Andrew Tobias: DEPT. OF HOPEFUL SIGNS
Twenty-five years ago there were, worldwide, more than 3 million cases of guinea worm. Today, just 3,500 - headed quite possibly to zero. It's something we Americans - who have never suffered its misery - can feel very good about, as it is largely our leadership (most particularly Jimmy Carter's) and our resources (significantly including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) that have made it possible.
TERRY J. ALLEN: Restless Vagina Syndrome (inthesetimes.com)
It's not your fault, ladies (and certainly not your partner's), that you don't orgasm every time you have intercourse, or that you lack the libido of a 17-year-old boy. You have a disease: female sexual dysfunction (FSD), and the pharmaceutical industry wants to help.
"Dancing in the Dark: A Cultural History of the Great Depression" by Morris Dickstein: A review by Arthur Krystal
By 1932 the economy had deteriorated to such an extent that men set forest fires so that they could be hired to put them out and committed crimes because jails, at least, served food. For the first time in the country's history, the number of people leaving America was greater than the number of those arriving. Asked whether there had ever been such an economic downturn, John Maynard Keynes replied, "Yes. It was called the Dark Ages, and it lasted four hundred years."
ARNAUD DESPLECHIN: Wes ANDERSON (interviewmagazine.com)
In the five films that Wes Anderson has directed, from his 1996 debut feature 'Bottle Rocket' to 2007's picaresque 'The Darjeeling Limited,' he has managed to assemble a constellation of actors who might best be described as "Wes's Gang."
Richard Roeper's worst movies of 2009 (suntimes.com)
From the worst to the 100th worst, the most odious movies of the 2000s:
1. "I Know Who Killed Me" (2007) Poor Lindsay Lohan. At the outset of the 2000s, she was an adorable tweener who had won raves for the remake of "The Parent Trap"; by 2004, she was established as a rising young star, thanks to her winning performances in films such as "Mean Girls" and "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen."
Richard Roeper's best films of 2009 (suntimes.com)
The 100 best movies I saw in the 2000s:
1. "The Departed" (2006) A cop goes undercover as a gangster, a gangster goes undercover as a cop, and from that point on we're dealing with Shakespearean issues of identity and true self while the blood splatters the wall at every turn.
"I MAY BE FULL OF SHIT BUT BCE IS THE BEST. YOU BETCHA!"
"I MAY BE A CHICKEN HAWK,YELLOW BELLY, BACKSTABBING ASSHOLE BUT I LOVE BCE!"
"DON'T MAKE ME GO WMD ON YOU! PUT SOME MONEY ON BCE!!!"
"DON'T BE CRUEL! SAVE BCE!"
"JESUS H. CHRIST, WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE THINKING. AM I SUPPOSED TO DO ALL THE WORK. LOAVES AND FISHES, WATER INTO WINE? GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER AND SAVE BCE!!!
OK, OK. I'LL GIVE YOU A SPECIAL ROOM IN HEAVEN TO PLAY TRIVIA!
DON'T MAKE ME DO THE CRUCIFIXION SHIT AGAIN. THAT WILL REALLY PISS ME OFF!"

Mister Ed was the first series ever to debut as a midseason replacement.

Marian the teacher was first, and correct, with:
Mr. Ed
Alan J replied:
Mister Ed
mj answered:
That was Mr. Ed. It was in a time before the Family Hour and I think it came on around 7 pm in the Pittsburgh area (after Paul Shannon's Adventure Time).
Jim from CA, retired to ID, replied:
I think the first one was All in the Family
Sally said:
As there is much, "weeping and gnashing of teeth" going on here, I can't be expected to pay a lot of attention to the next-to-the-last Trivia Question of the Day, now can I??
That being said, I think that "Mister Ed" was the first series ever to debut as a midseason replacement.
"What do you mean that you haven't sent Marty any money yet??" "Down you go..."
"Happy" Saturday, boo, hoo, hoo, Oh God, no more page, sob, HUGE shiver, crying real tears...
MAM noted:
Mr. Ed was the first TV series ever to debut as a midseason replacement.
And, Joe S responded:
The answer is Mr. Ed. See, I did not know that. I learned that right now, right here on Marty's Bartcop Education, I mean Entertainment. Now if BCE goes blank, we lose a valuable educational tool. We can learn things here everyday. How many of you knew that Popeye was 80? And did you see "The Nearly Genuine and Truly Marvelous Psychoneuropharmacological Mental Medicine Show" from Bonkers Institute for Nearly Genuine Research? That's good stuff, and Oh By The Way, Dr Bonkers is one of my best friends. His secret identity is Ben Hansen (don't tell anyone) and we both worked for Michael Moore and the Flint Voice, (later the Michigan Voice) back in the early 80's. See, that's the stuff you'll never know if BCE dies. And if BCE dies, IT WILL BE ON YOUR HEAD! I'm just sayin'.
Please contribute, don't get a visit from "my little friend."
A day late for me to chime in on the creation of Mistake Out, which was eventually marketed as Liquid Paper, so I'll just point out I once worked for Michael Nesmith and he told me the secret of how his mom created it in the first place. She ground up a piece of chalk and mixed it with nail polish. That simple. Millions. Why can't YOU come up with something like that?
While things don't look as gloomy, it's still not very good.
I appreciate the help you've sent, but as it currently stands, the last page will still be tomorrow.
At the same time, I've been deeply touched by the notes of encouragement, and blown away by the generosity of some readers.
This is the last chance to save the e-page.

A Huffington Post spokesman says the left-leaning news and opinion Web site was not hacked when a Twitter social network feed emerged in its name and began issuing insults with a conservative bent.
Mario Ruiz tells The Associated Press in an e-mail Saturday that the account isn't operated by The Huffington Post, but was set up to appear as though it was. He followed up later Saturday to say that Twitter had suspended the account.
Some Twitter subscribers earlier Saturday mistook the mimicked feed for The Huffington Post's own commentary when they were alerted to it by other Twitter users. The feed included mostly unpublishable insults about political and media figures, including President Barack Obama and MSNBC commentator Keith Olbermann.
There also was an admonition to "Vote McCain" in 2012.
Paul MacLeod is a perpetually caffeinated Elvis fanatic who's taking care of business 24-7-365 at the antebellum home he calls "Graceland Too."
Pound on the door at any hour - seriously, it's OK to arrive at 4 in the morning - and the 67-year-old former auto worker will escort you through his discombobulating, floor-to-ceiling collection of photos, records, figurines, cardboard cutouts, candy wrappers, clocks and other random kitsch featuring the King of Rock 'n' Roll.
MacLeod says he rarely leaves Graceland Too, sleeps only sporadically and is fueled by 24 cans of Coca-Cola a day - a claim at least partially verified by the aluminum pull-top tabs he collects in sandwich bags and the stacks of flattened red cardboard boxes on the back porch.
Graceland Too is in Holly Springs, a northern Mississippi town of 8,000. It's a convenient stop for fans on an Elvis pilgrimage, sitting about halfway between Elvis Presley's birthplace in Tupelo, Miss., and the King's final home and resting place, the unaffiliated Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tenn.
An Antarctic expedition has found what it believes to be remains of the first aeroplane brought to the frozen continent, on an icy shore near where it was abandoned almost a century ago.
Australia has searched for many years for the old single-propeller Vickers plane at Cape Denison, where the nation's most famous polar explorer, Douglas Mawson, abandoned it after it proved to be a failure during his 1911-14 expedition.
A member of the expedition, which is dedicated to restoring Mawson's original wooden huts at Cape Denison, stumbled on pieces of rusted metal tubing among ice-encrusted rocks on the shore of Commonwealth Bay at an especially low tide. They match structural iron tubing from the single-winged plane's fuselage.
Mawson's dream of staging the first human flight over the Antarctic ice cap, less than a decade after the Wright brothers made the first powered flight, was shattered even before his expedition sailed for the Antarctic from Australia in late 1911.

Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi has returned to an old passion of his while recovering from last month's attack at a rally: writing Neapolitan love songs, news reports said.
Berlusconi also made his first public appearance since the Dec. 13 attack, going to a shopping mall close to his villa in Milan, Corriere della Sera and other Italian newspapers said Friday. The reports said the premier spent about two hours in the mall on Thursday afternoon before going back to his villa to host a New Year's Eve dinner party.
La Stampa and other newspapers said Thursday that Berlusconi is working on a new CD of love songs with Neapolitan composer Mariano Apicella. La Stampa said that so far eight songs have been composed. The pair have worked together in the past, with Berlusconi composing the lyrics of songs in previous CDs of Neapolitan ballads.
Berlusconi often has said he likes to stay up at night to compose Neapolitan love songs. As a young man - before he became a media mogul and, later, a politician - Berlusconi used to sing on a cruise ship.
Thieves have stolen about 30 paintings, including a work by Spanish master Pablo Picasso, from a private villa in the south of France, police said on Saturday.
The haul, which also included a painting by post-impressionist Henri Rousseau, was worth about 1 million euros ($1.43 million), a judicial source said.
The theft was discovered on Thursday by a caretaker at the house in the Provencal village of La Cadiere d'Azur. The owner was on holiday in Sweden at the time and has since returned to France to help the investigation, police said.
It was the second major art theft in southern France in recent days, although there was no indication the two crimes were linked.
Iraqis seeking justice for 17 people shot dead at a Baghdad intersection responded with bitterness and outrage Friday at a U.S. judge's decision to throw out a case against a Blackwater security team of mercenaries accused in the killings.
The Iraqi government vowed to pursue the case, which became a source of contention between the U.S. and the Iraqi government. Many Iraqis also held up the judge's decision as proof of what they'd long believed: U.S. security contractors mercenaries were above the law.
What happened on Nisoor Square on Sept. 16, 2007, raised Iraqi concerns about their sovereignty because Iraqi officials were powerless to do anything to the Blackwater employees who had immunity from local prosecution. The shootings also highlighted the degree to which the U.S. relied on private contractors during the Iraq conflict.
Blackwater had been hired by the State Department to protect U.S. diplomats in Iraq. The guards said they were ambushed at a busy intersection in western Baghdad, but U.S. prosecutors and many Iraqis said the Blackwater guards let loose an unprovoked attack on civilians using machine guns and grenades.

Six years ago, NASA's Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity touched down on the red planet with a team of scientists eagerly looking ahead to their short, three-month missions.
As they embark on their seventh year on Mars, the longevity of the plucky rovers continues to amaze their minders back on Earth, even with Spirit potentially permanently stuck wheel-deep in Martian sand.
Spirit set down at Gusev Crater on Jan. 3, 2004, at 11:35 p.m. EST, with its younger sister rover Opportunity landing on the other side of the planet - on the plains of Meridiani Planum - more than two weeks later at midnight EST on Jan. 25. While Sunday marks the mission's sixth anniversary on Earth, it has only been 3.2 Martian years since one year on Mars is about 687 Earth days long.
Originally slated to trundle across the Martian surface for only 90 days each, Spirit and Opportunity blew past those deadlines and have continued their missions for far longer than mission engineers ever thought possible. Opportunity even passed the 11-mile mark on its odometer earlier this year and beamed home more than 132,000 images of Mars.
