Susan Estrich: The G Word (creators.com)
It's easy to assume that the worst place to be in a campaign that's going through tough times is right in the middle of it. At least you're not Hillary, people say to me all the time. But in my experience, the hardest place to be in a hard campaign is not right in the middle. I've been there, and it can be eerie and strange, but you rarely get as depressed as you do when you're one step removed. Maybe that's a good thing.

Planet of the apes (music.guardian.co.uk)
Their music is full of wit, but Arctic Monkeys always seemed sullen and grumpy in public. After this week's show-stealing turn at the Brit awards, Dorian Lynskey thinks Sheffield's mischief-makers are finally finding their voice.
In the movie "Some Like it Hot" (1959), what was the name of the 'all-girl' band?
A: Sugar Cane and the Honeypots
B: Sheboygan Sue and the Red Hot Mommas
C: Sweet Sweet Sugar and the Canes
D: Styling Sue and Her Moneymakers
E: Sweet Sue and the Society Syncopaters
Source
DanD was first, but wrong, reasoning:
Well, it looks like the reasoned approach of critical thinking doesn't do
the job effectively, so let's go all neo-con on this and just keep
guessing the letter "A" until random chance possibly produces success.
Either that or it's "C", because the censors might get all squirrel-ly at the narcotically suggestive, sexual imagery of sugar canes and honey POTs.
mj was second, and correct, observing:
E. Sue was extremely concerned that her musicians be classy young women, or at least perceived as such, which is one reason she hired the two graduates of the Sheboygan Conservatory to boost the image. I think Sugar Cane was M M's character.
Alan J replied:
Sweet Sue and the Society Syncopaters
Marian the Teacher answered:
E. Sweet Sue and the Society S.. forget how to spell it. What a funny movie it is!!
Sally said:
"Sweet Sue and the Society Syncopators" (E) was the name of the 'all-girl' band in the movie, "Some Like it Hot."
"Sweet Sue" was no bargain, "having already seen thirty summers and a few hard winters." Sugar Kane (MM) was only the vocalist you see...
Joe S ("It's not how long it takes, it's who's taking you."
~ Marilyn Monroe as Sugar Kane) replied:
The answer should be A: Sugar Cane and the Honeypots, but it's not. The correct answer is E: Sweet Sue and the Society Syncopaters.

Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and Peal Jam have contributed tunes to the anti-war soundtrack for a documentary about a U.S. soldier paralyzed in Iraq.
The 30-song, two-disc album "Body of War: Songs That Inspired an Iraq War Veteran" will be released March 18 via Warner Music's Sire Records label. All proceeds from the sale of the album will benefit Iraq Veterans Against the War.
"Body of War" focuses on Tomas Young, an Army soldier paralyzed upon arriving in Iraq. It will open on March 13 in Austin, Texas, and expand nationally in subsequent months. Talk show veteran Phil Donahue directed the film with Elaine Spiro.
Springsteen contributed "Devils & Dust," and Neil Young "The Restless Consumer." Other tracks include "Yo George" from Tori Amos, "Son of a Bush" from Public Enemy, and "Bushonomics" from Talib Kweli & Cornel West.
"Juno," a runaway hit comedy about a wisecracking pregnant teen, picked up the top prize at the Spirit Awards, the independent film community's version of the Oscars, on Saturday.
The movie was named best feature, while Canadian actress Ellen Page won the female lead award for her role as the titular heroine, and former stripper Cody Diablo won for first screenplay.
The only category "Juno" missed out on was best director, which went to Julian Schnabel, the pop artist who made the French-language drama "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly."
Other winners included Philip Seymour Hoffman in the male lead category for his role as a son dealing with an ailing father in "The Savages." The film's director, Tamara Jenkins, also won the screenplay award.
The Irish musical romance "Once" was named best foreign film. Its director, John Carney, recalled that the movie was made with "no permits, money or food."

Eddie Murphy and Lindsay Lohan were named the worst actors of 2007 at the Golden Raspberry Awards on Saturday for two movies that dominated the mock awards created to spoof the Oscars.
For their lack of acting prowess, the veteran comic and the young actress with the hard-living reputation each won three gold spray-painted Razzie trophies worth $4.89.
The awards are presented by the Golden Raspberry Foundation, which announced its winners one day before the sometimes pompous Academy Awards presentation ceremony.
Actor Sir Anthony Hopkins has unveiled a nine foot high bronze statue in tribute to the late comedian Tommy Cooper.
Sir Anthony recreated some of Cooper's best gags to the delight of the crowd who, had gathered in Cooper's home town of Caerphilly in South Wales to see the unveiling.
The statue cost £45,000 to make and was raised by the local Tommy Cooper society, which campaigned for many years to raise money for the tribute.
He died in April 1984 of a massive heart attack after collapsing on stage during a live TV broadcast from Her Majesty's Theatre in London.
As a child growing up in the 1940s, Charles Blockson was once told by a white teacher that black people had made no contributions to history.
Even as a fourth-grader, Blockson, who is black, knew better. So he began collecting proof.
Today, the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection at Temple University contains more than 30,000 historical items, some dating to the 16th century. It includes Paul Robeson's sheet music, African Bibles, rare letters and manuscripts, slave narratives, correspondence of Haitian revolutionaries and a first-edition book by W.E.B DuBois.
The fact that it's at a mainstream university makes it unique among large black historical collections, said Michele Gates Moresi, curator of collections at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Many prominent collections are at historically black colleges, such as Howard University's Moorland-Spingarn Research Center in Washington, D.C., she said.

Recent reports have trumpeted a supposed reunion in the works for the Kinks. But Ray Davies, frontman of the British Invasion band, has told Billboard that fans shouldn't get their hopes up just yet.
Davies acknowledged that he's had reunion discussions with the members of the Kinks' original lineup -- his brother, guitarist Dave Davies, bassist Pete Quaife and drummer Mick Avory. But "it depends on if Dave and I get together," he said, acknowledging that the younger Davies is still recovering from a stroke he suffered in 2004.
The problem: Dave Davies seems to want no part of a reunion, having posted on his Web site that "it would be like a poor remake of 'Night of the Livin (sic) Dead"' and declaring that Ray has been doing "Karaoke Kinks shows since 1996," when the band last worked together.
Ray's response: "He's getting well enough to shout at me. That's a good sign."

Will Smith wasn't nominated for an Oscar this year, but his role in "I Am Legend" has earned a different "academy" award - from the cadets at the U.S. Military Academy.
Smith was named the first winner of the Cadet Choice Movie Award, which was designed to honor the fictional character that best personifies West Point leadership qualities on the silver screen.
Smith's character in the film, Army virologist Dr. Robert Neville, is the lone survivor of a zombie-making virus that devastates Manhattan.
Runners-up included King Leonidas of "300," portrayed by Gerard Butler, and John McClane of "Live Free or Die Hard," portrayed by Bruce Willis.

Italian Leni Riefenstahl Guiseppe Tornatore and France's Leni Riefenstahl Patrice Leconte, an Oscar nominee for his film "Ridicule," also directed shorts for the project, which will have its premiere on Sunday.

The Black Crowes are lashing out at Maxim magazine for reviewing the band's new album - apparently without actually hearing it first.
The review, published in Maxim's March issue, gives the Crowes' "Warpaint" a rating of two-and-a-half stars out of five.
"The writer - who has not heard the album since advance CDs were not made available - wrote what appears to be a disparaging assessment anyway, citing, `it hasn't left Chris Robinson and the gang much room for growth,'" said a statement on the band's official Web site.
"It speaks directly to the lack of the publication's credibility," the band's manager, Pete Angelus said in a statement. "In my opinion, it's a disgrace to the arts, journalism, critics, the publication itself and the public. What's next - Maxim's concert reviews of shows they never attended, book reviews of books never read and film reviews of films never seen?"
Hundreds of Moroccan heavy metal fans met on Saturday for their biggest festival in the north African country since a group of hard rock enthusiasts was jailed five years ago for "Satanism."

The Florida Marlins are looking for some footloose fat men. The National League team is creating an all-male, plus-size cheerleading squad to be dubbed the Manatees. Tryouts were scheduled for Sunday.
The team hopes to recruit seven to 10 tubby men to dance, cheer and jiggle during Friday and Saturday home games this season.
Real manatees, 1,200-pound mammals sometimes referred to as "sea cows," are not considered the most agile of creatures and often get caught in boat propellers.
The Marlins want their Manatees to have the same dimensions, but to be decidedly more agile. Men will be judged on how well they dance a choreographed routine.
A federal court jury on Friday found the owner of a company that sells "male enhancement" tablets and other herbal supplements guilty of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, bank fraud and money laundering.
Steve Warshak, whose conviction was reported Friday by The Cincinnati Enquirer, is founder and president of Berkeley Premium Nutraceuticals, which distributes Enzyte and a number of products alleged to boost energy, manage weight, reduce memory loss and aid restful sleep.
Television ads for Enzyte feature "Smiling Bob," a goofy, grinning man whose life gets much better after he uses the product, which allegedly boosted his sexual performance.
Some former employees, including relatives of Warshak, pleaded guilty to other charges and cooperated with prosecutors. They testified that the company created fictitious doctors to endorse the pills, fabricated a customer-satisfaction survey and made up numbers to back claims about Enzyte's effectiveness.
Johnnie Carr, who joined childhood friend Rosa Parks in the historic Montgomery bus boycott and kept a busy schedule of civil rights activism up to her final days, has died. She was 97.
Carr succeeded the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. as president of the Montgomery Improvement Association in 1967, a post she held at her death. It was the newly formed association that led the boycott of city buses in the Alabama capital in 1955 after Parks, a black seamstress, was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to whites on a crowded bus.
"Johnnie Carr is one of the three major icons of the Civil Rights Movement: Dr. King, Rosa Parks and Johnnie Carr," said Morris Dees, co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center. "I think ultimately, when the final history books are written, she'll be one of the few people remembered for that terrific movement."
As the Improvement Association's president, Carr helped lead several initiatives to improve race relations and conditions for blacks. She was involved in a lawsuit to desegregate Montgomery schools, with her then-13-year-old son, Arlam, the named plaintiff.
Just days before her stroke, Carr participated in King Day ceremonies in Montgomery, speaking after a parade. Admirers marveled at her energy and commitment into her 90s.
Arlam Carr said that his mother's 97th birthday was last month, but that the only place her age showed was on paper.
Robin Moore, a nonfiction author best known for writing "The French Connection" and "The Green Berets," has died after a long illness. He was 82.
"The French Connection," published in 1969, was about a New York drug bust. It inspired a movie that won five Academy Awards in 1971, including best picture.
"The Green Berets," published in 1965, was made into a movie starring John Wayne in 1968. Moore also co-wrote "The Ballad of the Green Berets," which became the signature song of the Special Forces unit.
Moore's other books included "The Happy Hooker," which he helped write and was published in 1972.
In 1986, Moore pleaded guilty to selling fraudulent literary tax shelters. The government charged Moore published books and sold the royalty rights to promoters and investors at inflated prices based upon arbitrary and unrealistic values.
