Susie Steiner: Top five regrets of the dying (Guardian)
A nurse has recorded the most common regrets of the dying, and among the top ones is 'I wish I hadn't worked so hard'. What would your biggest regret be if this was your last day of life?
Roger Ebert: Happy Days are Here Again
For me the best news produced by the Florida primary was Newt Gingrich's vow to take his fight all the way to the floor of this year's Republican convention. It has been way too long since a national political convention was more than a coronation stage-managed by public relations experts.

If elections were only about picking winners, there would never be more than two people on a ballot - and sometimes, in "safe" districts, not even that. Independents would be limited to Vermont. Third parties would be told to take their message somewhere else.
Mark Shields: "He Could Have Been a Contender …" (Creators Syndicate)
At the 1972 Democratic convention that nominated Sen. George McGovern of South Dakota for president, McGovern's choice of a running mate was postponed until the convention's last day. At the urging of his campaign manager, Gary Hart, McGovern called the charismatic mayor of Boston, Kevin White, to ask him whether he would accept an invitation, if it were offered, to join the ticket. White said he would, and McGovern promised to get back to him shortly.

The Rolls of Oléron (Rôles d'Oléron, also known as the "Judgments of Oleron" and the "Rules of Oléron") were the first formal statement of "maritime" or "admiralty" laws in northwestern Europe.
They were promulgated by Eleanor of Aquitaine in about 1160, after her return from crusade having accompanied her first husband Louis VII. They were based upon the ancient Lex Rhodia, which had governed Mediterranean commerce since before the time of Christ.
They were published subsequently in French and English. The English king Henry VIII published them as "The judgment of the sea, of Masters, of Mariners, and Merchants, and all their doings." The Rolls greatly influenced the English Black Book of the Admiralty.

Admiralty (Maritime) law... which to one that is unfamiliar with it might think is a simple, uncomplicated matter. It is not! The legal codes covering everything to do with maritime commerce and those that engage in it go back to the Roman Empire and are very exacting, comprehensive and even arcane. Some prominent Americans who were Admiralty Lawyers were Alexander Hamilton, John Adams and Oliver Wendell Holmes. J.C. Penney Co Inc said on Friday said it fully backs its partnership with chat show host Ellen DeGeneres after a conservative group urged the retailer to reconsider hiring DeGeneres as a spokeswoman because she is a lesbian.
A spokeswoman for the retailer declined further comment on the issue but did say in an e-mail to Reuters, "jcpenney stands behind its partnership with Ellen DeGeneres" and added that its announcement of the agreement last week sums up the company's view of the popular TV personality.
Penney's decision to hire DeGeneres spurred conservative group One Million Moms, a division of the American Family Association, to slam the company for not being "neutral in the culture war."
Gay and lesbian rights group GLAAD launched their own counter-campaign, Stand Up For Ellen, in response to One Million Moms, attracting more than 25,000 signatures in their petition to J.C. Penney to keep DeGeneres as their spokesperson, and applauded the retail store for sticking to their decision.

Actor Jason Segel has been honored as Man of the Year by Harvard University's Hasty Pudding Theatricals.
He got the traditional pudding pot Friday evening after a roast by the nation's oldest undergraduate drama troupe.
Segel plays Marshall Eriksen on the CBS comedy "How I Met Your Mother." He co-wrote and starred in last year's "The Muppets." And Friday he sang a version of "Rainbow Connection" written by the troupe.
Segel got his start in the short-lived but critically acclaimed television series "Freaks and Geeks." He later wrote and starred in the 2008 movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," which earned more than $100 million worldwide.
For the first time, 21st-century audiences are able to hear the voice of Otto von Bismarck, one of the 19th century's most important figures.
The National Park Service announced this week that the German chancellor's voice has been identified among those found on a dozen recorded wax cylinders, each more than 120 years old, that were once stored near Thomas Edison's cot in his West Orange, N.J., lab. They include music and dignitaries, including the voice of the only person born in the 18th century believed to be available on a recording.
The trove includes Bismarck's voice reciting songs and imploring his son to live morally and eat and drink in moderation.
The recordings were made in 1889 and 1890 by Theo Wangemann, whom Edison sent to supervise the use of the Edison Phonograph Works machines on display at the Paris World's Fair in 1889 before traveling to his native Germany. Feaster describes Wangemann as "the first serious professional recording engineer." While in Paris, he recorded orchestras, pianists, a comedian and others. He even recorded on the then-new Eiffel Tower.
While sound recordings were made as early as 1859, the ones on Edison's wax phonographs were in the first generation of intended for playback.

Workers have begun stripping away history at Ryman Auditorium.
A crew began gently removing the Nashville landmark's 61-year-old oak floorboards with pry bars Saturday morning. That's the first step in a two-week renovation that will leave the storied "Mother Church" of country music with a new Brazilian teak stage.
The old floorboards will be taken to a new location and stored. Gaylord Entertainment officials have not yet announced what will be done with them.
The stage at the National Historic Landmark needs replacing because of age. It's just the second stage in the Ryman's 120-year history and it won't stand up to another refinishing. The boards have become permanently scuffed and marked, and the ones pulled up for reporters on Saturday were just a half-inch thick.
An 18-inch strip of the blonde oak will be left at the front of the stage to commemorate the auditorium's rich history. The teak, already stacked in a corner, is slightly darker.

Lana Clarkson was shot and killed in the foyer of Spector's Alhambra mansion nine years ago.
Spector was convicted in the death and is serving a 19 years-to-life sentence.

A federal judge has ruled there's sufficient evidence to allow a polygamous family made famous by a reality TV show to pursue a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Utah's bigamy law.
U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups on Friday dismissed Utah's governor and attorney general from the case, but allowed the suit to proceed against Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Buhman, the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune report.
Buhman threatened to prosecute Kody Brown and his four wives - Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn - after the TLC show "Sister Wives" debuted in September 2010, but his office has not filed charges.
The family sued Buhman, Gov. Gary Herbert and Attorney General Mark Shurtleff in July 2011, claiming Utah's bigamy statute violates its constitutional rights to due process, equal protection, free exercise of religion, free speech and freedom of association. Waddoups, in his 21-page ruling, wrote that he dismissed Herbert and Shurtleff from the case because Shurtleff assured the Browns that they wouldn't be prosecuted. Shurtleff has a policy of not prosecuting consenting adult polygamists as long as they're not committing other crimes.
Brown moved his wives and 16 children from Lehi to the Las Vegas area in January 2001.

Washington has never been more partisan, right? Or is that common lament simply a trick of nostalgia? A look at the numbers reveals that the problem is not, it turns out, all in our heads: over the last four decades, Congressional polarization has steadily increased.
Since 1947, Americans for Democratic Action, a liberal advocacy group, has tracked the political positions of each Senate and House member, scoring how they voted each year on 20 key bills covering a variety of social and economic issues. (Many groups from across the political spectrum calculate lawmakers' dedication to various ideologies and causes. The Signal is merely using this group's data because it is collected over many years and is based on the controversial votes that reveal the fault lines in the House and Senate.)
In the graph below, the colored bands indicate where the middle 50% of each party ranks on the ADA's scale. A narrower band means the heart of the party usually votes in tandem; a wider band shows that lawmakers feel a certain license to vote against the party on more occasions.
As you can see, the centers of the two parties have not come close to overlapping since Ronald Reagan was president. Even if the general deviation from the party line--the width of the colored band--resembled those looser times, the overall adherence to party doctrine would prevent any overlap.

The Diocese of Orange has closed on its purchase of the shimmering Crystal Cathedral and surrounding 31-acre grounds, putting the iconic building seen as a testament to televangelism in Catholic hands.
The diocese said Friday that escrow proceedings had closed on its $57.5 million purchase of the property, which will become the site of a long-sought cathedral for Orange County's nearly 1.3 million Catholics.
The sale of the sprawling property in Garden Grove was critical for the financially ailing Crystal Cathedral to help pay creditors and emerge from federal bankruptcy protection.
The sale of the building designed by renowned architect Philip Johnson could mark an end to the storied televangelist ministry broadcast that came crashing down in hard times.
Many churchgoers opposed the sale of the building to the diocese, preferring an alternative presented in a bidding war by Orange County's Chapman University that would have let the ministry continue to use the site. But church board members and founder Rev. Robert H. Schuller decided in the end they wanted to keep the building as a house of worship.

Inmates working at a Vermont correctional unit's print shop managed to sneak a prank image of a pig into a state police crest that is emblazoned on police cars, and 30 cruisers sported the design for the last year, officials said on Thursday.
The official crest depicts a spotted cow against a background of snowy mountains, but the inmates' version featured one of the cow's spots shaped like a pig in an apparent reference to the pejorative word for police, state police spokeswoman Stephanie Dasaro said.
Vermont contracts with correctional facilities employing prisoners to make some print products, including the cruiser decals. Police said someone who works at the print shop changed the emblem from the officially sanctioned design.
A police employee noticed the prank on Wednesday and reported it. Police said the 60 16-inch door decals would be removed as soon as it was practical.
