What's up with Woody? (The Times)
He keeps making them, but the films of Woody Allen no longer captivate even the great man himself, James Mottram hears.
Germaine Greer: Moving mountains ... the rush to return the stolen rocks of Uluru (guardian.co.uk)
Australians are probably the only people on earth who will travel for whole days over rough terrain, take a look at a funny-looking rock and then drive all the way back again. They are not the only people who, having achieved their objective, will grab a bit of the very thing they have come to see and take it home with them. Stonehenge has always been in grave danger of being carried away piecemeal by the British.
Roger Moore: The winner of the 'Narnia' sequel? Ben Barnes, by a hair (The Orlando Sentinel)
There's a changing of the guard in the Walden-Disney movie franchise, "The Chronicles of Narnia." The young actors who were the leads in 2005's "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" and in the new film, "Prince Caspian," are giving way to the title character in that second film.

There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat, there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to... The Outer Limits.

From a soft blur to crystal clarity, and that would by D, The Outer Limits, one of the best bits of TV I've ever watched. Good stories, great acting, thoughtful messages.

The "Outer Limits" (D) TV series opened with the words: "There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission."
Now THAT was a real TV show!!
PS: The sun DID shine this morning, the p/grandson played his baseball game well, we are ALL exhausted - life is sweet!
BadtotheboneBob, who's back after aortic aneurysm surgery, replied:
D. The Outer Limits... What a superbly sinister program! Much more so than The Twilight Zone (which was great in its own way, of course)... It debuted in 1963 when I was 10 years old and I never missed an episode. The 'Zinti Misfits' was my favorite. It was the reason I became interested in good science fiction (Asimov, Heinlein, Poul Andersen et al).
And, Gary wrote:
Outer Limits was "controlling transmission" on our B&W TV as my brothers and I gathered around and enjoyed some good sci fi. Must say I prefered the "Zone" however.
I came across this odd-shaped potato the other day and thought maybe I could get something for it on ebay. I had been going through the whole 15-lb. bag o' spuds hoping to find one that looked like Jesus, the Virgin Mary, Dick Cheney or some other mythical creature, but all I got was this boob tater. Maybe your readers would like to suggest names that will help it sell on ebay!

Turning 50 allowed Sharon Stone to revamp her life and rid it of people and things that had dragged her down, the Hollywood star said Friday.
"Anybody who isn't going to be on my side -- I got rid of them," said the Hollywood high-roller.
"I fired the people out of my life who weren't working with me successfully, professionally. I got rid of the people who weren't really my friends. I stopped trying to date the men who didn't really like me -- and I mean even the type of men who weren't healthy for me."
"I wish it didn't take me until now to become honest with that. It's just now that I have the courage to do it and I can't tell you how free I feel."

Picking a winner of the presidential contest is front and center at what's being billed as the largest astrologers' convention in years.
More than 1,500 astrologers from 45 countries have descended on Denver, site of the Democratic National Convention in August, for the "United Astrology Conference: Rockin' the Universe."
The gathering concludes Tuesday with a panel predicting a presidential winner in November.
"More people believe in astrology now," said Lynne Palmer, a former dancer and astrologer since 1957 based in Las Vegas. "Fifty-one years ago, if you mentioned astrology, you had a big fight on your hands. ...Now you can ask, `What's your sign?' and people will tell you."
As gay couples celebrate their newfound right to marry in California and opposition groups rally to fight the ruling, many struggle with this question: Is homosexuality natural?
On this issue, Nature has spoken: Same-sex lovin' is common in hundreds of species, scientists say.
According to University of Oslo zoologist Petter Böckman, about 1,500 animal species are known to practice same-sex coupling, including bears, gorillas, flamingos, owls, salmon and many others.

Peter Phillips, 11th in line to the throne, becomes on Saturday the first of Queen Elizabeth's grandchildren to wed, marrying his Canadian bride Autumn Kelly in drizzly weather at a chapel at the queen's Windsor Castle residence near London.
Phillips, 30, is the queen's eldest grandchild and son of Elizabeth's only daughter, Princess Anne.
Unlike his first cousins, Princes William and Harry -- or his sister, equestrian champion and Beijing Olympics hopeful Zara Phillips -- he has tended to stay out of the limelight.
Phillips and Kelly met in 2003 at the Montreal Grand Prix, when he worked for the Formula 1 racing team BMW Williams and she worked at the BMW hospitality suite.
DNA testing has shown an attack on a family van some blamed on the legendary Lizard Man appears to have been actually done by a domestic dog. Something chewed up the front fender of Bob and Dixie Rawson's van in February. Bite marks were left on the wheel wells and blood was found on the vehicle.
The Item of Sumter reported that a veterinary lab in California tested the blood and found it came from a dog.
Lizard Man became a phenomenon in the area 20 years ago when people began reporting a tall, big-eyed swamp creature. Authorities never figured out exactly what prompted the sightings.

"The Bachelor" will be looking for love all over again on VH1. The lifestyle cable network said Thursday it acquired the full library of ABC's reality competition series.
VH1 -- which has set network records with its own dating reality shows, including "Flavor of Love" and "Rock of Love With Bret Michaels" -- will air the first seven seasons of "Bachelor" from June 1-7, with one season airing each day as part of a marathon.
"Bachelor" debuted on ABC in March 2002; its most recent 12th edition averaged 7 million viewers a week. The VH1 licensing deal also includes "The Bachelorette."
A new Justice Department report praises FBI agents for refusing to join in the U.S. military's abusive questioning of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, Iraq and Afghanistan, but faults the bureau's for responding slowly to complaints from its own agents about the tactics, The New York Times reported on Saturday.
Citing people with knowledge of the still-secret report, expected to be released as early as Tuesday, the Times reported that the department's inspector general's office is said to have concluded that no FBI agents participated in the rough interrogations by the military.
But the report is also expected to take the bureau to task for its slow response to agents' complaints about the tactics, and for its unclear guidelines and training on handling the complaints, the Times said.
The inspector general's office refused to comment on the investigation, which began more than three years ago, and many details remain unknown, the Times said, including whether it will address CIA interrogations that may have been witnessed by FBI agents.

Two Somerset County men are charged with trying to steal live power lines that were still attached to a transformer and utility poles.
Police said Kevin Lee Lytle, 27, and Daniel Jay Basinger, 24, both of Confluence, were shocked during the theft attempt on May 3 in Lower Turkeyfoot Township.
Both were charged Wednesday, but only Basinger was well enough to attend his arraignment on the attempted theft charge.
Police say the incident disrupted power to area residences for about five hours. Penelec Power Co. owns the lines which suffered $1,500 damage.
A giant shrimp living on Australia's Great Barrier Reef can see a world beyond the rainbow that is invisible to other animals, scientists said on Wednesday.
Mantis shrimps, dubbed "thumb splitters" by divers because of their vicious claws, have the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom, capable of seeing colours from the ultraviolet to the infrared, as well as detecting other subtle variations in light.
They view the world in up to 12 primary colours -- four times as many as humans -- and can measure six different kinds of light polarisation, Swiss and Australian researchers reported.
Howard died Friday at the Motion Picture and Television Fund's hospital in Woodland Hills from complications due to Alzheimer's disease.
Born in the Bronx, New York, Howard started his career as a publicist for Broadway shows before directing TV's "Howdy Doody" children's show at age 19.
He went on to produce another children's show "Captain Kangaroo," then became executive producer for "The Barry Gray Radio Show" from 1951 to 1958, the fund said.
In the '60s, Howard moved to Hollywood to pursue a career in film.
