Rachel Maddow: The Economy
"By focusing on the deficit when we should be running a massive deficit - at wonderfully low interest rates - to put our people to work rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure, we are doing something, in the words of Professor Robert Frank, "unimaginably stupid." Watch. It's simple - if only the Republicans would not keep blocking the smart things that need doing. (And could they please not now shut down the FAA?)"-Andrew Tobias
Jim Hightower: Breaking Corporate Control of Politics
Imagine if a couple of national leaders dared to stand up to the corporate powers that have taken control of government. Imagine if one of them came right out and said, "I [am] fed up of living in a country ruled by lies, cynicism, and greed." And imagine if these leaders arranged for the people of the country to be able to throw out all political parties that "represent oligarch interests or vote in the interests of oligarchs."
"No Regrets: The Life of Edith Piaf" by Carolyn Burke: A review by David Hajdu
With most of the witnesses to Piaf's life gone now, we will never know more than we get from Burke, and I think it is much to her credit that she resists making unfounded inferences from yellowed-page gossip that is now impossible to verify or to dispute. C'est la biographie.
Melting Islands (Inhabitat.com)
"Well, rut-ro, Shaggy-seems like we've flown too close to the sun on this one-Dubai's ambitious World of Islands that were built as part of a luxurious resort are now eroding back into the sea from which they came. Millions of tons of sand were pumped in to form the islands to mimic the world, and as you can see no longer resemble the world so much as… suggesting it. Property assessments are grim. Oh well. I suppose the residents could always buy *real* islands somewhere." - Neatorama
The Great French Post-It Note War of 2011 (Geekosystem.com)
So, you are bored at work. What is there to do? Well, you could decorate the glass walls of your office building with Post-it pictures of your favorite animated characters. This is exactly what employees at Ubisoft Montreuil in France did. But, their neighbors across the street at BNP bank took their Post-it artwork as a bit of a challenge, and started firing back with some window images of their own. Thus, the Great French Post-it War of 2011 was born. Clearly, it spawned an epic rivalry worthy of the likes of Mario and Bowser. Check out the pictures from their Post-it battle ….
6 Dangerous Stunts of the Silent Movie Era (mentalfloss.com)
Silent movie comedy was all about slapstick and sight gags. Slipping on banana peels, falling from moving cars, teetering on high window ledges-audiences loved to see comedians testing the boundaries of gravity. And in an era long before CGI, these amazing feats were performed in real-time, the result of careful planning, physical skill and immense courage.

Steel guitar is a type of guitar and/or the method of playing the instrument. Developed in Hawaii in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a steel guitar is usually positioned horizontally; strings are plucked with one hand, while the other hand changes the pitch of one or more strings with the use of a bar or slide called a Steel (generally made of metal, but also of glass or other materials). The term steel guitar is often mistakenly used to describe any metal body resophonic guitar.

Lt. Dan Choi, a discharged openly gay U.S. Army veteran who has been an outspoken critic of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy takes part in the Gay Pride canal parade in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Saturday Aug. 6, 2011. The Dutch Defense Ministry is sponsoring a boat in the annual festival for the first time this year, underscoring the long-standing policy of accepting of homosexuals in the military, starkly contrasting with the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) policy of the US military.

More than 900 red-lipsticked, redheaded women -- and men -- gathered near a "Vitameatavegamin" sign in the hometown of "I Love Lucy" star Lucille Ball to mark her 100th birthday on Saturday with a world record for most Lucy look-alikes.
Sporting upswept hairdos and blue and white polka dot dresses, the crowd of 915 Lucy Ricardos set to establish the first Guinness world record in her honor. It was all part of the annual Lucy Fest in Jamestown, which drew fans from as far away as Australia to the normally sleepy town of 30,000 people in upstate New York.
Across generational and gender divides, those who love Lucy milled about a downtown plaza under a mural painted with the word "Vitameatavegamin" in three-foot-high letters. For Lucy fans, the well-known tincture made famous on her long-running TV sitcom needs no explanation.
Some revelers recited the word in unison, others sang "Happy Birthday" in honor of what would have been Ball's 100th birthday on August 6.

The FX network is picking up two more seasons of its veteran comedy "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia."
FX president John Landgraf announced Saturday that the series, about slackers running a Philadelphia bar, will be back for an eighth and ninth season, with an option for a 10th season. This makes "Sunny" the longest-running live-action comedy in basic cable history, Landgraf said.
The series will begin airing its seventh season on Sept 15.
FX is also renewing "Louie," starring standup comic Louis C.K., for a third season, and its new comedy, "Wilfred," about a man and his human dog, for a second season.
"Desperate Housewives" will wrap up its run after eight seasons, TheWrap has confirmed.
Viewers will be forced to bid farewell to Wisteria Lane in May 2012, according to an individual with knowledge of the situation.
The end of the chronicle of suburban back-stabbing, intrigue and scandal had been expected to make it to nine seasons, making ABC's decision something of a surprise.
"Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry has already stepped down as the showrunner to develop other programs, although he will serve as a consultant throughout the soap's final season.

Mark Twain jokingly recommended crime as a way of learning morals, so the great American writer might not have been shocked at the woman who on Friday admitted to stealing $1 million from his museum-home.
Donna Gregor, 58, pleaded guilty in Bridgeport, Connecticut to wire fraud and filing a false tax return as part of schemes to embezzle the Mark Twain House and Museum, federal prosecutors said.
Gregor, a longtime employee of the museum dedicated to the 19th century author of Huckleberry Finn, siphoned the money from her employer by fiddling accounts and drawing extra pay to which she was not entitled.
She used the stolen money for "home improvements, theater tickets, dining out, mortgage payments, credit card payments and car payments," the prosecutor's office for Connecticut said.

A New York City woman faces charges that she sent threatening emails and videos to a website dedicated to the French actress Marion Cotillard.
FBI agents say in a court filing that Teresa Yuan sent a series of spooky messages in July that included ramblings about wanting to play Russian Roulette with the actress.
In another video she says she would feel no regret "after it happens" because "that's apparently how it feels to be a killer." On one recording, she hisses and growls at the camera.
Yuan faces a charge of interstate stalking. Her lawyer, Michael Schneider, tells The New York Daily News he wouldn't comment on the case.

Federal criminal investigations into failed mortgage lenders IndyMac Bancorp and New Century Financial Corp have stalled, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.
A third probe, into Washington Mutual Inc (WaMu), has ended with no charges being filed, the Department of Justice said.
Both the IndyMac and Century Financial investigations were essentially dormant, the newspaper said, citing people familiar with the situation. Both probes could still gain new momentum if fresh evidence surfaced, the newspaper said.
The three investigations were among the first to weigh criminal charges against the companies and executives at the heart of the housing crisis, which was in part caused by offering so-called sub-prime loans to people who may not have otherwise qualified for credit.
The Justice Department, in a statement dated on Friday, said its investigation closed after hundreds of interviews and review of millions of documents related to WaMu's operations and subsequent failure. The evidence did not meet the standards for criminal charges, the statement said.

Nigeria's government and oil giant Shell Friday came under heavy pressure following the release of a landmark UN report detailing oil pollution that may require the world's biggest ever clean-up.
The report set out scientific evidence for the first time of devastating pollution in Ogoniland, part of the country's main oil-producing Niger Delta region where Shell and the state petroleum company have operated.
"UNEP believes that oil contamination in Ogoniland has created an environmental crisis of unprecedented proportions," Joseph Alcamo, UN Environment Programme chief scientist, told journalists in London.
Anglo-Dutch Shell was forced to pull out of Ogoniland amid unrest in 1993, though pipelines for its Nigerian joint venture, which includes the state oil company, and other facilities remain there.
Residents and volunteers pull the illuminated float through the wreckage in the tsunami-hit Rikuzentakata city, northeastern Japan, on the eve of a local star festival Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011. The residents will parade Sunday, months after most of 12 floats were swept away due to the March 11 tsunami.
Leona Baldwin's husband saw it first, and she got on the marine radio to alert others in the remote Alaska village of Kivalina that a strange orange goo was sitting on top of the town's harbor.
The news attracted all the townspeople, anxious to get a gander of the phenomenon that covered much of the harbor and then began washing ashore Wednesday.
The next day it rained, and residents found the orange matter floating on top of the rain buckets they use to collect drinking water. It was also found on one roof, leading them to believe whatever it was, it was airborne, too.
By Friday, the orange substance in the lagoon had dissipated or washed out to sea, and what was left on ground had dried to a powdery substance.
Villagers have never seen anything like this before, and elders have never heard any stories passed down from earlier generations about an orange-colored substance coming into town.
