Marc Dion: Some People Are Looking for Him ... (Creators Syndicate)
The pope speaks out against income inequality and I go cover the fights in an old, cold red brick hall on a one-way side street, across the street from a bar and down the street from another bar, one block from an abandoned church that the junkies have been plundering for copper pipes.
The United States Geographical Survey (USGS) states that the geographic center of North America is "6 miles west of Balta, Pierce County, North Dakota" at approximately 48° 10'N 100° 10'W / 48.167°N 100.167°W / 48.167; -100.167, approximately 24 kilometres (15 mi) from Rugby, North Dakota. The USGS further states that "No marked or monumented point has been established by any government agency as the geographic center of either the 50 States, the conterminous United States, or the North American continent." Nonetheless, there is a 4.6-metre (15 ft) field stone obelisk in Rugby claiming to mark the center.

Charlie was first, and correct, with:
6 miles west of Balta, Pierce County, North Dakota" at approximately 48°10?N 100°10?W, approximately 24 kilometres (15 mi) from Rugby, North Dakota. The USGS further states that "No marked or monumented point has been established by any government agency as the geographic center of either the 50 States, the conterminous United States, or the North American continent
Furthermore;
In geography, the centroid of the two-dimensional shape of a region of the Earth's surface (projected radially to sea level or onto a geoid surface) is often known as its geographical centre. There has long been debate over the methods of calculation of the geographical centres of various countries and regions, such as whether to include offshore islands, and in that case, if the islands should be moved towards the mainland, making it possible to build a connected 2D model of the country and identify the geographical centre as the centre of gravity (equilibrium point) using a needle. An alternative to defining the geographical centre as the centroid is to define it as the point farthest from the boundary of the country (either the sea, or, in the case of constituent countries, a land border), this is similar to the pole of inaccessibility (place furthest from a coastline). These methods give quite different answers.

PS: On Friday morning, the kids and I were finally able to wait for their ride to school outside. The temp was over double digits (10o and above), actually it was almost 30o, heat wave here! No snow on the ground, no puddles, and sunny! They ran around like frisky puppies! Good thing, the wet weather and cold are back, and predicted through the next week... We would rather be out in the fresh air, and not parked in front of the TV... I should have raked yesterday afternoon, now the ground is covered in wet snow...

Lois Of The Loo In Oregon answered:
Visit beautiful Rugby, North Dakota, located just 15 miles
from the exact center of North America. Established in 1886
at a railroad junction as a public restroom, Rugby is a
dynamic and vibrant town which now has a thriving population
of 2,876 human units, (only 13% of which live below the
poverty line, with a median age of 47 and an average IQ of
72), and boasts many modern innovations like electricity,
and some flushing toilets, AND TWO radio stations, AM AND
FM! While there don't forget to drop by the Victorian Dress
Museum, where, for a small bribe, you can try on the
world's oldest bustle, once worn by Queen Victoria and J. Edgar Hoover.

@Joe: Sir, being compared to Mr. Peter Pan is in fact a
GREAT compliment. Not only did Peter look pretty damn hot in
those green tights, but he fed Captain Hook to a crocodile
AND he banged every chick in Neverland (Wendy, Princess
Tigerlily, all those slutty mermaids, and you KNOW he and
Tinkerbell were doing...SOMETHING!).

The Geographic Center of North America lies in the town of Rugby, North Dakota. Looks like a fun place, eh?

Rugby, ND... which is located on the US-2 'highway'... and if'n ya Head East- Never Been Any Reason on US-2 about 830 miles you'd drive by my old house on US-2 near the eastern terminus of the western section of US-2 in St. Ignace, MI of Michigan's U.P. (the future new state of "Superior" - Motto: "Where the Middle of Nowhere is Somewhere"). The last 100 miles runs along the northern shore of Lake Michigan and has some stunning vistas (on a clear day one can just see the northern islands of the Beaver Island Archipelago) and beautiful white sandy beaches (Now damn'd cold - and icy - and 'moose belly deep' in snow... no matter, though - one gets use to it). The western terminus of the western US-2 segment is in Everett, WA.

Just previously, I lived on US-1 in Rockland, ME... Now, how many folks, do ya suppose, have lived on both US-1 AND then US-2? Consecutively? Yeah, that's one reason (of many, o' course) why I'm 'special'... Un-huh... that's right.
'Casino Night', folks... Let's see if'n I can take some of my 'Cousins' money...

I know. I know. It's a place in North Dakota, I can't remember the name of the town right now, but I know it's close to Malmstrom. Dang it, can't think of it , I know it's the name of a sport or something. Gotta look it up, it's hell getting old. Can't remember stuff. Oh yeah, there it is. Rugby, North Dakota. But then Rugby isn't really a sport is it? More like organized mayhem.
Now the Spiritual Center of the world is a place called Harney Peak these days. In the "Old Days" it was called Hinhan Kaga Paha by the people who didn't discover it but knew it was there all along. It's in the Black Hills of South Dakota, my old stomping grounds. I used to hunt down below the peak and believe me, there are some powerful places on that mountain. You can feel them.

Bill Murray is more than a comedy legend, he's become something of a mythological figure amongst fans, with an ever-growing series of tales involving him showing up out of nowhere to interact with unsuspecting strangers in humorous ways .
But on Friday, Murray showed up in plain sight when Reddit announced he was taking part in their popular "Ask Me Anything" series.
Some highlights:

In a letter to his college friend, a young J.D. Salinger writes about yearning for fame. In ensuing correspondence to the same woman and her son over the next four decades, the American author describes how much he loathes his status as a celebrity.
In the letters from Salinger to Ruth Smith Maier, a woman he met while attending Ursinus College in Pennsylvania in 1938, the two share stories about parenthood, working as a writer and general banter about popular culture.
The letters, which experts say humanize the notoriously reclusive author as he experiences a range of life-changing events, were acquired by the Harry Ransom Center, a humanities research library at the University of Texas, and made available to researchers this week.
In the earliest correspondence from January 1941, a confident 22-year-old Jerry Salinger writes to Ruthie that he intends to leave his mark as an author.
The next letter is dated 17 years later in 1958. During the intervening years, Salinger has been published in the New Yorker magazine, served as a soldier in some of the most brutal World War Two fighting in Europe, released his most famous novel "The Catcher in the Rye" and the book "Nine Stories".
Going to the movies got pricier last year as 3D films and higher ticket costs made catching the latest blockbuster a more expensive proposition, according to new data by the National Association of Theater Owners.
The average ticket price rose a little more than 2 percent in 2013 to $8.13, compared to $7.96 in the previous year. It was a record-high annual average, NATO said.
The fourth quarter average was even higher - $8.35, a 3.7 percent jump from the year-ago period - although short of a high-water mark set earlier in the year. The fourth quarter culprit was likely a series of high-profile 3D and IMAX releases such as "Gravity" and "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug." Movies in those formats carry a surcharge.
During the second quarter, average ticket prices hit a record high of $8.38. "Iron Man 3? and "Man of Steel" were among the major 3D releases in theaters during that three-month period ending June.
The star of ABC's "The Bachelor" made anti-gay comments that drew a swift rebuke from the network and an apology from the bachelor himself on Saturday.
Juan Pablo Galavis told website The TV Page that he didn't think a gay or bisexual bachelor would set a good example for kids. Galavis also told the site Friday that gays were more "pervert, in a sense," adding that he could be mistaken.
On Saturday, Galavis posted an apology on his Facebook page, saying he respects gay people, has gay friends, including one "who's like a brother," and regrets using the word "pervert." Galavis, who is Latino, blamed that latter word choice on the fact that English is his second language, after Spanish.
"What I meant to say was that gay people are more affectionate and intense and for a segment of the TV audience this would be too racy to accept. The show is very racy as it is and I don't let my 5 year old daughter watch it," the single dad from Miami wrote online.

The resumption of commercial horse slaughter in the U.S. was blocked Friday as President Barack Obama signed a budget measure that withholds money for required federal inspections of the slaughtering process.
Although the measure provides temporary funding for the federal government, it stops the Agriculture Department from spending money for inspections necessary for slaughterhouses to ship horse meat interstate and eventually export it to overseas consumers.
"This clear message from Washington echoes the opinions of an overwhelming number of Americans from coast to coast: horse slaughter is abhorrent and unacceptable," said Matt Bershadker, president and CEO of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Blair Dunn, a lawyer for Valley Meat, said the company will continue to wage a legal fight to convert its cattle processing plant to the slaughtering of horses. He contended that the federal move to withhold money for meat inspections could cause U.S. trade violations.

A former Wisconsin medical examiner who took a piece of spinal column that had been removed from a corpse to train her cadaver dog, pleaded guilty to felony charges on Friday, according to court documents.
Traci England, 46, will be sentenced February 10 on two felony counts of misconduct in public office. Theft and obstruction charges against England were dismissed as part of a plea bargain, the Forest County Circuit Court records showed.
The criminal complaint said England took a piece of bone from a corpse's spinal column after another medical examiner removed it during an autopsy on September 5, 2011.
Investigators wrote in the complaint that England "made a comment on how lucky she was to have gotten this section of the spine because it was hard to come by."
During a search of her Town of Newbold home on January 4, 2012, investigators found what appeared to be brain and liver tissue along with a piece of bone in bags on a shelf in her garage, the complaint said.
The founder of the protest group Code Pink Medea Benjamin (L) protests against U.S. President Barack Obama and the NSA before his arrival at the Department of Justice in Washington, January 17, 2014. Obama banned U.S. eavesdropping on the leaders of close friends and allies on Friday and began reining in the vast collection of Americans' phone data in a series of reforms triggered by Edward Snowden's revelations.

Never underestimate a high school student's ability to craft an inspired prank.
Going back to the '80s for inspiration, Sairam Gudiseva wrote an essay with a "rickroll" message best
to be enjoyed by fans of good-natured shenanigans.
Give Gudiseva props. It isn't easy to write about scientist Niels Bohr, while working in Rick Astley lyrics that
you may miss on first pass. Gudiseva posted a copy of his essay to Twitter, with the Astley lyrics marked
up with a yellow highlighter. As the Independent noted, it's impressive to write an essay on physics,
never mind the time it must have taken to get each lyric to line up perfectly.
