PAUL KRUGMAN: Surging and Purging (NY TIMES)
There's something happening here, and what it is seems completely clear: the Bush administration is trying to protect itself by purging independent-minded prosecutors.
Rabbi Dr. Asher Meir: Sometimes raising pay is cutting costs (jewishworldreview.com)
My experience is that many employers who pride themselves on finding workers willing to work for starvation wages are penny wise and pound foolish. If they get poor workers they have to fire them, and when they get qualified workers they jump to better jobs just as they begin to be productive. While each workplace is different, I think that many employers would find that providing good conditions is an excellent cost-cutting measure.

When Will Smith was starring in "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," one episode revolved around his character driving around in an expensive car and being stopped by the police because they think it is suspicious for a black man to drive such an expensive car. This episode was based on Mr. Smith's real life -- often the police stopped him because they thought it was suspicious for an African American to drive such an expensive car.

"Everybody Hates Chris," the CW sitcom inspired by comedian Chris Rock's Brooklyn childhood, has been renewed for the 2007-2008 season.
The network's announcement Friday was a vote of confidence for the critically acclaimed comedy that has struggled to find an audience on the new network.
"Everybody Hates Chris" averages a 1.0 rating with 2.92 million viewers for the CW, tying for 159th among this season's broadcast TV shows. It averaged 4.26 million viewers last season when it was on UPN, which merged with The WB to form the CW.

"The Drowsy Chaperone," that fictional 1920s musical celebrated in the hit Broadway musical (with the same name), is getting its own recording - on vinyl.
It will be issued Feb. 14 as a limited edition vinyl record by Ghostlight Records, the company that produced the original Broadway cast recording of the production now on view at the Marquis Theatre.
That show, which was created by a group of Toronto friends, is a musical-theatre fantasy in which an obsessed character called "Man in Chair," played by Bob Martin, sits on stage and plays a vintage recording of what he says is his favourite show - "The Drowsy Chaperone" - and the musical comes to life.

Former POW Jessica Lynch became a mother on Friday, giving birth to a girl whom she named in honor of a fallen comrade.
Dakota Ann Robinson was delivered by Caesarean section at a local hospital at 5:10 p.m. The infant weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces, said Lynch's publicist, Aly Goodwin Gregg.
Lynch and her boyfriend, Wes Robinson, named Dakota in honor of Lynch's friend, Army Spc. Lori Piestewa of Tuba City, Ariz., who was the first woman to be killed in combat in Iraq. Piestewa's middle name was Dakota, which means friendship or ally, Gregg said.
Prince Charles canceled a traditional skiing holiday in a bid to reduce his carbon footprint, his office said Saturday.
The decision came a day after campaigners and a government minister criticized his decision to fly to New York to collect an award for work on environmental issues.
Prince Charles' Clarence House office said the prince had decided last year to cancel a regular skiing holiday to Switzerland as part of an effort to reduce the number of flights he takes.
After all these centuries, Zeus may have a few thunderbolts left. A tiny group of worshippers plans a rare ceremony Sunday to honor the ancient Greek gods, at Athens' 1,800-year-old Temple of Olympian Zeus. Greece's Culture Ministry has declared the central Athens site off-limits, but worshippers say they will defy the decision.
"These are our temples and they should be used by followers of our religion," said Doreta Peppa, head of the Athens-based Ellinais, a group campaigning to revive the ancient religion.
"Of course we will go ahead with the event ... we will enter the site legally," said Peppa, who calls herself a high priestess of the revived faith. "We will issue a call for peace, who can be opposed to that?"

The beautiful but violent Rio de Janeiro invited the pretty but troubled Naomi Campbell to be its ambassador on Friday, two days after she admitted in a New York court to throwing a mobile phone at her housekeeper.
"She has an image that is the face of Rio de Janeiro, she could represent it abroad like nobody else," Mayor Cesar Maia said on the city's official Web site.
Rio de Janeiro, one of the most violent cities in the world, has asked the government to send federal troops to stop the growing gang violence. On Wednesday, a former Miss Brazil had to undergo surgery on her hand after being attacked outside a Rio fashion show.
Amsterdam's red-light district will soon get a new attraction: a statue to honor prostitutes around the world.
The statue, designed by artist Els Rijerse, will likely be unveiled at the end of March, Dutch news agency ANP reported.
"In many countries, prostitutes struggle and people have no respect for them whatsoever. The statue is meant to give all those men and women strength," Mariska Majoor, a former prostitute who commissioned the statue, told ANP.

Officials in the ritzy coastal town of Palm Beach have voted to fine Donald Trump $1,250 a day for flying a large American flag atop an 80-foot flagpole at his lavish club in violation of town codes.
Code enforcement officials have accused the 60-year-old real-estate mogul of violating zoning guidelines with a flagpole taller than 42 feet, for not obtaining a building permit, and for not getting permission from the landmarks board.
Trump has refused to take down the 15-by-25-foot flag. He has also filed a $25 million lawsuit against the town arguing, in part, that officials are selectively enforcing ordinances and that flying the American flag at his Mar-A-Lago club is a constitutionally protected expression of free speech.

A judge threw out a defamation lawsuit by a man who claimed Fox Television and a hip-hop magazine falsely accused him of involvement in the unsolved murder of rapper Notorious B.I.G.
A Superior Court judge on Thursday dismissed the suit by Tyruss Himes against Fox-owned KTTV-TV in Los Angeles and XXL magazine.
The judge granted defense motions to dismiss the lawsuit on grounds that the stories were constitutionally protected free speech.
The judge also said Himes had failed to prove that the media outlets acted with malice and reckless disregard for the truth, which is the standard of proof in defamation cases, said Himes' attorney, Arthur G. Lesmez.
Himes sued Fox and XXL Magazine in July. The suit claimed that Himes lost a record deal because KTTV-TV aired a news report implicating him in the Wallace killing and XXL printed a 2005 article indicating that he was "involved in assembling the team" to murder Wallace.
