On the HBO series "Girls," Hannah asks her boss at a publishing house for a salary. The 24-year-old has been working as an unpaid intern for over a year, and her parents will no longer support her. When the boss responds in the negative - "I am really going to miss your energy," he coldly says - Hannah notes that another young woman hired as an intern is now getting paid. "Joy Lin knows Photoshop," he explains.
Eddie Deezen: The Three Stooges Take on Hitler (Neatorama)
An actor playing Adolf Hitler -now that's an interesting proposition. As anyone in Hollywood well knows, correct, precise casting can make or break a movie. So let's imagine we're doing a movie about 'Der Fuhrer.' Who should we cast to play him?
Annalee Newitz: A New Translation of The One Russian Science Fiction Novel You Absolutely Must Read (io9)
If you're going to read just one Soviet-era Russian science fiction novel, it should be Arkady and Boris Strugatsky's dark, ambiguous 'Roadside Picnic.' Originally written in the early 1970s, it's back in print in English after 30 years, with a brand-new translation by Olena Bormashenko and a riveting afterword by Boris Strugatsky about how the book was butchered by Soviet censors. It's a seriously intense tale of a man who risks his life and freedom to smuggle artifacts out of mysterious "Zones" where aliens landed.

Lesley Gore (born Lesley Sue Goldstein; May 2, 1946) is an American singer. She is perhaps best known for her 1963 pop hit "It's My Party", which she recorded at the age of 16. Following the hit, she became one of the most recognized teen pop singers of the 1960s.
Gore's first hit was followed by many others, including: "Judy's Turn to Cry" (US #5), the sequel to "It's My Party"; "She's a Fool" (US #5); the protofeminist million-selling "You Don't Own Me", which held at #2 for three weeks behind The Beatles' "I Want To Hold Your Hand"; "That's the Way Boys Are" (US #12); "Maybe I Know" (US #14/UK #20); "Look of Love" (US #27); and Grammy-nominated "Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows" (US #13), from the 1965 movie "Ski Party". Her record producer was Quincy Jones, who would later become one of the most famous producers in American music.
Beginning in 2004, Gore hosted the PBS television series In the Life, which focused on LGBT issues. In 2005, she stated in an interview that she was a lesbian. As of the time of the interview, Gore had been living with her partner for more than 23 years.

Big Yawn, Lesley Gore is AKA Lesley Sue Goldstein. Oh no, she didn't: Birthplace: New York City, and only a few years after me...
I had an agreement with friends, that if they ever saw me wearing this hair style (as EVERYONE did back then), that they were to kill me, right there on the spot...

Ah, my teen years. Lesley Gore. For some strange reason, I liked Lesley Gore. No, I really, really liked her and I hate her type of music, except the stuff she sang. I can't explain it, don't ask. I don't even worry about it any more.

Betty White says she usually keeps her political views private but in this presidential election strongly favors one candidate.
As she prepares to visit the Smithsonian Institution and National Zoo next week, White told The Associated Press she "very, very much favors" President Barack Obama in the election.
The 90-year-old actress said Friday she is very bi-partisan and has stayed away from politics all of her life. She usually never says who she is for or against because she doesn't want to turn off any of her adoring fans.
White says in this year's election, she likes what Obama has done and "how he represents us."

ABC's two bubble midseason drama series are heading in opposite direction. Shonda Rhimes' Scandal is being renewed for a second season, while GCB is being canceled. (ABC's third midseason drama River, has been dead for awhile.)
Veteran Private Practice also is expected to get a renewal for what will likely be the series' final season though that is not official yet. Complicating the negotiations is the fact that Mark Gordon, who produces the series, is also behind the drama pilot Americana, which is at the center of heated talks after word got out that ABC was passing on it.
"Gossip Girl" will give people something to buzz about yet again, and "Nikita" will be back to seek vengeance for another year.
The CW network renewed its hit, scandal-prone series "Gossip Girl" for a sixth season.
The CW has also renewed "Nikita" for a third season, adding to a roster that will include new entries such as "Arrow" and "The Carrie Diaries," as well as returning series such as "Supernatural" and "90210."
The network has also renewed the Rachel Bilson drama "Hart of Dixie," which is preparing to wrap up its maiden season, which has averaged a .7 in the demo
On the downside, the freshman series "Ringer" and "Secret Circle" will not be returning for second seasons. "Ringer," which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar in dual roles, averaged a .8 in the demo, while "Secret Circle," which followed a group of teenagers with supernatural powers, averaged a .9.

A Leica camera prototype made in 1923 fetched 2.16 million euros ($2.79 million) at auction on Saturday, setting a new world record for a camera.
The camera, an exemplar of the pre-production Leica 0-Series, had been expected to go for between 600,000 and 800,000 euros and bidding started at 300,000 euros at the Galerie Westlicht in Vienna.
The hammer fell at 1.8 million euros, and the final price with tax was 2.16 million euros. The buyer chose to remain anonymous.
Only 25 pre-production O-Series were made to test the market for 35mm cameras before full production began in 1925, and just 12 are known still to exist.
One of Facebook's co-founders, Eduardo Saverin, who stands to make a bundle in the social network's share offering has renounced his US citizenship, records showed.
The move by Saverin, who lives in Singapore, could save the Brazilian native a bundle in US taxes.
Saverin, whose public spat with Mark Zuckerberg was featured in the 2010 film "The Social Network," is on a list of names published April 30 by the US Internal Revenue Service of those renouncing US citizenship.
His stake in Facebook after a losing a power struggle with Zuckerberg is believed to be between two and four percent. The website "Who Owns Facebook?" said his share would be worth around $3.4 billion.
US citizens normally pay taxes on all their worldwide income, regardless of where they live. But Saverin would likely escape much of those taxes because Singapore does not tax foreign-sourced income.

A New York memorabilia dealer has settled a lawsuit that had sought to block him from selling 135 letters written by lyricist Ira Gershwin.
The Daily News reports that the settlement between memorabilia dealer Gary Zimet and the daughter of Gershwin's biographer was filed Friday in a Manhattan court.
The biographer's daughter, Carla Jablonski, had asked the court to block Zimet from selling the letters to the Library of Congress for $325,000.
Jablonski said in her lawsuit that the letters must have been stolen from her apartment. She hadn't accused Zimet of the theft.
A reality show featuring Whitney Houston's relatives, including daughter Bobbi Kristina and mother Cissy, is in the works.

The show promises to feature Bobbi Kristina and Cissy, as well as Houston's cousin Dionne Warwick, gospel singer CeCe Winans and other members of the Houston family.

Actor Kevin Costner has donated a bus to the Lead-Deadwood Baseball Association.
The Black Hills Pioneer reports that the 1995 15-passenger Chevy Blue Bird will be used to transport Little Leaguers, the high school team and the American Legion and VFW teams.
Original Deadwood Tour Manager Jan Van Tassel says the donation is appropriate for Costner, who's made movies about baseball and owns businesses in South Dakota.
Association vice president Bob Nelson Jr. says the actor's representative in Deadwood had heard the association needed a vehicle and contacted Costner. Costner, who owns a casino in Deadwood, then offered the bus.

The 31 iron and fiberglass statues bolted atop several buildings are part of the first South American exhibit for British artist Antony Gormley, who has won many awards, among them the prestigious Turner Prize.
The sculptures, based on Gormley's own body, are burnt auburn in color, some with arms slightly bent, others ramrod straight. They appear to stare into the horizon, gazing at the endless sprawl of tall buildings in this city of 20 million people.
The exhibit, "Still Being," officially opens Saturday, runs through July 15 and will also appear in Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia. It includes other works shown in Sao Paulo's Banco do Brasil Cultural Center.
