In the 1890s, the "free market" in Fall River, Mass., made 1,000 people out of 100,000 rich, so rich they couldn't be convicted of murder even if they killed their parents. Nearly everyone else was poor, their children's legs twisted with rickets, their lungs clotted and wheezy with lint they inhaled working weaving machines.

Time is money. You've heard that old saying. But when it comes to investment, the better way to say it is: Time leverages money. Especially when you don't have to pay taxes on the money you earn.
"Eleanor Rigby" is a song by the Beatles, released on the 1966 album Revolver and as a 45 rpm single. It was written primarily by Paul McCartney, and credited to Lennon-McCartney.

Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

PS: I had no connection to the Internet this morning. We had rain all day yesterday, and last night it was unbelievable. I had forgotten to close my bedroom window, and when I heard the rain, and got up to close it, I thought someone was aiming a hose at the widow, full blast - that's how strong was the force of the rain! I've not seen this before...

If Eleanor Rigby was wearing the face in THIS jar it would
explain why she died alone. Seriously though, that song was
a real bummer. "Why Don't We Do It In The Road?" is much
better.

As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to
active@bartcop.com.
So - to let you know what's going on, the guestbook on bartcop.com is
still open for those who want to write something in memory of Bart.
Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is
overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received.
Anyone wanting to make a donation can click on this the yellow donate
button on bartcop.com
But - I need you all to help keep this going. This note
isn't going to directly reach all of Bart's fans. So if you can repost
it on blogs and discussion boards so people can sign up then when we
figure out what's next we can let more people know. This list is just
over 600 but like to get it up to at least 10,000 pretty quick. So
here's the signup link for this email list.

The discovery that a CNN editor committed 128 instances of plagiarism began with a Google search, a CNN source told TheWrap.
The company said in an editor's note published Friday that it had terminated Marie-Louise Gumuchian, who reported from CNN's London bureau about Africa, Europe and the Middle East, after discovering the plagiarism spread across 50 articles. Seven had to be taken down altogether, and the others rewritten.
The discovery began when a lone copy editor noted some unusual phrasing in one of her stories, and copied it into Google, the CNN source said. It turned out that a story by Reuters, Gumuchian's former employer, was the source of the language.
"She was caught during routine spot checks by a copy editor who I think flagged some of her work because he thought the sentence structure looked familiar. And up came a Reuters piece that looked very similar," the person at CNN said. "He put the sentence into Google and out popped a Reuters piece."
Despite the black eye CNN will suffer, it sounds from the insider's account as if the company does more than many news organizations to root out plagiarism. First, it does regular spot checks. And it runs a plagiarism computer program to catch those who steal others' work. CNN used that program after Google revealed the first red flag.

Tech companies have filed an emergency lawsuit to prevent the Billboard Music Awards from using their patents to project a Michael Jackson hologram at this weekend's show.
Hologram USA Inc. and Musion Das Hologram Ltd. sued Jackson's estate and dick clark productions in federal court over technology known for digitally resurrecting deceased rapper Tupac Shakur at the 2012 Coachella music festival.
A lawyer representing the show's producers and Jackson's estate responded to the suit Friday by stating that if the virtual performance from the King of Pop were blocked, they would be irreparably harmed.
Attorney Michael Feder, representing the show and Jackson estate, said in his filed response that the holographic performance has been planned for months and had been discussed with Alki David, who owns the rights to the technology that creates and projects lifelike images to appear alongside live performers through Hologram USA and Musion.
Motorcyclists and movie fanatics from as far away as Canada have made the pilgrimage to northern New Mexico to celebrate Dennis Hopper and his iconic counterculture film "Easy Rider."
They are gathering Saturday in the dusty, adobe encircled plaza in the community of Ranchos de Taos, 4 miles south of Taos, to kick off what town officials hope will be an annual event - Dennis Hopper Day - with a rally and ride through some of the places made famous in the film.
Saturday would have been the late actor and director's 78th birthday. Hopper lived in Taos - a diverse town known for skiing, art and Hispanic and Native American culture - for years and is buried here.
Town Manager Rick Bellis says the day is aimed at recognizing Hopper's contributions as a resident, a filmmaker, a supporter of the arts and for simply being a "colorful member" of the community.
Paul McCartney came down with a virus and canceled his Tokyo concert Saturday, but he added a performance to make up for the lost show.
He said he felt sick Friday, and that doctors told him Saturday to cancel his appearance that night at the National Stadium in Tokyo.
But McCartney said he should be well enough for Sunday's scheduled concert and Monday's makeup.
Organizers said tickets for Saturday's show are valid for Monday, but a refund will also be offered. Ticket prices range from 13,500 yen ($130) to 17,500 yen ($170), and an extra 67,000 yen ($650) payment allows entry into the sound-check.
Looking for a reason why people hate their cable companies? Well, there are likely several reasons but one of them is undoubtedly the constant stream of price increases and fees that are taking out more and more of consumers' wallets every year. A major new study from the Federal Communications Commission has found that basic cable prices increased by 6.5% throughout 2012 while expanded basic cable prices rose by 5.1% over the same period. In contrast, the general rate of inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index throughout 2012 was just 1.6%, meaning that basic cable prices rose at more than four times the rate of inflation in 2012 while expanded basic cable prices rose by more than three times the rate of inflation.
The FCC also found that cable prices have been growing much more quickly than inflation for a very long time now, as the compound average annual rate for expanded basic cable services between 1995 and 2013 was 6.1% while the compound average annual growth rate for the CPI over that same period was 2.4%. Counterintuitively, the FCC also found that prices for cable services ever since 2009 have been growing faster in areas with "effective competition," which means that there are two cable companies or more operating in the same market, although the study also found that just 25% of cable subscribers live in markets that are effectively competitive.

The lead singer for a heavy metal Christian rock band was sentenced on Friday to six years in prison for pleading guilty to trying to hire a hit man to kill his wife, prosecutors in California said.
Tim Lambesis, 33, lead singer for the band As I Lay Dying, had been in a custody dispute with his wife, Meggan, over their three children in May 2013 when he asked a personal trainer at his gym if he knew anyone who could kill his wife, according to charging documents in the criminal case.
The trainer contacted the San Diego Sheriff's Department, which sent an undercover detective to meet with Lambesis.
As part of a plea agreement with prosecutors, Lambesis admitted that he had paid the undercover detective $1,000 in cash for the murder, with an additional $19,000 to be paid when his wife of eight years was dead.
He also gave the officer photos of his wife, the address of her complex and codes for the security gates, and a list of dates when he would have their three adopted children with him to provide an alibi, according to court documents.

Anheuser-Busch did not discriminate against a former executive by paying her significantly less than a male predecessor, a jury in St. Louis decided Friday.
The jury of seven women and five men deliberated for more than 10 hours over two days before siding with the company, a onetime family business now owned by Belgium-based brewer InBev.
Counting bonuses and stock options, Francine Katz earned about $1 million annually after her 2002 promotion to vice president of communications and consumer affairs and appointment to the company's influential strategy committee.
But Katz's base salary was half that of John Jacob, a former National Urban League president and Anheuser-Busch board member. The company argued that Katz's salary, benefits and bonuses compared favorably to those in similar positions at other large U.S. corporations and that Jacob had considerably more responsibilities, including an informal role as trusted adviser to former CEO August Busch III, whose family of German immigrants founded the iconic maker of Budweiser and Bud Light in the 19th century.
In her two-decade career, Katz, 56, rose from a young corporate lawyer to a role as key strategist and the company's top female executive. She was often the face of her hometown employer, defending Anheuser-Busch from state and federal regulators and anti-alcohol campaigns.

Authorities say a conservative Mississippi blogger went into a nursing home, photographed the bedridden wife of Republican U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran without permission and posted an image online as part of a video.
Rose Cochran, 72, has lived at St. Catherine's Village since 2000 and has dementia.
Clayton Thomas Kelly, 28, of Pearl, was arrested Friday and charged with a felony, exploitation of a vulnerable adult, Madison police said. Kelly remained in the Madison County Detention Center on Saturday on $100,000 bond. It wasn't immediately clear whether he has an attorney.
Cochran's June 3 Republican primary challenger, state Sen. Chris McDaniel, said his campaign has no connection to Kelly.
Kelly's Facebook page includes one photo of Kelly with McDaniel at a campaign meet-and-greet event and another photo of a McDaniel campaign sign. Kelly has a blog called Constitutional Clayton (http://bit.ly/1sEK0iz ), which includes a post that says: "When it comes to Republicans with a bad voting record, you can't get any worse than Thad Cochran. Thad should represent the 'Controlled Opposition' Wing of the Republicans more than John McCain or Lindsey Graham."

Geologist Erin Argyilan's concept of sand dunes was shattered last July when she heard the parents of a 6-year-old boy frantically shouting that their son had been buried alive after falling into a hole.
Argyilan initially thought Nathan Woessner's parents must have simply lost sight of him on Mount Baldy at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore along Lake Michigan, which draws thousands of visitors annually.
"All of my scientific knowledge was leading me to the conclusion that it couldn't happen," said Argyilan, head of Indiana University Northwest's department of geosciences, who was conducting a wind study that day. "... sand dunes are typically dry individual grains of sand, so they stack rather tightly on top of each other. You don't expect for there to be large cavities."
Since July 12, three more holes a foot or less in diameter have been discovered on the 126-foot dune - each lasting a day or less before vanishing - and people have reported seeing holes in the past. Now, officials at parks in Michigan, Oregon, Wisconsin and other states are paying close attention to what Argyilan and three other investigators find, hoping to ensure their own sandy attractions are safe.
There is a working hypothesis of the cause of Mount Baldy's holes: Trees, brush or other structures and debris buried by the dune during the late 1900s became unstable last spring because of wet conditions and collapsed, creating the openings. A ground-penetrating radar survey done last year by the Environmental Protection Agency found 66 anomalous spots beneath the dune, the National Park Service has said.
Two European bison (Bison bonasus) stand together after being relocated, at Armenis, Tarcu Mountains, southwestern Romania, May 17, 2014. The bison, Europe's largest living wild land mammal, has been extinct in the area for 200 years. Seventeen bison were brought here from Sweden, Germany, Italy, Belgium and Romania, in the biggest-ever bison transportation and reintroduction to have taken place in Europe, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Rewilding Europe environmental organisations. It is hoped that the animal will serve as a regional tourism attraction, with a Bison Visitor Centre to be established in the future. Bison shed their winter coats in the warmer months of the year.
