Mark Shields: Please Tell Me Why (Creators Syndicate)
It probably had something to do with the countless hours involuntarily spent assembling, disassembling and cleaning my M-1 rifle, and in seeing up-close the damage semi-automatic weapons can inflict, but I have never thought of guns as anything other than brutally efficient tools for crippling and killing human beings.

Daniel Hernandez, the 20-year-old college junior who saved Rep. "Doing something one-off is not heroic," Hernandez told a reporter. "I think the heroes are people like Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords."
Paul Krugman: Can Europe Be Saved? (New York Times Magazine)
THERE'S SOMETHING peculiarly apt about the fact that the current European crisis began in Greece. For Europe's woes have all the aspects of a classical Greek tragedy, in which a man of noble character is undone by the fatal flaw of hubris.

Gidget... What I remember most about that program was: It was one of the first 'color' programs on TV, her boyfriend's name was 'Moondoggie' and her addressing the audience at an episode's end and signing off with 'Toodles!'...

I had to put on my thinking cap here. As I recall, Fields appeared in a TV series, "Gidget" in the 1960s. I was in college at that time, in NYC, busy studying, protesting, and becoming politically involved - while she scampered around a California beach (in a scandalous at the time, two-piece bathing suit), boy-crazy, with a surf board - all of which, I definitely could not identify!
Hussy, in her skimpy swim suit!
Hear tell that she went into the convent after this photo hit the press, Hahaha!
PS: Note to B2BB: Oh great, now I can have nightmares of your cousin, "Bruno the Bruiser" hitting me up for chocolate sprinkles in the name of the BCE Poll! Thank you very much! ;)

Sally Field made her TV debut in 1965 with a starring role as the boy-crazy surfer girl Frances Elizabeth 'Gidget' Lawrence in the ABC sitcom "Gidget." The series was first broadcasted on ABC from September 15, 1965, through April 21, 1966.
"The big issue in 'Gidget' was my bellybutton. I could never show it. All the other girls bounced around in skimpy bikinis. Gidget's bathing suit always had to cover her bellybutton. Gidget was only half a person; all fantasy and no kissing. It was a reflection of the destructive morality of the 50s and 60s, which is when I was brought up. Everybody thought that men were out to get you, especially if you showed your bellybutton. And men, in turn, thought they had to get you. When young people get married thinking like that, and so many did, it has to mean trouble." Sally Field
I didn't see much TV during that period of my life. I was much too busy drinking and trying to get women and see their bellybuttons..
Damn! I already used the nude photo of Sally Field.
And, Me replied:
first tv series was "Gidget" in 1965

A Ferrari that John Lennon bought hours after passing his driving test may fetch as much as $220,000 at an auction in Paris next month. The light blue Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Coupe, included in a Bonhams sale at the Grand Palais on Feb. 5, was in a jam of luxury cars that local dealerships sent to the Beatle's Weybridge home in February 1965 on the day he earned his driver's license...

Even as prosecutors build a case against the Army private suspected of passing hundreds of thousands of diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks, the State Department is promoting a documentary film that celebrates Pentagon Papers leaker Daniel Ellsberg.
Amid its struggle to contain damage from the WikiLeaks revelations, the State Department announced Saturday that "The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers" has been selected as one of 18 films that will tour the world this year as part of its "American Documentary Showcase" program.
Ellsberg, whom the film portrays as a whistleblower of conscience, has been a champion of Pfc. Bradley E. Manning, the alleged leaker of the documents who is currently jailed. He has also spoken in defense of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who may also face charges for publishing classified information.
While Manning remains in prison awaiting trial, the Obama administration has loudly denounced Assange for releasing the documents that detail the inner workings of American foreign policy and contain blunt assessments of foreign leaders and governments. The administration says the documents were stolen and demanded that WikiLeaks return them.
But the administration has not gone to court, as the Nixon White House did in the Pentagon Papers case in 1971, to try to stop their publication.

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma is among the big names set to perform at the Kansas City Symphony in its first season at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
The Kansas City Star reported that other marquee names that will be part of the 2011-12 season are pianist Emanuel Ax, violinist Joshua Bell, Kansas City-born opera superstar Joyce DiDonato and guest conductor Christoph von Dohnanyi.
Ma and DiDonato sent video greetings at a news conference Friday expressing their excitement over joining music director Michael Stern and the Symphony in their new state-of-the-art performance home.
Stern's programs will feature some of the boldest and grandest classics - Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth, Gustav Mahler's Second, Johannes Brahms' "German Requiem." Also part of the mix will be three world premieres, celebrating Kansas City and its fountains, and classics never played by the Symphony.
The Symphony also is going big with its Pops Series next season. Most notably, "Star Trek" actor George Takei will read dramatic narratives during performances of feature scores from great science-fiction fare.

Norma Morris says Stanley had the procedure Monday after experiencing a lengthy bout of sluggishness and lack of energy. She told the Roanoke Times that Stanley was feeling better when she spoke to him by phone Thursday night, and he is expected to be fine.
The Grammy Award-winning musician only had to cancel one show. His next scheduled performance is at the Grand Ole Opry on Jan. 21 and 22.

Doctors are keeping a close watch on Zsa Zsa Gabor who was resting comfortably as she recovered from surgery to amputate her right leg - an operation that doctors said was necessary to save her life, her publicist says.
Gabor's blood pressure and heart rate were normal and she was doing well late Friday, John Blanchette said. He said she'll be in the hospital for another week or two and hopefully will be home by her 94th birthday on Feb. 6.
"The surgery today (Friday) went well, however, she is in frail health so we will continue to monitor her closely," said Dr. David Rigberg, associate professor of vascular surgery at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. He said there were no complications during the surgery.
The FX firefighters' drama "Rescue Me" will end its seven-year run less than a week before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
FX President John Landgraf said Saturday that the Sept. 6 finale date was chosen intentionally. The series, with Denis Leary as the star and co-creator, is a story about New York firefighters dealing with the grief of losing friends and relatives in the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center.
"It seemed appropriate not to air it on the day," he said, "because there are more solemn and appropriate things to do on the day. The weeks surrounding the day seemed to be the appropriate place to do it."
The end of the series will deal on some level with a catharsis that comes at the end of the grieving period, he said.

The NBC comedy's executive producer, Greg Daniels, says Carell will be gone before the season-ending episodes in May. The final episodes of the season will focus on the scrambling to replace him at the Scranton branch of the mythical Dunder Mifflin paper company.
Carell had said previously that he was quitting the show to concentrate on his movie career. But NBC plans to press on without him.
NBC said Friday that Carell will leave with four episodes left in the season. That means his farewell episode will most likely come in April.

British actress Susannah York, one of the most memorable film faces of the 1960s, has died from cancer aged 72, British media reported late on Saturday.
"She was an absolutely fantastic mother, who was very down to earth," her son, actor Orlando Wells, told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper.
A quintessential English rose with her blonde hair, blue eyes and fresh-faced complexion, along with Julie Christie and Sarah Miles, she was one of the most recognizable actresses from films in the 1960s, winning a swathe of male admirers.
Her film roles became less notable during the 1970s, although she appeared in the box office smash "Superman," but she continued to enjoy an extensive stage career.
Away from acting, York wrote children's books and was an ardent anti-nuclear campaigner.
She vigorously worked for the release of Israeli whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu who disclosed secrets that revealed the Jewish state was building atomic bombs and was in Israel when he was finally set free in 2004 after 18 years in jail.
