As I've mentioned before, I'm a reporter on a midsize daily in Massachusetts, in a town of 88,000 that's seen better days. The unemployment rate here is 14 percent.
Scott Burns: Introducing the 94 Percent (Asset Builder)
Last year, the wage base maximum was $113,700. This year it is $117,000. The figure rises every year. The Social Security Trustees Report regularly tells us that 94 percent of all workers earn less than the wage base maximum.

Laurel and Audrey are identical twins, but they couldn't be less alike. Laurel is mousy and muddled; in her early 20s, she's still living at home with her widowed father, going nowhere. Audrey - the pretty one - has moved out into the world; she has a cool job, a boyfriend - everything Laurel wishes she could have but suspects she never will. Out driving around during a brief reunion, the girls collide with a truck. Audrey is killed, and Laurel comes to not knowing at first who she is.
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt (October 11, 1884 - November 7, 1962) was the longest-serving First Lady of the United States, holding the post from 1933 to 1945 during her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt's four terms in office. President Harry S. Truman later called her the "First Lady of the World" in tribute to her human rights achievements.
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was born at 56 West 37th Street in New York City, to Elliott Bulloch Roosevelt (1860-1894) and Anna Rebecca Hall (1863-1892). From an early age, she preferred to be called by her middle name (Eleanor). Through her father, she was a niece of President Theodore "T.R." Roosevelt, Jr. (1858-1919). Through her mother, she was a niece of tennis players Valentine Gill "Vallie" Hall III (1867-1934) and Edward Ludlow Hall (1872-1932). She acted in such an old-fashioned manner as a child that her mother nicknamed her "Granny".

Her birth surname was Roosevelt, meaning that she didn't need to change
her monogrammed items when she wed, and she didn't have the option of
pulling a Lucy Stoner and explicitly keeping her birth surname.

Anna Eleanor Roosevelt (no incest implied, she was a distant cousin).

Anna Eleanor Roosevelt's maiden name was Roosevelt. That's right, she was a 'removed' cousin to Franklin...
My mother's birthday was on October 11, the same as Eleanor. This presented a problem since she was a Republican. Mother came around by the time I arrived, and with my father being a Democrat, I quickly jumped on board and became a fan.
PS: More snow today, and more shoveling for me. Who needs to belong to a gym? Now if I just had some fast, loud music for the shoveling...
DJ Useo replied:
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was honestly her maiden name. Distant cousins, I believe.
I hear she was well-respected, and justifiably so.
Sadly, after the run of 'people' in the White House during my lifetime, I maintain a deep skepticism regarding our 'leaders' dedication to our countries' welfare. I will admit, I wasn't there to judge for myself.
Dale of Diamond Springs, Nordricali, responded:
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was a fifth cousin to her husband Franklin Delano Roosevelt. She was born with the "swells" (rich old money) and that doesn't surprise me being that the upper crust constantly bred amongst themselves to dilute the gene pool!

And, Joe S answered:
It says here that Eleanor Roosevelt's maiden name was Roosevelt.
Everybody knows that.
Well maybe not everybody, but I knew that. I remember from high school, which is strange because I hardly remember high school it was so long ago. I remember from Dean Barnett's history class, he always managed to peak our interest with little tidbits like that. Mr. Barnett was my favorite teacher and I loved history classes. I learned so much from him, although I don't think I learned about Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter in one of his classes.
I Remember my girl friends from high school too. To this day I remember what each one looked like although some of their names escape me now.

Well, it's Eleanor Roosevelt, of course, according to a Siena/C-SPAN poll of 242 historians and political scientists that rated her well above her so-called competitors.
That's the same answer that the poll's respondents have given each of the five times that the poll has been taken over the last 32 years.
Indeed, on the whole, three decades of respondents - in 2014, 2008, 2003, 1993, and 1982 - have been consistent in their picks for first lady superlatives. In the latest results, Abigail Adams came in second for the fourth time, and Jacqueline Kennedy and Dolly Madison, also long-time high-placers, came in third and fourth.
Michelle Obama, new to the list, came in fifth, and Hillary Clinton, a consistent top-biller since 1993, was in sixth place. Lady Bird Johnson, Betty Ford, and Martha Washington, and Rosalynn Carter rounded out the Top 10.
Oscar nominated Canadian actress Ellen Page has come out as gay, declaring that hiding her sexuality has caused her years of suffering.
Page went public Friday night in Las Vegas during an emotional speech to the Time to Thrive conference - an LGBT (lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual) youth event sponsored by the gay advocacy group Human Rights Campaign.
The 26 year old Halifax native said she was "tired of lying by omission," and that her fear of coming out had caused her spirit, her mental health and her relationships all to suffer.
The audience stood and applauded when she told the conference "I'm here today because I'm gay, and maybe I can make a difference to help others have an easier and more hopeful time."
John Lithgow toplines "King Lear" and Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater star in "Much Ado About Nothing" in New York this summer, with both titles lined up for the 2014 season of the Public Theater's annual Shakespeare in the Park.
The longrunning free theater program that launched at Central Park's Delacorte Theater in 1962 has grown into one of the city's cultural landmarks, attracting big-name thesps in recent years including Amy Adams, Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. Park productions have also yielded Broadway transfers including the Tony-winning revival of "Hair" and the Al Pacino-toplined revival of "The Merchant of Venice."
Rabe ("American Horror Story"), who co-starred in "Merchant," teams with Linklater ("The Crazy Ones") for the revival of comedy "Much Ado." Linklater returns to the park after starring with Jesse Tyler Ferguson in last summer's "Comedy of Errors," while helmer Jack O'Brien ("Hairspray," "Macbeth" with Ethan Hawke) makes his Shakespeare in the Park debut with in the title.

A spokeswoman for Simon Cowell says he and socialite Lauren Silverman welcomed their baby son early Friday evening, Valentine's Day, in New York.
The spokeswoman, AnnMarie Thomson, says the infant weighed 6 pounds, 7 ounces, and is named Eric, after Cowell's father.
Cowell, of "American Idol" and "The X Factor" fame, posted a series of tweets about the happy event. He says the new mom is in "great shape" and describes his new son as "healthy and handsome."
A mob armed with wooden clubs and iron bars, screaming that they were going to "cleanse" their neighbourhood of gay people, dragged 14 young men from their beds and assaulted them, human rights activists said Saturday.
Four of the victims were marched to a police station, where they allegedly were kicked and punched by police officers who yelled pejoratives at them, said Ifeanyi Orazulike of the International Center on Advocacy for the Right to Health.
Police threatened that the men would be incarcerated for 14 years, he said, the maximum prison sentence under Nigeria's new Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, dubbed the "Jail the Gays" law. Activists have warned the law could trigger attacks such as the one perpetrated in the early hours of Thursday morning in Abuja, the capital of Africa's most populous nation.
Mob justice is common in Nigeria and civil rights organizations have been warning for years of an increase in community violence and the government's failure to curb acts in which people have been beaten to death for perceived crimes such as theft.

Church groups are seeking to take over entire theaters for opening night screenings of Son of God, the upcoming movie about the life of Jesus Christ.
Various religious organizations throughout the country have been buying out screens and distributing tickets to groups of thousands of people for "Theater Take-Overs" on Thursday, Feb. 27, the night before the film's officially released, according to production company Lightworkers Media.
Mega-church pastor Rick Warren is buying out screens in eight different theaters throughout Orange County.
Other churches and organizations, ranging in size from 10,000 to 4 million, are distributing tickets for a "Theater Take-Over." Some pastors will also buy out screens showing the film in Spanish and Korean. There's even a Catholic "Theater Take-Over" planned for Miami.

Robert King sat, slept and ate every meal alone in a cramped cell at Louisiana's notorious Angola prison for 29 long and lonely years.
His eyesight failed from lack of stimulation, but King insists his resolve to fight the injustice of solitary confinement never did.
Many of the more than 80,000 prisoners currently held in solitary confinement in US prisons -- and countless more around the world -- are not as fortunate.
The human mind is not built for the sensory and social isolation of solitary confinement, researchers said on Friday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Chicago.
The reason it is still so widely used is because it is seen as the easiest way to protect guards from violent prisoners.

New CBS comedy "Bad Teacher" is headed for a Thursday timeslot while returning drama "Unforgettable" will make its home on Friday, according to some spring sked moves announced by the Eye on Friday.
Also, Thursday 9 o'clock-hour comedies "The Crazy Ones" and "Two and a Half Men" will switch time periods starting at the end of this month.
"Bad Teacher," a single-camera comedy based on the hit feature film, will premiere Thursday, April 24 in the 9:30 slot, taking over for Robin Williams comedy "Crazy Ones," which will have wrapped its 22-episode, first-season order the previous week.
The timeslot flip for the comedies will put "Two and a Half Men" immediately behind another multi-cam comedy, rookie "The Millers." CBS may be wanting to see how much gas "Men" has left in the tank before deciding whether to bring it back for a 12th season. Both its fate, and that of "The Crazy Ones" won't be known until May.

It just might be one of the longest freelance gigs in magazine publishing history. Cartoonist Al Jaffee has contributed to MAD Magazine, the satirical mainstay, since its beginnings, and is marking the 50th anniversary of not only creating but illustrating its most iconic feature.
"Like all so-called independent contractors, you get up in the morning and you say to yourself 'How am I gonna pay the mortgage this month? I better come up with an idea,'" said Jaffee, 92.
That idea was born when Jaffee saw fold-outs in magazines such as National Geographic and Life and, in typical MAD fashion, decided to do the opposite, creating the fold-in. A single image appears on the inside back cover along with a question. The reader folds the page in to reveal another image and the answer to the question. Thinking it was a "one-shot" gag, Jaffee was surprised when his editor demanded a fold-in for the next issue and it quickly became a regular feature.
It takes quite a lot of mental and artistic gymnastics for each fold-in. Jaffee still creates each by hand - "I enjoy dipping a brush into paint and putting it onto an illustration board" -- without any computer assistance. Jaffee said that MAD's editorial staff will offer him subject matter in order to stay current - a Kardashian, for example - and he will start thinking of the question. He begins with a small sketch of stick figures or objects. He then creates another sketch dividing the complete image and figures out how to integrate a complete drawing in the center where the side panels become irrelevant.
John Henson, the son of the late Muppets creator Jim Henson, has died in New York. He was 48.
Cheryl Henson says her brother died of a "massive heart attack" at his home in Saugerties on Friday. She says it happened after he had been building an igloo in the snow with his daughter.
Henson followed in his famous father's footsteps as a puppeteer, performing as Sweetums the ogre in several films, including "Muppet Treasure Island" and "It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie." He was also a shareholder and board member of the Jim Henson Company.
Henson leaves behind his wife Gyongyi and two daughters, ages 10 and 15. A private funeral service is planned.
