Marc Dion: Non-Weed Smoker's Blues (Creators Syndicate)
As recreational marijuana becomes legal here and there throughout the country, I feel like I'm losing what people saw as one of my good character traits. Despite the fact that I was in high school and college during the 1970s and 1980s, I don't smoke marijuana. Oh, I tried it, but it makes me vaguely nauseated, and it makes me very tired, so it's not much of a party drug for me. All it really does is make me feel like I'm coming down with the flu.
Mark Shields: GOP Congressional Candidates ... on Their Own (Creators Syndicate)
It's a safe bet that when President Donald J. Trump was a younger man, he never read "To Kill A Mockingbird," Harper Lee's American classic about a young child's awakening to racial prejudice in a sleepy little town in the pre-civil rights South. The admirable Atticus Finch teaches his young daughter, Scout, about empathy, saying: "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view … until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."
Froma Harrop: "Trump's Targets: The View From Fifth Avenue" (Creators Syndicate)
This story, told by a former executive at the Better Business Bureau in New York, is a place to start. He was going after the "boiler room" operations of financial con artists. The crooks would call phone numbers across the country offering to sell exotic investments, guaranteeing fabulous returns to whoever answered. The chumps would mail off their life savings, never to see the money again. My friend's frustration extended beyond the scammers to include the scammed. "What can you do for people who would send a check for $50,000 to some voice on the phone?" he asked. Then he shrugged.
Froma Harrop: Democrats Should Move to the Center - of the Country (Creators Syndicate)
This November, Democrats will have contenders up and down the political spectrum. That's fine so long as the candidates fit their district. But when it comes to finding an appealing voice for a national electorate, they should look to the center - the center of the country, that is.
Froma Harrop: Foreigners Boycott Trump's America (Creators Syndicate)
Right after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau played courteous host to Trump at the G-7 meeting, the president flamed him as "very dishonest and weak." […] And so Canadian restaurants are wiping California wines off their menus. Canadians now have a "patriot's guide" to shopping during a trade war with the U.S. And the country's largest private-sector union is running an "I Shop Canada" campaign. Canadians, meanwhile, have been canceling their planned summer vacations in the U.S.
Jonathan Chait: Conservative Shocked to Discover Obama Doesn't Hate White People (NY Mag)
Giving poor people money so they could sit around and never work was what Republicans said was Obama's policy, but it wasn't actually Obama's policy. So successfully did they persuade themselves of their own propaganda that, when coming face-to-face with the actual Obama now, they cannot recognize him.
Jonathan Chait: Trump: Russia Is a Friend, Journalists Are the Enemy (NY Mag)
So, to summarize: Trump met secretly with Vladimir Putin, endorsed his denials of having hacked Democratic emails to help elect Trump, blamed his own country rather than Russian aggression for poor relations, praised Putin's "offer" to interrogate an American diplomat he loathes for having stood up for human rights, and is announcing that American journalists rather than Russia are the true enemy.
What synthetic chemical element, first produced in 1944 as a part of the Manhattan Project, is widely used in commercial ionization chamber smoke detectors?
The Pony Express, a mail service delivering messages, newspapers, and mail, was the West's most direct means of east-west communication before the transcontinental telegraph was established. How long was the Pony Express in operation?
The Pony Express was a mail service delivering messages, newspapers, and mail.
Officially operating as the Leavenworth and Pike's Peak Express Company of 1859, in 1860 it became the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company; this firm was founded by William H. Russell, Alexander Majors, and William B. Waddell, all of whom were notable in the freighting business.
During its 18 months of operation, it reduced the time for messages to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to about 10 days. From April 3, 1860 to October 1861, it became the West's most direct means of east-west communication before the transcontinental telegraph was established (October 24, 1861), and was vital for tying the new state of California with the rest of the United States.

Officially only 18 months, but fast-ish mail delivery to the west was considered & available well before it's official operation.
Dave said:
6 months is my guess. But I see from Wikipedia it was running for 18 months. Supposedly one of the riders employed was a 15 year old "Buffalo" Bill Cody, who years later was a famous entertainer with his wild west show. Cody claimed any number of heroic, ludicrous, or unlikely accomplishments as a Pony Express rider & Army Indian Scout, although it may be safely assumed Cody invented his highly embellished adventures.
Deborah replied:
The Pony Express lasted a mere 18 months.
Welcome back! I've missed you & the page.
That fire in Redding, the Carr Fire, while more than an hour's drive north of us, provides enough smoke that visibility and air quality are quite poor. Reminds me of last October, when fires were just over the ridge from us. Still hotter than normal, too.
Dave in Tucson responded:
Belated Happy Anniversary & glad you're back!
Believe the Pony Express lasted less than a year, that year being 1860.
But as Bart (RIP) used to say: "I don't have cable so what do I know?"
Billy in Cypress said:
I knew it was only a short time, but the actual dates surprised me, only 569 - 570+ days depending on mail in transit. It opened on April 3, 1860 and closed on October 24, 1861.
Steve in Wonderful Sacramento, CA, answered:
The Pony Express was in operation approximately one thousand nine hundred miles long for a period of eighteen months long.

Kevin K. of Washington, DC responded:
Some random answer site on the google machine tells me 18 months and 21 days.
Cal in Vermont replied:
18 short months. It ceased operations 2 days after the completion of the transcontinental telegraph system.

See I knew all the answers to all the questions, I only neglected to see if the page was up. Anyway, the Eastern end of the Pony Express run was St. Joseph, MO, the town where my mother was born. I had a photo of a Pony Express station, that I took myself sometime around 1960. I can't find it.

So far so good on beating cancer for now. I'm doing fine. At the end of the month I'll be 16 months into an 8 month mean lifespan. And yesterday I went on a 7 mile hike and managed to keep up with the hiking group I was with. So, doing something right.
Still waiting for future test results and should see things headed in the right direction. I can say that it's not likely that anything dire happens in the short term so that means that I should have time to make several more attempts at this. So even if it doesn't work the first time there are a lot of variations to try. So if there's bad news it will help me pick the next radiation target.
I have written a "how to" guide for oncologists to perform the treatment that I got. I'm convinced that I'm definitely onto something and whether it works for me or not isn't the definitive test. I know if other people tried this that it would work for some of them, and if they improve it that it will work for a lot of them.
The guide is quite detailed and any doctor reading this can understand the procedure at every level. I also go into detail as to how it works, how I figured it out, and variations and improvements that could be tried to enhance it. I also introduce new ways to look at the problem. There is a lot of room for improvement and I think that doctors reading it will see what I'm talking about and want to build on it. And it's written so that if you're not a doctor you can still follow it. It also has a personal story revealing that I'm the class clown of cancer support group. I give great interviews and I look pretty hot in a lab coat.
So, feel free to read this and see what I'm talking about. But if any of you want to help then pass this around to both doctors and cancer patients. I need some media coverage. I'm looking for as many eyeballs as possible to read these ideas. Even if this isn't the solution, it's definitely on the right track. After all, I did hike 7 miles yesterday. And this hiking group wasn't moving slow. So if this isn't working then, why am I still here?
I also see curing cancer as more of an engineering problem that a medical problem. So if you are good at solving problems and most of what you know about medicine was watching the Dr. House MD TV show, then you're at the level I was at when I started. So anyone can jump in and be part of the solution.
