He brought Wavy Gravy with him )
They were very friendly.
If you want some superbly-drawn, & hilarious comics, pick up some of the Freak Brothers.
You'll fall off your chair laughing.

The two pros, Helen Mirren and Om Puri were great, but this young man is destined for major stardom. Not only was he enough eye-candy to even outshine the food, his acting was perfect for the part. Watch out for this lad.

Artwork from "Calvin and Hobbes" creator Bill Watterson's three-day return to comics has brought more than $74,000 at auction to benefit Parkinson's research.
Dallas-based Heritage Auctions says the three comic strips sold Friday for a combined $74,040 to three collectors, all of whom wish to remain anonymous. Heritage had expected the strips to sell for more than $30,000 combined.
Watterson collaborated with "Pearls Before Swine" cartoonist Stephan Pastis in June after a long absence from the funny pages.
The artwork was sold on behalf of Team Cul de Sac, a charity established in honor of cartoonist Richard Thompson, who has Parkinson's. Proceeds will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

The plot of the Amazon-Hachette battle over ebook prices just acquired a strange literary twist.
Amazon is asking readers to help in its running dispute with Hachette Book Group by emailing Hachette's CEO. But it may have missed the mark when it picked on English writer George Orwell to make its point.
In a message from the Amazon Books Team on a website on Friday evening, Amazon.com Inc reiterated its arguments for cheaper ebooks, and suggested people email Hachette CEO Michael Pietsch. The company published Pietsch's email address and listed key points people might want to make.
In its message, also emailed to writers who publish directly on its Kindle e-readers, Amazon compared the advent of ebooks to the arrival of paperback books in the 1930s. It said many in the literary establishment and book trade were similarly suspicious about cheaper reading and the assault on hardback books. It put Orwell into the anti-paperback camp.
However, as the New York Times pointed out on Saturday, the internet retail giant seems to have misread Orwell, who was famed for his anti-totalitarian views and unlikely to seriously advocate suppressing books.
On Sunday night, have a look at the moon - it will be bigger and brighter than at any other time this year.
The full moon on Sunday is a supermoon - one that is up to 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than a regular full moon.
On average, the moon is 384,000 kilometres away, but it is about 363,000 kilometres away at the closest point, its perigee. And it is around 406,000 kilometres away at its furthest point, its apogee.
Supermoons are moons that take place on the same day as the perigee, and on average, they happen about once every 13½ months.

Some overindulged their zucchini patch. Others didn't bother with that dripping kitchen sink. But now every Monday night in this drought-stricken beach town, dozens of residents who violated their strict rations take a seat at Water School, hoping to get hundreds of thousands of dollars in distressing penalties waived.
Nik Martinelli, a Santa Cruz water-conservation specialist who is up before dawn patrolling for overwatered lawns, launched a recent lesson.
Margaret Hughes nodded grimly. Her $210 water bill came with a $775 fine last month. She drove from her home four hours north of town to face the scolding, even though she had no idea the toilet in a vacant house she inherited had been leaking.
Two hours later, everyone was ready to ace their Water School quiz, identifying the community's sparse water sources, listing ways to conserve water, describing how to use their water meters to check for leaks.
Unlike most cities that have either groundwater, a connection to state water canals, or vast reservoirs, Santa Cruz is among those worst hit by the drought because what makes it special - the town is surrounded by ocean and mountains - also means it relies almost exclusively on storm runoff into a river, creeks and an aging reservoir.
John McAfee, the flamboyant anti-virus software industry pioneer, made a surprise appearance at a computer hackers' conference on Friday evening, where he unveiled a new website to give people a place online to vent their anger.
The one-time millionaire who fled the Central American nation of Belize in 2012 after police sought to question him about the murder of a neighbor said he set up the site for ordinary people to lodge complaints on anything from government corruption to bad consumer products.
The site, called BrownList, carries the motto "It's payback time."
"This taps into anger in a positive way," he said in a brief interview before taking the stage at Def Con, the world's largest conference of computer hackers. "Instead of getting angry and shooting at somebody on the highway, or yelling at your wife, you can log onto the site."

Support for Scottish independence has fallen following a TV debate this week and the campaign to split the United Kingdom will need a dramatic turnaround if it is to win a forthcoming referendum, a poll showed on Saturday.
The Survation poll for the Scottish Daily Mail newspaper said 50 percent of respondents planned to vote against independence in a ballot due on Sept. 18 that will decide whether Scotland breaks its 307-year union with England.
It was the highest level of support for remaining part of the United Kingdom in all Survation polls since February.
By contrast, just 37 percent said they planned to vote for a split while 13 percent said they were undecided. Excluding undecided voters, support for independence stood at 43 percent against 57 percent in favor of the union.

Four Silicon Valley companies including Apple and Google failed to persuade a U.S. judge to sign off on a $324.5 million settlement to resolve a lawsuit by tech workers, who accused the firms of conspiring to avoid poaching each other's employees.
In a ruling on Friday, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California, said the class action settlement was too low, given the strength of the case against the companies. Intel and Adobe were also part of the proposed deal.
There is "substantial and compelling evidence" that late Apple Inc co-founder Steve Jobs "was a, if not the, central figure in the alleged conspiracy," Koh wrote. The judge provided details in evidence of anecdotes involving Jobs and other Valley executives to show why she thought the workers deserved more.
In their 2011 lawsuit, the tech employees said the conspiracy had limited their job mobility and, as a result, kept a lid on salaries. The case has been closely watched because of the possibility of big damages being awarded and for the opportunity to peek into the world of some of America's elite tech firms.
Koh referred to one email exchange which occurred after a Google recruiter solicited an Apple employee. Schmidt told Jobs that the recruiter would be fired. Jobs then forwarded Schmidt's note to a top Apple human resources executive with a smiley face.

Yellowstone National Park may use a helicopter to search for a drone that a tourist crashed into a famous hot spring, amid concerns the device may harm a geothermal feature that is a top draw for visitors, a park official said on Friday.
Although the National Park Service two months ago banned the use of unmanned aircraft, officials at parks in Western states are reporting a rise in the number of the camera-equipped devices buzzing wildlife and tourists and crashing into the scenery.
Yellowstone rangers have been unable to find the drone that sank in Grand Prismatic Spring on Saturday, and park managers are considering a helicopter flyover of the 370-foot diameter spring, park spokesman Al Nash said.
"We can't make any educated decisions about what it might do or how we might retrieve it until we know more," Nash said. "This is truly uncharted territory for us."

Former Manson Family member Bruce Davis, who was sentenced to life in prison for two 1969 murders but was granted parole this year, was ordered on Friday to remain behind bars by California Governor Jerry Brown who rejected the decision to free him.
When the 71-year-old Davis was granted parole by a state board in March, it was uncertain whether he would step out of prison on that vote of confidence in him by the panel, because Brown last year reversed a similar decision.
Davis has been serving a life sentence in a California state prison since his 1972 conviction for the murders of music teacher Gary Hinman, who was stabbed to death in July 1969, and stunt man Donald "Shorty" Shea, who was killed the following month.
Brown, in his review of the case, said he found Davis had still not taken full responsibility for the murders.
Davis was previously granted parole in 2010 but remained incarcerated after that decision was reversed by then-California Governor Arnold $chwarzenegger (R-Family Values).

Inside the small U-Haul rental office in Guthrie, Oklahoma, Tami Boxley routinely deals with something that once was rare: the rattling, booming roll of the earth.
In the last week alone, residents of Guthrie, pop. 10,191, have felt five quakes rock the town a half hour's drive from Oklahoma City.
Since January, Oklahoma has had 292 earthquakes that register a magnitude 3.0 or larger, more than any other state in the continental United States. That's nearly triple the 109 last year. Through 2008, Oklahoma averaged less than two a year.[http://link.reuters.com/vyg62w]
The unprecedented earthquake activity has put Oklahoma in the center of an emerging debate over whether the disposal of wastewater from oil and gas production triggers earthquakes. It has prompted enactment of broad new rules that go into effect Sept. 12.
"The houses are bouncing. It is frightening," said Matt Skinner, spokesman for the Oklahoma Corporations Commission, which regulates oil and gas work in Oklahoma. Skinner's home itself has suffered quake damage.

Everyone seems to be fascinated by the idea of seeing a Google Street View car in person, but what if the car was hurtling straight toward you on a one-way street? According to The Smoking Gun, that's exactly what happened in Little Rock, Arkansas. A Street View driver caused a T-bone collision when he realized he had turned in the wrong direction and made a U-turn going the wrong way on a one-way street.
Google's vehicle sustained significant damage to its front end, but Dylan Case, the 22-year-old victim of the incident, said that his car was totaled. A photograph from a local resident shows that the Street View car lost its front bumper in the wreck as well.
The police report cites the Street View driver, 28-year-old Alexander Spurr, for "careless or prohibited" driving. Case claims that he had a green light and can only imagine that Spurr had a red light when he came back around and ended up slamming into the side of Case's car. Both vehicles ended up being towed at the owners' requests.
Once the wreckage had been cleared, Case went to the hospital and was told he had suffered bruised ribs and whiplash. He expects to miss work for at least three weeks and is planning to take Google to court over the incident.
Henry Stone, a fixture on the R&B and disco scene who was instrumental in the careers Ray Charles, James Brown and KC & the Sunshine Band, has died. He was 93.
Stone, a co-founder of the famed TK Records, died Thursday of natural causes at a Miami-area hospital, the funeral home Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapels confirmed.
Stone opened up a record-distribution business and recording studio in South Florida in 1948 and within a few years recorded his first artist, a pianist-singer from the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind who would later become the legendary Ray Charles.
Stone's hits were on TK Records, which he co-founded with Steve Alaimo in 1972, and similar labels he founded. They included: "Get Down Tonight," ''That's the Way (I Like It)", "Shake, Shake, Shake (Shake Your Booty)", "I'm Your Boogie Man" for KC & the Sunshine Band and "Ring My Bell" for Anita Ward, The Miami Herald reported.
Stone released Otis Williams and the Charms' No. 1 R&B hit, "Heart of Stone", in 1954. He was also instrumental in signing James Brown and the Famous Flames, earning the hit, "Please, Please, Please," which topped the R&B in 1956.
TK went bankrupt in 1981, but Stone pursued his passion with other production companies, finding an off-beat hit in 1990 with novelty act 2 Live Jews and its album, "As Kosher As They Wanna Be", a parody of 2 Live Crew that featured Stone's actor, songwriter-producer son, Joseph Stone.
Stone's love for music started as a teen when he played trumpet while growing up in an orphanage in Pleasantville, New York. During World War II, he served in the Army and played trumpet in a racially integrated band and developed an appreciation of what were called "race records." Three decades later, the biggest payoff of his career came with the racially-integrated KC & the Sunshine Band.
