Eric D. Snider: 11 Movie Titles That Became Part of the Lexicon (Mental Floss)
It's no secret that our language patterns are influenced by the movies we watch (as you no doubt recall from the two-year period when people wouldn't stop talking like Borat). Movies are so influential, in fact, that a number of film titles have become part of the vocabulary even among people who haven't seen the movies in question.
Marc Dion: Where Are the Guys Who Get 'Em Pregnant? (Creators Syndicate)
Let me tell you a couple stories. My father, born into an immigrant community in 1920, was distantly related to a woman who made herbal cures for common illnesses and, as a sideline, had a little discreet abortion business. "She only did it for married women who had too many kids," my father told me. "She wouldn't do it for single girls because she thought a girl who got pregnant before she was married was a whore."
80-odd years of Happy? (YouTube)
Sixty residents and staff at the Diana Isaac Retirement Village in Christchurch, New Zealand, combined all their considerable talents to come up with this tribute, 80-odd years of happy. The residents wanted to show their children and grandchildren just what they're made of!
Martha and the Vandellas (known from 1967 to 1972 as Martha Reeves and the Vandellas) were an American vocal group who found fame in the 1960s with a string of hit singles on Motown's Gordy label. Founded in 1960 by friends Annette Beard, Rosalind Ashford and Gloria Williams, the band eventually included Martha Reeves, who moved up in ranks as lead vocalist of the group after Williams' departure in 1962. The group signed with and eventually recorded all of their singles for Motown's Gordy imprint.
The group's string of hits included "(Love Is Like a) Heat Wave", "Nowhere to Run", "Jimmy Mack", "Bless You" and "Dancing in the Street", the latter song becoming their signature single. During their nine-year run on the charts from 1963 to 1972, Martha and the Vandellas charted over twenty-six hits and recorded in the styles of doo-wop, R&B, pop, blues, rock and roll and soul. Ten Vandellas songs reached the top ten of the Billboard R&B singles chart, including two R&B number ones.
Though they did not receive any Grammys, (they were nominated for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for "(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave", in 1964), Martha and the Vandellas' "Dancing in the Street" was inducted to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. In 1993, the girls were awarded the Pioneer Award at the Rhythm & Blues Foundation. Except for pre-Vandellas member Gloria Williamson, all members of the group were inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, becoming just the second all-female group to be inducted, and were presented with the induction by rock group The B-52's, whose frothy dance music was inspired by the Vandellas.

Lois No Relation To the Reeves In Oregon was first, and correct, with:
Sadly, neither Martha nor The Vandellas ever won a Grammy,
but it's an honor just to be nominated and have your music
ripped off by everybody else, and maybe get to play the
County Fair someday! We had Alice Cooper here at the Douglas
County Fair a few years back. I wept. And now...some dancing
in the streets.
Glad you liked the joke Dale! By the way, know how to make a
tissue dance? Blow some boogie in it! Hahahaha. That one
kills me.

A sad omission.
Though "Dancing in the Streets" is in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Missed yesterday- meant to look up that thing about Martha Mitchell.
Deborah replied:
Martha and the Vandellas were nominated once for a Grammy, and never won a Grammy Award.
Happy Anniversary, Marty! Thanks for your dedication - this reader's been a fan for at least a decade. Well done & carry on!

Another fine day in El Dorado County with a 1300 acre fire burning about seven miles south of DS in and about Sandridge and Plymouth. It's called the Sand Fire. I have friends that live out there and most of them have been evacuated. Zoomed right up the Consumnes river Basin.
Oh, by the way, another Happy Anniversary, and Happy Birthday Mick Jagger!
Martha and the Vandellas never won a Grammy, but "Dancing in the Street" was inducted to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to

Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is
overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received.

Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist on Friday delivered the perfect response to Republicans who claim they lack the scientific background to express an opinion as to whether man-made climate change is real.
"I'm not a scientist either, but I can use my brain, and I can talk to one," Crist said Friday at a Florida State University presentation on greenhouse gases and rising sea levels, according to SaintPetersBlog.
The claim is a common refrain in the Republican Party. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) explained in 2012 that, while he "wasn't a scientist, man," he believed the age of Earth was "one of the great mysteries." House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) similarly said earlier this year that he was "not qualified to debate the science over climate change." And Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) also used the line when asked whether he was worried that rising sea levels posed a threat to his coastal home.
Crist, who is a former Republican, currently leads Scott 45 percent to 40 percent in Florida's hotly contested governor's race, according to a new Quinnipiac University survey.

Susan Sarandon was discussing the May-December romance in her upcoming film "The Last of Robin Hood," when she was asked about filmmaker Woody Allen's penchant for showing similar romances on screen. As it turns out, the actress was far more concerned with his off-camera lifestyle.
"I have issues with Woody Allen," the actress told The Daily Beast. "I think he really tore that family apart in a way that was horrible, and hasn't really dealt with the aftermath."
In 1992, Mia Farrow's 7-year-old daughter accused Allen of molesting her. Soon thereafter, it was revealed that the director was carrying on a secret affair with Mia Farrow's adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn. Allen subsequently married Previn in 1997.
"He's always had a reputation for being with younger girls-I mean younger girls. And also, that young woman [Soon-Yi] was very vulnerable, and I think it was very hard for the siblings, and certainly for Mia [Farrow.] You just don't go there. You don't go there."
Media reports say the children of Casey Kasem are almost certain the remains of the radio personality are at a Montreal funeral home.
Fox News quotes a spokesman for Kasem's three children who says they are adamant that their father had no connection to Montreal and to their knowledge had never been there before.
Fox says the spokesman added the children believe there is a possibility that Kasem's wife Jean has some link to Montreal.
The New York Daily News carried a similar story, largely attributing the information to a private investigator who said he did some work for Kasem's eldest daughter Kerri Kasem.
The childrens' spokesperson told Fox News they are "90 per cent" sure their father's body is in Montreal.

A federal judge on Friday dismissed a Wyoming man's claims that an aircraft recovery group secretly found wreckage of aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart's missing airplane in the South Pacific but kept it quiet so it could continue raising funds for the search.
District Judge Scott Skavdahl dismissed the lawsuit that Timothy Mellon filed last year against the Pennsylvania-based International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery and its executive director, Richard E. Gillespie.
Mellon claimed the group found Earhart's Lockheed Electra in 2010 but kept it secret to collect $1 million from him for the search. He is the son of the late philanthropist Paul Mellon.
The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery has staged repeated expeditions to look for her plane, narrowing its search most recently to the waters around the Kiribati atoll of Nikumaroro, about 1,800 miles south of Hawaii.
In response to Idaho Native Americans canceling one of his performances, Ted Nugent displayed the behavior that caused the tribe to do so in the first place.
Nugent had been scheduled to perform a concert at Couer D'Alene Casino in Worley, Idaho on Aug. 4, but it was canceled after tribal officials were made aware of the racism Nugent has spewed over the years. The conservative rocker didn't take the news very well, of course, and went on a disgusting rant during an interview with Gannett Wisconsin Media in which he called those who canceled the concert "unclean vermin" who aren't real people.
"I take it as a badge of honor that such unclean vermin are upset by me and my positive energy," Nugent hatefully said. "By all indicators, I don't think they actually qualify as people, but there has always been a lunatic fringe of hateful, rotten, dishonest people that hate happy, successful people."
To be blunt, it sounds like Nugent is talking about himself considering the racist remarks he has made about President Obama in recent years. The Idaho Native Americans who made the decision to cancel the concert did so precisely because of how hateful, dishonest, and rotten 'The Motor City Madman' is. We're talking about a man who crapped his pants to avoid serving in Vietnam, a man who married a teen girl he was the legal guardian of just so he could have sex with her, a man who has called for the execution of Democrats and the President of the United States, and a man who has made racist comment after racist comment.

When Natalie Holloway went missing in 2005, most Americans couldn't turn on the television without hearing about the Alabama teen's disappearance. The whole ordeal seemed straight out of a Hollywood screenplay. A beautiful, blond, small-town girl celebrating her high school graduation in Aruba had vanished without a trace, leaving unanswered questions in her wake.
The teen's case became a media sensation, with international law enforcement agencies joining the search. Holloway's body hasn't been found, nor her killers brought to justice, but her story has been heard all around the world. The same can't be said for the hundreds of thousands of others who go missing ever year, especially if they are people of color.
According to the National Crime Information Center, 661,593 people were reported missing in 2012. Forty percent of those, 265,000 individuals, were people of color. Of that number, African Americans comprised 85 percent. Despite the shocking number of minorities who vanish each year, their stories garner less than a fifth of the media coverage of white victims. That has inspired Natalie Wilson and her sister-in-law Derrica Wilson to act.
A young lady named Tamika Houston went missing from Spartanburg, S.C., which is Derrica Wilson's hometown. "We read about her family and how they struggled to get any type of media coverage," says Natalie Wilson, who cofounded the Black & Missing Foundation in 2008 to help raise awareness and locate victims of color.
Houston disappeared a few days before Holloway, but her family was unable to get her case on the national media radar. The Wilsons decided to look into why Houston's family was having such a difficult time spreading the word. What they found has launched a movement to raise awareness around missing people of color and help them receive the media coverage their cases so desperately need.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Princess) is worried about dysfunction in Congress, but he's placing the blame for inaction squarely at the feet of Democrats in Washington.
"It should embarrass all of us, and it's the result of a deliberate partisan decision," the Texas Republican said in an interview scheduled to air on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday.
For Cruz, the problem is a detached administration and an unwilling Senate Democratic Caucus.

The news and entertainment website BuzzFeed has fired the writer Benny Johnson after its editors said they found he plagiarized others' work 41 times.
BuzzFeed editor Ben Smith in a note late on Friday called writer Benny Johnson "a creative force" at his best, but said a review of more than 500 posts revealed dozens of instances where he copied sentences and phrases verbatim from other websites.
Smith said the plagiarism on the seven-year-old site was brought to light this week by Twitter users.
Johnson, whose eclectic range of posts with attribution issues cited by BuzzFeed included items on miracle babies, things that are definitely bigger in Texas, and how to avoid eating horse meat, apologized via Twitter on Saturday.

We've all heard of the natural doomsday events caused by volcanoes and giant asteroids that wiped out most of the world's flora and fauna millions of years ago. Now scientists are warning we may be poised for the next great wave of extinctions, but this time humans may trigger the apocalypse.
In a series of sobering studies published in the Science journal this week, scientists are cautioning that we may be at a tipping point in terms of a potential catastrophic loss of the world's biodiversity.
They are pointing to the decline of some 320 vertebrates that live on land in just the last 500 years. Populations of many major large-sized species, like elephants and polar bears, are at the greatest risks currently, with their numbers nose-diving by 25 per cent. In fact around 16 to 33 per cent of all vertebrate species are considered threatened or endangered.
The situation for invertebrates, like insects and worms, is even more worrisome: in just the last four decades we've seen a decline of about 45 per cent in their global abundance. These tiny creatures, while not as glamorous, are the backbone of entire ecosystems, say researchers, and their loss can signal the eventual breakdown of the entire system.
Making matters worse, increasing human populations lead to habitat loss. Animals will soon be running out of places to hide from the growing numbers of hunters and poachers. One of the studies focused on the cascading effects of the removal of the larger species from ecosystems. Predation rates are found to drop while disease-carrying vermin numbers increase.

Giant anteaters in Brazil have killed two hunters in separate incidents, raising concerns about the animals' loss of habitat and the growing risk of dangerous encounters with people, researchers said.
The long-nosed, hairy mammals are not typically aggressive toward people and are considered a vulnerable species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), largely due to deforestation and human settlements that encroach on their territory.
The case studies of two fatal attacks by giant anteaters were described in the journal Wilderness and Environmental Medicine, which released the paper online this month, ahead of its publication in the December print issue.
"Both were farmers, were hunting and were attacked by wounded or cornered animals," lead author Vidal Haddad of the Botucatu School of Medicine at Sao Paulo State University told AFP.
The grave of King Richard III, immortalised by Shakespeare as one of history's great villains, was opened up to the public on Saturday in central England.
The remains of the infamous ruler were found in 2012 under a car park in the city of Leicester.
Around a hundred visitors were on hand to watch city mayor Peter Soulsby cut the ribbon on the £4 million ($6.8 million, 5 million euro) new visitor centre at the discovery site.
Early arrivals at the building, in an abandoned school close to Richard's grave, were able to examine a replica of his skeleton made using a 3D printer.
Descendants of the ill-famed king had fought for his skeleton to be buried in York Minster, in the northern city that gave its name to Richard's royal house.
