• Often, geniuses are not satisfied even with works of genius. Frank Capra once visited a film class taught by Professor Jeanine Basinger of Wesleyan College. In the class she showed Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, which of course starred Jimmy Stewart and which Mr. Capra had directed. He strolled the college grounds for most of the film but returned in time to see the end, including the scene in which Mr. Stewart’s character breaks down. Although this scene (and the entire film) is a classic, Mr. Capra became upset. Ms. Basinger asked him what was wrong, and Mr. Capra explained, “I shouldn’t have done it that way. It could have been better.”
• Will Rogers was once asked to be toastmaster at a Jewish charitable club and he surprised everybody, including comedian Eddie Cantor, by speaking Yiddish. According to Mr. Cantor, “It seems the minute he was asked to be toastmaster, he got hold of a young student who in six weeks taught him enough of the language so that he could conduct the program.”
• Phyllis Diller’s first movie starred Bob Hope: Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number! On the set, Mr. Hope noticed Ms. Diller looking around. After asking, he found out that she was looking for the cue cards. “Phyllis, we don’t use cue cards in movies,” Mr. Hope explained. “That’s only in television.” Ms. Diller was surprised: “Oh? Then I’d better learn my lines.”
Fans
• Professional golfer Peter Jacobsen has seen actor Samuel L. Jackson at many celebrity golf tournaments, and he knows that Mr. Jackson often goes across the rope separating the golfers from the crowd of fans so he can mingle with the fans. Of course, many celebrities are leery of doing that — sometimes with good reason — so Mr. Jacobsen asked Mr. Jackson why he did that. Mr. Jackson explained, “Because, Peter, these are the people who allow me to be playing here. They go see my movies, they buy the DVDs, they make me who I am. And I greatly appreciate their support of me and my work.” Mr. Jacobsen observes with admiration, “How impressive is that?”
• While actor Paul Newman was in Kansas City to film Mr. and Mrs. Bridge, he went into an ice cream shop, where he met one of the local citizens, who was flustered to see a big movie star. The woman paid for her ice cream, then left the ice cream shop. A few moments later, she realized that she didn’t have her ice cream in her hand, so she returned to the shop. Mr. Newman asked her, “Are you looking for your ice cream?” Still flustered, the woman could only nod. Mr. Newman then told her, “You put it in your purse with your change.”
• Beautiful actress/model June Wilkinson made a movie in Mexico titled The Rage Within. Her male co-star was in love with her, and his house was filled with her photographs. The night before they were to film a big scene, they went on a date, and he tried to kiss her. However, Ms. Wilkinson declined to be kissed, and the leading man grew angry and told her, “Your pictures are sexier than you are!” The next day, the director asked her, “Are you ready for your big love scene? How was your date?” She replied, “I think we’re in trouble.”
• Andy Robinson played a psycho killer in Dirty Harry. No, he did not play Dirty Harry — he played the other psycho killer. This movie has a famous scene at the end in which Dirty Harry holds a gun that may or may not contain a bullet on Mr. Robinson’s character and asks him, “Do you feel lucky? Well, do you, punk?” In real life Mr. Robinson is a committed pacifist, and unfortunately in real life strangers sometimes recognize him and say to him, “Do you feel lucky? Well, do you, punk?”
Rhode Island, officially the State of Rhode Island, is a state in the New England region of the United States. It is the smallest U.S. state by area and the seventh least populous (1,059,361 as of 2019), but it is also the second most densely populated behind New Jersey. The state takes its name from Rhode Island; however, most of the state is located on the mainland. The state has land borders with Connecticut to the west, Massachusetts to the north and east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south via Rhode Island Sound and Block Island Sound. It also shares a small maritime border with New York. Providence is the state capital and most populous city in Rhode Island.
Rhode Island has been the first in a number of initiatives. The Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations enacted the first law prohibiting slavery in America on May 18, 1652.

Rhode Island. The law was not enforced and by the time of the American Revolution Rhode Island’s slaves made up about 6% of its population. Rhode Island only effectively prohibited slavery in 1843. Tiny Rhode Island was surrounded by free states and it may have been impossible to keep the slaves from successfully running off to escape bondage.
My wrong guess was Pennsylvania because of the Quaker influence in the settlement of that colony.

Just a guess...Massachusetts?

OTOH, people in Texas are letting fires burn homes because they don’t have enough water to supply people *and* fight fires. In this day and age, how can that be?

Today marked the opening ceremonies for BlizzCon, the annual event in which fans of Blizzard Entertainment—they of Diablo, Starcraft, World Of Warcraft, Hearthstone, and more—get together to celebrate the company’s games, and get glimpses of the all the upcoming new stuff. And despite being entirely online this year—or “BlizzConline,” as it’s been clumsily portmanteau’d—the event still had some major reveals today, including news that fan favorite Diablo II is being remastered and re-released later this year. What BlizzCon 2021 was not, though, was hilarious—at least, not until Metallica took “the stage.”
In any other year, one of the world’s biggest dad rock bands hanging out with the collective orcs of the Blizzard fanbase would just be another hype-creating moment for BlizzCon attendees. This year, though, the opening ceremonies were being broadcast online, both through the official BlizzCon page, YouTube, and Twitch. And you know what happens when licensed music gets played on the internet, don’t you, folks? That’s right: Copyright issues!
Per Uproxx, the audio of James, Lars, and the boys’ performance apparently went out as per usual on YouTube and the BlizzCon page—although the whole thing appears to have been excised from the YouTube upload of the event. But on Twitch…On Twitch, things did not go so well. Which is to say that, even though it was being hosted on the company’s official twitchgaming channel, the performance was ominously preceded by a chyron noting that “The upcoming musical performance is subject to copyright protection by the applicable copyright holder.” And then this happened.
And, look: Can we prove that someone at Twitch intentionally picked the dorkiest, most Zelda forest-ass music imaginable to have Metallica rock their little hearts out to, instead of broadcasting their extremely copyrighted music (and thus having to deal with the possibility of issuing one of their ubiquitous DMCA takedown notices to themselves)? Obviously not, just as we can’t show definitive evidence that Twitch then switched over to, like, “lo-fi beats to publicly thrash to” to finish out the set. It’s totally possible that that was just, you know, the copyright-free audio that Twitch had on hand, which they then simply chose to dub over one of the most popular rock bands of all time. On the other hand, we can prove that it is extremely funny to watch this happen, especially—as many people have pointed out—since Metallica is at least partially responsible for the restrictive character of many online musical streaming laws that dominate the internet today, after their high-profile campaign against Napster way back at the dawn of the MP3.
It’s not surprising that a man called Saint Bernard once said, “Love me, love my dog” in a sermon. After all, dogs have long been the world’s most popular pet.
But now, the meanies at conservative media giant Newsmax have refused to throw man’s best friend a bone, attacking President Joe Biden’s dog, Champ, in a Friday segment. Host Greg Kelly felt the need to lift his leg and woof on the dog’s appearance, saying that Champ “looks a little rough,” and “needs a bath, a comb, and some loving care,” adding that he looks like he’s “from the junkyard.”
Kelly, who claimed he loves dogs and admitted he was having some fun, brought on some “experts” who compared Champ to past White House dogs. They claimed he looked bad compared to Ronald Reagan’s Victory, or George H.W.’s spaniel, Millie.
The good news: The vast majority of The Muppet Show is now available to stream for the first time ever. The (slightly) bad news: Not all of The Muppet Show is now available to stream.
While more than 100 of the beloved series' 120 episodes are now streaming in full on Disney+, eagle-eyed viewers may have noticed some edits and omissions when the show debuted on the streaming service Friday. Most notably, two episodes from season 5 — featuring guest stars Brooke Shields and Chris Langham — are entirely absent from Disney+. (The first season's episode featuring Kaye Ballard was also missing when the series debuted on Friday, but has been restored; a Disney+ representative said its omission was simply a mistake.)
Meanwhile, major edits have been made to season 2's entry with Don Knotts, omitting the centerpiece musical number "Lullaby of Birdland" and all references to it, and assorted other songs and sketches are missing from certain episodes. (A devoted Reddit user assembled a seemingly complete list of edits here.)
A representative for Disney+ confirmed to EW that most of the missing pieces can be attributed to issues securing music rights. This comes as no surprise; difficulties with licensing the many songs performed on The Muppet Show kept much of the series from releasing on home video for years. Indeed, the season 1 DVD released by Disney in 2005 omitted several songs; all of those segments have been restored on Disney+.
The Chris Langham episode, however, is a thornier issue. Langham was a staff writer on The Muppet Show who stepped in as a guest star when Richard Pryor dropped out at the last minute. Langham is also a convicted sex offender; in 2007, he was found guilty of possessing child pornography and spent six months in prison. It's possible this has something to do with his episode's absence; however, Disney declined to comment on the matter.
A group of wrestlers who were an active part of the sport in the 1980s and ‘90s moved the US Supreme Court on Wednesday claiming that the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) failed to protect them from repeated head injuries.
The suit was filed in an appeal against the lower court ruling that had dismissed the lawsuits in September last year, saying that they were frivolous or filed after the statute of limitations had expired.
About 50 former professional wrestlers including Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka, Joseph “Road Warrior Animal” Laurinaitis, Paul “Mr Wonderful” Orndorff, Chris “King Kong Bundy” Pallies and Harry Masayoshi Fujiwara moved court alleging that WWE knew about the risks of head injuries but did not do enough to shield them, the Associated Press reported.
Other wrestlers include Chavo Guerrero Jr, Bryan Clark, Ahmed Johnson, Dave Hebner, Earl Hebner, Ken Patera, Shane Douglas and Marty Jannetty, according to Bleacher Report.
In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs argued that unlike football and hockey, in which players have suffered similar injuries, WWE matches involve moves scripted and choreographed by the WWE, thus making the company directly responsible for the injuries caused to the wrestlers.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez volunteered at a Houston food bank after raising more than $3 million for Texas storm relief.
The New York congresswoman flew to the Lone Star state after a stunning fundraising effort following the devastating winter storm.
“That’s the New York spirit, that’s the Texas spirit that’s the American spirit,” she said.
Ms Ocasio-Cortez packed lunches in Houston with Representatives Sylvia Garcia and Sheila Jackson Lee on Saturday after her fundraising effort topped $3.2 million.
“Charity isn’t a replacement for good governance, but we won’t turn away from helping people in need when things hit the fan,” said Ms Ocasio-Cortez said on Twitter as she took donations for the state.
Erik Prince (R-Domionist), the former head of the security mercenary contractor Blackwater Worldwide and a prominent supporter of former President Donald Trump (R-Lock Him Up), violated a United Nations arms embargo on Libya by sending weapons to a militia commander who was attempting to overthrow the internationally backed government, according to U.N. investigators.
A confidential U.N. report obtained by The New York Times and delivered by investigators to the Security Council on Thursday reveals how Prince deployed a force of foreign mercenaries, armed with attack aircraft, gunboats and cyberwarfare capabilities, to eastern Libya at the height of a major battle in 2019.
As part of the operation, which the report said cost $80 million, the mercenaries also planned to form a hit squad that could track down and kill selected Libyan commanders.
Prince, a former Navy SEAL and the brother of Betsy DeVos (R-Eye Of A Needle), Trump’s education secretary, became a symbol of the excesses of privatized American military force when his Blackwater contractors killed 17 Iraqi civilians in 2007.
During the Trump administration, Prince was a generous donor and a staunch ally of the president, often in league with figures like Steve Bannon and Roger Stone as they sought to undermine Trump’s critics. And Prince came under scrutiny from the Trump-Russia inquiry over his meeting with a Russian banker in 2017.
An oil rig explosion off the coast of Louisiana killed eleven workers on 20 April 2010. The world then watched helplessly as BP's oil gushed out into the Gulf of Mexico for 87 days, killing untold millions of marine animals.
Dolphins that survived one of the worst environmental disasters ever, still appear to be suffering the effects over a decade later.
Comparing populations of common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) of Barataria Bay in Louisiana that live within the area of oil exposure to populations from Sarasota Bay in Florida, which haven't been exposed to serious pollution, researchers have found there are still troubling health differences between them.
Previous studies have already revealed the shorter-term impacts of the oil spill on the Barataria Bay dolphins, including abnormal adrenal function, lung disease, impaired reproduction, immune system problems and decreased survival. Dolphins living within the spill area only gave birth to living calves 19 percent of the time.
Analysing tissue samples from 34 Barataria Bay dolphins, University of Connecticut veterinary scientist Sylvain De Guise and colleagues found immune system impairments in 2018 similar to those found in the population in 2011. They then performed laboratory tests on dolphin cells and mice to confirm if oil exposure can trigger these conditions.
Both the mice exposed to oil and the dolphins had increased T lymphocyte (white blood cell) proliferation and more cells that suppress the immune system – T regulatory cells. These cells usually prevent autoimmune diseases.
Before the coronavirus pandemic, tourist-dependent Nevada had a notorious attraction: It was the only place in America where someone could legally pay for sex.
These days, even in the state known for sin, the business is taboo.
Legal brothels have been shuttered for nearly a year, leaving sex workers to offer less-lucrative alternatives like online dates or nonsexual escort services. Those in the industry say many of the licensed prostitutes, who work as independent contractors, have struggled to qualify for unemployment benefits since closures began last March and some have opted to take their work into the shadows, offering sex illegally.
While the business of legal bordellos may seem incompatible with social distancing, sex workers and brothel owners say that’s not the case. Like other close-contact industries such as massage therapy and dental services, they contend brothels should be allowed to reopen with protective measures.
“We could easily do work at arm’s length, just the same as they do within the massage parlors, which are open in the state of Nevada,” sex worker Alice Little said. “You can go to a dentist and have him put his hands in your mouth. You can go to a tattoo parlor and get your face tattooed right now. You can get piercings put in your face. You’re certainly not masked for any of those things.”
Customs authorities in Ohio say they intercepted a shipment of cereal earlier this month with a special frosting — cocaine.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Cincinnati reported finding 44 pounds (20 kilograms) of cocaine-coated cornflakes that had been shipped from South America to a Hong Kong home.
Officials said a narcotics detection dog named Bico was checking out incoming freight from Peru on Feb. 13 when he alerted officers to the package. Officers found that the cereal contained white powder and the flakes were coated with a grayish substance. Both tested positive for cocaine.
