''Monk''
By Michelle V
I seldom have the time to devote even an hour for new-spun offerings from cable channels, much less two, but the double-delight of watching two great sets of acting chops in Tony Shalhoub and Ted Levine in the new USA channel pilot for "Monk" was simply a joy.
Tony Shalhoub is the title "Adrian Monk"; -- a shell-shocked survivor of his wifes' murder 4 years prior to the time we meet him at his therapists' office. His former career as a police detective has been sidelined due to his obsessive-compulsive behavior since that event, and the guy is sometimes lost between his brilliance as a crime-solver and the OCD that cripples his abilities --- many times to hilarious comic effect. He fears germs, heights, spaces and milk!
His old-time skills come into play when he's grudgingly asked by his old watch-commander (Ted Levine), to join an investigation into an apparent political assassination, turning hoops all over the place for the viewer. Bitty Schram also contributes immensely as the trodden-upon assistant to our poor, fear-ridden detective.
Set in San Francisco, the most beautiful of cities, we are given that town as a surrogate character that fits most nicely into the dynamics of the rest of the cast, and direction couldn't've been more superb; -- despite the 8+ minutes of commercial breaks inserted at least ten times.
Tony and Ted met and hit a tremendous mark, to flavor and nuance every weird turn.
Give this one a rah-rah -- it is worth your time.
Michelle V
Thanks, Michelle! Tony Shaloub is a wonderful actor. Remember his ''X-Files'' episode about the man & his shadow? First remember seeing him in the tv-show ''Wings'', where he shone. Will make a point to watch this show. Thanks.

Take a look at the red ink on the balance sheets
Fatslice of corporate America - bankrupt for years
Dollar falling -insiders dumping
Everyone makes mistakes - nobody's perfect
Your sister and brother - your mom and dad
Everyone likeme and you

Last Night
Worked on the Links page for a while. It needed updating badly.
The kid is camping out in the yard again tonight. Kind of cool having all the tv remotes to myself...LOL
Got company coming for dinner on Sunday. Gonna incinerate a roast on the grill this time. Nothing like having company & experimenting with cooking techniques.
Tonight, Sunday, as is tradition, CBS opens the night with '60 Minutes', and then follows with a rerun of 'Touched By An Angle'. Tonight's rerun movie is 'Holy Joe'.
NBC has 'Dateline', a rerun of 'Weakest Link', a rerun 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent', and then a fresh 'Crime & Punishment'.
ABC starts the night with the movie 'Cadet Kelly', and follows with reruns of 'Alias' and 'The Practice'.
The WB has 2 reruns of 'For Your Love', then reruns of 'Charmed' and 'Angel'.
Faux dumps the night and has the rerun of the movie 'Jerry Maguire'.
UPN has the weekly rerun of 'Enterprise', and then a rerun of 'Stargate SG-1'.
TNT debuts a tv-movie, 'Door To Door' that sounds horribly mawkish, but, it stars William H. Macy. That alone makes it worth checking out.
The hot ticket tonight is 'Robin - Live On Broadway' on HBO, at 9pm (edt).
Anyone have any opinions?
Or reviews?

Lost Simon & Garfunkel
From Wren
A missing chapter in Simon & Garfunkel's
rich musical history will be revealed on Tuesday, July 16, when
Columbia/Legacy releases "Live From New York City 1967." The 19-track disc
was recorded at Lincoln Center in Manhattan on January 22, 1967, and has
never before been officially released as a concert album. Its debut will
mark the only official Simon & Garfunkel live album recorded in the '60s,
the decade in which the duo rose to worldwide prominence.
The concert features Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel in an acoustic setting,
performing songs from the three albums they had released up to that date:
"Wednesday Morning 3 AM," "The Sounds Of Silence," and "Parsley, Sage,
Rosemary and Thyme." A number of rarities feature on the disc, including "A
Church Is Burning," from "The Paul Simon Songbook," the solo album he
recorded in early 1965 that has never been issued in the U.S. Also included
is "You Don't Know Where Your Interest Lies" which later appeared as the
b-side to their summer 1967 single "Fakin' It."
Every stage of the development of "Live From New York City 1967" has been
completed under the supervision of Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, and their
long-time co-producer and engineer Roy Halee. The complete track listing
for the disc: "He Was My Brother," "Leaves That Are Green," "Sparrow,"
"Homeward Bound," "You Don't Know Where You're Interest Lies," "A Most
Peculiar Man," "59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)," The Dangling
Conversation," "Richard Cory," "A Hazy Shade Of Winter," "Benedictus,"
"Blessed," "A Poem On The Underground Wall," "Anji," "I Am A Rock," "The
Sound Of Silence," "For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her," "A Church Is
Burning," and "Wednesday Morning 3 AM."

Children, AIDS & Croatia
From Anna H
The first HIV-positive children in Croatia, the two girls adopted by a
couple that was tutored on living with HIV-positive people, have problems
with education. The elder girl, who is eight, is still not attending any
school (in Croatia, the age for a child to start the primary schooling is
6-7) because schools in Zagreb are treating her as a disabled person who
should be taught at home. The parents don't accept their adopted children to
be segregated from other children, so they don't want teachers to come to
their home, but insist on girls being able to normally attend the classes.
This is also the opinion of one of rare Croatian medical specialists in AIDS
who will need to be consulted before giving the final decision on the girls'
education.
The family was also promised by the mayor of Zagreb to get a suitable flat,
but now it seems that there is no free flat in the whole city to be given to
the family.
In Croatia, the rate of HIV-positive people is still relatively low, with
about 100 of infected people in a country with about 4,7 million citizens.

LOA From Conan
Max Weinberg
Max Weinberg is packing up his drum kit to take a leave of absence from Conan O'Brien's "Late Night."
The NBC show's bandleader is going out on the road with Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band in a tour to support the new album, "The Rising," it was announced Friday.
Jimmy Vivino, guitarist for the Max Weinberg Seven, will be the bandleader after Weinberg begins his hiatus on July 19. James Wormworth will sit in on drums.
"Mighty Max" Weinberg has been a member of the E Street Band since 1974. He took a previous leave from O'Brien's show for Springsteen's reunion tour in 1999-2000.

PO-ing The Catholic League
Jane Magazine
The Catholic League is fuming over an article in Jane magazine titled "How to Get Laid Like a Priest." "Let's all take something positive from the vile pedo priests crisis, shall we?" Jeff Johnson writes. "After
all, the . . . tactics they've arduously perfected can be used by non-psycho people who choose to have sex with consenting grown-ups . . . [We] boil it down to 10 simple [sex]-getting commandments." These include, "Take
a vow of celibacy and pretend you mean it," "Wear black," "Provide booze," and "Show 'em the door when they hit 24." Catholic League President William Donohue fumes: "If Jane wanted to satirize the scandal in the Church,
it could have done so by attacking homosexual priests who are responsible for 82 percent of the cases. But that would have evoked cries of homophobia from those in the social pages where [editor Jane] Pratt can usually
be found. Instead, Johnson seizes on the few cases of pedophilia and uses them as a guise to attack the entire church."

CBS Television City
Los Angeles police on Friday arrested a stagehand who tried to drive a car packed with rifles, handguns and ammunition into a television studio owned by CBS, police and network officials said.
It was the second security scare at the famed CBS Television City complex in six weeks.
A CBS spokeswoman said the stagehand, who was not identified, was reporting for work on a program being taped at the Los Angeles studio when he was stopped at the gate by CBS security guards who did not
recognize him and asked to search his vehicle.
The search revealed numerous weapons in the trunk of the man's car, and security guards "detained him without incident" until police officers arrived on the scene shortly afterward, the spokeswoman said.
CBS declined to say what show was being taped on the lot, but a source said the program in question was "American Idol," a popular talent-search "reality" series that airs on the Fox network.

Fights Paternity Claim
George Foreman
Boxing legend George Foreman is fighting the claims of a 22-year-old woman who says she is his daughter.
Foreman, who retired from boxing and has gone on to sell food grills and car mufflers, said he took a blood test which proved he is not the father of Jasmine Christina
Foreman. He says the allegation is years old, and stems from his previous marriage to Cynthia Lewis. They divorced in 1978.
The former heavyweight champion says he has fathered 10 children, including five sons named George.
"I have looked and made sure I could keep all my dear children together for years, so as they would always know each other," Foreman told the Houston Chronicle in Friday's
editions. "Believe me, this could not be true. ... I have been hit a few times, but not hard enough to lose a child."
Foreman said his children are Michi, George Foreman Jr., Freeda George, Georgetta L. Foreman, Natalie A. Foreman, George III, Leola, George IV, George V and George VI.

Faces Tax Evasion Charges
Boris Becker
German prosecutors said on Saturday they had brought charges against three-times Wimbledon tennis champion Boris Becker for alleged tax evasion, the latest in a series of blows to hit the sports icon.
"There is sufficient reason to suspect tax offences," said the head of the Munich public prosecutor's office, Manfred Wick. He said the Munich district court had not yet decided
whether the charges were admissible for court action to go ahead.
Wick declined to specify the charges. Becker, 34, has been under investigation for allegedly claiming his residence was in Monaco, a tax haven, while in fact living in Germany.
Last year Becker's lawyers said the Munich tax inspectorate had asked their client to pay 12 million dollars.
He retired from professional tennis in 1999, but remains a sports star in Germany despite a series of setbacks since he quit the game.
The tax case echoes the woes of Germany's other tennis darling, Steffi Graf, whose father Peter spent nearly two years in jail after being convicted in 1997 of evading
$7 million in tax on Steffi's earnings.

Family Documentary
Madonna
A documentary on Madonna and hubby Guy Ritchie promises more family feuding than an "Osbournes" episode. Screenwriter Dan Cadan, who shot footage of the Material Family during the making of their
movie "Swept Away," says the couple constantly mock each other. "They can be very rude, but very, very funny," Cadan says. "They are just a normal, loving family." Ha-ha highlights include little
Rocco spraying his mom's wardrobe with a fire extinguisher. The short will be released alongside "Swept Away" in October.
