Paul Krugman: Will Fear Strike Out? (NY Times Blog)
If you want to feel good about the state of America, you could do a lot worse than what I did this morning: take a run in Riverside Park. There are people of all ages, and, yes, all races exercising, strolling hand in hand, playing with their dogs, kicking soccer balls and throwing Frisbees. There are a few homeless people, but the overall atmosphere is friendly - New Yorkers tend to be rushed, but they're not nasty - and, well, nice.

I think this may be when black and white in America finally have it out, when we finish the race war that began at the end of the Civil War. There are people on both sides who want it, or who think they want it, or who think it will make them heroes, and those people have guns.

Landmark 600th Episode
'The Simpsons'
The Simpsons continues to make history as the longest-running scripted television series, hitting the incredible milestone of 600 episodes in its upcoming season.
The Fox animated series returns for season 27 in the fall, and during the show's Comic-Con panel Saturday, executive producer Al Jean revealed that the landmark 600th episode - airing Oct. 16 - will be its annual Halloween-themed "Treehouse of Horror 27."
"At the beginning of the episode, we have a Hunger Games parody," Jean said. "You may see Maggie dressed up covered in guns. Guest stars in that episode are Sarah Silverman, Drew Carey and Kelsey Grammer."
But that wasn't the only announcement he had to make to kick off the panel, which also featured a pair of videos - including one skewering "bad" shows that have come and gone during the history of The Simpsons.
Jean also revealed a roster of guest stars set to return this season, including Patton Oswalt, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Allison Janney, the stars of Showtime's Master of Sex, Matt Leinart and world-chess champion Magnus Carlsen.

Launching English Language Digital Streaming Service
Al Jazeera
Al Jazeera Media Network is preparing to make its English language international news channel video content digitally available to U.S. viewers again, according to a July 21 email sent to employees obtained by Reuters.
The move comes almost three months after it shut down its U.S. cable television network, Al Jazeera America, citing economic challenges in the U.S. media market.
Al Jazeera English reaches more than 305 million households in over 160 countries. But U.S. viewers could not access its live stream coverage.
Al Jazeera English is in talks with cable carriers that carried the now defunct Al Jazeera America to make its live video stream available in the U.S. starting in September, according to the email from Giles Trendle, acting managing director of Al Jazeera English and director of programs.

'Rent Men'
From lonely pensioners to Japanese schoolgirls with shattered dreams, Takanobu Nishimoto and his crew of middle-aged men will lend an ear to clients who would never dream of spilling their guts to a therapist or worse, their families.
Anyone in need of company can sign up to his online service to rent an "ossan" -- a man aged between 45 and 55 -- for 1,000 yen ($10) an hour.
"For me, the service is a hobby more than anything," says Nishimoto, who first came up with the concept four years ago and who now has a growing network of some 60 men across Japan.
"The initial idea was to improve the image of guys my age, people who might not be spring chickens anymore and not taken so seriously."
And while the 48-year-old professional fashion coordinator is used to renting himself out, he insists conversation is all he offers to between 30 and 40 clients a month, roughly 70 percent of whom are women.

Russian Balloonist Lands Safely
Australia
A cold and exhausted 65-year-old Russian balloonist came back to Earth with a bruising thud in the Australian Outback on Saturday after claiming a new record by flying solo around the world nonstop in 11 days, officials said.
Fedor Konyukhov landed 160 kilometers (100 miles) east of Northam, where he started his journey on July 12, about three hours after he flew over the same town on his return, flight coordinator John Wallington said.
Konyukhov's gondola - a carbon box 2 meters (6 feet, 7 inches) high, 2 meters long and 1.8 meters (5 feet, 11 inches) wide - bounced twice over 200 meters (yards) in an empty field and tipped on its side before the support crew grabbed it to prevent the deflating balloon from dragging it farther, crew member Steve Griffin said.
Video of the landing showed Konyukhov smiling but silent as he emerged from the gondola. He stroked his bearded left cheek and wiped his eyes as he was hugged and cheered by supporters.
Konyukhov demonstrated precision navigation of his 56-meter (184-foot) -tall helium and hot-air balloon by returning to Australia directly over the west coast city of Perth, then over the airfield at Northam, 96 kilometers (60 miles) to the east by road.

Judge Rejects Bid To Toss Lawsuit
Trump University
A U.S. judge on Friday tentatively rejected Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's bid to dismiss a lawsuit by Trump University students who said they were defrauded through its real-estate seminars.
U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel in San Diego told a hearing he would take under consideration arguments on both sides in the case and issue a formal written ruling in the coming weeks.
The lawsuit, one of at least three over the defunct Trump University, was filed on behalf of students who paid up to $35,000 to learn Trump's real estate investing "secrets" from his "hand-picked" instructors.
The cases against Trump University have regularly cropped up during the presidential campaign and Trump was roundly criticized in May when he accused Curiel, who is of Mexican descent, of being biased against him because of the candidate's pledge to build a border wall between the United States and Mexico.
Curiel, who was born in Indiana, is presiding over two of the cases, with one set for trial in late November. A separate lawsuit by New York's attorney general is pending in that state.

Governor Denies Parole
Jerry Brown
California Gov. Jerry Brown denied parole Friday for Leslie Van Houten, the youngest follower of murderous cult leader Charles Manson who is serving a life sentence for killing a wealthy grocer and his wife more than 40 years ago.
Brown overturned the recommendation of a parole board that found Van Houten was no-longer the violent young woman who committed a gruesome murder and was now fit for release. She has completed college degrees and been a model inmate.
The Democratic governor acknowledged her success in prison and her youth at the time of the murders, but he wrote in his decision that she failed to explain how she transformed from an upstanding teen to a killer.
Van Houten, 66, participated in the killings of Leno La Bianca and his wife, Rosemary, a day after other so-called "Manson family" members murdered pregnant actress Sharon Tate and four others in 1969. Van Houten did not participate in the Tate killings. The crimes and the trials that followed fascinated the world and became tabloid fodder.
At 19, Van Houten was the youngest Manson follower to take part in the killings after she joined the cult in the 1960s.

Wildfires
California
Wildfires burned out of control Saturday in mountains north of Los Angeles and near Big Sur on California's scenic Central Coast, posing a threat to 2,000 homes and a sanctuary for exotic animals which was being evacuated, authorities said.
Southern California firefighters toiled in another day of triple-digit heat from a dome of high pressure over the region, and while Central Coast temperatures were more moderate, conditions included winds and low humidity.
Some 400 animals were being evacuated from the Wildlife Waystation, a nonprofit sanctuary for rescued exotic creatures within the national forest.
The sanctuary's Facebook page appealed for donations of flatbed and enclosed trucks as well as an air-conditioned warehouse to house the animals.
Over many years, the sanctuary has cared for thousands of animals ranging from lions and tigers to primates and exotic birds.

Sea Lions
A warming ocean is taking its toll on California's popular and playful sea lions for a fourth straight year, with scientists now reporting lower birth rates depleting the population, and masses of young animals still washing up starving and stranded on beaches.
More than 2,000 emaciated California sea lions, mostly pups and juveniles, have been found beached dead and dying along the state's southern and central coasts since January, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
That is over twice the average number of strandings considered normal, although it is about half as many as the record 4,000 documented strandings that alarmed the public during the first six months of last year.
NOAA biologists believe declining births may account for the year-to-year reduction in mass strandings. Both trends are attributed to warming ocean temperatures along the Pacific Coast that have disrupted the marine mammals' food supply of sardines, anchovy and squid.
The phenomenon has no doubt put a dent in sea lion numbers, estimated at about 300,000 animals before beachings began to spike in 2013. The overall toll taken on the population has yet to be calculated.

Hid Mansion Inside A Shed
Alan Yeomans
A businessman who built a £1.2m six-bedroomed mansion then hid it in a farm shed has been jailed.
Alan Yeomans, 61, declared himself bankrupt but ran three companies to launder money from growing and dealing cannabis.
The businessman told officials he was living in a shed in his mother's garden and owned just £300 worth of furniture and a £30 watch.
When police raided the property they discovered an Aladdin's cave including a £10,000 Rolex watch and antiques and oil paintings worth around £83,250, as well as designer shoes and cannabis plants stashed in a secret room behind an oil painting of Elizabethan statesman Robert Cecil.
An outbuilding at the property in Yeaveley, near Ashbourne, Derbyshire, was also used as a cannabis factory.
