Jonah Lehrer: Cracking the Scratch Lottery Code (Wired)
Mohan Srivastava, a geological statistician living in Toronto, was working in his office in June 2003, waiting for some files to download onto his computer, when he discovered a couple of old lottery tickets buried under some paper on his desk. The tickets were cheap scratchers-a gag gift from his squash partner-and Srivastava found himself wondering if any of them were winners. He fished a coin out of a drawer and began scratching off the latex coating. "The first was a loser, and I felt pretty smug," Srivastava says. "I thought, 'This is exactly why I never play these dumb games.'"

Lenore Skenazy: No Child Left Outside (Creators Syndicate)
For almost a half-century, kids at the farm-based Moorestown Children's School in New Jersey have spent a lot of their time stomping in the mud, running through the meadow and visiting the barn, blissfully oblivious to the danger in their midst. Trees. Oh, the child care inspectors don't use that term. They call it "overgrown vegetation" - the tree branches that dip down to the ground, weeping willow-style.

Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch bought the Wall Street Journal last year, and in short order he has turned it into a tongue-clucking sympathizer with and proselytizer for the biggest of big businesses - not only on its editorial pages, but also in its news stories.

Mark Shields: Washington's Leading Jerk (Creators Syndicate)
After several hours, as the story goes, Hamill asked Newfield to write the names of the three worst men of the 20th century on one piece of paper and said he would do the same on a separate piece. The names on each man's list turned out to be identical: Hitler, Stalin and Walter O'Malley, the owner who moved their beloved Dodgers out of Brooklyn to Los Angeles.

The Idle Pleasures of Jerome K. Jerome: Essay by Michael Dirda
People don't often think of the Victorian era as a heyday of comic writing. Instead we commonly picture bearded patriarchs and their stiffly unsmiling helpmeets, remember the morally serious novels of George Eliot and the uplifting essays of Matthew Arnold, and hear, ringing in our mind's ear, Queen Victoria's dour comment: "We are not amused."

Mark Edmundson: Narcissus Regards a Book (The Chronicle Review)
Who is the common reader now? I do not think there is any way to evade a simple answer to this question. Common readers-which is to say the great majority of people who continue to read-read for one purpose and one purpose only. They read for pleasure. They read to be entertained. They read to be diverted, assuaged, comforted, and tickled. The evidence for this phenomenon is not far to seek.

Trivia Question from Yesterday

What football team has won the most Super Bowls?

   Pittsburgh Steelers                                                      Source

The Pittsburgh Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII in January of 2009. That win gave the francise a NFL leading 6 Super Bowl victories. The next closest rivals are the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers with 5 wins each.        Source

mj was first, and correct, with:
   Both wins and appearances
The Pittsburgh Steelers (6-1 in SB).
  Go Black and Gold!

RICHARD mc D responded:
   Pittsburgh with six?

Jim from CA, retired to ID, replied:
   Pittsburgh Steelers

That would be the malevolent, evil and down-right dastardly Pittsburg(h) Steelers. They who have inflicted upon the world the likes of this:

Jeesh!

Alan J answered:
   Pittsburgh Steelers

Charlie responded:
The Pittsburgh Steelers have six (1975, 1976, 1979, 1980, 2006, 2009). I don't presume to know if they'll get their seventh shortly, but I wouldn't bet against it. Might be a very good game.
Dallas and San Francisco each have five.

George M replied:
The Pittsburgh Steelers have won the most Super Bowls - six, starting with Super Bowl IX in January 1975. For my money, the Steelers of the seventies are the greatest dynasty in all of pro football history.

Kevin in NJ answered:
That would be the Pittsburgh Steelers with 6 wins.

     SB9 : 16-6 Pittsburgh over Minnesota
     SB10: 21-17 Pittsburgh over Dallas
     SB13: 35-31 Pittsburgh over Dallas
SB14: 31-19 Pittsburgh over LA Rams
     SB40: 21-10 Pittsburgh over Seattle
     SB43: 27-23 Pittsburgh over Arizona
The Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco Forty-Niners are tied for second place, with 5 wins each.
The Green Bay Packers have won twelve league championships (more than any other team in the NFL) including nine NFL Championships prior to the Super Bowl era and three Super Bowl victories in 1967 (Super Bowl I), 1968 (Super Bowl II) and 1996 (Super Bowl XXXI). The team has historic rivalries with the Chicago Bears, whom they have played in over 180 games, and the Detroit Lions, whom they have played since the 1930s. The Packers also share a fierce blood rivalry with the Minnesota Vikings, who also reside in the NFC North along with the Packers, Bears and Lions in what is known as the "Black and Blue Division" due to the intensity of the rivalry between the four teams.

Concert Canceled At Last Minute

Prince

Prince's Super Bowl-weekend concert was a Super Bust.

The superstar was supposed to perform Friday night at TheEvent, a concert with Erykah Badu that was to be a fundraiser for The Goss-Michael Foundation, the art group founded by George Michael and his longtime partner, Kenny Goss.

But the performance never happened, and the circumstances surrounding the cancellation were as mysterious as the Purple One himself.

Things started falling apart early Friday, when a statement of disappointment was sent by the foundation saying the concert was canceled.

Then the statement was rescinded by the foundation shortly after that, with another saying the concert was back on: "Prince has arrived in Dallas and will perform this evening."

But the concert, recently moved from a tent in downtown Dallas to a hotel just north of the city, never materialized Friday night, and a source close to Prince, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the source was not authorized to speak publicly, told The Associated Press on Saturday that he never came to Dallas.

How Google Removed The Muzzle On Twitter

Egypt

Even before his first day on the job at Google, Ujjwal Singh was trying to figure out how to use his passion for the spoken word and the company's technological prowess to help Egyptians bypass government efforts to muzzle the massive protests there.

Singh, 38, helped start an online service that lets fans share voice messages with the likes of Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. Google bought the startup Jan. 25, and a Google product team leader trying to figure out a way around Egypt's recent Internet blackout asked Singh for help before he reported to work.

A weekend of brainstorming and programming later, Speak2Tweet was born - a service that lets people call a phone number and leave a message, then posts a link to the message to Twitter.

It allowed Egyptians to communicate even as the regime of President Hosni Mubarak cut Internet and cell phone services for days, trying to squelch furious protests in the streets of Cairo demanding an end to his three decades of authoritarian rule.

Attorney Denies Theft

Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan's attorney said Saturday that her client did not steal a $2,500 necklace and would fight any charges if they are filed.

The statement from attorney Shawn Chapman Holley was the first official word from the actress' camp since police revealed they were investigating the troubled starlet for grand theft.

"We vehemently deny these allegations and, if charges are filed, we will fight them in court, not in the press," Holley said.

Kamofie & Co., a Venice custom jewelry store, reported the necklace stolen on Jan. 22, roughly three weeks after the actress was released from three months of court-ordered rehab at the Betty Ford Center.

Lawyers Seek To Stop Lifetime Film

Amanda Knox

Lawyers for U.S. student Amanda Knox and her ex-boyfriend, who were found guilty of killing Knox's British roommate in Italy, have formally demanded that U.S. television channel Lifetime scrap a planned film about their trial.

Attornies Carlo Dalla Vedova and Luca Maori said Saturday they had sent letters to Lifetime warning they would go to U.S. court to try to sequester the film if it isn't canceled and a trailer removed from Lifetime's website.

"Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy," which features "Heroes" star Hayden Panettiere in the title role, is due to air Feb. 21.

Les Eisner, a spokesman for Lifetime's parent company, A&E Television Networks, said the network was not commenting at this time.

Jamie Oliver won't be cooking another course of his reality TV show in Los Angeles schools.

The filming permit for the celebrity chef's ABC series "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution" was terminated this week, said Los Angeles Unified School District spokesman Robert Alaniz. He said Oliver had been filming for two weeks at one school but the decision was made to ban him from others because he failed to submit a proposal about his plans to officials.

A spokeswoman for the network said production on "Food Revolution" would continue.

The first season of the show featured Oliver attempting to revolutionize the eating habits and food policies of Huntington, W. Va.

Documentary Stolen From Festival

"Khordorkovsky"

The finished version of the German documentary "Khordorkovsky," which traces the controversial trial and imprisonment of oligarch turned Kremlin critic Mikhail B. Khodorkovsky, has been stolen from the Berlin production offices of director Cyril Tuschi.

Two computer hard drives and two laptops containing the final version of the film were stolen from Tuschi's offices Thursday night, the director said. Berlin police are investigating the crime.

"Khordorkovsky" was set to have its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 14. An earlier version of the film was delivered to the Berlin Festival two days ago and will be screened if the stolen material cannot be recovered.

This is the second time material relating to the documentary has been stolen. A few weeks ago, a laptop containing an earlier version of the film was stolen from a hotel room in Bali, where Tuschi had gone on vacation to finish his movie.

'Escaped To Latin America'

Martin Bormann

Top Nazi Martin Bormann, who German authorities say died in 1945, escaped Berlin and lived in Latin America disguised as a priest, a former Belgian collaborator said in an interview published Saturday.

Paul van Aerschodt, 88, who was sentenced to death in Belgium in 1946 but broke out of prison before his execution and now lives in Spain, told the Derniere Heure newspaper he had met Bormann four times in La Paz, Bolivia, around 1960.

"Bormann had come from Paraguay and was plotting with some 20 officers a coup to overthrow (dictator Juan) Peron in Argentina," van Aerschodt said.

He claimed Bormann, who called himself Augustin von Lembach, passed himself off as a priest and celebrated masses, weddings and funerals and administered the last rites to the dying.

He said Bormann had found refuge in Bolivia in 1947 after another priest helped him to obtain a visa.

Record Toy Revenue

"Star Wars"

Lucasfilm's "Star Wars" franchise had its highest toy revenue ever for a non-movie year in 2010 and the best toy revenue since "Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith."

With sales of more than $510 million last year, "Star Wars" also maintained its position as the bestselling boys toy license in the U.S. for the third consecutive year, according to Lucasfilm and research firm NPD Group.

The popularity of animated TV series "Clone Wars" on U.S. cable network Cartoon Network has helped keep the saga in media play, and toy lines from Hasbro and Lego have helped keep long-time and new fans spending.

This year, the sci-fi evergreen will see the release of "Star Wars: The Complete Saga" on high-definition Blu-ray, a relaunched Star Tours ride at Walt Disney theme parks, a new Hasbro take on the lightsaber and video games, such as "Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars" and "Star Wars: The Old Republic."

Fetches Record Price

French Wine

An amateur wine group paid a record 57,000 euros ($77,000) Saturday for a 237-year-old bottle of wine from France's eastern Jura region at a local wine festival auction.

"Finally, yellow wine has hit the big leagues," said wine festival founder Bernard Badoz of Jura's trademark beverage.

"To sell a bottle for 57,000 euros is not crazy," he said of the 1773 bottle that came from a Louis XV-era vine and grapes harvested during the reign of Louis XVI.

A type of sherry-like white wine, Jura's yellow wine gets its colour from its maturation in a barrel under a layer of yeast.

In Memory

Jesse Valadez

She was a cover girl, had a bit part in a popular 1970s TV show and was an icon of car culture. "Gypsy Rose," an award-winning Chevy Impala admired for its elaborate floral paint job, was known in the world of cruising lowriders as one of the most tricked-out muscle cars of a generation.

On Saturday, the pink, rose-covered car rode atop a flatbed truck, leading a funeral procession of lowriders through East L.A., behind the hearse that carried its owner to his final resting place.

Car clubs from across Southern California and as far away as Las Vegas rolled out to pay their respects to Jesse Valadez, a founding member of the Imperial Car Club. Valadez died of colon cancer Jan. 29 at age 64.

"He loved that car. It was known as the legend of the lowriders," said his brother Armando, 63, who co-founded the Imperial Car Club with Jesse in 1964. "It was his pride and joy. It was his baby."

Mourners, many wearing shirts touting their car clubs, gathered Saturday morning for a service at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, before joining the procession to Rose Hills Memorial Park, ten miles east in Whittier.

The first "Gypsy Rose," a 1963 Impala, was featured in the NBC sitcom "Chico and the Man," which brought customized cars into the national spotlight.

"`Chico and the Man' was the beginning of everything. That car opened the door for everything you see now," said Joe Ray, editor of Lowrider magazine. "I don't know how lowriding would be today without him, his car and that club. He was a pioneer. The name of his car and his car club and East Los Angeles are all synonymous to me."

Valadez's friends in the club bought a casket painted with roses for him to be buried in. At the cemetery, mourners lined up to place freshly cut roses on top of the casket.

According to East L.A. legend, "Gypsy Rose" inspired so much envy that one night in the early `70s a rival car club, or maybe a gang, attacked it with bricks, doing so much damage that it could never be a show car again.

"Car clubs were considered gangs on wheels back then," Ray said. "But it was just fists and maybe knives, no guns. There were rivalries, but they wouldn't touch your car."

Valadez started over with a 1964 Impala, decorating it with more elaborate roses this time, upholstering the interior in hot pink, and installing a cocktail bar in the backseat and a chandelier where the rear dome light used to be. The paint job took two and half years, his brother said.

The car's intricate flower patterns, designed by Walt Prey of Walt Studios in Van Nuys, were "heralded as one of the best paint jobs ever," said Ray. "It set the tone for a lot of the custom jobs back then."

Later as lowriders became more established and law enforcement cracked down on cruising, Valadez became a mentor and role model for a new generation of car fanciers and helped other car clubs, Armando Valadez said.

Meanwhile, the "Gypsy Rose" was featured in advertisements for car shows and soon was touring the country.

The car traveled the country with lowrider tours and was featured at the Peterson Auto Museum's "La Vida Lowrider" exhibit in 2008.

Valadez is survived by two daughters and a son, Jesse Jr., who is also an Imperial member and will inherit "Gypsy Rose."

A baby golden lion tamarin rests on an adult tamarin at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, in Cleveland. Two baby tamarins were born on Dec. 27, 2010 at the zoo. Golden lion tamarins are orange-colored monkeys. The large amount of hair around the face resembles a lion's mane and accounts for this subspecies' name.
