Marc Dion: The Corporate Rapture Is Here (Creators Syndicate)
Oh, Hallelujah! Oh, Hallelujah! The day is here! The great, gettin' up go-to-work mornin' is here! Corporations (whew, finally!) have recognized the need to put Christian principles into practice. Oh, sure, it looks bad here at the beginning, what with stores selling cheap Chinese crap refusing to let their insurance providers cover birth control. But that's gonna be a small premium to pay when you think of the earthly paradise we'll be living in as corporations put their Christian principles to work.

"I talked to my own private God the way Margaret does. I would plead, 'Just let me be normal', which meant let me have my period, give me some breasts, and hurry up ... You know, the 50s, the body image for women was round and curvy, and I was this skinny little thing, very small, and I wanted to be round and curvy the way round and curvy women today want to be skinny things."
10 Neat Facts About Carl Sagan (Neatorama)
When Carl was five years old, he wondered about the stars: what were they? Unsatisfied with the answers he got from his friends and from adults he knew, Carl went to the library and asked for a book about stars. The librarian handed him ... a book on celebrities!
"England Swings (Like a Pendulum Do)" is a 1965 country music song written and performed by Roger Miller. The single was Miller's eleventh hit on the US country chart where it peaked at number three. On the Billboard Hot 100, it peaked at number eight and was Miller's second number one on the Easy Listening chart. Petula Clark (from the Colour My World album) and Pat Boone both released cover versions in 1967. The title refers to Swinging London, a popular term for the fashion scene in London at the time, but the lyrics mostly relate to stereotypical notions of traditional England, with references to "bobbies on bicycles", Westminster Abbey, and so on.

That's such a weird song, it stands out easily in my memory.
Beyond how it sounds, I think it placed very highly in the charts.
I am guessing it was 1962. I'm probably close. I never heard it till the late 2000's.

Today ( Saturday ) is my birthday. It's going pretty well.
DHL left a note on my door yesterday that they came by to deliver some ( obviously ) birthday gifts for me, but they clearly didn't knock,
or ring the doorbell. We were sitting right near the front door, & would've heard them easily.
So, they'll supposedly come back Monday with them.
I wonder if they get paid more that way?
At least they didn't just drop them by the front door for my neighbors to take like the regular post office did. Lol!
A swell friend did send me a full carton of unopened, new garbage pail kids. It came today in the regular mail.
I was surprised at how much fun it was opening them.

And it goes on and on and on.

Robert Redford will play Dan Rather in a film about the former CBS anchor's disputed report about President George W. Bush's National Guard service.
The film, titled "Truth," will be adapted from the memoir "Truth And Duty: The Press, The President, And The Privilege Of Power" by former CBS producer Mary Mapes, said the production company, Mythology Entertainment. Cate Blanchett is signed on to play Mapes.
The movie will chronicle the scandal that erupted after Rather's 2004 report for "60 Minutes II," produced by Mapes. The story cited documents as proof of preferential treatment for Bush during the Vietnam War that were not authenticated by CBS. Mapes was fired, and Rather departed the "CBS Evening News" months later.
Rather, who has maintained the story was accurate, later filed a $70 million lawsuit against CBS and its parent company, Viacom, claiming he was made a scapegoat. The suit was dismissed.

Michael McKean is joining series star Bob Odenkirk in AMC's "Better Call Saul," the much-awaited prequel to "Breaking Bad," with Jonathan Banks, another star from that wildly popular drama, also set for the new venture.
Best-known from the film "This Is Spinal Tap," McKean will play the brother of Saul Goodman, the character originated in "Breaking Bad" by Odenkirk. Banks will continue in his role as "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut.
Other cast members announced Friday at the summer TV critics' tour include Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian and Michael Mando.
"Better Call Saul" takes place in 2002, about five years before the starting point of "Breaking Bad." It vaults wily lawyer Saul Goodman from supporting status as the counselor for meth dealers Walter White and Jesse Pinkman (who were played by "Breaking Bad" stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul) into the series spotlight.
Russians have endured countless crackdowns on their freedoms, but a legal ban on using their vast vocabulary of swear words has really got them hot under the collar.
This month's law against swearing in films, theatre and the media has propelled the controversial subject to the forefront of public debate and brought together critics and loyalists of President Vladimir Putin.
At the heart of the discourse is Russia's hugely potent lexicon of obscenities known as "mat," which is centred on four taboo words and an infinite number of their variations.
Describing female and male private parts and sexual intercourse, the words sound more offensive than their English-language equivalents, are considered unprintable and usually bleeped on TV.
The measure comes amid the growing influence of the Russian Orthodox Church as well as government calls to protect the Russian language in conflict-torn Ukraine.

The outfit actor Clayton Moore wore when he made appearances as the Lone Ranger character he played on the TV series more than a half century ago will go under the hammer on Saturday with the auction house expecting it to fetch about $150,000.
The ensemble includes a matching light blue shirt and pants made for riding, a red kerchief, Stetson hat, cowboy boots and a belt holster that holds two custom-made Colt pistols.
Moore, who portrayed the justice-seeking masked man on the "Lone Ranger" TV series that ran from 1949 to 1957, wore the outfit for public appearances as the character after the show ended.
Waco businessman Bob Davis bought the Lone Ranger outfit for about $100,000 at an auction in Los Angeles after Moore's death in 1999 and it has remained in the Davis family since then, according to Scott Franks, the owner the A&S Auction Company in Waco that will sell the outfit.
U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Friday voted along party lines to begin to transition E-Rate, the largest U.S. educational technology subsidy program, to focus on high-speed Internet and increasingly on Wi-Fi in the next few years.
In a 3-2 vote, the FCC approved Chairman Tom Wheeler's proposal to phase out E-Rate spending on older technologies such as pagers, shift focus to high-speed Internet and commit $2 billion in the next two years to Wi-Fi, without raising the program's budget.
The plan had faced criticisms from Republicans and Democrats alike. To quell a key concern, the final rules ensure that E-Rate's increased focus on Wi-Fi comes secondary to schools' and libraries' requests to fund more basic Internet connectivity.
E-Rate, created in 1996 and funded by fees Americans pay on their monthly phone bills, has helped connect most U.S. classrooms and public libraries to the Internet, but rules have limited how much money could fund broadband and Wi-Fi.
The FCC pledged to devote to Wi-Fi $1 billion in 2015 and another $1 billion in 2016 from unused E-Rate funds, dispensed to schools and libraries on a per-student or per-square-foot basis. After that, the FCC would target to keep spending $1 billion a year on Wi-Fi, seeking new savings from phase-outs of old technologies and more efficient bureaucracy.

The Trump Plaza Hotel in Atlantic City could shut its doors in September and lay off 1,000 workers, a local newspaper reported, in what could make it the fourth casino to close this year in the faltering New Jersey resort city.
The Press of Atlantic City said in a story posted online late on Friday that an official from Trump Plaza called New Jersey state Senator Jim Whelan and told him the casino, which is owned by Trump Entertainment Resorts, expected to issue layoff notices on Monday ahead of a Sept. 16 closure.
The seashore casino is one of the poorest performers in Atlantic City, which began the year with 12 casinos. Trump Plaza booked less than half its rooms in the first quarter of 2014, and had the lowest gaming revenue of any of the city's casinos in May, according to state documents.
Its expected closure follows a series of blows for Atlantic City, and would mean the city would have a third fewer casinos than at the start of the year.

After losing the 2012 presidential election, Republicans vowed to expand their appeal beyond their shrinking base of white males. But as they concede, winning over black voters is likely to be a long and difficult task.
Since opening an African-American engagement office in North Carolina last fall, Republicans have courted black business leaders, visited barber shops and churches and gone door-to-door in black neighborhoods to sell the Republican message.
So far, their success has been limited. But they say it is just the first step in a sustained effort to change the party's image among black voters, the most loyal Democratic voting bloc.
"Let me see, you want to take away my healthcare, unemployment compensation and voting rights, but you want me to think you are my friend? Old folks have an expression for that: 'Is you a fool?'" Curtis Bridges, a black electronics technician, said at a Raleigh voter registration rally sponsored by the Moral Monday protest leaders.

Elias Barrocas grew up thinking of Spain as a beloved ancestral home, but one that painfully rejected his Jewish family five centuries ago.
Now, he is waiting expectantly for a long overdue homecoming.
The Spanish government presented a bill last month that would grant citizenship to Jews forced into exile from Spain by the Inquisition in 1492. The plan, expected to pass easily in Parliament, aims to right a past wrong and honor the loyalty of communities that "do not hold a grudge" against a country that forgot them, according to the bill.
For Barrocas and many other American Jews of Spanish descent the emotional link with the Spain of their forefathers was never broken.
His parents first taught him Ladino, a language spoken by the expelled Jewish communities that was derived from Old Spanish. He sang Ladino songs, observed traditions passed on for generations and heard stories of a people that either faced expulsion, conversion to Catholicism or death at the stake during the Inquisition.

A new snapshot of U.S. methane emissions in 2004 shows livestock - primarily cattle and pigs - were the country's worst gas emitters at the time.
The study also found that livestock expelled 40 percent more methane than had been estimated by the Environmental Protection Agency, a result in agreement with a recently published review of hundreds of emissions studies detailed in the journal Science. The animals also bested the oil and gas industry.
"We are very confident that livestock emissions were being underestimated," said lead study author Kevin Wecht, an atmospheric chemist at Harvard University in Massachusetts.
Methane is less abundant than carbon dioxide, and disappears faster in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. However, it is more effective at trapping infrared radiation (the greenhouse effect). Methane gas comes from natural sources, such as decomposing plants in wetlands, and from human activities, including oil and gas production and animals and manure on farms.
The new analysis led by Wecht took a broader look, by using satellite monitoring of methane gas levels in the atmosphere over the United States. Wecht and his co-authors combined satellite and aircraft data to provide a comprehensive look at methane, which is a potent but short-lived greenhouse gas. The researchers only looked at 2004, because that was the year for which the best satellite coverage was available, Wecht said.
Tommy Ramone, a co-founder of the seminal punk band the Ramones and the last surviving member of the original group, has died, a business associate said Saturday.
Dave Frey, who works for Ramones Productions and Silent Partner Management, confirmed that Ramone died on Friday. Frey didn't have additional details. Ramone was 65.
Tommy Ramone, a drummer, co-founded the Ramones in 1974 in New York along with singer Joey Ramone, bassist Dee Dee Ramone and guitarist Johnny Ramone. All four band members had different last names, but took the common name Ramone.
The band influenced a generation of rockers, and their hit songs "I Wanna Be Sedated," and "Blitzkrieg Bop," among others, earned them an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
Since its debut album in 1976, the band struggled for commercial success, but they left a formidable imprint on the rock genre. Though they never had a Top 40 song, the Ramones influenced scores of followers, including bands such as Green Day and Nirvana.
The Ramones' best-known songs reflected their twisted teen years in Queens: "Beat on the Brat," ''Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue," ''Teenage Lobotomy," ''Sheena Is a Punk Rocker."
The Ramones disbanded in 1996 after a tour that followed their final studio album, "Adios Amigos." A live farewell tour album, "We're Outta Here!", was released in 1997.
Johnny Ramone, whose birth name was John Cummings, died in 2004 of prostate cancer. Joey Ramone, whose real name is Jeff Hyman, died in 2001 of lymphatic cancer. Dee Dee Ramone, whose real name is Douglas Colvin, died from a drug overdose in 2002. Tommy Ramone was born Erdelyi Tamas in Budapest, Hungary.
