Frederic Ogden Nash (August 19, 1902 - May 19, 1971) was an American poet well known for his light verse. At the time of his death in 1971, The New York Times said his "droll verse with its unconventional rhymes made him the country's best-known producer of humorous poetry". Ogden Nash wrote over 500 pieces of comic verse. The best of his work was published in 14 volumes between 1931 and 1972.
Nash moved to Baltimore, Maryland where he lived for most of his life, from 1934 until his death in 1971. Nash thought of Baltimore as home. After his return from a brief move to New York, he wrote "I could have loved New York had I not loved Balti-more."

Ogden Nash (the darling of the pseudo-intellectuals in the 1950's and born in upstate NY) once said: "I could have loved New York had I not loved Balti-more." For rubbish like this, he was acclaimed...
In the '50's Nash was a frequent guest on television game shows...

Ogden Nash. One of our Great American writers and humorists! My Grandfather used to read us Ogden Nash after Holiday or Sunday Family Dinners. I have a good idea where my obsession to make up words and play with language came from!!

The streets of Chabcha county in western Qinghai province were quiet on Saturday as Tibetan monks marked the Dalai Lama's birthday in their homes, wary that any public celebration could endanger a tentative softening by Chinese authorities.
Tibetans in China have always had to steer clear of public ceremonies revering their 78-year-old exiled spiritual leader who Beijing has denounced as a "wolf in monk's robes".
But in the run-up to this year's anniversary, authorities in Qinghai had discussed proposals to ease restrictions including allowing Tibetans to openly display photographs of the Dalai Lama, the International Campaign for Tibet said.
On Saturday, however, there was no sign of any celebration with many ordinary Tibetans not even aware it was his birthday.
Beijing considers the Dalai Lama, who fled China in 1959 after an abortive uprising against Chinese rule, a violent separatist. The Dalai Lama, who is based in India, says he is merely seeking greater autonomy for his Himalayan homeland.

"Game of Thrones" is heading to San Diego Comic-Con later this month, and author George R.R. Martin has confirmed a few details about the panel.
The author of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series announced in a post on his "Not A Blog" website that the panel will take place on July 19 from 2:50-3:45 in Hall H.
George confirmed he will be on the panel as will executive producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss. Dan and David were not on the panel last year due to filming conflicts.
GRRM also confirmed there will be a "Game of Thrones" autograph session at the Warner Bros. booth.
It is the comic book cover that captured the grim visage of an older, wiser - and meaner - Batman.
Now, the 1986 pen and ink creation - drawn by writer/artist Frank Miller - that is the cover to "The Dark Knight Returns" No. 2 will be sold next month in Dallas by Heritage Auctions.
It's the first cover from DC Comics' 1986 four-issue "Dark Knight" miniseries to be sold and is expected to go for more than $500,000.
Also up for sale is a 9.2-graded copy of "Batman" No. 1 from 1940, that shows Batman and Robin swinging in front of a Gotham city skyline. It's being auctioned on behalf of Tadano America Corp. A similar copy sold for $850,000 in 2012.

The teenage daughters of rappers Lil Wayne and Birdman are in New Orleans with their dads this weekend, but it's the girls who are greeting fans and signing autographs at the Essence Festival.
Reginae Carter is the 14-year-old daughter of Lil Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Carter. She collaborated with 16-year-old Bria Williams, daughter of Bryan "Birdman" Williams on a teen novel, "Paparazzi Princesses." It's based on stories and characters inspired by their own life experiences.
The book covers the privileges and challenges of being teenagers whose fathers are hip-hop stars. The characters learn how to shuffle red carpet events, school, and relationships with friends and their parents while trying to find their own identities in the shadows of their famous fathers.
The girls, whose dads have been friends and musical collaborators for years, said they have the same worries and stresses as most teenagers, including peer pressure at school, chores and family relationships.
The White House says it won't classify the Westboro Baptist Church as a "hate group" in response to petitions filed at WhiteHouse.gov.
That doesn't mean the White House reserves judgment.
"As a matter of practice, the federal government doesn't maintain a list of hate groups," said the official White House response. "That all said, we agree that practices such as protesting at the funerals of men and women who died in service to this country and preventing their families from mourning peacefully are reprehensible."
The church recently announced via Twitter that it would picket the funerals of the 19 Arizona firefighters who died attempting to contain a wildfire.
The largest petition - "Legally recognize Westboro Baptist Church as a hate group" - netted 367,180 signatures.

A Northern California roller coaster appears to have been a little too much fun.
The Gold Striker at Great America in Santa Clara had to be taken offline this week because riders were screaming too loudly.
The San Jose Mercury News reports that the shrieks were exceeding the decibel limit agreed upon in a settlement with Prudential Real Estate, which owns adjacent properties.
So Great America had to cover a portion of the track in a sound-dampening tunnel. The wooden roller coaster reopened on Wednesday after the work was completed.

During last month's visit of Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi, Chairman of the Interim Election Council Khil Raj Regmi said Nepal is firmly committed to the One-China Policy and reaffirmed its stand that the territory of Nepal will not be allowed to be used for any activities against China. Nepal ceased issuing refugee papers to Tibetans in 1989 and recognizes Tibet to be a part of China.

Andrea Nerone lost her home and later was denied welfare to support her family after her husband abandoned her and their four children late last year.
Unemployed and no longer able to pay the rent on their previous home, Nerone crowded with her kids into a modest house owned by her mother and collected welfare for a few months. But the payments were cut off when the government determined that the children's father was employed and thus able to support them.
The big problem: the family was no longer in contact with him and he wasn't giving them any money.
A decree recently issued by Argentina's female president could help keep other women like Nerone from falling into similar straits if their partners leave. After spending billions on welfare to families that keep kids vaccinated and in school, President Cristina Fernandez has made a key change: From now on, mothers will collect welfare payments instead of fathers.
The measure announced last month is a victory for the Argentine housewives union, underscoring the growing role of women in a patriarchal society while also trying to resolve the financial problems caused by profligate fathers. It is also the first major change in the country's per-child welfare payments, a cash transfer program similar to those that have brought millions out of poverty across Latin America.

Archaeologists have discovered two ancient Egyptian skeletons, dating back more than 3,300 years, which were each buried with a toe ring made of copper alloy, the first time such rings have been found in ancient Egypt.
The toe rings were likely worn while the individuals were still alive, and the discovery leaves open the question of whether they were worn for fashion or magical reasons.
Supporting the magical interpretation, one of the rings was found on the right toe of a male, age 35-40, whose foot had suffered a fracture along with a broken femur above it.
Both skeletons were found in a cemetery just south of the ancient city of Akhetaten, whose name means "Horizon of the Aten." Now called Amarna, the city of Akhetaten was a short-lived Egyptian capital built by Akhenaten a pharaoh who tried to focus Egypt's religion around the worship of the sun disc, the "Aten." He was also likely the father of Tutankhamun.

Several life forms have been discovered living and reproducing in a lake buried under 3.5 kilometres of ice in Antarctica, scientists say.
"We found much more complexity than anyone thought," said Scott Rogers, a professor of biological sciences at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, whose team led the investigations in Lake Vostok.
In research published June 26 in the Public Library of Science journal, Rogers said the presence of marine and freshwater species supports the hypothesis that the lake once was connected to the ocean, and that freshwater was deposited in the lake by the overriding glacier.
By sequencing the DNA and RNA from ice samples, the team identified thousands of bacteria, including some that are commonly found in the digestive systems of fish, crustaceans and annelid worms, in addition to fungi and two species of archaea, or single-celled organisms that tend to live in extreme environments.
They also discovered psychrophiles, or organisms that live in extreme cold, along with heat-loving thermophiles, which Rogers said suggests the presence of hydrothermal vents deep in the lake.
