Anecdotes

Fathers

• Burt Strug met his future wife, Melanie, one summer. Within one month he had convinced her to transfer to his college — and within three months he had convinced her to marry him. Today, he tells their daughter, elite gymnast Kerri Strug, “If you ever do something that dumb for a boy, I’ll strangle you.”

• Tito Fuentes, a major-league infielder, disliked knock-down pitches for what may — or may not — be a very good reason: “They shouldn’t throw at me. I’m the father of five or six kids.”

Food

• William M. Gaines, the publisher of MAD magazine, loved food — and lots of it. One day, he treated the staff to a meal at the Gotham Bar and Grill, and when he ordered, he ordered LOTS of food. In fact, the number of entrees ordered at a MAD dinner usually numbered twice the number of diners. For one thing, Mr. Gaines would order a few entrees for himself only, as well as a few that were simply placed on the table so that anyone could help himself if he were so inclined. On this occasion, he and his staff ordered so many appetizers, entrees, desserts, and wines that a waitress appeared on an errand from the kitchen. “The chef sent me out,” she said. “He wants to know, Who are you?” On one occasion, the wait staff brought over an additional table — not for extra diners, but simply to have room for all the food and drink that had been ordered. (This occasion turned into a four-hour feeding frenzy.) MAD writer Dick DeBartolo was a dessert freak, and at his first meal with Mr. Gaines, he told him that he always looked at the dessert menu first, so he would know whether to order a heavy or a light entree. Mr. Gaines said to order whatever he wanted for the entree and let him take care of dessert. When it was time for dessert, Mr. Gaines ordered one of every choice, so the waiter brought over an entire dessert cart and left it.

• When figure skater Sasha Cohen was a little girl, her parents would not let her eat junk food at home, so she had to get spoiled at her grandparents’ house. She remembers her grandmother’s brand of discipline: “Sasha, you cannot have ice cream if you do not finish your doughnut first!” Sasha was a lover of ice cream, even at age 5, so she loved her grandmother’s other strict rule: No child is allowed to eat ice cream more than three times per day. Her parents would sometimes indulge her with a kid’s ice cream cone away from the house, and Sasha remembers once requesting of the salesperson, “Please make my kid’s cone extra large.” He thought that this was funny, and so the scoop that he gave her was huge. She once ordered ice cream in a cup at a restaurant, but the server forgot to bring her a spoon. No problem. Young Sasha knew that spoons were located in a big container nearby, so she went to the container, which was high above her head, and she started pulling on it. Soon, the container and lots of silverware tumbled noisily to the ground. Everyone in the restaurant grew quiet, but little Sasha triumphantly held a spoon up and announced, “I got it!” The people in the restaurant applauded.

• Queen Kaahumanu was the first feminist of Hawaii. When she was born, women on the islands had to live by many rules. For example, women were not allowed to eat with the men, and women were not allowed to eat bananas, or pork, or coconuts, or baked dog. However, when her husband, King Kamehameda, died, Queen Kaahumanu decided to make a few changes. First, she became the joint ruler of the islands, along with Liholiho, her husband’s son by another wife. Then she and Liholiho’s mother started to change society by doing such things as eating bananas in front of the new king. The new king was open to the changes, and soon, the new king started eating at the same table with them. The Hawaiian people also welcomed the changes and made great changes in their way of living, including destroying many wooden idols.

Trivia Question from Yesterday

The first time an Atlantic tropical cyclone was officially designated using a masculine name was July, 1979. What was the name of that noteworthy hurricane?

       Hurricane Bob                                                      Source

Hurricane Bob was the first Atlantic tropical cyclone to be officially designated using a masculine name after the discontinuation of Joint Army/Navy Phonetic Alphabet names. Bob brought moderate damage to portions of the United States Gulf Coast and areas farther inland in July 1979. The storm was the first hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico to form in the month of July since 1959, and was the fifth tropical cyclone to form during the annual hurricane season. Though the origin of Bob can be traced back to a tropical wave near the western coast of Africa in late June, Bob formed from a tropical depression in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico on July 9. Tracking in a general northward direction, favorable conditions allowed for quick strengthening. Less than a day after formation, the system reached tropical storm intensity, followed by hurricane intensity on July 11. Shortly after strengthening into a hurricane, Bob reached its peak intensity with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (121 km/h) and a minimum barometric pressure of 986 mbar. At the same intensity, Bob made landfall west of Grand Isle, Louisiana, and rapidly weakened after moving inland. However, the resulting tropical depression persisted for several days as it paralleled the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. On July 16, the system emerged into the western Atlantic, where it was subsequently absorbed by a nearby low-pressure area.

Widespread offshore and coastal evacuations took place along the United States Gulf Coast in preparation for Hurricane Bob. Effects from the hurricane on the United States were mostly marginal and typical of a minimal hurricane. The cyclone produced a moderate storm surge, damaging some coastal installments and causing coastal inundation. Strong winds were also associated with Bob's landfall, though no stations observed winds of hurricane force. The winds downed trees and blew out windows, in addition to causing widespread power outages. Heavy rainfall was also reported in some locations, peaking at 7.16 in (182 mm) in Louisiana. Further inland, the torrential rains led to flooding in Indiana, resulting in more considerable damage as opposed to the coast. Bob also spawned eight tornadoes, with two causing significant damage. Overall, Bob was responsible for one death and $20 million in damage.        Source

BRUCE'S RECOMMENDATION

BANDCAMP MUSIC

BRUCE'S RECOMMENDATION OF BANDCAMP MUSIC

Music: "Jack the Ripper [Link Wray Cover]"

Album: THE END OF TEENAGE

Artist: Charlie Megira and The Bet She'an Valley Hillbillies

Artist Location: Israel

Info: “The bastard love child of Elvis and Lux Interior, Israeli guitarist Charlie Megira brewed a heady amalgam of ’50s trash rock, surf tremolo, and reverb-drenched goth […]. Armed with only an Eko guitar, a black tuxedo, and his signature wrap-around shades, Charlie Megira was a mold-breaking artist who disintegrated while we were all staring at our phones.”

Megira recorded and released several versions of THE END OF TEENAGE, all with his backing duo the Beth She’an Valley Hillbillies. Tracked between 2013-2015, Teenage finds bassist The Dead Girl and percussionist Corso locked into the same wave, with Megira tube riding between them with his sinewy guitar style. The surf eventually crumbles into madness. Teenage ends.”

“His was a music both familiar and entirely alien at once. It touches on corners of darkness, an isolation both lonely and sweet, all wrapped in a cold glow that draws the listener into each note, each melancholy melody triggering unrecorded experiences. His various projects put out music which began as a junction point between Link Wray’s surf guitar and the theatrical psychobilly of The Cramps, took a turn towards goth-inflected post-punk, and towards the end of his career would sojourn back into his earlier musical fascination with late 1950s and early 1960s rock ‘n’ roll.

“The Israeli guitarist recorded seven albums worth of material in 15 years during his all-too-brief 44 trips around the sun.”

Price: $1 (USD) for track; $5 (USD) for five-track album.”

Genre: Surf Instrumental

‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’

No matter what happens at the upcoming Academy Awards, the new Sacha Baron Cohen film is already a winner.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (UK/USA, 2020) has broken the Guinness World Record for longest title for a film nominated for an Oscar. In the words of its title character, “Very nice!”

The 110 characters in the Borat title – usually shortend to Borat Subsequent Moviefilm – was nominated for two Oscars, Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay).

The previous record holder for longest title for a film nominated for an Oscar was Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines or How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 hours 11 minutes (UK, 1965) with 85 characters. That film did not win its nomination for Best Writing Story and Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.

Storage Units Targeted by Thieves

Beyoncé

Beyoncé’s Los Angeles area storage units were looted, with the burglars reportedly nabbing over $1 million in goods.

According to TMZ’s law enforcement sources, three of the singer’s storage units were broken into twice this month, with the offenders stealing her pricey handbags and dresses. Her production company Parkwood Entertainment was apparently renting out the storage units, with the stolen pieces from the first robbery appearing to belong to Bey. The burglars hit the units one time and then returned within a week and ransacked three units in the same storage space, taking handbags, kid’s toys, and photos that are the property of one of Beyoncé’s stylists.

Other celebrities have been targets of similar thefts, with TMZ noting that storage space burglaries are growing. Culprits also hit Miley Cyrus’ storage space, making off with clothes, family photos, and mementos.

At the top of the year, burglars broke into Diddy’s L.A. area home in Toluca Lake, but it was unclear if anything was taken. He’s rarely at that residence since his former partner Kim Porter passed away in 2018. Dr. Dre’s L.A. home was also targeted while he was hospitalized earlier this year for a brain aneurysm. However, burglars were unsuccessful in their attempts to enter the property.

Massive Overall Deal With HBO

George R. R. Martin

George R. R. Martin has inked a new deal with HBO that will allow the author to develop more series for the network and its HBO Max streaming service, including multiple Game of Thrones spinoffs.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Martin’s new pact with HBO spans five years and is worth mid-eight figures. The news comes just weeks after HBO revealed that at least five Game of Thrones spinoffs and prequels are in the works, and ensures Martin’s continued input on the in-development series.

Of the many Game of Thrones-related series in the works, only one has so far been green-lit and will reportedly go into production next month: House of the Dragon, based on Martin’s 2019 novel Fire & Blood, takes place 300 years before the events of the acclaimed HBO series and focuses on the House Targaryen; before the series even films, a spinoff called The Sea Snake is already among the potential new GoT projects, the Hollywood Reporter writes.

Non-GoT projects that Martin has in development include series adapted from Nnedi Okorafor’s post-apocalyptic novel Who Fears Death and Roger Zelazny’s fantasy novel Roadmarks, with Martin set to executive produce both shows.

While Martin’s HBO partnership is good news for fans of Game of Thrones, readers of the author’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series will likely fret about how the overall deal will impact the saga’s perpetually delayed sixth installment The Winds of Winter; in February, Martin said that while 2020 was a productive year for the novel, “I still have hundreds of more pages to write to bring the novel to a satisfactory conclusion. That’s what 2021 is for, I hope,” he wrote to fans.

Fight Over Warhol Art

Lynn Goldsmith

A U.S. appeals court sided with a photographer Friday in a copyright dispute over how a foundation has marketed a series of Andy Warhol works of art based on one of her pictures of Prince.

The New York-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the artwork created by Warhol before his 1987 death was not transformative and could not overcome copyright obligations to photographer Lynn Goldsmith. It returned the case to a lower court for further proceedings.

In a statement, Goldsmith said she was grateful to the outcome in the 4-year-old fight initiated by a lawsuit from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. She said the foundation wanted to “use my photograph without asking my permission or paying me anything for my work.”

“I fought this suit to protect not only my own rights, but the rights of all photographers and visual artists to make a living by licensing their creative work — and also to decide when, how, and even whether to exploit their creative works or license others to do so,” Goldsmith said.

Warhol created a series of 16 artworks based on a 1981 picture of Prince that was taken by Goldsmith, a pioneering photographer known for portraits of famous musicians. The series contained 12 silkscreen paintings, two screen prints on paper and two drawings.

Hypocritic Oath

Arkansas

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R-Delusional) on Friday signed into law legislation allowing doctors to refuse to treat someone because of religious or moral objections, a move opponents have said will give providers broad powers to turn away LGBTQ patients and others.

The measure says health care workers and institutions have the right to not participate in non-emergency treatments that violate their conscience. The new law won't take effect until late this summer.

Opponents of the law, including the Human Rights Campaign and the American Civil Liberties Union, have said it will allow doctors to refuse to offer a host of services for LGBTQ patients. The state Chamber of Commerce also opposed the measure, saying it sends the wrong message about the state.

Hutchinson opposed a similar measure in 2017 that failed before a House committee. But he said the law he signed was narrower and limits the objections to particular health care services, not treating specific types of people.

Murder By Hammer

Bizarre

In the wake of a mass shooting that left 10 people dead in her state, freshman Congressman Lauren Boebert (R-Sock Puppet) brought some insensitive snark to an interview on the topic by suggesting hammers are more lethal than firearms.

“In America, we see more deaths by hand, fist, feet, even hammers, and, you know, are we going to start legislating that away or are we going to be like these other countries who even ban knives?” Boebert said, “I mean, if hammers are the cause of more death than firearms, then maybe we need to start having background checks on hammers. I mean, look out, Black and Decker.”

According to the data platform Statista, annual deaths caused by firearms (handguns and other types) in 2019 numbered 9,649; annual deaths from personal weapons (hands, fists, feet, etc.) and blunt objects (clubs, hammers, etc.) numbered 997. That means guns killed 8,652 more people in 2019 than personal weapons and blunt objects combined.

So when Boebert says that we see “we see more deaths by hand, fist, feet, even hammers” than guns, she is lying. So don’t worry that you’ll have to wait for a background check to clear the next time you want to buy a hammer at Lowes.

The congressman — who has previously boasted about carrying a gun on Capitol grounds and who refused to allow Capitol Police to search her bag before she entered the House chamber last month — was also mocked on social media when users noticed she removed her infamous background that showed several rifles on display during a virtual House committee hearing.

Lost Continent

'Zealandia'

A new ocean-mapping expedition is drawing the boundaries of Zealandia, a submerged "lost continent" that hosts New Zealand and the territory of New Caledonia in the South Pacific.

Zealandia broke off from the supercontinent Gondwana between 79 million and 83 million years ago. Except for New Zealand and New Caledonia, this fragment of continental crust now sits on the ocean floor. It's not the only bit of continental crust that's detached from a larger continent, but it is the largest at 1.9 million square miles (4.9 million square kilometers). That's six times larger than the next-largest continental fragment, the microcontinent of Madagascar.

Zealandia, also known as Te Riu-a-Maui in Maori, was assigned continental status in 2017. Since then, researchers have been working to map the lost continent — no easy feat, as 94% of it is under water.

Now, Derya Gürer, an earth scientist at the University of Queensland in Australia, and her colleagues have collected new data on the northwestern edge of Zealandia, which is located offshore in Queensland's Coral Sea Marine Park. The researchers spent 28 days aboard the vessel Falkor exploring the region, mapping 14,285 square miles (37,000 square km).

The area between the Australia plate and the Zealandia plate is likely very complicated, Gürer said. There are probably several microcontinents submerged there, all of which splintered off the main continental masses when Australia broke free of Gondwana. (The supercontinent encompassed what is today South America, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Zealandia, Arabia and the Indian subcontinent.) These fragments of continental crust are different from the surrounding oceanic crust of the seafloor, which is denser and thinner than continental crust.

Alaska Costco Shoppers

Ravens

Some Alaska Costco shoppers said they've had their groceries stolen by ravens in the store parking lot.

Matt Lewallen said he was packing his groceries into his car in the parking lot of an Anchorage Costco when ravens swooped in to steal a short rib from his cart, the Anchorage Daily News reported Friday.

“I literally took 10 steps away and turned around, two ravens came down and instantly grabbed one out of the package, ripped it off and flew off with it,” Lewallen said.

Lewallen said the piece of meat was about 4-by-7 inches (10-by-18 centimeters) large — a sizable meal for a sizable bird.

“They know what they’re doing; it’s not their first time,” Lewallen said. “They’re very fat so I think they’ve got a whole system there.”

And once he got back home, he noticed that one of the ravens had taken a poke at another rib but did not rob it.

Plans Pensions For Dogs, Horses

Poland

They locate survivors in collapsed buildings, track down fugitives, foil drugs and explosives smugglers and help control rowdy crowds. All in exchange for food and lodging — and an occasional pat on the head.

But when retirement time comes, state care ends for the dogs and horses that serve in Poland's Police, Border Guard and Fire Service. They are given away, with no safeguards for their future welfare.

Following appeals from concerned service members, the Interior Ministry has proposed new legislation that would give these animals an official status, and paid retirement to help cover the often costly care bills their new owners face.

Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski described the draft law as a “moral obligation” which should get unanimous backing when presented in Parliament for approval later this year.

The new law would affect some 1,200 dogs and more than 60 horses currently in service.
