Aside from the low-tax status of the United States, it's interesting to note that all the European crisis countries have relatively low taxes by European standards.
Paul Krugman's Blog: Insincerely Yours (Creators Syndicate)
It's truly amazing that so many commentators - people who presumably know something about the relationship or lack thereof between what politicians say and what they do - are willing to accept at face value claims of deep, sincere concern about the deficit from people whose actual priorities are demonstrated by their absolute unwillingness to sacrifice anything they want in the name of deficit reduction.

It's that time of year again, the time of year when high school seniors who have done everything right their whole lives discover that it wasn't good enough to get them into the colleges they dreamed of attending. Ditto for college seniors applying to graduate school.

Did you see that the right-winger who organized last summer's national bus tour against same-sex marriage - who actually drove the bus - has changed his mind? On his tour, he wound up actually meeting the gays who were following his bus in protest. Once he came to see them as nice people like him with the same kinds of hopes and fears as anyone else, he decided they should have the same rights and respect as anyone else.
Susan Pigg: Socialites Alan and Andy celebrate a golden anniversary (Toronto Star)
Yet in a life that's been rich with famous friends, fine art and dazzling diamonds, Toronto socialites Alan and Andy - Alan Hanlon, 76, and Andy Body, 79 - also have one priceless treasure. Today they celebrate an extraordinary anniversary that is rare among straight couples and virtually unheard of in the gay community.

"I can tell you what the people in rural communities are not doing with their free time: listening to public radio," said Laura Ingraham, who comes up with such opinions from her home in the Washington, D.C., metro area. Like a lot of the Beltway magpies who flock from one partisan clack-fest to the other without bothering with facts, Ingraham is clueless on this topic.

Blue corn (also known as Hopi maize) is a variety of maize grown in the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico, particularly in the American states of Arizona and New Mexico.
It was originally developed by the Hopi, and remains an essential part of Hopi dishes like piki bread. Blue corn meal is a corn meal that is ground from whole blue corn and has a sweet flavor. It is also a staple of New Mexican cuisine.

Okay, it was the Native American Hopi who originally developed the blue corn...
But, you have to admit they ARE corny...

In addition to its sharply different color, blue corn has several nutritional advantages over standard yellow or white corn varieties. It contains 20% more protein and has a lower glycemic index than white corn. When used to make tortillas, blue corn produces a sweeter, nuttier taste than yellow or white corn, and is a more complete protein source.

Former President Bill Clinton returned to his childhood home on Saturday to celebrate its dedication as a national historical site.
Clinton was born in Hope's Julia Chester Hospital in 1946 and lived the first four years of his life in the two-story wood frame house with his grandparents, who owned the house, and his mother, the late Virginia Kelley. His father, William Blythe, died before Clinton was born.
During his 1992 campaign, Clinton used the name of his home town as a campaign slogan, saying he grew up in a "place called Hope." He was often called "The Man From Hope" and used the word 10 times in his 1992 Democratic Party acceptance speech.
The house sits near the quaint downtown and on the edge of a train track. A train whistle interrupted Clinton's speech on Saturday. He said he listened to them as a child and it was a welcoming sound.
The Clinton Birthplace Foundation bought the house in 1992 and began raising money to restore it. The home opened to the public in 1997.

Michelle Obama will appear live on the "Gayle King Show" on April 19.
In their first appearance on the show (which airs at 10 a.m. ET on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network), the first lady and Dr. Jill Biden will discuss their military family support campaign, the Joining Forces Initiative.
A week later, Michelle and her husband, President Barack Obama, will tape their first joint interview on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" since 2006. It will air on May 2. Winfrey's show goes dark at the end of that month after 25 years on air.
Jerry Van Dyke had to push his older sibling, Dick, into joining him on stage in "The Sunshine Boys" but says the pair are making magic together.
"We have that chemistry just from being brothers," said Jerry Van Dyke. "It's our first time on stage together, and it's such a thrill at our age to do this."
In the Neil Simon comedy at a Malibu theater, the siblings play aged ex-vaudevillians who reunite for a TV special despite a longtime feud.
Opening night Wednesday "worked like magic" and drew big audience laughs, Jerry Van Dyke said. The scenes in which the bickering comedians tussle were crowd-pleasers, he said, especially given their ages: Jerry is 79 and Dick is 85.

Hundreds of protesters have marched through central London to call for a public inquiry into the death of British reggae star Smiley Culture.
The singer, whose real name was David Emmanuel, died of a single stab wound through the heart while police officers were executing a search warrant at his home.
His family has been told he stabbed himself while making a cup of tea despite the presence of officers in his home. They say the police explanation of his death is "bizarre."
Emmanuel, who was 48 when he died March 15, shot to fame in the 1980s with hits such as "Cockney Translation" and "Police Officer."
The world-renowned Philadelphia Orchestra, long considered one of the best in the nation, will be filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection - an apparent first in recent history for a major U.S. orchestra.
Board chairman Richard Worley said members made a nearly unanimous vote Saturday to file for reorganization in a federal bankruptcy court in Philadelphia after a "long meeting, thoughtful meeting, emotional meeting."
Allison Vulgamore, president and chief executive officer, also cited a "tremendous decline" in audiences over the past five years.
Officials stressed, however, that concerts would go on as scheduled, including the evening's performance of a Mahler symphony. And they said a revitalization campaign was planned to increase revenues by about two-thirds and bring in new art and audiences.
They didn't have Army haircuts. Their boots didn't shine. And their uniforms didn't look right.
U.S. Army veteran Joaquin Lim sensed something was amiss with the troop that had popped up at civic events in Southern California's Chinese-American communities. At a flag raising ceremony honoring a Chinese holiday, the Walnut city councilman stopped one of the recruits and asked to see his military ID.
"There were actually typos on the ID card," Lim said. "Right away, I knew something was wrong."
Those suspicions came into the spotlight Tuesday when authorities arrested the so-called "supreme commander" of the U.S. Army/Military Special Forces Reserve unit and charged him with duping Chinese immigrants into thinking they had truly enlisted in the American armed forces.
Prosecutors say Yupeng Deng, 51, recruited 100 other Chinese immigrants from as far away as Northern California and even Georgia to enlist in his Southern California group - at the cost of several hundred dollars - to help improve their chances of obtaining green cards and U.S. citizenship.

A massive wall-painting depicting a Mormon temple in flames along with a catholic monk, police car and a scantily clad woman has sparked a free speech debate in this conservative, heavily Mormon Salt Lake City suburb.
The colorful mural painted on a parking lot wall greets customers at the Canyon Inn Restaurant and Lounge in Cottonwood Heights, a city of 35,000 near the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon where ski resorts Solitude and Brighton are located.
"Art work I do, every year I repaint the wall. This year it has created a lot of controversy. It's supposed to. Art is supposed to be provoking and make people think what is going in the community. I hope it continues to do so," James Stojack, owner of the restaurant, said in an interview.
Stojack says he can't draw and only gave the artist ideas about what to paint, adding that the wall serves as a thinking art piece and as advertising.
Although many American workers have embraced social media sites such as Facebook or LinkedIn, they are uncomfortable about sharing information about their sex lives or salaries, according to a new survey.
The poll of 2,118 adults showed that slightly more than three out of four participate in a social network site but they lean more towards posting things like restaurant reviews or vacation photos.
The Harris online poll also showed that about 55 to 70 percent of people did not mind sharing non-personal information, but they were more guarded about their children's activities and their household purchases.
Only two percent said they were comfortable sharing information about their sex life or their salary details. Employees were also more inclined to share relationship status than employment status.
