As for Häyhä, he was awarded five medals after the war, wrote a book about his service, and was occasionally invited to appear at events honoring military service. As a condiment, approximately how many calories are there in a teaspoon of mustard?

Trivia Question from Yesterday

What product was advertised as "Blessed relief for Mother and the other women in the household!"?

      Heinz Ketchup                                                      Source

Tomato ketchup was sold locally by farmers. A man named Jonas Yerks (or Yerkes) is believed to have been the first man to make tomato ketchup a national phenomenon. By 1837, he had produced and distributed the condiment nationally. Shortly thereafter, other companies followed suit. F. & J. Heinz launched their tomato ketchup in 1876. Heinz tomato ketchup was advertised: "Blessed relief for Mother and the other woman in the household!", a slogan which alluded to the lengthy and onerous process required to produce tomato ketchup in the home.        Source

99 Bottles Of Lois Of Oregon On The Wall was first, and correct, with:
Sad to say, but to some, "Blessed relief for Mother and the other women in the household!" comes in a bottle. Yes, a KETCHUP BOTTLE! Ha ha! Sure it does! Heinz 54 (proof) Ketchup to be exact! Introduced in 1876 (the year Custer bought it at the Little Big Horn) Heinz Ketchup proved to be nature's perfect food. Seriously, we never ever needed to invent anything else ever again! Why for the love of god didn't we stop there!?! Dad was satisfied just leering at the long, hard bottle he griped in his manly hand, waiting patiently for it to spurt out delicious, thick sauce. And mom, well, she had Captain Morgan and Sailor Jerry!
P.S. to D.J. Useo: LOL @ your nuts yesterday! And Dale's existential smut! And BttbB...Grossbeaks live in harmony...why can't we?

And, Joe S     replied:
Heinz ketchup was introduced in 1876 as a "Blessed relief for Mother and the other women in the household!" That's all I can find on that subject. We use ketchup quite a bit. When I was young my parents made our own ketchup. We grew most of our own vegetables and fruits and preserved them by canning, drying and later on, freezing. We hunted and fished for meat. We always had deer, partridge, rabbit and many varieties of fish, mostly perch, whitefish and trout.
So my folks made ketchup, sauerkraut, apple butter, maple syrup, pickles, wine and cider. As time went on the home made stuff diminished.

BartCop

Hello Bartcop fans,

As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and provide email lists and groups for those who might put something together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to active@bartcop.com.

So - to let you know what's going on, the guestbook on bartcop.com is still open for those who want to write something in memory of Bart.

I did an interview on Netroots Radio about Bart's passing
( www.stitcher.com/s?eid=32893545 )

The most active open discussion is on Bart's Facebook page.

You can listen to Bart's theme song here

( youtu.be/MySGAaB0A9k )

We have opened up the radio show archives which are now free. Listen to all you want.
( bartcop.com/members )

Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received. Anyone wanting to make a donation can click on this the yellow donate button on bartcop.com

But - I need you all to help keep this going. This note isn't going to directly reach all of Bart's fans. So if you can repost it on blogs and discussion boards so people can sign up then when we figure out what's next we can let more people know. This list is just over 600 but like to get it up to at least 10,000 pretty quick. So here's the signup link for this email list.

Crusade To Stop Comcast

Al Franken

Most consumers are not fond of their cable companies, but comedian turned US Senator Al Franken, a Democrat from Minnesota, really doesn't like Comcast.

Since winning his Senate seat in 2008 in what turned out to be one of the closest elections in Senate history, the former "Saturday Night Live" writer and performer, who in his previous profession rarely shied away from stinging political satire, has kept a relatively low profile in his new job. But two issues that have gotten the senator fired up are big corporate mergers and Net neutrality.

These passions have led the first-term senator to face off with Comcast, the nation's largest cable company -- not just once but now twice. He was one of the strongest opponents against the Comcast-NBC Universal merger, which regulators approved in 2010. And he is one of the only lawmakers on Capitol Hill speaking out against Comcast's $45 billion bid to gobble up Time Warner Cable.

Franken's strong position against consolidation of the media market stems from his days as a writer and performer when he says he witnessed leaders of the major broadcast television markets manipulate Congress to rescind the so-called Financial Interest and Syndication Rules, or fin-syn rules, which were established by the Federal Communications Commission in the early 1970s to prevent the big three television networks from monopolizing the broadcast landscape by prohibiting them from owning any of the programming that they aired in prime-time.

Starting in the 1980s, broadcasters began lobbying Congress and the FCC to relax the rules. After a decade and a half of chipping away at the foundation of these rules, they were finally rescinded entirely by the FCC in 1995. Franken has argued that this became the death of independently produced TV shows.

When High-Tech Meets High Court

U.S.

One U.S. Supreme Court justice referred to Netflix as "Netflick." Another seemed not to know that HBO is a cable channel. A third appeared to think most software coding could be tossed off in a mere weekend.

These and other apparent gaffes by the justices during oral arguments have became a source of bemused derision, as tech aficionados, legal experts and others have taken to social media, blogs, YouTube and other outlets to proclaim the justices black-robed techno-fogeys.

"Everyone who's anyone inside that courtroom is most likely an incompetent Luddite," Sarah Jeong, a 25-year-old Harvard Law School student, wrote on her personal blog following a recent Supreme Court argument dealing with a copyright dispute over TV online startup Aereo.

Parker Higgins, a 26-year-old digital rights advocate who works at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, spliced together audio of the Aereo argument for comic effect and posted it on a sound cloud and at YouTube.

"Sometimes it's just amusing and sometimes it's really troubling," Higgins said. "The justices are just unfamiliar with how the industry works. (They) don't understand how software comes together."

Jon Stewart's Directorial Debut

'Rosewater'

Open Road Films is nearing a deal for U.S. rights to Jon Stewart's directorial debut "Rosewater," an individual familiar with the project told TheWrap.

Stewart took a hiatus from hosting "The Daily Show" to shoot the movie, which is based on Maziar Bahari's book "Then They Came For Me: A Family's Story of Love, Captivity and Survival."

Gael Garcia Bernal and Shohreh Aghdashloo star in the movie, which Scott Rudin produced with Gigi Pritzker of financier OddLot Entertainment.

Story follows BBC journalist Bahari as he leaves his pregnant fiancee in London in June 2009 to cover Iran's presidential elections. He's quickly taken into custody and interrogated by a man whose defining trait was the faint scene of rosewater. Bahari's ordeal lasted 118 days.

Calls Out Israeli Vandals

Amos Oz

Israel's best known writer, Amos Oz, says that Israelis behind a wave of hate crimes against Muslims and Christians are "Hebrew neo-Nazis," Haaretz newspaper reported on its website Saturday.

It quoted the award-winning author as saying terms such as "price tag," widely used to describe attacks on Palestinians and others by Jewish extremists, are sanitised euphemisms.

They are "sweet names for a monster that needs to be called what it is: Hebrew neo-Nazi groups," Haaretz quoted Oz as telling guests Friday at an event marking his 75th birthday.

He said there was a difference between perpetrators of such events in the Jewish state and elsewhere.

"Our neo-Nazi groups enjoy the support of numerous nationalist or even racist legislators, as well as rabbis who give them what is in my view pseudo-religious justification," Haaretz quoted him as saying.

Film Dispute Draws to Peaceful Settlement

Babette's Feast

Perhaps taking some inspiration from Pope Francis, who has called the 1987 Danish film Babette's Feast his favorite, the parties wrestling over ownership rights to the Oscar winner have settled an international dispute.

The film concerns a political refugee from France who repays the kindness of two sisters living in an isolated village in 19th-century Denmark. It was directed by Gabriel Axel, who died this past February.

A year before the film was released, Axel assigned rights to his screenplay to a production company owned by Just Bester. For that, Axel got 5 percent of the revenue generated by the film. For his directorial services, Axel was given an additional 10 percent of net income.

Bester died in 2003, and four years later, the producer's estate sold rights to Babette's Feast for $100,000 to a Cuban-born film producer named Josi Konski.

Konski, who lives in Beverly Hills, had big plans for the film, licensing it to be reissued as part of the "Criterion Collection," but then came an objection from the Danish Film Directors trade association asserting that Axel -- not Konski -- owned the copyright. The basis of such a claim stemmed from some "moral rights" provision of Danish copyright law that potentially allowed a film director to reclaim a movie upon one film company's transfer of ownership to another.

Detergent Pulled In Germany

Ariel

Procter & Gamble has apologized for "any false connotations" after stirring anger in Germany for unintentionally placing a neo-Nazi code on promotional packages for its Ariel laundry detergent.

Outraged shoppers had posted pictures online of Ariel powder boxes featuring a white soccer jersey with a large number "88." The number is sensitive because far-right extremists in Germany often use it as a code to skirt a ban on the use of Nazi slogans in public: since "H'' is the eighth letter of the alphabet, "88" represents the phrase "Heil Hitler." Similarly, "18" is used to stand for "A.H." or Adolf Hitler.

"We very much regret if there are any false associations and distance ourselves clearly from any far-right ideology," company spokeswoman Gabi Hassig said in a statement. The number "88" was intended to show how many loads of laundry buyers would be able to do with one package.

Haessig said the company has stopped shipping the offending powder, as well as a liquid detergent that was being promoted as "Ariel 18." The number also represented the number of loads that could be done, the company said.

Vatican To Beatify

Paul VI

The Vatican on Saturday said it will beatify the late pope Paul VI on October 19 following the Catholic Church's recognition of a supposed miracle attributed to him, which will leave him one step from sainthood.

The apparent miracle identified by the Vatican's Congregation for the Causes of Saints was the healing of a foetus from an otherwise incurable illness.

Italian Giovanni Montini reigned between 1963 and 1978 and presided over reforms from the Second Vatican Council, which aimed to modernise Catholicism.

He was praised for his efforts to seek closer ties with other Christian denominations but his 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae was controversial for spelling out a ban on all forms of artificial contraception.

When Lobbyists Collide

Montana

Montana wildlife managers on Friday backed off a plan to allow ranchers near Yellowstone National Park to kill elk as a disease prevention measure, after the plan sparked criticism and a lawsuit by hunting groups, an official said.

State wildlife commissioners last month approved the pilot project designed to lessen risks of elk infecting cattle in Montana with brucellosis, which can cause cows to miscarry.

The plan to target elk from the area of Yellowstone National Park was backed by the state's influential livestock industry, which fears wild herds of elk and bison exposed to the disease. The wild animals seasonally migrate from Yellowstone into Montana, and ranchers worry that could threaten the state's brucellosis-free status, which allows their cattle to be shipped across state lines without testing.

But the proposal to allow ranchers to kill as many as three elk each during a period when many elk cows are pregnant drew the ire of sportsmen, whose hunting licenses and tags provide the bulk of revenue for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and who have traditionally been the agency's staunchest allies in battles with conservationists over wildlife management.
