Catch a Falling Toddler (neatorma)
A couple in Ninghai, Zhejiang province, China, left their 2-year-old daughter Qiqi asleep in their fifth-floor apartment Thursday evening. When Qiqi woke up, working men on the street below saw her at the window. They rushed to catch her as she fell. Two of the men were injured in the rescue, but the child sustained only a scratch.
She was referred to as "The Queen of Gospel", and described by Harry Belafonte in 1972 as "the single most powerful black woman in the United States". Who is she?
Part of the British Invasion, this duo played "The Redcoats" (Fred and Ernie) on the the Dick Van Dyke Show and British singing duo Nigel & Patrick on The Patty Duke Show. Who are they?
Chad & Jeremy are an English singing folk rock duo originating in the 1960s, comprising eyeglasses-wearing Chad Stuart (born David Stuart Chadwick, 10 December 1941, Windermere, Cumbria), and Jeremy Clyde (born Michael Thomas Jeremy Clyde, 22 March 1941, Dorney, Buckinghamshire). They were part of the British Invasion, a large influx of British rock and pop musicians to the American music scene.
The duo also made several television guest appearances. In back-to-back sitcom appearances, they first played fictional singing duo "The Redcoats" (Fred and Ernie) on the February 10, 1965 episode of the sitcom Dick Van Dyke Show that satirized Beatlemania. Two songs were featured in that episode: "No Other Baby" and "My, How The Time Goes By". The following week they appeared on The Patty Duke Show as unknown British singing duo Nigel & Patrick, performing "A Summer Song", "The Truth Often Hurts the Heart" and "Yesterday's Gone".

Well, who among your aging boomers could forget, "Chad & Jeremy," as the duo who played, "The Redcoats" (Fred and Ernie) on the the Dick Van Dyke Show, and British singing duo Nigel & Patrick on The Patty Duke Show. I do remember them, but damned if I can remember why I walked into the kitchen earlier in the day...
Then
And now....
I think they look better now!
PS: Noting the passing of, "Jo" the Lizard, brought to mind the Iguana my son had years ago. My son accidentally dropped the top of the cage on him, and he passed - quickly. Oh, my son was devastated...
He is buried in a fancy box, in the backyard of a duplex which we rented years ago. Someday, someone will excavate that yard and find the box and think, WTF?? Hopefully the bones will be intact...

R.I.P. "Jo"... May there be crickets galore wherever you are!
Poor Jo--had a good life with you. Isn't 15 years a long life for that size reptile? If I remember correctly, Jo lost a tail at least once. How about an obit to go with the picture? Sorry Jo is no longer with you and the kid.
Linda >^..^< We're all only temporarily able bodied.
Thanks, Linda!
Jo was a present from one of the cats. The cat had found him under some bushes and proceeded to bite off his tail, which caused the cat's mouth to start foaming.
We scooped up Jo and made him a home in a terrarium. Eventually, he grew a new tail and became part of the family.
The kid was in kindergarten and Jo was his first 'Show & Tell'. Jo was quite the hit.
Jo survived and thrived in his new accommodations.
A few years back he was attacked by some extra aggressive crickets that nearly severed his tail. We changed his diet to meal worms and all was well.
Every day, weather permitting, we'd take his terrarium outside and put it on the picnic table where he could bask in the sun.
Jo lost most of his sight a little over 2 years ago, but he and the kid worked out a feeding system, first with giant tweezers, and then fingers, that was quite successful.
The good people at the reptile store predicted he'd only survive a few months at most after blindness.
Then last week Jo kept flopping on his back, so we figured the end was near.

Al Franken barely made it into the Senate the first time, squeaking by with 312 votes after months of recounts and legal skirmishes that left Minnesota Republicans salivating at the prospect of snatching the seat back from the former "Saturday Night Live" star in 2014.
Four years into his term, Franken barely figures into the GOP's calculations for trying to wrest control of the Senate from Democrats. Republicans don't consider him a top target for defeat, and they haven't found a strong challenger in the Democratic-leaning state.
To solidify his then-shaky standing, Franken employed a disciplined strategy that started in 2009 when he was declared the victor of a three-way race in which he won less than 42 percent of the vote. Back then, he spoke of not wanting to "waste this chance" and made repeated promises to keep his head down and do the work. He has largely stuck to that vow, avoiding the national spotlight. He rarely talks to the Washington press corps, has shed his comedic persona and focused on policy, working to be taken seriously.
All things being equal, Minnesota isn't an easy place for Republicans to win these days, given its deep history of electing Democrats and the state GOP's current woes: the debt-plagued party hasn't won a statewide race since 2006. But Franken's standing - more than 50 percent of those polled last fall by the Minneapolis Star Tribune approved of the job he's doing - and fairly weak GOP candidates make it even tougher.

Billy Crystal has helped raise $1 million to rebuild his native beach town on New York's Long Island hard-hit by Superstorm Sandy.
The "City Slickers" and "When Harry Met Sally" star announced the gift to the city of Long Beach on Saturday, while standing on a newly installed patch of the town's boardwalk.
Newsday reports $112,000 of the gift will come from Crystal's family. The $888,000 is coming from money he helped raise at the annual Celebrity Fight Night fundraiser in March, an event that raises money for the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute and other charities.
Officials hope part of a new $44 million boardwalk will be completed by mid-July.
A huge-headed, duck-footed mix of beagle, boxer and basset hound was the upset winner at the 25th annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest.
Walle, a 4-year-old mutt from Chico, Calif., who was entered at the last minute, was judged Friday as the most unsightly of 30 dogs at the Northern California competition.
"This dog looked like he's been photo-shopped with pieces from various dogs and maybe a few other animals," judge Brian Sobel said.
"People come up to me and say that dog is not right," owner Tammie Barbee said, "but I love him."

Sicily's Mount Etna, one of the most active volcanoes on the planet, has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the committee that makes the selections announced today (June 21) from their annual meeting, taking place this year in Cambodia.
The iconic volcano - the most active stratovolcano in the world - has been added, along with several other sites, to the list of some 969 natural and cultural heritage sites that have "outstanding universal value," according to the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) website. The criteria for inclusion on the list include a range of factors, such as being an area of "exceptional natural beauty," a valuable relic of an ancient or still-existent culture, or, like Etna, an example of "significant on-going geological processes."
The list is meant to encourage countries that sign on to the World Heritage Convention to protect the sites within their boundaries. When a site is endangered by environmental concerns, which has been the case with Australia's Great Barrier Reef, or by conflict, like important cultural sites in Syria are by the civil war there, the committee lists them on their World Heritage in Danger list.
Mount Etna was placed on the list because of its status as an iconic volcano and an excellent natural laboratory to study geological processes. The committee cites the volcano's long eruptive history, which can be traced back 500,000 years and has been recorded by humans going back some 2,700 years. The area included in the Etna World Heritage Site encompasses some 47,536 uninhabited acres (19,237 hectares) on the highest part of the peak.
He is no musician, but dissident artist Ai Weiwei is using music to convey his criticism and mockery of China's authoritarian state.
On the second anniversary of his 81-day secret detention, Ai released his first music album "The Divine Comedy," which includes the previously released single, "Dumbass."
The song is meant to reconstruct his detention, which was part of an overall crackdown on dissent in 2011. Ai's subsequent conviction for tax evasion has been seen by his supporters as punishment for his activism.
Musician Zuoxiao Zuzhou, a friend of Ai, wrote the music, with influences from pop, rock, punk and heavy metal. Ai's vocals appear to spoken more than sang, and the lyrics include obscenities to express his anger at what he sees as a repressive police state.

By joining with a much bigger Catholic health system, a prominent Orange County hospital hopes to enhance patients' access to a host of services - except one.
Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, based in Newport Beach, started banning elective abortions this year after reaching an agreement to affiliate with St. Joseph Health, riling some doctors and women's advocates.
The controversy has fueled a feisty debate in local editorial pages and prompted a rally outside the hospital, making the Southern California suburbs the latest scene of a culture clash occurring across the country as Catholic and non-Catholic hospitals strike deals in a wave of health care industry mergers.
Hoag has a flagship 485-bed hospital with sweeping Pacific Ocean views and another hospital in nearby Irvine. It joined with Irvine-based St. Joseph Health, which has 14 acute care hospitals in California and Texas, after winning state approval to form a regional health care system called Covenant Health Network.

An Icelandic business executive says a private plane is on standby to transport NSA secrets leaker Edward Snowden from Hong Kong to Iceland.
Olafur Vignir Sigurvinsson said Friday that while he has not spoken directly with Edward Snowden, he has been in touch with a third party representing him. The businessman has connections to the WikiLeaks secret-spilling organization.
But Iceland's government says it has not received an asylum request from Snowden, who has revealed his role in providing secret U.S. National Security Agency documents.
Interior Ministry spokesman Johannes Tomasson says Snowden hasn't approached the ministry and an asylum request could only begin if Snowden is in Iceland.

Why did the British government shut down its official UFO Desk in 2009?
The truth can now be revealed, as the final cache of documents and UFO reports compiled by the U.K. Ministry of Defence (MoD) has been released to the public.
Apparently, the MoD concluded that operating the UFO Desk was a massive waste of time and money, according to SkyNews.
After manning the UFO Desk for more than 50 years, the officials found that "no UFO sighting reported to [the MoD] has ever revealed anything to suggest an extraterrestrial presence or military threat to the U.K.," the memo stated.
The release of the UFO files is guaranteed to generate some controversy, as has occurred in the past. When British officials released an earlier cache of files in 2011, there was no information related to the "Rendlesham Forest Incident," a UFO sighting sometimes referred to as "Britain's Roswell." Some UFO enthusiasts reportedly thought the omission was a government cover-up.

As the Northern Hemisphere enjoys the longest day of the year, the summer solstice, researchers overwintering in Antarctica are celebrating midwinter.
Midwinter's Day is the shortest, darkest day in Antarctica, but the staff at the four wintering research stations look forward to the solstice like Christmas - complete with homemade gifts.
"You can't go shop and buy anything, so you put in a lot of effort and time," said Andy Barker, who works at the air unit at the British Antarctic Survey headquarters in Cambridge and who has spent three winters in Antarctica.
Most research activities in Antarctica occur during the continent's summer, when it's lighter and (relatively) warmer. But a handful of brave souls spend the winter keeping the continent's research stations running.
