Re: Port Chicago

From Michelle V

During the last week, the anniversary of July 17, 1944, has passed w/o much, if any, notice. That was the date of the Port Chicaco, CA, disaster.

The worst homeland debacle ever to happen upon American soil during war-time, and the fact that most of the decedents were black has been largely glossed over, ignored, and given the same sort of treatment that the USS Indianapolis injustice had been until the Florida boy who'd recently watched ''Jaws'' decided to rectify.

Port Chicago was part of what has since been re-named Mare Island, in the north-east portion of San Francisco Bay. In the early to middle stages of WWII, it was a considerable hub for war-ships bound for the Pacific theater to be loaded with munitions. The vast majority of the munitions-loaders were black; -- in keeping with the segregated military of the time ... blacks were the ''grunts'', while the officers were white.

During the night of July 17, 1944, a tremendous explosion rent two docked ships being loaded at the time, as were the barracks housing the remainder of the 300 men not on duty at that time. Shards of men, ships, and docks were all that remained from the initial explosion. Close to 400 men died.

During the immediate aftermath, not only was no blame was assigned, but nothing was done to assure the safety of the remaining workers who subsequently went on strike for those assurances, only to be tried for mutiny.

What soon became apparent, was the more than possible conclusion that a nuclear device was the culprit for the host of deaths, since even the officers had never seen an explosion of that type, and our aim at the time was to get one within striking-distance of Japan. Up until that time, secrecy over the A-bomb was a given in military circles, so even if a prototype, the loaders had no clue as to its' lethal capabilities. The military has never come clean over whether the explosion was nuclear in origin, but much of what has come to light since suggests that it was. The ones eventually loaded became those destined for Hiroshima/Nagasaki.

The NAACP, along with a host of others, who've studied and analyzed this incident in the years since have come to the conclusion that justice was never given to the so-called ''mutineers''. Add me to the Florida kid as just a person who wishes to see honor done ...

In The Chaos Household

Last Night

This site had the 150,000 hit yesterday!

Feeding some bachelor boys tomorrow. Yep, gonna incinerate something on the grill. Gonna make some mac salad, maybe cole slaw, too. Probably should try to think of something to do with all the tomatoes.

Came across the transcript of 'Donahue' from last Thursday when Adam's Apple Annie visited. Have posted it here. Phil did good.

Tonight, Sunday, as is tradition, CBS starts the night with '60 Minutes', then follows with a rerun 'Touched By An Angle', and then the movie 'Emma's Wish'.

NBC starts the evening with a 2-hour 'Dateline', then follows with a rerun of 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent' and then a fresh 'Crime & Punishment'.

ABC starts the night with the movie 'Babe: Pig In The City', and then regurgitates the made-for-tv version of 'The Shining', part 1. (redrum, redrum)

The WB has 2 reruns of 'For Your Love', then a rerun of 'Charmed', followed by a rerun of 'Angel'.

Faux starts the night with 2 hours of 'Simpsons' reruns, then a rerun 'Malcolm', and a rerun '30 Seconds To Fame'.

UPN the weekly rerun of the rerun of 'Enterprise', and then an episode of 'Stargate SG-1'.

Anyone have any opinions?

Or reviews?

Knighthood Was Held Back

Charlie Chaplin

Britain postponed knighting Charlie Chaplin for nearly 20 years because of his romantic escapades and his politics, according to secret documents unsealed Saturday.

Chaplin, now regarded as one of the greatest silent film directors and actors, was initially put forward for the honor in 1956 but did not receive it until 1975.

The documents released by the Public Records Office show that the British government was wary of acknowledging the star because he had become reviled by some Americans as a communist sympathizer and a man of questionable morals.

It was only after Scottish businessman Fergus Horsburgh wrote to Queen Elizabeth II in January 1972 from his home in Canada urging an honor for Chaplin that a knighthood became likely.

In his letter, Horsburgh also made a case for the novelist P.G. Wodehouse, whom some authorities considered trying for treason after he agreed to make a broadcast from Germany to the American and British people during World War II.

Chaplin finally received his knighthood in 1975, two years before his death at age 78 on Christmas Day in 1977. Wodehouse was honored the same year as Chaplin and died 45 days later, at age 93.

For a lot more, Charlie Chaplin

Michael Jackson, Sony & A Charity Single

'Music Fighters'

The Japanese owner of the rights to an all-star charity single aimed at raising millions for victims of the Sept. 11 attacks says Michael Jackson and Sony Music Entertainment seemed to be blocking its release.

The single is said to have brought together Ricky Martin, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and other stars to raise money for victims' families and survivors of the attacks on New York and Washington.

But the single fell into limbo several months ago after Jackson cut ties with its executive producer after being told the producer was involved in pornography, Jackson's publicist said last week.

In a written statement received by Reuters Saturday, Yasumi Takeuchi, president of Tokyo-based Music Fighters, said his company had bought the rights to the all-star single "What More Can I Give," in the hope of releasing it to coincide with a proposed Jackson tour of Japan. That tour appears to be in doubt.

Sony Music told Music Fighters that they would not be releasing the single themselves because of their ongoing dispute with Jackson, Takeuchi said.

Jackson and Sony Music are locked in a feud over his accusations of racism at the company, and the poor performance of his latest album, "Invincible."

Well-Travelled Kitty

Ozzy, The Cat

A British couple are laying claim to the best-travelled pet in the world after their cat hid in the hold of a passenger jet and clocked up 63,000 miles (100,000 km).

Newspapers reported on Friday that "Ozzy" was loaded on to a British Airways flight from Qatar to London in a plastic cage, but escaped and hid in the hold, where he huddled for ten days and ten return flights.

The feline flyer's owners Jonathan Boyd and Katie Deacon gave up their pet for lost, but were shocked when British Airways staff contacted them to say he was found safe but scared, thin and hungry.

Globe-trotting Ozzy had made the 3,150-mile (5,000-km) seven-hour trip to Qatar and back 10 times.

"We had given up hope of ever seeing him again," Boyd told the Sun Newspaper.

The Sun said the cat was being nursed back to health while serving his six-month's quarantine.

''It's Reno Time''

'Janet Reno's Dance Party'

Under flashing lights and a disco ball, Janet Reno put on her dancing shoes Friday night, energizing her campaign with a dance party.

Reno welcomed fans and voters to "Janet Reno's Dance Party" at a trendy nightclub, reliving the famous "Saturday Night Live" skit that parodied her days as attorney general.

Wearing a simple black dress, Reno danced with club co-owner Gerry Kelly as red and white balloons bounced on their heads. The party was based on her January 2001 appearance on NBC's "Saturday Night Live."

The fund-raiser was billed as a way to attract young people in her campaign to unseat Republican Gov. Jeb Bush. Polls show Reno leading Tampa lawyer Bill McBride in the Democratic primary but trailing the president's brother by double-digits.

Reno, who prefers country icons Johnny Cash and Hank Williams to house music, often talks about the SNL skit in speeches. Campaign supporters say it shows that Reno is a down-to-earth person who doesn't take herself too seriously.

The $25-per-person event was held at Level, a popular hangout for celebrities and the assorted mix of youth and glamour who converge on Miami's South Beach to party.

Officials said 1,500 tickets were sold, just shy of a capacity crowd.

Organisers Deny Pagan Undertones

The WickerMan Festival

It was 30 years ago when police sergeant Howie met a sticky end, becoming a human sacrifice in the cult horror movie The Wicker Man.

The Wickerman Festival, a two-day event staged on farmland in Dundrennan, near Kircudbright, is set to attract up to 5,000 fans of the 1973 movie in which the policeman, played by Edward Woodward, investigates the fictitious pagan island of Summerisle.

But the festival, which got underway last night with the torching of a human effigy, has been dogged by complaints from residents worried about noise, pollution, and pagan undertones. More than 70 locals expressed fears over the £20-a-head event, which was abandoned last year because of the foot-and-mouth crisis.

As well as burning effigies, visitors will be treated to music from Spear of Destiny and punk band Stiff Little Fingers.

Jamie Gilroy, who owns the farm with his wife, Patsy, said: "We were very relieved at the court decision. I am no expert on religion, but many aspects of paganism are quite similar to Christianity so I don't see a problem with that aspect.

"I don't want to disservice my neighbours, but I am doing my best to bring some money into the local area, which we desperately need.

The tradition of the burning wicker man has its roots in early pagan culture. When Julius Caesar visited Britain 2,000 years ago he wrote about the religious customs of the people. In one ceremony, young men and women were burned alive inside huge wickerwork cages built in the shape of gigantic human beings.

Anna In Europe

I had to say, well, most people in Croatia think that the biggest news of the last week was the Prime Minister resigning and the fall of the soc-liberal Government. But the Prime Minister stays the same (thanks to the President) and they'll make up a new government. Certainly, all of this will happen in a time shorter than it is needed to blot out many people's prejudices. For instance, most Croats think that you get AIDS when you touch a homosexual (although the bio-mother of those two girls was an addict who probably got the virus by sharing a needle somewhere abroad). They are not to be blamed for that, with such a low rate of infected people in Croatia.

However, two weekends ago there was the first gay parade in Zagreb, where many Croatian politicians and famous people showed up to give their support to homosexuals. It was also surprising to see ordinary passers-by cheering and supporting them, showing that they have really caught up with changes in societies worldwide and freely got rid of prejudices that ruled only a generation ago (only 30 years ago homosexuality was lawfully prosecuted in former Yugoslavia). But there is also a bad ugly dragon as in most fairytales. The gay procession was surrounded by three rows of policemen, yet the bunch of skinheads managed to beat the hell out of many participants of this parade. Some of the victims were homosexuals, but there were also heterosexual supporters and some of them even renowned people.

The witnesses say that in some cases policemen were just laughing while the skinheads were kicking people around, although their own Minister was cheering for gays some meters away. The worst, however, happened just after the parade. Groups of skinheads went to several places they suspected gays, or any other people of "liberal" opinion might be. On their way they injured a heterosexual couple walking down the street. Then they raided toward a renowned multimedial club and Internet café where they knew "liberal" and "alternative" lot was "hanging out". They molested and injured the people working there and those who were using the Internet or just listening to music.

It was quite shocking for me to hear about it since I used to hang out in that club every day myself, before I went abroad. If I was still in Zagreb, and went to that club to check my e-mail on that day my parents would have needed to pick me up from a hospital. And what for? I'm rather straight but maybe some slick-head with a boxer has seen a hot girl in the main square that day and found out she was a transvestite. And, man, that pissed him off!

In the end, maybe the news about the fall of the Government ARE the biggest for the last week. Because, if we'll have polls before time - and we will - I won't be surprised if people will, because the left-winged Government failed, choose again the right-winged. And that will be quite the same as having Bush on top of you, only that in this case the new Ministers would openly cheer for skinheads on some future gay parade.

~~ Anna

Thanks, again, Anna

In Memory

Royden "Chuch" Magee

The Rolling Stones said on Friday they were deeply saddened by the sudden death of their crew chief during rehearsals for the legendary rockers' upcoming world tour.

Royden "Chuch" Magee, 54, the band's head crew chief, had worked with the band for 30 years. He collapsed and died late on Thursday night.

"He took ill during rehearsals in Toronto displaying symptoms of a heart attack," the band said in a statement on their Web site. "The Rolling Stones are deeply saddened by (his) loss."

The band has been rehearsing, under tight security, at a Toronto school. They were previously in Toronto to rehearse for their Voodoo Lounge tour in 1994 and the Bridges to Babylon tour in 1997.

The veteran British rockers' world tour -- their first in three years -- begins in Boston in September and coincides with the Stones' first public performance at London's Marquee Club in 1962, although the band had a different line-up then.
