Marc Dion: Conservative Deer Still Fear Communism (Guardian)
The animal kingdom has much to teach us, which is why people call you a "sheep" if you don't vote the way they do. They want to establish that you are a sheep, a muncher of grass, a wooly fool, while they are lions, eaters of meat, crackers of bones.
Scott Burns: We Should Have More Stay-at-Home Moms (AssetBuilder)
Moms are leaving the work force and staying home with their kids. So announced a recent and much discussed Pew Research Center study. It observed the continuation of a trend that began in 1999. Today, twenty-nine percent of women with children elect to stay at home, up from 23 percent in 1999.
Terry Savage: 7 Steps to Spring Clean Your Money (Creators Syndicate)
Its time for a spring money cleanup. I'm not suggesting you run your cash through the washing machine. Instead, you might want to invest in a file box and a small home shredder and start getting rid of excess paper that clogs up the view of your finances. Now that you've finally organized enough to finish your taxes, it's the perfect time for a spring money clean up.

The study, which appeared in the April edition of the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, reported that eating seven or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables could decrease your chances of dying from any cause by a whopping 42 percent in comparison with people who consume less than one portion each day. Forty-two percent!
The Garuda is a large mythical bird, bird-like creature, or humanoid bird that appears in both Hindu and Buddhist mythology. Garuda is the mount (vahana) of the Lord Vishnu. Garuda is the Hindu name for the constellation Aquila. The Brahminy kite and Phoenix are considered to be the contemporary representations of Garuda. Indonesia adopts a more stylistic approach to the Garuda's depiction as its national symbol, where it depicts a Javanese eagle (being much larger than a kite).
In Hindu religion, Garuda is a Hindu divinity, usually the mount (vahana) of the Lord Vishnu. Garuda is depicted as having the golden body of a strong man with a white face, red wings, and an eagle's beak and with a crown on his head. This ancient deity was said to be massive, large enough to block out the sun.

Bird.
Encyclopedia Mythica says:
Garuda is the king of the birds. He mocks the wind with the speed of his flight. As the appointed charger of Vishnu he is venerated by all, including humans. Garuda is the son of Kashyap, a great sage, and Vinata, a daughter of Daksha, a famous king. He was hatched from an egg Vinata laid. He has the head, wings, talons, and beak of an eagle and the body and limbs of a man. He has a white face, red wings and golden body. When he was born he was so brilliant that he was mistaken for Agni, the god of fire, and worshipped.
Garuda was born with a great hatred for the evil and he is supposed to roam about the universe devouring the bad, though he spares Brahmins as his parents had forbidden him to eat them. Garuda is also well-known for his aversion to snakes, a dislike he had acquired from his mother, Vinata. There is a story behind this hatred of Garuda's mother. As it is quite interesting it is told hereafter.

Oh, yay, another religion question. Lord Vishnu (a member of
the Hindu holy trinity...why does THAT sound familiar) rode
a BIRD MAN who may or may not have been an inspiration for a

Why not. Vishnu had four arms, which he used to defend the
dharma, and also came in handy when he and the Princess went

personal note, I wish comparative theology was a mandatory
subject in public schools, so all people could realize that
religion was created by CERTAIN HUMANS when the species

hard work, baby. Oh, and maybe you should pay some TRIBUTE
to the gods. Yeah, I'll make sure they get it. You can trust

A one-square-mile South Carolina town with four traffic lights is challenging the mayor's power to strip its lesbian police chief of her badge in what supporters are calling a case of workplace discrimination.
The controversy surrounding the firing of Crystal Moore, 42, has rallied the town of Latta and drawn the interest of national gay rights groups who argue that her case highlights the need to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Moore, a 20-year veteran of the police force and chief for two years, said her job record was clean until Mayor Earl Bullard issued seven reprimands in one day and fired her on April 15.
The town council responded this week with a unanimous vote of confidence in Moore and blocked the mayor from hiring a new chief for 60 days. Residents rallied outside the town hall to show their support and set up a "Stand With Chief Moore" fund.
Bullard, whose reprimands of the police chief included accusing her of running background checks without proper authorization and questioning the authority of a supervisor, said he could not discuss why he let Moore go, but that it was not because she is a lesbian.
In conservative Mississippi, some business owners who support equal treatment for gays and lesbians are pushing back against a new law that bans government from limiting the free practice of religion.
Critics fear the vaguely written law, which takes effect July 1, will prompt authorities to look away from anti-gay actions that are carried out in the name of religious beliefs - for example, photographers refusing to take pictures for same-sex couples because they believe homosexuality is a sin.
Hundreds of businesses, from hair salons to bakeries and art galleries, have started displaying round blue window stickers that declare: "We don't discriminate. If you're buying, we're selling."
The law says government cannot put a substantial burden on religious practices, without a compelling reason. While it does not specifically mention gays or lesbians, "People are going to take it as permission, if you will, to discriminate against people they don't necessarily agree with or like," said Jackson hair salon owner Eddie Outlaw, 42, who went out of state to marry his husband.
"We have a long and well-documented history of discrimination in this state," Outlaw said. "To think there won't be any discrimination is laughable."

There's no mistaking what row Bob Uecker is in now - all the way in the back of the upper deck.
On Friday, the Brewers unveiled a new statue of the longtime radio broadcaster in the last row of the upper deck behind home plate at Miller Park. It's a nod to the popular 1980s Lite beer ''All Stars'' campaign that featured a cast of sports celebrities, including Uecker, who has served as the Brewers radio voice since 1971.
Fittingly, the statue's location features a view partially blocked by a steel beam. Fans can take photos next to the statue for a fee that goes to charity.
Uecker played for the Milwaukee Braves in 1962 and 1963 and had a six-year major league career overall. He also starred in the television show ''Mr. Belvedere'' and the movie ''Major League.''
The NBA is investigating a report of an audio recording in which a man identified as Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling tells his girlfriend not to bring black people to games.
In the recording posted on TMZ, the (married) man questions his girlfriend's association with minorities. TMZ reported the woman, V. Stiviano, who is of black and Mexican descent, posted a picture of herself with Lakers Hall of Famer Magic Johnson on Instagram - which has since been removed.
The man specifically mentioned Magic Johnson on the recording, saying "don't bring him to my games, OK?"
Sterling, a real estate mogul, bought the Clippers in 1981. He is the longest-tenured owner in the NBA since Lakers owner Jerry Buss died last year.
Sterling has been involved in several lawsuits over the years, including ones with discrimination accusations.

Ohio's chapter of Americans For Prosperity, the Koch-brothers-funded activist group, sent out a mailer opposing a funding increase for the Columbus, Ohio zoo. It only seems weird until you remember that AFP is evolving into a de facto political party - one that could reliably count on Grover Norquist's vote.
It's not clear how many people received the mailer that AFP sent to Columbus residents opposing a ballot measure that would provide funding to the city's zoo. (An existing property tax is expiring; the proposed replacement is 67 percent higher, increasing the tax from $21 to $44 a year for a $100,000 house.) The flyer shows a gorilla's hand holding a $100 bill and reads, "Another money grab. Issue 6 will raise your taxes."
It seems silly, national players worrying about funding for a zoo. "THEY BOUGHT A ZOO (ELECTION)?," Politico's Playbook newsletter joked, somewhat predictably. The Columbus Dispatch seemed puzzled: "A national conservative organization has joined local efforts to defeat the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium's tax levy," the paper reports, with a sort of shrug. "I've never heard that they had any interest before in the Columbus Zoo or the people of Franklin County," John Kulewicz, co-chair of the campaign told the paper. "They are playing us."
In November, The Wire wrote about AFP's deliberate plan to get involved in state and local measures as part of an apparent two-part strategy. First, it lets them influence policy decisions, like the tax increase in Columbus, which may help build support. Second, it allows them to build relationships with local elected officials that, over the long term, could help build a network of candidates for higher offices. In November, AFP was working hard in Iowa. Here, it's Ohio. Anything stand out about those states?

A Japanese whaling fleet left port on Saturday under tight security in the first hunt since the UN's top court last month ordered Tokyo to stop killing whales in the Antarctic.
Four ships departed from the fishing town of Ayukawa in the northeast, marking this season's start to a coastal whaling programme not covered by the International Court of Justice's landmark ruling -- which found Japan's Southern Ocean expedition was a commercial activity masquerading as research.
But Tokyo's decision to continue whaling was likely to set off a new battle with critics who had hoped the ruling would bring an end to a slaughter that the Japanese government has embraced as part of the island nation's cultural heritage.
On Tuesday, a new poll showed 60 percent of Japanese people support the country's whaling programme, but only 14 percent eat whale meat. Although not difficult to find in Japan, whale meat is not a regular part of most Japanese people's diet.
However, powerful lobbying forces have ensured Tokyo continues to subsidise the hunt with taxpayers' money.

If you felt a great disturbance in the Force this Friday, that's because there are major changes afoot in the Star Wars universe.
Lucasfilm has announced that all of the books and comics that filled the empty space in the Skywalker story after Return of the Jedi in 1983, hundreds of titles collectively known as the Expanded Universe, will no longer play any part in official Star Wars canon - and they won't stand as precursors to the upcoming movies.
"In order to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an element of surprise and discovery for the audience, Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe," says the official announcement on Starwars.com.
What does that mean? Well, for one thing, the multimillion-selling trilogy by author Timothy Zahn - which started with the no. 1 New York Times bestseller Heir to the Empire in 1991 - no longer happened. Neither its much beloved Imperial villain Grand Admiral Thrawn, nor the popular former assassin Mara Jade, future wife to Luke Skywalker, officially existed in the Star Wars timeline.

A man in a white tank top with a big red heart on the front. Another wearing all blue. A woman with clothing from a St. Louis running store and one who printed "Lauren" on her shirt.
They all had one thing in common, though: Boston Marathon bib No. 14285.
Kara Bonneau logged onto the race's official photo site this week and saw pictures of four other people who ran Monday's race in copies of the bib she earned - and paid for. She posted those pictures on Instagram and asked for help in identifying the unofficial runners, known as bandits.
Now the Boston Athletic Association is investigating and the tight-knit running community is asking whether social media are giving new legs to a tradition that is almost as old as the race itself. With runners bragging about their bibs on Instagram, anyone with a computer can find a bib and print a copy, making banditry even easier at the same time that security threats make it more of a concern.
There is a long and even proud tradition of bandits in the Boston Marathon, with Roberta Gibb running unofficially in 1966 to shatter the ban keeping women from the race. But while adding a few hundred unofficial runners in the race's infancy might have been a minor inconvenience, the growth of the event - and the security needs after last year's bombings - have made banditry a bigger problem.

A documentary film production company has found buried in a New Mexico landfill hundreds of the Atari "E.T." game cartridges that some call the worst video game ever made.
Film director Zak Penn showed one "E.T." cartridge retrieved from the site and said that hundreds more were found in the mounds of trash and dirt scooped by a backhoe.
About 200 residents and game enthusiasts gathered early Saturday in southeastern New Mexico to watch backhoes and bulldozers dig through the concrete-covered landfill in search of up to a million discarded copies of "E.T. The Extraterrestrial" that the game's maker wanted to hide forever.
Most of the crowd left the landfill before the discovery, turned away by strong winds that kicked up massive clouds of dust mingled with garbage. By the time the games were found, only a few dozen people remained. Some were playing the infamous game in a make-shift gaming den with a T.V. and an 1980's game console in the back of a van, while others took selfies beside a life-size E.T. doll inside a DeLorean car like the one that was turned into a time machine in the "Back To The Future" movies.
An E.T. doll is seen while construction workers prepare to dig into a landfill in Alamogordo, N.M., Saturday, April 26, 2014. Producers of a documentary are digging in the landfill in search of millions of cartridges of the Atari 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' game that has been called the worst game in the history of videogaming. A New York Times article from 1983 reported that Atari cartridges of "E.T. The Extraterrestrial" were dumped in the landfill in Alamogordo.

Inside the long-awaited package, six pages of government paperwork dryly affirmed Carol Tapanila's anxious request. But when Tapanila slipped the contents from the brown envelope, she saw there was something more.
"We the people...." declared the script inside her U.S. passport - now with four holes punched through it from cover to cover. Her departure from life as an American was stamped final on the same page: "Bearer Expatriated Self."
With the envelope's arrival, Tapanila, a native of upstate New York who has lived in Canada since 1969, joined a largely overlooked surge of Americans rejecting what is, to millions, a highly sought prize: U.S. citizenship. Last year, the U.S. government reported a record 2,999 people renounced citizenship or terminated permanent residency; most are widely assumed to be driven by a desire to avoid paying taxes on hidden wealth.
Some call themselves "accidental Americans," who recall little of life in the U.S., but long ago happened to be born in it. Others say they renounced because of politics, family or personal identity. Some say signing away citizenship was a huge relief. Others recall being sickened by the decision.
