Ted Rall: Media Freezes Out a Threat to Corporate Owners (uexpress.com)
Edwards scares me, too. He's the first candidate I've ever admired. God help me, I actually believe that he'd rein in the corporations whose boundless greed is bleeding the country dry. If a man with integrity and guts became president, what would I do for a living?
Roger Ebert: John Sayles sets 'Honeydripper' to themes of rhythm & race
John Sayles is the living legend of independent film. He and his life partner, Maggie Renzi, have made 19 features entirely on their own terms. To finance them, Sayles has written, rewritten or ghostwritten screenplays entirely on the terms of others, from "Piranha" to the forthcoming "Jurassic Park" sequel. Their latest film, "Honeydripper," is set at the junction of rhythm & blues and civil rights in the 1950s South, and is getting some of his best reviews.
mj was first, but wrong, with:
I know it wasn't the A Fam (I think they were all BW). Gilligan and the Skipper starte in BW at least, as I'm fairly sure did Hazel. None of those were on the Peacock Network, anyway.
I vaguely remember that Bonanza went color in the 2nd (?) season, and the only kid on the block with a color set became popular on Sunday evenings.
I'm going with E, Julia. It's also Ironic enough to suit my sense of humor.
DanD was second, and correct, reasoning:
I haven't the vaguest idea who/what Hazel or Julia were, so while I can
never remember "C" as black-n-white, though it was never a favorite, I
don't remember Bonanza being B&W either. I'll just take a stab and say
"B."
Alan J was right, and succinct as usual:
Bonanza
ducks' educated guess was good, with:
I'm gonna guess Bonanaza simply because I can't ever remember it in black and white. If that's wrong then I choose Hazel but I think that started (and maybe ended) in b&w.
Sally got it, too:
The first US television show to have all it's episodes filmed in color was "B" or Bonanza!
How well I remember when Dan Blocker (Hoss) dies in the last year of the show (he died in real life, and his character died from an accident in the show) I actually cried. Unlike the dads in, "Father Knows Best" and, "Leave it to Beaver," Lorne Greene was the best dad for me.
What a great show...unlike the drek (Yiddish spelling) on TV today!
Off to reclaim my globe from mien shana boychik (the golden grandson).
joe also was right responding:
That was Bonanza my favorite show when I was a kid.
And, S. Bennett nailed it with:
Bonanza. And now for the amazing facts behind the show. The show itself was initially solely sponsored by RCA (which owned NBC at the time) and its only purpose for being was to sell color televisions. The show was never intended to run as long as it did or expected to become as popular as it did. In fact the early episodes as recounted by Lorne Greene consisted of the Cartwrights chasing squatters off the Ponderosa. As the show progressed and its popularity grew, Greene went to the writers and the sponsor and told them he wanted more lines than, "Get off my land" and he wanted the characters changed to be more likeable and not the robber land barons as initially potrayed. The outdoor locale was chosen to show off the colors and as such was the real intended star and the Cartwrights were just ancilliary characters. Bonanza holds one other record of distinction as well. It was the first prime time network show to guest star an African American. And if memory serves I do believe it was Harry Belafonte.
Notes :
A: All episodes of The Addams Family were filmed in black & white.
B: All episodes of Bonanza were filmed in glorious technicolor.
C: The first season of Gilligan's Island was filmed in black & white; following seasons were in color.
D: Hazel started out in black & white, too, and eventually went to color.
E: All episodes of Julia were filmed in color - 9 years after Bonanza began.
S. Bennett explained why Bonanza was filmed in glorious technicolor very well.
Started off sunny and warm, but clouds rolled in mid-afternoon and there was a steady rain by sunset.

A statue of Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli, the leather-jacketed biker from "Happy Days," will be erected in the city where the TV sitcom was set, now that local groups have raised the $85,000 needed to do it, civic leaders said Friday.
Henry Winkler, who played Fonzie during the show's run from 1974 to 1984, called the "Bronze the Fonz" project "a phenomenal compliment."
Winkler was in Milwaukee on Friday morning when organizers officially announced the money had been raised. Plans call for dedicating the statue around Labor Day. It will likely be downtown along the Milwaukee River.
Two booster groups, VISIT Milwaukee and Spirit Milwaukee, spearheaded the fundraising. Among the donors was cable network TV Land, which has sponsored similar statues such as ones of Bob Newhart in Chicago and Mary Tyler Moore in Minneapolis.

The Federal Communications Commission has proposed a $1.4 million fine against 52 ABC Television Network stations over a 2003 broadcast of cop drama NYPD Blue.
The fine is for a scene where a boy surprises a woman as she prepares to take a shower. The scene depicted "multiple, close-up views" of the woman's "nude buttocks" according to an agency order issued late Friday.
ABC is owned by the Walt Disney Co. The fines were issued against 52 stations either owned by or affiliated with the network.
FCC's definition of indecent content requires that the broadcast "depicts or describes sexual or excretory activities" in a "patently offensive way" and is aired between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

New South Wales state premier Morris Iemma said Crowe was one of three leading figures who would feature in a promotional campaign to promote the city in the United States later this year.
The other two ambassadors named alongside Crowe are businessman Peter Holmes a Court and world surfing champion Layne Beachley.

Two handwritten letters by 19th century French author Emile Zola have been stolen from a safe at the municipal offices of the village where he lived and served on the local council, officials said Saturday.
The safe was forced by burglars who broke into the building at Medan, west of Paris, on Wednesday night and stole 1,500 euros (2,100 dollars) in cash and cheques as well as the letters.
Zola moved to Medan in 1878 and lived there until his accidental death in 1902, writing many of his best-known novels, including "Germinal" while he was there.
A large U.S. spy satellite has lost power and propulsion and could hit the Earth in late February or March, government officials said Saturday.
The satellite, which no longer can be controlled, could contain hazardous materials, and it is unknown where on the planet it might come down, they said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the information is classified as secret.
"Appropriate government agencies are monitoring the situation," said Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the National Security Council. "Numerous satellites over the years have come out of orbit and fallen harmlessly. We are looking at potential options to mitigate any possible damage this satellite may cause."

Online and mainstream media reports that country crooner and famous Middleburg resident Slim Whitman died Sunday on his 84th birthday are dead wrong, the singer told the Times-Union Wednesday.
"I can still sing," he said. "If you are dead, you can't sing."
Whitman was famous in the early 1950s for hit singles such as Indian Love Call and Love Song of the Waterfall and gained even more popularity in Europe.
In 1996, Indian Love Call was used in the climax of the movie Mars Attacks to fend off the invasion.
"I'm the one who killed the blasted Martians," he said.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez switched from coffee to another stimulant during a speech on Saturday -- he popped a coca leaf into his mouth and chewed it while defending the use of the plant.
Bolivian President Evo Morales, an advocate of the Andean nation's indigenous coca growers, brought Chavez coca leaves while in Caracas for a summit of Latin American leaders allied with Chavez.
"I knew you wouldn't let me down, my friend, I was running out," Chavez said as he received the leaves from Morales during the televised summit. He broke one in half and chewed it, drawing applause.
"Capitalism and international mafias have converted (it) into cocaine, but coca is not cocaine," he said.

A shadowy Internet group has succeeded in taking down a Scientology Web site after effectively declaring war on the church and calling for it to be destroyed.
The group, which goes by the name of Anonymous, is a disparate collection of hackers and activists.
It called for a wave of attacks against Scientology after accusing the church of "campaigns of misinformation" and "suppression of dissent."
The group -- which calls itself an "Internet hate machine" -- set up a Web site to coordinate a string of attacks using phone, Internet and fax methods, which it called "Project Chanology."
A letter that a young girl in Japan sent into the sky in a balloon some 15 years ago has been found on a fish hauled from 1,000 metres (3,300 feet) below the Pacific.
A fisherman found the still legible piece of paper sitting on a sticky flatfish in his catch on Thursday, along with a torn-off string and the fragment of a red balloon.
He opened the folded paper, discovering it was a handwritten letter from a six-year-old girl at an elementary school in Kawasaki, 150 kilometres (93 miles) away from where the fish was caught off Choshi port.
The sender, Natsumi Shirahige, and her friends released letters as part of events to mark the school's 120th anniversary, which was in 1993.

Dan Martin, a guitar vendor whose clientele included Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Keith Richards and Eddie Van Halen, has died. He was 57.
Martin died Dec. 21, his sister said. The cause of death was not immediately known. His sister said he had been in hospital for about two weeks before he died and had suffered from congestive heart failure, high blood pressure and diabetes.
Starting in high school, Martin would work on guitars in the family basement.
Martin later worked as a roadie with the Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, John Lennon, Bob Dylan and the Band, Foghat, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Stevie Wonder and others.
It was during that time that he bought and sold guitars, making the contacts that led to his first shop, The St. Charles Guitar Exchange. Later he operated Empire Guitars.
Christian Brando, the troubled eldest son of the late famed actor Marlon Brando, has died from pneumonia at a Los Angeles hospital, an attorney said Saturday. He was 49.
Brando died Saturday morning at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, said David Seeley, an attorney representing Marlon Brando's estate.
Born May 11, 1958, the younger Brando had small roles in a handful of movies, including 1968's "I Love You, Alice B. Toklas!" but he was better known for his brushes with the law.
Seeley said Brando was not married at the time of his death and did not leave any children.
