• Otis Williams is the last of the original Temptations, the group that brought us "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," "Can't Get Next to You," "Get Ready," "Just My Imagination," and "Papa was a Rolling Stone." In addition to his talent with music, he has a talent with words. In 2007, instead of saying that he has no plans to retire at the current time, he said, "I'm going to ride the hair off the horse. When I get off the horse, the horse will be bald."
• Children's book illustrator and author Margot Zemach worked as a movie usherette at the famous Grauman's Chinese Theater when she was young. Unfortunately, she could not see well in the dark and so she was a horrible usherette, often stepping on people's feet and often seating people on top of other people. Fortunately, she got married, started to raise a family, and became a book illustrator-a job she could work at while using one foot to rock a baby bed.
• Mickey Mantle's father worked in the zinc mines of Commerce, Oklahoma, and he wanted Mickey to escape that fate by playing baseball. When Mickey was one day old, his father put a baseball in his hand. When Mickey was four years old, his father put a bat in his hands. When Mickey was five years old, his father began to pitch curve balls to him. Mickey escaped the zinc mines and made a career out of playing for the New York Yankees.
• During World War II, many American women became Rosie the Riveters. One such woman, Nova Lee McGhee Holbrook, worked at the Kaiser Shipyard in Richmond, California. When her boss warned her that being a welder meant that she would get dirty, she replied, "I can wash it off."
Set in Scandinavia in the 6th century, a hero of the Geats comes to the aid of Hrothgar, the king of the Danes. What is the title of this epic of Old English literature?
Harpadon nehereus, called the Bombay duck, bummalo, bombil, and boomla is a species of lizardfish. Adults may reach a maximum length of 40 cm, but the usual size is around 25 cm.
The origin of the term "Bombay duck" is uncertain. One popular etymology claims that the overpowering smell of the dried fish when transported by mail train (the Bombay Daak) led to the phrase "you smell like the Bombay Daak" in the days of the British Raj. However, the Oxford English Dictionary dates "Bombay duck" to at least 1850, two years before the first railroad in Bombay was constructed, making this explanation unlikely.
The fish is often dried and salted before it is consumed, as its meat does not have a distinctive taste of its own. After drying, the odour of the fish is extremely powerful, and it is usually transported in air-tight containers. The Bombay duck is a popular food item in certain areas of India.

Fish. Specifically a species of lizard fish, a common catch in India. Usually salted and dried in the open air, Bombay Duck stinks to high heaven, but I guess Indians eat it anyway.
Jacqueline replied:
Bombay Duck is fish. It's a lizard fish to be more exact. They are 9 to 10 in. Long on average. When smoked, they're very high in protein.

It is a fish from India. When dried it is beloved by eaters of curry which is gonna be at least a billion people. It is said to be pungent and an acquired taste. So is cilantro which I love. I am not sure about pungent dried fish, however.

Prince's "Blue Angel" Cloud 2 guitar that the late singer played during some of his most iconic moments was sold at a Beverly Hills auction for $563,500.
The 1984 electric guitar was used by the famous singer on his tours for "Purple Rain" and "Diamonds and Pearls." Prince also played it during Saturday Night Live's "15th Anniversary Special," Julien's Auctions confirmed in a news release.
The custom-made guitar was considered lost until the auction house was contacted by John Woodland, who performs conservation work on Prince's guitars. After closer examination, it was confirmed that it was Prince's beloved guitar Blue Angel, according to the news release.
This isn't the first Cloud guitar of Prince's to be auctioned. Julien's Auctions set a world record with the price of his teal Cloud guitar in November 2017, which sold for $700,000 and Prince's custom made yellow Cloud guitar which sold for $225,000 in May 2018.
Kurt Cobain's guitar from Nirvana's iconic MTV Unplugged performance sold at auction Saturday for a record $6 million. The previous record was $3.95 million for a Black Stratocaster owned by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour.
Pre-auction bids on the 1959 Martin D-18E, purchased by the Nirvana singer at Los Angeles' Voltage Guitars and modified for the left-handed Cobain, reached $1 million even bidding officially opened Saturday. The guitar received seven bids total, including the winning bid of $6,010,00, the Julien's Auctions website stated.
The guitar also came with its original hard-shell case that Cobain had adorned with a flyer for the band Poison Idea's 1990 album Feel the Darkness. Inside the case is a half-used pack of Martin guitar strings, three picks, and a "suede 'stash' bag" that's decorated with a small silver spoon, fork, and knife.
In October 2019, Cobain's green cardigan from the Unplugged performance sold at Julien's Auctions for $334,000, making it the most expensive sweater ever purchased at auction.
Two months after pulling a "haha, just kidding" on Flavor Flav's highly public split from the group, a reunified and reinvigoratedPublic Enemy has returned with a new single, "State of the Union (STFU)." Produced by DJ Premier, the track is the latest anti-Trump statement to come from Public Enemy frontman Chuck D, who's spoken out about the president and his policies in his solo work and through the supergroup Prophets of Rage.
Here, Trump is a "dictator," a "joke," a "state bozo"-a Nazi piece of shit, basically-in an infectious old-school track punctuated by Flavor Flav's unmistakable voice repeating, "State of the union! Shut the fuck up!" As well as condemning Trump, the track also implores people of color to learn their history and vote, because "another four years gonna gut y'all hollow," as Chuck D puts it. The music video for the track further evokes the recent wave of protests prompted by the death of George Floyd, juxtaposing footage of killer cops with the chorus, "sorry ass motherfucker, stay away from me!"
In a press release about the song, Chuck D says, "Our collective voices keep getting louder. The rest of the planet is on our side. But it's not enough to talk about change. You have to show up and demand change." He adds, "folks gotta vote like their lives depend on it, because it does."
"State of the Union (STFU)" is available as a free download on Public Enemy's website, as well as on all major streaming platforms.
These are not the droids you're looking for. But there's still something oddly familiar about that droid bartender…
The final episode of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian, which unveils the secrets of the making of the DIsney+ show, has revealed that Luke Skywalker himself, aka Mark Hamill, made a secret cameo in an episode of the show.
The moment came in the fifth episode of the series. In the scene, viewers are taken to the cantina on Tatooine. Yes, the same one from the original Star Wars, A New Hope.
The droid bartender in that scene is voiced by an uncredited Mark Hamill.
Series creator Jon Favreau said the droid's name is EV-9D9, and that he was previously seen torturing other droids in Return of the Jedi.
The news in the US has been dominated by anti-racism protests for the past couple of weeks, but coronavirus is now back in the headlines.
Several states have seen a record number of cases in recent days, leading to fears that the country is experiencing a second wave of infections.
But Vice-President Mike Pence (R-Animatronic) said those fears were "overblown" and accused the media of using "grim predictions" to scare the American people.
With more than two million coronavirus cases, the US has the highest number of confirmed infections in the world - about a quarter of the global total.
Spikes in cases in those new hotspots mean the country's overall seven-day average has now risen for several days in a row for the first time since cases peaked in early April.
NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite observed a huge Saharan dust plume streaming over the North Atlantic Ocean, beginning on June 13. Satellite data showed the dust had spread over 2,000 miles.
At NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, Colin Seftor, an atmospheric scientist, created an animation of the dust and aerosols from the plume using data from instruments that fly aboard the Suomi NPP satellite.
On June 18, 2020, the VIIRS instrument aboard NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite captured a visible image of the large light brown plume of Saharan dust over the North Atlantic Ocean. The image showed that the dust from Africa's west coast extended almost to the Lesser Antilles in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean. The image showed that the dust had spread over 2,000 miles across the Atlantic.
Normally, hundreds of millions of tons of dust are picked up from the deserts of Africa and blown across the Atlantic Ocean each year. That dust helps build beaches in the Caribbean and fertilizes soils in the Amazon. It can also affect air quality in North and South America.
People looking for a whiter smile might reach for charcoal toothpaste, given its claims of being "natural" and its long history. But does charcoal toothpaste really whiten teeth? And does it do so safely?
The answer is mixed. While charcoal toothpaste can brighten your smile a little, it's not the best whitening agent out there. Nor is it the safest option available, Dr. John Brooks, a clinical professor in the Department of Oncology and Diagnostic Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, told Live Science.
Those in pursuit of pearly whites have used charcoal for oral hygiene since Hippocrates recommended it to his fellow Grecians, according to a 1992 study in the British Dental Journal. In the 1930s and 1940s, American manufacturers touted charcoal chewing gums and powders that they claimed would freshen and whiten, a 2017 commentary in the Journal of the American Dental Association noted. Today health- and eco-concerned consumers can find floss, toothpaste, mouthwash and even toothbrushes infused with activated charcoal that promise to whiten teeth and "detoxify" mouths.
Many manufacturers claim that the tiny pores in activated charcoal can similarly "detoxify" your mouth and remove stains from teeth. A 2017 review of charcoal-based toothpastes published in the Journal of the American Dental Association found that 96% of charcoal toothpastes claimed to have whitening benefits and 46% boasted the ability to detoxify teeth. One problem: There is no scientifically agreed-upon definition of what it means to detoxify something, or at least not a mouth. And these claims are largely unsupported by evidence. Even more concerning, the safety and toxicity of these charcoal-based dental products hasn't been tested, Brooks wrote in the review of charcoal-based toothpastes.
Humanity would need to send at least 110 people to Mars to build a self-sustaining civilisation there, according to a new study.
New research has attempted to understand just how many people and resources would be required to settle elsewhere in the universe.
The paper, written by Jean-Marc Salotti from the Bordeaux Institut National Polytechnique, attempted to solve the question using mathematical modelling. It tried to find out both the minimum number of people that would have to live on the planet as well as the way of life they would have to pursue if their life there was to be self-sustaining.
He found that 110 would be the minimum number of individuals required, though having more people would change the calculations.
He also noted that the success of those people would depend on a range of factors, including how well they would be able to work together and share their time and resources.
For a movie that came out four decades ago, a lot in The Blues Brothers still feels very relevant today.
"It's anti-Nazi. It's anti-racist," explains its star and co-screenwriter, Dan Aykroyd. "It venerates African American culture and recognizes African American performers and artists." While any cultural conversation today might cite the comedy as an example of appropriation and "white saviors" rescuing the blues, in 1973, the movie's origins seemed innocent enough.
When John Belushi, then 24, journeyed from Chicago to Toronto to scout Second City performers for The National Lampoon Radio Hour, "it was love at first sight," Aykroyd, 21 at the time, recalls of their first meeting. The two went to Aykroyd's 505 Club, where he introduced Belushi - a self-professed heavy metal lover - to the blues. Composer Howard Shore (the Lord of the Rings trilogy) suggested the two comedians start a band called The Blues Brothers. Three years later, Aykroyd and Belushi debuted the act on Saturday Night Live, performing vocals and harmonica and backed by Shore's SNL house band and other heavy hitters. (Among them were Stax Records legends Steve "The Colonel" Cropper on lead guitar and Donald "Duck" Dunn on bass.)
The Brothers' first LP, 1978's Briefcase Full of Blues, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and went double platinum. The John Landis-directed movie, in which the boys blazed a path of destruction in search of $5,000 to save a Catholic orphanage, featured performances by James Brown, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin. "She didn't like the idea of being in a waitress' uniform," recalls Aykroyd of Franklin's "Think" scene. "She was very shy by nature, if you can believe that."
In its review, THR raved that Brothers was "the funniest and most outrageous movie of the year." The $20 million film ($62 million today) earned $57 million domestically, or $177 million in 2020 dollars.
