For all that's been written posthumously about his eight Grammys and numerous citations, awards never mattered much to the humble man who was Canada's greatest jazz musician, who died of kidney failure December 23 at the age of 82.

1. Southland Tales. Muddled. Self-involved. Overbearingly ambitious. Insufferable. Funny how the critical mud slung at Donnie Darko on release has the same consistency as the sh*t storm that raged against Southland Tales, yet another-how dare he!?-ultra-convoluted sci-fi satire from the incorrigibly precocious Richard Kelly.

What was the name of the 1st nuclear-powered submarine commissioned by the United States Navy?
A: Pequod
B: Nautilus
C: Golden Hind
D: Argos
E: Corpus Christi
The 1st nuclear-powered submarine, the Nautilus, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1954, made her maiden voyage on Jan. 17, 1955. Source
Marian the Teacher was first, writing:
My guess is b.
Alan J was second, succinctly nailing it (as usual):
the Nautilus
Tom the Folksinger (MS3/SS)
("First they ignore you
Then they laugh at you
Then they fight you
Then you win
MK Gandhi") responded:
the first was USS Nautialus SSN571 Named for the fictional craft of Nemo that sailed under a "mysterious power"
S. Bennett also got it right [well, 'cept for the Capt. Nemo part : )] -
It was the Nautilus commanded of course by Capt Nemo.
Bad2TheBoneBob replied:
B: USS Nautilus commissioned in 1954. Currently part of the Navy Submarine Museum at Groton, CN.
Pat B answered:
the name of the first nuclear-powered submarine was: Nautilus, The Corpus Christi was later and more safisticated.

Dave in Tucson responded:
First US nuclear sub was the Nautilus, which was also the first nuclear sub to cruise under the North Pole. Ever since then veterans of North Pole sub cruises (after a ceremony) are known as "Bluenoses".

In July of 1951, Congress authorized construction of the world's first nuclear powered submarine, USS NAUTILUS (SSN 571).
On the morning of January 17, 1955, at 11 am EST, NAUTILUS' first Commanding Officer, Commander Eugene P. Wilkinson, ordered all lines cast off and signaled the memorable and historic message, "Underway On Nuclear Power."
The USS Nautilus is today located at the Submarine Force Museum, on the Thames River in Groton, Connecticut.
As a kid I spent several summers at the home of an uncle who at the time was a Captain in the USN. at Portsmouth Naval Yard at Kittery, Maine. I have been fascinated by submarines ever since. I knew, now Vice Admiral Wilkinson, who in 1944 was served on the USS Sea Robin, sponsored by my, aunt, Mrs. Homer Ambrose, wife of Captain Ambrose, the Navy Yard's Production Superintendent
That MadCat, JD said:
THAT WAS EASY. NAUTILUS. I'M OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER WHEN IT WAS COMMISSIONED.
And, Sally responded:
Well, this is my guess dejour: "B" the Nautilus. Actually, the Nautilus was the sixth ship of the fleet to bear the name "Nautilus." Circa 1953, and the world's first nuclear powered submarine.
The "Corpus Christi" was commissioned in 1983 so I believe she is second here, as a nuclear powered fast-attack submarine...
As for Pequod, Golden Hind, and Argos - they are 1) the whaling ship that appears in the 1851 novel "Moby Dick," 2) The Golden Hind was captained by Sir Francis Drake, circa 1580, and, as far as I know, Argos is a city in Greece, and was an historic harbor, named for someone Greek. I could be wrong...

ABC won the evening newscast race for the first time since 1996 last year, as "World News With Charles Gibson" edged out "NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams" by just 90,000 viewers.
According to Nielsen Media Research, ABC averaged 8.4 million viewers and a 2.1 rating/9 share in the demo, followed by NBC with 8.3 million viewers and a 2.1/8 in adults 25-54, the age group targeted by newscast advertisers.
What wasn't in doubt was third place: The "CBS Evening News With Katie Couric" averaged 6.4 million viewers and a 1.6/7 in the demo.
In terms of viewership, ABC was the only network to improve, with a 4% gain over 2006. NBC was down 13% and CBS was down 6%
Hoping to send the message that pets are life-long partners not disposable accessories, a Japanese maker of medicines for animals has begun giving employees who own dogs or cats a monthly "family allowance" for their pets.
The number of pets in Japan has grown with greater affluence and a falling birth rate and there are now more pet cats and dogs than children under age 15, but about 310,000 cats and dogs are put down annually, said Tokyo-based Kyoritsu Seiyaku.
"Everyone has the right to own a pet, but they also have the obligation to raise the pet for its whole life," the company said, explaining why it had decided to offer employees who own dogs and cats a "family allowance" of 1,000 yen (4.50 pounds) per month.
Kyoritsu Seiyaku does not yet allow its employees to take paid leave to grieve when their pets pass away, as does one Japanese pet food maker, but may do so eventually.

People thronged sidewalks in Spain's towns and cities on Saturday to watch traditional parades marking the eve of the Epiphany, a Christian holiday celebrating the story of the three wise men believed to have followed a bright star to offer gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the newborn Jesus in Bethlehem.

A massive collection of 1970s music including original recordings by reggae greats Bob Marley and Peter Tosh has disappeared from the archives of the former Jamaica Broadcasting Corp., authorities said Saturday.
The possible theft of thousands of vinyl records and compact discs is a blow to the island's history, said Olivia Grange, Jamaica's information minister.
Workers at the newly formed Public Broadcasting Corp. of Jamaica noticed the disappearances earlier this week while touring the old JBC building. They had planned to use the archived material for their first programs, Grange said.
Fox will delay the release of "27 Dresses" until January 18, the first day of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, citing an overwhelming response to sneak previews for the Katherine Heigl romantic comedy.
Moving the opening weekend from January 11 allows the studio to maximize holiday sales, get in another round of nationwide sneak previews January 13, and offer the film as a clear alternative to sci-fi thriller "Cloverfield" and the comedy "Mad Money," which are also opening that weekend.
The "27 Dresses" sneak previews played December 27 to 539 theaters nationwide, with 27 of those previews featuring models wearing bridesmaid dresses adorned with the film's title and credits, a Fox representative said.
The Diary of Anne Frank, the most widely read book on the Holocaust, which has been rewritten for plays, movies and TV dramas, is now being made into a Spanish musical.
On Friday, a theatre troupe visited the tiny Amsterdam apartment where the Jewish teenager hid from the Nazis, seeking inspiration for their characters and the show.
The Anne Frank Museum has endorsed the concept and guided the 22-member cast and directors through the space where the Frank family hid during the German occupation of the Netherlands in the Second World War.

More than 1 million U.S. households have requested $40 government coupons since Tuesday to help pay for converter boxes for the coming switch to digital television, officials said on Friday.
The government has taken requests for almost 1.9 million of the coupons from more than 1 million households since the coupons became available on January 1, according to the Commerce Department, which is overseeing the program.
The coupon program is aimed at owners of traditional analog sets who view over-the-air broadcast TV. Those sets will not work after the digital switch on February 17, 2009 without a converter box.
Congress ordered the switch to digital television because it will free up valuable airwaves for other uses, such as for police and fire departments. It will also lead to improved picture and sound for TV viewers.
A judge on Friday referred to mediation a lawsuit by a veteran writer who claims he pitched the idea for the hit "Hannah Montana" show and has never been compensated.
In a lawsuit filed last summer, Buddy Sheffield said he pitched a television series called "Rock and Roland" to the Disney Channel in 2001.
"The series revolved around a junior high school student who appears to lead an entirely unremarkable life, but is secretly a pop/rock star and the main breadwinner for his family," Sheffield said in the suit.
Disney Channel officials were at first enthusiastic about the project but later decided to pass, the lawsuit claimed.

Wesley Snipes is trying again to have his federal tax-evasion trial moved from this central Florida city.
Snipes' lawyer, Robert Barnes, filed a motion with a federal appeals court in Atlanta on Friday, arguing that U.S. District Judge William T. Hodges erred last month when he denied Snipes' motions to relocate and postpone the trial.
The actor's legal team argued Snipes cannot get a fair trial in Ocala, located about 80 miles north of Orlando. Snipes previously filed two motions to dismiss or transfer the trial because of racial prejudices.
Barnes also filed a motion Friday to put the trial - scheduled to begin Jan. 14 - on hold until the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rules on the change of venue request.
A sidekick of TV bounty hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman turned himself in to authorities Friday after a shopping center security guard reported seeing him naked in his pickup truck, performing a lewd act, police said.
But Tim Chapman's lawyer insists his client spilled juice on himself and was just changing clothes Thursday night.
The guard told Chapman to put on his clothes and get out of the truck, police said. After dressing, Chapman started his truck and drove over a sidewalk, nearly hitting the guard, then drove off, police said.
The guard told police that he recognized Chapman from Duane Chapman's show "Dog the Bounty Hunter" and that he was performing an unspecified lewd act. Duane Chapman and Tim Chapman are not related.

MC Hammer hasn't topped the music charts since the early 1990s but the former rap star says he has another hit in him - only this time around he'll produce it as a Silicon Valley entrepreneur.
Hammer, whose real name is Stanley Burrell, is choreographing a new career as co-founder and chief strategy officer of DanceJam.com.
The website, scheduled to debut in mid-January, will try to upstage YouTube and become the Internet's hub for sharing and watching dance videos. DanceJam then hopes to make money by grabbing a piece of the rapidly growing Internet advertising market, which is expected to take in $27.5 billion in 2008, according to eMarketer.
If the business works, DanceJam could help Hammer compensate for losing his fortune when he went bankrupt in 1996 with nearly $14 million in debts.
A 102-year-old man is setting sail Saturday to start a new life in New Zealand, becoming Britain's oldest emigrant in the process, BBC television reported.
Eric King-Turner and his New Zealander wife Doris, 87, have decided to leave their village in Hampshire, for the city of Nelson on the South Island, seeking adventure and a cure for her homesickness.
"I think I possibly like wandering about a bit. I somehow thought that it might be rather fun to move to New Zealand," said sprightly retired dentist Eric, who served on HMS Invincible during World War II.
The couple, both widowed, have been married for 13 years and shared the same surname. They met when the New Zealand King-Turners researched their ancestry in Britain.
